DBB Weekend Show – Week 8 [AUDIO]

| October 28th, 2016

On the Weekend Show:

  • We lead off with Adam Jahns discussing the drama surrounding Jay Cutler’s return to the starting lineup and his general dismay with John Fox’s communication.
  • Dolly Parton! In the Ghetto!
  • Jeff discusses the three possible outcomes over the next 9 games for Cutler and why his starting in 2017 should not be ruled out yet.
  • Reverend Dave compares the Cutler debate to…Scientology?
  • The pick: Bears 13, Vikings 10. Expect Bears defense to control things but if Bears go into this game without their starting guards, Cutler won’t have a calm pocket all night.

    first. Or something.

A 13-10 Bears means Cutler isn’t throwing any picks or getting strip sacked. That seems like a fairly bold prediction.

    • MB30SD

      agreed counselor.

      Dooooon’t caaaaare!

  • MB30SD

So what are you guys going to Halloween as?

    I’m this: http://carboncostume.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/jackburton.jpg

    Jack Burton…. ME!

      • MB30SD

        Ohhhhh, myyyyyyyu

    • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

Olivia Munn is dressing up a secret lesbian. Shhhhhhhhhhhh.

      http://www.thelostogle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/olivia-munn-costume-6.jpg

      • CanadaBear

I was watching Ride Along 2 while I was working out. Turrible movie but Olivia Munn is in it and she’s playing a lesbian. Didn’t seem like a lot of acting was going on! Just sayin’!

        • Sauron’s right eyeball

Canada…….If you’re watching TV while you’re working out, you’re not working out. Get down and give me 50. Hee hee.

          • CanadaBear

I assure you I’m working out. Low weights, lots of reps. Mindless TV isn’t really all that distracting unless you’re going the big weights/few reps route. Don’t want to lose your concentration with the big stuff! Trust me on this one, Ride Along 2 is not very distracting. it is beyond turrible. Kevin Hart reminds me of Michael Caine back in the 70’s-80’s. Never turned down even one movie, just made them all no matter how shitty.

          • MB30SD

He is the fucking worst, most unfunny guy ever.

If you even wanted a sign the apocalypse is nigh look no further than the fact that Kevin hart was the highest paid comedian in the WORLD last year. Smfh

          • CanadaBear

I kinda liked him at first but he’s way over exposed these days.

          • CanadaBear

I’ve been meaning to ask you, are you in the market for a spare set of wheels? I bought a pair of Ultegra wheels from these guys for $285. They are tubeless compatible. Really happy with mine. The spacing is 130 mm so they will work with 8-11 speed and they will send you the proper spacer if required.

The price on the link is in Canadian dollars in USD it’s $285.

          • MB30SD

I haven’t ridden in like 9 months canada fir fuck sake. Work’s been nuts, and now we’re heading into ‘winter’.

Besides that, i want aeros. 808s

          • Huge Bears Penis
          • CanadaBear

Of course you do! If I ever see a pair of 808’s at a great price I’ll pass it along. Stop working so hard my friend and smell the roses once in a while. Pretty sure winter is a relative term depending on where you live! It’s been raining like crazy here for the last 3 weeks. The winter storms came early this year (fuckers).

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

He smells the roses Canada. Oh does he!

          • CanadaBear

            Good point, Trac!

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            Lol

    • Bender McLugh

did you hear they are going to REMAKE that classic? Turrible! can’t remake that man, Big Trouble is one of a kind dammit all!

      • MB30SD

100% agree. And with the rock. I loves me some rock, but seriously?!?!

      • Sactowns#1

I want to see a remake but in the original setting, the wild west. The movie was originally written to take place in gold rush era SF. I think that would be a great movie!

        • MB30SD

          Heeeeell no! Totally different movie!!

      • Irish Sweetness

As long as they keep their hands off The Last Dragon.

    • Sactowns#1

Ha! Have you been creeping on my FB again? I did Jack Burton about 5 years ago. Lots of guys got who I was but not a single chick understood it without explanation.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

My old roomate went as Jack Burton, but he was like super skinny, so not sure he pulled it of.

He did pick up on a thick chinese girl though – (bbq) Porkchop express baby!

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I’m going as the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith version) from Doctor Who, in celebration of finally getting my Ph.D. and earning the title of Doctor this year.

      • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

That is so nerdy. Wow. Well done.

        • willbest

Would you expect anything less from a PhD student turned doctor?

        • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

          I am an unabashed nerd.

No, that’s not even right. I am a huge nerd, and proud of it.

