Just curious if anyone has seen the movie Bob Dylan wrote and starred in called Masked and Anonymous. Is it any good? I know it has an all-star cast and have meant to watch it a few times but never got around to it.

When in doubt I go to Roger Ebert. I agree with most of his reviews (much more than any other movie critic). Roger was not pleased. Everything I’ve read, unless you’re a Dylan fanatic, uh-oh. Although, I’m sure parts of it would be fascinating on different levels.

    • CanadaBear

A lot of truth in that piece and a lot BS too. As the writer slobbers all over Hoyer he fails to mention they rarely score TD’s and have lost every game but one. Either way, this will be Cutler’s last year in Chicago.

      • BerwynBomber

I’m not so sure, but I would be shocked (and basically give up on current management) if his back-up next year is not a rookie from the first two or three rounds, and/or Cutty is not moved into a bridge/mentor role.

        • CanadaBear

Pace likes to horde the cash, that’s the main reason why I think Cutler is gone after this season. Unless Hoyer shits the bed down the stretch, I could see them bringing him back for not much $ and pick a QB in the first. Use the extra cash somewhere or save it for later. Hope they do. That will put everyone on the clock in Bears mgmt.

    • “In his four place starts for Cutler, all Hoyer’s done is set a franchise
record for the most consecutive 300-yard games, becoming the first
Bears quarterback to reach the mark four times in a row. Cutler, on the
other hand, has only had back-to-back 300-yard games in Chicago twice in
eight years. Hoyer did it in his first four starts”

Hoyer has also has not thrown an INT in 189 attempts, is 3rd in completion % (68.8) , gets sacked at a lesser rate (not cuz of Birdcage, but because he gets rid of the ball more quickly) and at least $10M cheaper.

However, I think I heard somewhere else that he has the worst completion % at throwing more than 15yds, and the book on him has always been if he gets pressured, he becomes really erratic .

I don’t think I agree with the article’s assertion though that if Cutler returns for 8 games and kills it, that he will be gone.

If Cutler comes back and posts Hoyer-ish #s WITH TDs and some of those 3rd down scrambles, then we’d have to keep him (or trade, not just cut him).

Naturally, those usually come with sacks, strip sacks, and soul crushing INTs.

But in the off chance he does somehow cut those down, then I think we must keep Cutler.

The wildcard is leadership. From everything I read, Hoyer has it, and Cutler is just there.

But no one outside that locker room really knows how that flies.

If we do cut Cutty, then Hoyer is the bridge, Shaw the “developmental” QB, and if the draft offers us a franchise, then we strike, but if it’s a bad batch at QBs, then we might have to wait.

      • willbest

If we keep Cutler in ’17 it will be fore the same reason we kept him in ’15. We looked around, considered the available options and determined him to be the best one. The only difference with ’15 vs. ’17 is that moving on from him no longer involves getting fleeced by the Titans for their #2 draft pick.

      Pathetic rationalization, Coach..

Also pathetic is the fact that Marvin Lewis has won, what, ONE playoff game in 10 years there and is still HC?

  • maybe next year we can give the Nobel to Tupac.
    And after that, Johnny Cash

20 years down the line, Mariah Carey…

    • willbest

The literature category is sort of a catchall for non-science stuff written down. A song writer seems perfectly valid considering its been given to philosophers, playwrights, satirists, essayists, historians.

    • CanadaBear

Please. Dylan is without a doubt the poet laureate of a generation or two, just not yours. If you don’t like him, I get it. I never want to hear him sing ever again but when other people do his songs they can be magical. Mariah Carey? Really?

      • I know a lot of ppl who swear Tupac is a great poet.

And can one argue that Cash’s lyrics or a few others, are not up to par? Cohen? Nick Cave? Or how about all those Blues singers?

See what I mean? To me, it’s a slippery slope.

Are they awarding Dylan the prize for this year, or for his whole career?

And how bad does contemporary literature have to suck for a songwriter to win it?

I don’t really get it. I like Dylan, but he shouldn’t win the prize IMO.

        • CanadaBear

There’s the rub. I don’t care even remotely that a songwriter won the prize. Just to give you an idea how much I value lyrics here’s my all-time favorite artist (and it’s not even close) doing his most famous song. Have fun with those lyrics.

