Bears Sign Cardinals OT Bobby Massie, Move Kyle Long Back Inside

| March 9th, 2016

massie

Three thoughts:

  • Massie is a solid, professional tackle. He’s not elite but the Bears don’t necessarily need elite on the right edge.
  • I was excited earlier today thinking the Bears might sign Jeff Allen to play right guard. Instead they’ll start one of the best guards in the sports: Kyle Long.
  • Love that this Bears front office doesn’t run from roster deficiencies. Stubborn regimes of yesteryear would have kept Long outside and ignored a majority of the 2015 tape.

    First!!

  • 505Bears

    The O.G. Bobbie Massie

  • MB30SD

    tracy porter resigned too.

    like him

  • MikeBrownhadaPosse

I had a really good first post all ready to go too.
    :*(

  • 505Bears

Does Kyle move back inside or over to LT? I hope they just kick him back inside.

    • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Jahns says sources tell him Long goes back to guard.

      • SC Dave

        Absolutely the right decision.

        • That Guy

Its a choice between a perennial probowler at guard or a maybe above average right tackle. The choice is clear in my mind.

And its not like Long won’t be playing outside again at some point. Injuries happen.

      • BillW

So we got a ProBowl guard in Free Agency today. Great deal.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

coaches have been really high on Leno at LT.

      • MB30SD

so what are we talking about:

        Leno, Slauson, whatshisface, Long, Massie?

        • 505Bears

whatshisface better be hitting the weight room. He got bitch slapped around a bit last year when he was in

          • MB30SD

no,not grassu, the dude who was good who got injured

oh shit, that was montgomery. is grassu the starter?!

          • 505Bears

            I think so?

          • BillW

Montgomery was on a 1 year deal. Can’t find anything else about his rehab or Bears plans for him.

          • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

what about getting Jeff Allen at LG, move Slauson to Center and let Barrett Jones and Grasu develop and increase their girth in the meantime.

          • BillW

Allen already signed with someone (Houston?)

          • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

well scratch my Jeff Allen idea then.

          • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

Since when is Barrett Jones a Bear?

          • BillW

I think he means the PS guy referred to in the other thread.

          • BillW

Nope, I’m wrong. That was another OL guy.

          • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

thought we got him in 2015?

          • 505Bears

Bears signed him to the practice squad from some other team, then I think some other team picked him up off of that…I think he is with the Eagles now?

          • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

well scratch my Barrett Jones idea then.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

            Yep.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

whatshisface will benefit from having Slauson and Long on each side. anything would be better than Vlad Dickass or Pat Omygod at guard

      • Johnnywad

They also say they really like Shea without so much as cracking a smile. So who knows?

  • burntorangenavyblue

This makes me happy to see Long back inside. Tired of the shuffling around of players out of position

  • Huge Bear’s Penis

Porter contract 3-year deal worth $16.5M

    • willbest

So a 2-year 11 million or so? solid deal.

    • AlbertInTucson

Fair to assume HE gets better when the front 7 does…?

      • willbest

He is going to be 30 when the season starts. Not as critical for CB, but his best years are behind him.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Yeah. So are MINE.

  • Trac

I am loving Pace ‘ s style so far. The guy is about finding solid blue chip pieces to compete the puzzle.

    • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

Long must have hated being out there at tackle.

He’s really boning his career going back inside.

      • BillW

On PFT there is a link to his tweet with a bunch of weird looking icons that he said were “hallelujah” symbols.

        http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/09/bears-sign-tackle-bobby-massie-so-kyle-long-can-be-a-guard-again/

        • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

          I see that.

He’s thrilled to move back inside. Ok, fine – that’s where he likes to play. He likes being a mauler without the need for the footwork.

Mastering that footwork and locking down RT for 10 years is the path to Canton.

          Inside is not.

          • BillW

As a Bear fan, I really don’t care if he ends up in Canton or not. I want them to have best line they can get.

          • CanadaBear

Things change all the time. Who knows where Kyle will end up before it’s all over. Just glad the big bastard plays for the Beloved.

          • SC Dave

There are guards in the hall

          • burntorangenavyblue

No team is thinking 10 years into the future, more like 2 to 3. Who cares about Canton? Long enjoys inside? So be it!

      • SC Dave

Disagree. He will make enough per year, and may play several more years at guard

    • BillW

I love the fact he has a real plan and contingencies should one move or another not work out.

  • AlbertInTucson

Signing Massie is like a 2 for one, enabling them to move Long over.

    • AlbertInTucson

This, of course, assumes Massie is at least capable.

decision carried over from last years FA period…they tampered with Maclin, contacting him directly instead of his agent.

        • SC Dave

          Ok… thank for the detail

    • BillW

But did they get the guy they wanted? Maybe worth it?