I own a periodic table bow tie that I wear to work occasionally. Because if you can’t be a nerd as a chemistry professor, when can you?

      • willbest

        Bowties are cool.

        • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

The other chemistry professor I work with (small department) and I have started doing “Bow Tie Mondays,” where we both wear a bow tie every Monday. This Monday, we’re both wearing costumes, and mine will have a bow tie anyway. It’s only fitting.

He’s breaking the bow tie trend for a week, but I can’t complain. He’s going as professor Snape from Harry Potter, just so he can tell students “Welcome to Potions”

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

      I was thinking about Wolverine.

I sorta did a zombie thing last week at this shindig in DTLA, but I think I’m going to go as Kylo Ren this year.

  • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

    (Wolfman Jack voice)

“this one goes out to the Johnny Waffle. You may be the blog Cutler apologist, but you know you belong here with the rest of us degenerates. so take it slow, pour some tradewind, tell the wife no more babies, and we will see you on the B side of life….”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g41q_OqwKHk

    • CanadaBear

Pretty sure Johnny will come back. Not sure why he takes Cutler bashing so personal. I think most of us don’t hate Cutler but after 8 largely unsuccessful years, it’s time to move on.

      • MB30SD

        Bing…oho!

      • willbest

        Did he “quit” the blog?

        • CanadaBear

Yeah, in the last thread. He’s done it before (a lot of us have over the years) and came back. Hopefully this will be the same. The place isn’t the same without Johnny!

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

            Dunno.

Can Waffle root for the Bears without Cutler?

Also, unlike in years past, most of the regs are anti-Cutler now.

You, me, MB, Berwyn, SC, pretty sure GP, Sac, Trac and a few others (Shady, NB,?)

Only 3 that still believe in Cutty are Waffle, Will (talk about an unholy alliance lol) and that other dude.

          • CanadaBear

Fair enough. Most of us never even say much these days. The writing is on the wall.

        • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

          he does this.

then he changes his tampon and comes back.

          • MB30SD

Hahaha… i miss him amd his bleedy vagina.

Hilarious dude in person. GP you shady Murph and yonny should go see a game together

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)
      • Sactowns#1

It’s like a bad marriage, a lot of people keep telling themselves “this time it will be different. This time things have changed!”

      • willbest

If something isn’t working and you just change something to make a change in order to hope things get better, that is just stupid. I think that is what he has a problem with.

To me Cutler seems more of a barometer for the Bears. 2009-2014 his play basically reflected the play of the Bears. 2015 was actually an odd year because while he was personally good the team still sucked.

Incidentally, so is Joe Flacco and Eli. Except they have both had that moment where they elevated themselves above that for 3-4 games at the right time. Which is what we have been waiting for.

        • Irish Sweetness

I don’t see any controversy though. Hoyer blows. At least now Cam and AJ get balls flying their way downfield … and Howard can take the pressure off Cutty … just not against Minny, where he probably won’t get 50 yards.

Cutty could just take this team to a draft position where the chance to draft a top QB has disappeared.

          • willbest

Cam doesn’t need Cutler to succeed, AJ does because even the fake of the double team is enough to push Hoyer in a different direction.

And Hoyer blows, but he can move the ball between the 20s. The problem is neither him nor Birdcage can handle things when the field gets short.

          • Irish Sweetness

He needs an accurate QB, or at least a QB who’ll take a shot downfield. I can’t wait to see Cutty – that’s a tough D though.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

Hoyer was more accurate than Cutler.

            #fact

The curse/blessing with Hoyer is one in the same. He’ll run the play Birdcage calls. He won’t amble under center and yell to the OC “go fuck yourself”.

That last play where he “missed” Alshon is the perfect example.

The play was DESIGNED to go away from Alshon cuz Birdcage assumed in that critical moment, the Colts would not only put their best CB on Alshon, but a S over the top.

It’s understanding they would assume that.

So, the play was to go right, away from Alshon, path of least resistance.

            Birdcage guessed wrong.

The Colts put their best CB on him, but shaded everyone else towards the middle.

            It worked.

Hoyer looked first read, 2nd read (likely Miller), throw (that’s who he is). Alshon was like the 3rd read in that play.

Hoyer for the most part won’t go rogue (maybe he didn’t even have the option to audible yet), and he’ll shy away from double coverage because he doesn’t have the arm Cutler does.

But Cutler going rouge or slinging it into double coverage is also a blessing/curse.

            So pick your poison.