    • BerwynBomber

I was thinking Beyoncé next year. Maybe the Beebs after that.

P.S. Dylan, of course, is a seminal figure as a lyricist in pop culture, but honestly, such people are lauded enough, not to mention well-paid. The Nobel for Literature for a pop lyricist seems entirely silly, but then again, who the F cares?

      • I think the Nobel is still one of the FEW awards that actually matter.

In this day and age of reality TV, MTV awards, Teen awards, Miss Universe, the Nobel actually has a decent history of awarding true genius, innovation, talent, courage, the shit that’s supposed to be the best in us.

        Einstein, Camus…Dylan?

Also, don’t “rock stars” get enough accolades, pussy and money?

It’s like giving Tom Brady “Mime of theYear” when some other poor schmuck has been toiling in mime-dom for 50 years.

        • willbest

Well in this case its Steinbeck, Churchill, Yeats, Eliot, and Dylan. (Just to be English centric, I presume the others winning are indeed in the same class as Steinbeck).

        • BerwynBomber

“Also, don’t “rock stars” get enough accolades, pussy and money?”

Yeah, that was kind of my implied point: it is kind of a slap in the face to traditional writers as I’m sure, even the successful ones, have never achieved the fame, riches, bennies and accolades that Dylan has.

In terms of the Nobel mattering, I don’t know … I suppose. It seems like the award works best when it is given to someone laboring in semi-obscurity.

          • I don’t get it really.

I think in another 50 years, Dylan will be a footnote. That’s just the way it goes with musicians not named Mozart, Beethoven, etc, even the great ones

Let’s say in the 50s the award was given to Sinatra instead of say, Phillip Larkin, or in the 60s Jim Morrison instead of Philip K Dick.

I mean, I know they don’t always get it right, but at least the committee should TRY!

(And for the record, I love the Doors, and kinda like Sinatra).

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

            What about Elvis? Hmm..hmm?

          • Huge Bears Penis

Elvis was never considered a song writer. He was credited as a co-writer on a couple songs. He was just a singing puppet.

          • AlbertInTucson

Some people can write. Some can sing.

My problem is with people who CAN write and who THINK they can sing.

          • willbest

How many of these are going to merit more than a footnote come 2100?

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nobel_laureates_in_Literature

I mean think about what we learn of 1800s American literature. Outside Hawthorne, Emerson, Thoreau, Twain, maybe you read Stowe, some Poe. Its fading fast.

          • Melville, and the prize isn’t restricted to Americans or just English speaking.

Proust, Flaubert, Hugo, Stendahl, Baudalaire, Dumas

            Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Chekhov,

            Goethe….DYLAN

I refuse to believe that the committee surveyed the WHOLE PLANET and found NO writer worthy of the Nobel Prize for Lit.

          • willbest

I know its the whole planet, but its hard to truly appreciate translations, which is why I limited my stuff to things that I have read in their original form.

But I think the hard part is no matter who they pick, there is an argument to be made for another. And I do understand the point about bringing recognition to places where the creative talent otherwise gets overlooked by the masses. But if we were to view the Nobel prize as sort of a Hall of Fame, wouldn’t the inclusion of Dylan be similar to the inclusion of Jan Stenerud. That is to say a representation of that expression of literature vs. other forms.

      • Johnnywad

I always enjoyed the Newberry Award books as a kid. Don’t know why, but I always felt like I was getting the good shit when I read them. That’s about the only “award” that’s ever meant anything to me.

if Josh Brown is diagnosed as mentally unstable and not just an asshole, Jeff might change his tune.

          • Josh Brown did admit that he was molested at 7, and since then has objectified and mistreated women.

            Don’t know if that counts.

          • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I’m admittedly not big on the insanity defense when it comes to beating kids and women, though I do get the point about learned behaviors being passed down from generation to generation.

          • It’s a fine line.

We have a lot of data now about serial killers, and most of them had the shit beat out of them, or were molested, or were in some weird incestual environment.

And I would guess that most of the molested, in turn, molest down the line.

It’s rare they come from “normal” homes, so there’s def causation, but only up to a point.

            It’s tough, that’s for sure.