          • willbest

            Not over 20 yards. #fact

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

You Cutlerites can have the 20 yds, sacks, strip sacks, ints, 3 and outs, less TOP.

            I’ll take the competitive games.

          • willbest

I want wins. Well not after Destroyer.

          • Huge Bears Penis

that’s pushing it. 10 maybe 12 yards at most.

          • Irish Sweetness

If we could play Hoyer into their half and then bring in Cutty ….

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

Lol Cam became a star under Hoyer!

Miller (White), and Royal were no longer invisible. So much so, that the critique became Hoyer spreads the ball TOO much and should target Alshon more!

I never hear that critique about Brady – hey, stop spreading the ball around!

          • willbest

Cutler turned Miller into a stud last year. So um.. yeah. And he through to Royal too when he wasn’t hurt.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

            I’m talking about THIS year.

          • willbest

Look I get that he fucked your sister or something, but there is plenty to hate on Cutler without making shit up. Cutler did not zero in on Jeffery. Jeffery did however catch the 54 yarder and 49 yarder when Cutler threw it at him.

            v Houston
            Royal 4 on 6 targets
            Jeffery 4 on 6 targets
            White 3 on 7 targets
            Miller 3 on 4 targets
            Langford 2 on 4 targets
            Paulsen 0 on 1 target

            v Eagles
            Royal 2 on 4 targets
            Jeffery 3 on 4 targets
            White 2 on 3 targets
            Miller 2 on 3 targets
            Langford 1 on 2 targets
            Carey 1 on 1 target

          • BerwynBomber

“Look I get that he fucked your sister or something”

Hah! You get so sensitive about Cutty analysis. SMH.

          • willbest

Butch makes it sounds like Cutler does 1 of 3 things when he drops back to pass. throws it to the DB, hands it off to the DL, or throws it to Jeffery. If he would dial the hyperbole down to an 8, it wouldn’t be so triggering.

          • CanadaBear

Most people thought he might want to look for Alshon in the red zone. Just a thought. Also, so now the bar is Tom Brady?

          • willbest

Tom Brady completed 0 passes the first for games of this season. #fact

        • BerwynBomber

Flacco and Eli also made the post-season like four or five times more than Cutler. Big difference.

      • Irish Sweetness

        He might be Jay Cutler!

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

Pretty sure Waffle is more passionate about Jay Cutler than Jay Cutler is passionate about Jay Cutler.

Waffle should just do like me and he’d be a lot happier around here. Around the same time I banned all Chicago sports media in December 2014 I also quit reading all Cutler related posts on the blog, like the next 20 or so comments.

I know the MLB schedules the World Series around football (only 1 of the 7 games is on a football day). However, I wonder if the reason the Bears play this particular Monday night had anything to do with the fact that the Cubs were in the NLCS last year.

NFL is king, they don’t schedule around anybody or anything.

    Interesting…

“Why the Cubs—and why Belize? Like a lot of stories from this part of the
world, it began with pirates. In this case, however, the outlaws were
local TV impresarios, not swashbuckling Johnny Depp look-alikes. In the
early ‘80s, there were no television stations in Belize, the only
country in Central America whose official language is English. (Anyone
with a set would use it to watch VHS tapes.) In 1981, however, Belize
City business couple Arthur and Marie Hoare began transmitting the
famous Chicago television channel WGN-TV via satellite, bringing
programming to Belize. Channel 9, the Hoares’ bootlegged Belize
affiliate of WGN, brought Cubs and Bulls games into living rooms and
bars throughout the country, sparking an interest in Chicago sports that
has continued—with varying levels of enthusiasm—to this day.”

Minnesota is the best run defense in the sport. Bears will run it to keep them honest. Success a long shot. – Jeff

One thing that the Bears should try to do is a lot of swing passes to the HB.

Some team did it to the stout Bronco D, and it worked to nullify their aggressiveness.

The Pats are also known to do this vs tough Ds (that’s why they always keep guys like Vereen, James White around).

If Royal is healthy, he can also play the Edleman role in getting those quick slants and crosses.

This can effectively act as a run game if executed properly (Granted with Cutler and not Brady, that’s a big IF).

Draws and screens and maybe even a lil read option/reverse thrown in can also slow down their pass rush a bit.

In other words, Birdcage will have to get creative for once.

    • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

      Dumb. Dumb dumb dumb.

The Vikes weakness is the deep ball. Long bombs to Jeffery and Meredith, lots of deep routes. Keep the back in to be an extra blocker, and keep going long on them. Their linebackers will eat Miller, and if you put the ball in front of their safeties, they will tag Royal and Meredith and they will cough it up. Swing back has no shot against those linebackers and nickel.

      • willbest

Except we have Larsen and Kush in at guard and Massie sucks balls so the pocket should collapse in pretty short order. Also, Rhodes has achieved special CB status where he is allowed to disrupt the WR 10 yards off the LOS instead of the usual 5 yards.

        • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

Jay is good at getting 50 yards in the air while backpedaling for his life…

          #CannonArm

          • willbest

I did like the 50 yard pass to Jeffery against the Eagles that was really a 70 yarder because he took a 20 yard drop back.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

We can still take shots, but no way will our beat up Oline hold up against their pass rush.

        No way.

Cutty needs to get rid of the ball fast, develop a rhythm.

Then take his shots when the Vikes adapt to the underneath stuff.

Pats do this all the time vs good Ds, and it works.

The Vikings are going to play 2 deep all night. Asking that Oline to protect culter for 5-7 steps then trusting Cutler to squeeze it into coverage (Vikes also have good outside corners) is a recipe for disaster.

        • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

Vikes have SHORT outside corners. Jeffery has burned them in years past and he can do it again.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

Xavier Rhodes is 6’1 220, and he’s good, and will likely have Harrison Smith 6’2 215 backing him up vs Alshon most of the night.

I say attack their LBs and nickle, soften them up a bit.

      • Irish Sweetness

Yet they only allow 5.7 yards per pass, third in the league. No weak links there.

Cutty to Cam and Howard could be the amazing new-look offense that beats these bitches.

      • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

it would show Howard´s blocking skills value.

    • willbest

Indications seem to be that Bellamy is going to be our slot guy this week.

    • SC Dave

Passes to the HB… oh wait…

Better be Howard, as he has not yet shown he can’t catch them.

    • SC Dave

Fuck that. Our second and third string OL comes in, pancakes them bitches all night, and we are the first NFL team ever with three 100 yard backs in one game.

Yeah, okay, so I’ve had a couple of beers. Wanna make something of it?

      • Huge Bears Penis

        HELL YEAH!!!! keep drinking!

uggghhh, that shit is vicious. As in hangover

          • EnderWiggin

Yeah man. When your young, that shit taste soooo good. Until you drink too much, then you can never drink it again.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd JumpingDaShark (ButchDeadlift)

Yeah, me and a buddy were rushing somewhere and stopped in at this cheapy liquor store that didn’t have many options, so we got some Comfort.

Hadn’t tasted it in a long time, and I couldn’t stand how sweet it was.

I used to think it went down smooth, but now it just tastes like syrup to my older self.

          • CanadaBear

Back in the day that stuff was 100 proof. Really deadly in more ways than one!

          • SC Dave

            It tastes nasty too.

          • Irish Sweetness

That and Pernod. As in putrid taste.

          • MB30SD

            Licorice is disgusting

        • SC Dave

          Consider it done!

    • Irish Sweetness

They’re actually the third best in run-defense based on YPP allowed (behind the Packers and Jets). It’s still under 4 YPC. They’re also #3 in YPP allowed in the passing game. No way around it, they’re a top top defense … but I still think Cutty could outscore their offense. We’re holding rushers to less than 4 YPC, and surely we can harass their OL. It’s about what their D scores.

      • CanadaBear

After Zimmer came out last week and said the OL played soft, I’m guessing they will come out on fire.

  • Goin to Hell with Pernell (GP)

So.. imma let you finish… but this is the weirdest of all time… all TIME…..

Weiner’s laptop that he used to send dick (weiner) pics to teenage girls was the computer they found that Huma had stashed the deleted emails on? That’s a joke, right? If you ran that storyline on Better Call Saul people would complain that it was too stupid and unrealistic..

I love the quote from Fox where he denies saying he was done with Cutler. Well, that’s that. You know Fox can tell it a dozen different ways and still not be lying (at least in his own mind). He’s been so bad about this stuff that even the media seems to be openly mocking him about his “truthiness”. Not that I care about the media but I wouldn’t believe Fox if he said hello.

    J. Stewart against Arizona or Diggs against us for my flex.

    • AlbertInTucson

When in doubt, I go with the guy playing the Bears.

      • AlbertInTucson

The Bears put Diggs on the map last season.

        • willbest

they had tackles last year though.

    • AlbertInTucson

At QB I went with Ryan vs GB over Newton vs AZ.