          • Sactowns#1

But where did they all go? There’s a theory that society is too interconnected now and serial killers cant as easily get away with these things. So now they are turning o mass shootings and the such.

    Our positives:

    1) Our #1 and 2 WR are healthy facing the #4 and 5 CBs
    2) The Packers shouldn’t have much of a run game, and are missing their #3 WR and their #1 WR isn’t what he used to be.
    3) Rodgers has some mental issues or the hits have finally started to take their toll physically

    Our negatives
    1) We don’t have a deep ball
    2) We are missing our slot receiver
    3) Our pro-bowl LG is out which could affect our run game
    4) We don’t have a secondary

I think our LBs are going to have to do something special for us to win. A FF, an INT. This game is going to have to be won on turnovers. Probably +2.

    • Big Mike

We’re 1-5. There are no positives. TEAM is terrible.

      • BearDown100393

We’re also winning the last 10.

    • The huge negative on D is no pass rush.

But I found it interesting that teams around the league have actually copied Fangio’s blueprint with Rogers.

They no longer blitz him, because this opens up the big play he loves hitting.

Instead, the book on Vadgers now is to rush 4 or even 3, put a spy and cover.

Eventually he’ll get antsy looking for that deep ball and self-destruct.

We did the same to Stafford, and it worked.

Granted, this requires actual starting caliber CBs, but that’s been the blueprint thus far vs Vadgers.

      • AlbertInTucson

Have to worry about the “Cover” part of that formula.

    • BerwynBomber

“Mental issues”? Not sure about that, unless you’re talking the Olivia Munn distraction.

Could be more mechanics and Rodgers relying too much on his ability to extend plays. The latter, I assume, can make a pro QB indecisive and greedy, if he’s not careful.

      Agree otherwise with your take(s).

THere was an excellent WIRED article on Fan Duel and the algos they developed to hook and keep players

      • It’s def predatory, then again, if a person is a gambler, he’ll find a way to flush his $. Used to be boxing, horses, then slots and Texas no limit, now FF I guess.

Also, is it me, or are most degenerate gamblers MALE?

There’s gotta be data on that somewhere.

        • willbest

Each sex has its own addictions. Something like 1 in 5 women are on anti-depressants or other form of mood stabilizer. More if you include hormone birth control.

        • CanadaBear

Not in casinos. They make up the majority of slot players.

Seriously though, Fox need to get his shit together. Blackhawks da best squad in da Chi. Cubs been killin shit, Sox aight, Bulls always making da playoffs. • SC Dave

        Um, no.

        • Huge Bears Penis

          how bout zombie Halas?

    • AlbertInTucson

Hawks got off to a wretched start. Not crazy about a 4-0 lead a home in the second period becoming a 7-4 win.

They have surrendered 15 goals in 4 games.

      • willbest

This feels like a year they are going to need to train up their young pups

        • AlbertInTucson

Did I see Brian Campbell is back on their blue line corps?

          • willbest

Don’t know, I have only seen 1 game with my blackhawks obsessed neighbor. He was just going over all the moves that were made, bringing people over from Rockford etc and I said “this doesn’t sound like a championship year” and he said “yeah… I don’t expect them to go very far this year”

          • AlbertInTucson

Lots of new moving parts but at least we KNOW Joel Quenneville CAN coach.

  • BerwynBomber

ESPN FF guy’s WR pick of the week? Cameron Meredith.

    • Could be, esp with Royal out.

In the initial scouting report I wrote on Hoyer I predicted Alshon is going to be targeted much less than under Cutler, and so far that has held true.

It’s not exactly a bad thing either. I guess if you own Alshon in FF, but not in real life football.

  • BerwynBomber

Since W5 2015 (and not counting post-season games), Aaron Rodgers is:

    35th in completion percentage
    35th in yards per attempt
    20th in QBR

    • BearDown100393

And still has national endorsement contracts.

      • willbest

He also isn’t in danger of losing his starting job. Just for the FYI

2017: 13.6 million salary (6.5 mil dead money)
        2018: 20.9 million salary
        2019: 21.1 million salary

        • BerwynBomber

Yet Rodgers’ overall contract was smaller than Cutler’s. And the guaranteed money was the exact same.