      • willbest

I went with Ryan too, but my backup is Big Ben who is ridding pine.

    • AlbertInTucson

Panthers havent had much of a running attack. Stewart is kind of brittle.

      • willbest

Yeah I think I am going to stick with Diggs and hope for the best. My other options are horrible or on bye.

    • AlbertInTucson

Turns out, I didnt miss much.

  • MB30SD

so, can someone explain to me the following phenomenon…

You go to a redskins v. bengals game, and you wear a fucking rams jersey.

    WTF is that?!

    • AlbertInTucson

      Very British.

    • madscout12

London. And it happens here too.

Went to last year’s bucs/bears and counted about 15 teams year not of the participants.

    • willbest

What should a British football fan do?
      1) If you are a Ram’s fan you want to show the team they should come over to England
      2) You aren’t going to buy a new jersey for every team that comes through at $180 a pop or whatever they are up to now. So if you want to wear a jersey to the game to express your general football enthusiasm its going to be what you have.

      • MB30SD

not talking about this game. I’ve been to 3 games at Soldier over the last few years, and I’ve seen TONS of jerseys from teams who weren’t playing.

Seems totally fucking stupid to me, but wtf do I know.

  • willbest

Well shit Stewart already has a td

    • AlbertInTucson

      Two.

  • madscout12

I was reading this morning about ratings being down. I was thinking a big reason is that unless you are a fan of a team with a star QB, you have no expectation that the game will be even. And there are only a few of those guys, and one of the wipes 3 teams.

For example, bills, jets, and phins fans know borderline calls go the Pats way. So do ravens, bengals, and browns. So do bears, lions, and Vikings fans.

So for hyping one team by “protecting” certain players, the NFL alienates 3.

Nah. We aren’t there yet. We’ve seen competence in the face of a while starting lineup being injured. Go back and watch the game against the Saints that 2nd freshman year. We aren’t there yet.

          • willbest

At this point in Cryptkeepers second year we were 3-4 heading into what what was about to stand out as the crappiest Bears play I have ever personally watched in New England, and Houston giving the allegory for the season in tearing his ACL doing a sack dance against a backup QB playing because we were down 4 scores. Only to head into the bye and then double down on our shitty performance against the Packers.

Does EVERY SINGLE PLAY require a penalty flag? – Jeff

Haha, when I tuned in to watch a Cubbies game in forever, I was expecting a ref to run into the screen and throw a yellow flag after each pitch.

  • willbest

I think Jeff is exaggerating on where Carr would have gone without his brother’s legacy. If he were a true #1 it wouldn’t have mattered. To the extent his brother affected his ability, it almost certainly helped him. You make more money over a 5 year period if you are:
    1) A top 20 talent at your position
    2) Drafted in the top half of the second, instead of 11-32.

This is because you can’t be 5th year option. Case in point, the 5th year option for a QB in 2017 drafted 11th-32nd in 2013 is 11.4 million (its nearly 18 mil if you are drafted in the top 10). The franchise tag on QBs next year will be over $20 million.

Carr drafted at 36th gets 5.4 million, if he were drafted 11th instead he would have made

  • willbest
  • AlbertInTucson

Going for 2 to tie in the first half?

    Stupid.

Like, there’s not going to be anymore scoring in the 2nd half of a game like this?

  • AlbertInTucson

And if you’d just kicked the point to get to 20 when you scored near the end of the first half instead of going for 2, you’d be up by 3 now, instead of just 2.

    Morons.

  • willbest

wow. I hate the Packers. But I have to tip my cap to them for using a Pole back there at RB.

  • willbest

Wow that is some serious Packers love. They review the play and call 12 men, and not give the coach his timeout, which should also be available since Fox showed it before the snap.

    • madscout12

Love that 12 men is reviewable on a challenge of anything else. But not offensive holding.

Going to be a log jam at the top next week.

The 5-2 team is getting hammered so there will be three 5-3 teams at the top.

It’s a log jam in Da League too.

Could have 6 teams at 4-4 next week, only points being tie breaker for 2nd.

Except for me of course. I’ll be 7-1 and 150+ points, unless Cutler, Asiata, Alshon and Carey can score 35 points each.

Crushing Waffle like Hoyer crushed Cutler’s Bears’ career.

I do wonder about Langford’s workload.

They might ease him in, esp since the bye is next week.

But if Langford starts ripping off runs vs that D, they might “run the hot hand”

They’ve shown in the past that they’re not particularly fond of either Carey or Howard.

I also think Langford will at least be the 3rd down back.