          Thanks, Phil Emery!!!

          • willbest

Rodgers averaged something like 22 million a year vs. Jay’s 18 million. Plus nobody is going to pay Jay his 21 million year but they might Rodgers so Jay’s deal was closer to 16.5 million a year if you lop off the last 2 years.

          • BerwynBomber

54 guaranteed is 54 guaranteed. And Rodger’s annual average salary for his five year deal was 17M. GB could cut him after 2017 and not owe him a dime.

Nanny is on the active roster… Lord knows how he will look with 3 practices two of which were walk-throughs.

    • When asked earlier in the week if he’s going to play, McPhee responded, “You’ll see”

      Even his response was angry.

He’s like a Darth Sith. He channels his anger to force heal.

Or maybe he’s gonna dress up, do some laps, then yell at Cutler, and call it a day.

      • Sactowns#1

Cutler heard he’s coming back and then asked to stay home for this game. lol

  • beninnorcal

    What time is kickoff?

    • CanadaBear

      Looks like 7:25 CDT.

      • AlbertInTucson

What’s the best way to get blood out of carpet in the trunk of your car?

          • CanadaBear

I think you might need Winston Wolf for this!

          • AlbertInTucson

            OR Harvey Keitel?

          • 505Bears

You sending the Wolf? Shiiiit n***o, that’s all you had to say!

          • BearDown100393

            Can he coach football?

          • Huge Bears Penis

            maybe, kick a FG?

          • SC Dave

            Maybe Hillary can help?

          • AlbertInTucson

That would cost you a large Clinton Foundation Donation.

I love me Robbie. But how does Jeff not realize that Robbie has lost a step. Now maybe he was just getting stale in Chicago and it was time to change, but I believe he has now been brought in by 2 teams and hasn’t come to terms with either of them. So either he wants too much money or they don’t think he is worth league min.

    • BearDown100393

One step back for Gould is 3 steps forward for #Barf

    • BerwynBomber

I am with Blogfather on this one, though I get your point about Robbie potentially wanting too much money.

But if Connor Barth can find a team, I don’t see why Gould couldn’t.

      • Huge Bears Penis

unless he sucks more than Barf

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

I’m still coming to terms with the fact that the Bears screwe’d the pooch on the Kicker position. Smh

  • James Jones going full homer.
    Never go full-homer Jones.

    Just ask Vadgers (nttawwt).

  • BerwynBomber

Pregame is all about WTF is up with Rodgers. Don’t even know if I have heard the word “Cutler” yet.

Btw, no wonder Rodgers has all day to throw. Looks like teams are rushing three, dropping seven in coverage, and keeping one spy near the line. At least that is what Old Sauce did last week, which befuddled the hell out of the Cheese.

    • Jes, that is what I said earlier.

      Others copied the Lovie/Fangio playbook.

But that assumes Vadgers remains inexplicably inaccurate, or that Jordy is still struggling.

      • BerwynBomber

Or that McCarthy is more of an idiot than we thought.

  • SC Dave

You know what? I’m actually going out to watch this shit-show live, instead of waiting until tomorrow morning to watch the replay. With luck, the sound will be low enough that I can ignore the assholes in the booth.

I’ll try not to be too stupid posting.

    Wish me luck!

    • willbest

      Good luck

      • SC Dave

Thanks! I’m prolly gonna need it. I suppose I could just turn off my phone.

        • Huge Bears Penis

          yes turn it off.

“On this week’s episode of the Weekend Show, very little happens.”

Kind of like Hoyer, in the Red Zone.

  • PaceBot 2000

Choosing to watch the Bears over the Cubs….

    #sickness

  • McPheeeee!

I think he just said, “Lets make everyone watching realize pain”

    prediction. PAIN!

    • Huge Bears Penis

i have a bad feeling it will be painful watching the Bears tonight.

  • Yeah, they all picked the Pack last year laughing too.

    Keep it up, dipshits.

  • Adams miraculously recovered from a concussion in 3 days

  • Kuuuuushh

    Larsen benched again

  • Man, if Hoyer was on that Orton team…

  • Huge Bears Penis

LOL… Packers “Color Rush” uniforms are all white.

  • BerwynBomber

    GMen flying Gould to London.

    • Huge Bears Penis

      why?

    • Shouldn’t the Gmen just hole tryouts in England?

An entire country of football kicking fanatics, one of them must know how to kick FGs

      • SC Dave

How about not getting destroyed on the kickoff?

  • chitownproud85

lol @ stats, the current league rankings for Bears: 7th Offense, 11th Defense, 4th Passing, 23rd rushing. Oi vey.

    • 31st in scoring, and pretty high in penalties I’m guessing.

We’re just finding ways to lose. Like when Merdith fumbled. When Barf missed a gimme. When Porter fell and allowed a 51 yd TD….

Gotta step up in key situations, stats be damned.

  • T’Challa

    Go Bears!

  • Let’s see if they go double TE right away

  • Huge Bears Penis

    Go Referees!!!

    • SC Dave

      Woot!!

  • T’Challa

Let’s see if they get positive yards on the first play? Nope

  • T’Challa

    4th down already? Darn

  • Stepped up in the pocket at least.

Looked like some contact on Alshon, but we’ll see

  • willbest

Cut 44 for not jumping on that

  • SC Dave

Could have flagged roid boy on tjat, but im glad they didnt

Coirse, if we did that to rodgers, our guy would be ejected

  • T’Challa

    The LT was holding Floyd.

    • willbest

      But LT’s name isn’t Leno

  • Vadgers already bitching

  • Bears are spying

  • willbest

Adams cleared concussion protocol in 4 days? Bullshit

  • SC Dave

    Le blanc sighting?

  • Just rush 3. Fuck it.

  • willbest

    Floyd… You gotta finish

  • T’Challa

    Good pressure by Floyd

  • SC Dave

    Licky bastard

  • willbest

    Who is bausby?

    • T’Challa

From KC practice squad I believe last year. He has been on our PS this year.

  • Glad to see we’re not the only ones that throw it short of the marker

  • SC Dave

I thought the bitch was gonna get the first, but Freeman…

  • SC Dave

Not that it matters. Have we stopped a 4th down all season?

  • when Montgomery lines up in the back, COVER THE FLATS

  • willbest

    That will do

  • T’Challa

The Bears have to realize that Green Bay is running a lot of misdirection and quick sets. Adjust and stop it.

    • I say we rush 3 when Montgomery is back there. Make a WR beat us in the run game.

Fangio actually going against the grain and blitzing. Got burned twice so far on them

      • T’Challa

Aaron’s quick release will kill the blitz. Spying on the WR in the backfield is the best option.

  • SC Dave

    LeBlanc again… nice. Unexpectedly nice.

    • It seems like our CBs are trained to let them catch and knock it out of hands.

      Houston was doing that too.

      • SC Dave

        Peanut channel?

  • SC Dave

Baseball is soooo boring on TV. Not better than the commercials with girls in tight shorts

    • willbest

      Cubs winning yet?

  • SC Dave

    I miss Hester

    • willbest

To mean Hester from a decade ago

      • SC Dave

Yup. Most exciting Bear since Sayers

  • SC Dave

Dead fucking heat on points scored in 198 games. Surreal

  • T’Challa

What a waste when it comes to Massie

  • SC Dave

    Massie = suckness

  • Nice Bellamy!

  • T’Challa

Great play on the ball by Bellamy

    • SC Dave

      Next man up!!

      • T’Challa

        Without Royal, yep!

  • willbest

    What the hell hoyer

    • Johnnywad

I’m sorry. He fucking sucks. He can’t make that throw?

      • Johnnywad

For that matter, he’s struggling to put in Alshon’s catch radius.

      • SC Dave

Cutler makes at nest half those. Which is better than Hoyer.

  • SC Dave

    Good call, bad throw

  • T’Challa

Hoyer finally throw the ball more than 10 yards and overthrow his man. Come on. Let’s go!

  • SC Dave

    Okay, 3 and out, defense.

Or two and out, on the pick six

  • That’s not gonna help out Hoyer’s long ball %

The passing game seems just a little more off than usual. Those throws to Alshon were close, but not enough.

  • EnderWiggin

    New Thread

I guess this is the game that Hoyer gets exposed as a fraud.