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

I suppose – they got decent production out of him. I don’t like the guy, but hey, it’s only a 3rd and a 6th.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

Maclin scored more TD last year than all WR on the team the year before.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Well, that’s basically meaningless when you’re talking about the KC wide receiving corps.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

            i know.

  • 505Bears

Does this decrease what it will cost the Bears to resign Long? Gs are usually paid less than Ts

    • SC Dave

Probably notmuch. Not sure Kyle has to care.. family is loaded

    • burntorangenavyblue

Probably not, Long is the best at that position. I would pay up for him

    • willbest

The raiders guard just got $12 million a year. Long will be fine.

  • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

Chargers taking Travis Benjamin off the table. Wanted him.

  • Blackhawks63

Massie signing tells me the Bears will still look to draft an Offensive Lineman early in the draft.

    • They can’t possibly be sold on Grassu, but I don’t think it’s a priority anymore, unless they view Massie as more of a swing OT.

      • Johnnywad

Grassu is only missing 1000 extra calories a day in the form of peanut butter and jellies and Tru Moo chocolate milk. He’ll be fine in September

    • Blackhawks63

It’s called “the draft.” That’s where your d lineman are.

      • Sactowns#1

I want 2. TWO immediate impact D lineman.

        • Blackhawks63

Rome wasn’t built in a day. You will get a key defensive line piece, probably in round 1 or round 2 of the draft. Maybe both.

          • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

You get Ashawn Robinson in 1.
            Kenny Clark in 2.

    • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

if a quarterback is taken anywhere in the first 5 rounds I will not watch the season. It means that Pace is not serious about winning. Look at the Broncos 2012 late round draft picks. It’s effectively the reason they won the superbowl.

      • Plus Sized Danish Van Dyke

not to mention that Jones is as big a project as Tebow was.

        • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

I think Jones is a very interesting player but his lack of game tape and the fact that he didn’t run away with the QB job this year scares me….oh, and the fact that half of our defense from last year won’t be playing meaningful football ever again. D, D and more D. So much D that you can barely mouth the words “no more D”.

        • And he’s inj, naturally.

I’d take him in the 6th if there’s no stud KR or some guy who slipped.

      • willbest

Drafting a QB in the 4th thru 7th rounds is a bigger waste than drafting a punter/kicker. But you are right drafting a QB before 6. The result is I would shiv the person next to me if the bears drafted a QB this year. And thus I will not be watching the draft with anybody present.

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

there are a couple posters on here that I could recommend you watching the draft with.

      • SC Dave

I call Bullshit with the capital B. You will watch regardless and you, and all of us, know it.

        • willbest

Which is why I only threatened to shiv somebody, which is far and away more likely than not watching the Bears.

        • Cutty of Mt. Olivet Nazarene

I’ll amend my statement. Top 3 rounds.

    • Irish Sweetness

      Not happening. No way.

  • chitownproud85

I remember the days where I LONGED for a big name FA signing to hype up this time of year. Goddamn that was stupid(I still do not regret Cutler/Peppers excitement, for the record). I’m really happy with our “day 1”. So far, nothing but affordable upgrades that wont cause that buyers remorse shit a year or two down the road. LETS GET THE DRAFT RIGHT and try winning for more than just a single, overachieving season. Thumbs up so far. Are there any “goddamn that was stupid” signings left available? I dont see any names out there that make me think “yeah, hes going to break the bank” but maybe I’m whiffing on somebody.

    • Sactowns#1

Mason Crosby is gonna make millions yo!

    • Sactowns#1

Fleener will probably make more than he should as will Janoris Jenkins.

      • chitownproud85

I can see Janoris. Fleener is kind of interesting. I have a fear for our TE position this year. The easiest solution is to re sign zach, but honestly, im not sure i really want them to do that. the guy worked his dick off and came back time and again, and was very productive – but goddamnit, it was once. just once. any chance he doesnt get nearly what hes looking for in FA and comes back for nil? Cant see it. Cant see Uni coming back. TE black hole.

  • A few thoughts:

    1) That Tracy Porter contract is fucking stupid. The guy sucked for years, had 2 good months last year, and then sucked for the last 5-6 weeks. And he’s always hurt. $5M a year for that? No fucking way. I hope they structure that so they can cut him next year after he sucks this year.

    2) I hate moving Kyle Long back to OG. Absolutely hate it. He had flashes of dominance at RT last year w/ no prep time. Give him an offseason and see what he can do. I’d rather start him at LT this year than RG. They have a lot more faith in Leno than I do. Leno’s a competent pass blocker and a terrible run blocker.

All in all, not thrilled with their moves so far today. Hope I’m wrong.

    • Also, not all that sold on Massie. He’s not terrible, but he’s not good either. I don’t think they upgraded RT today.

For less $$, I’d much rather have Long at RT and a competent RG (say, Louis Vasquez).

    • SC Dave

Agree except for kyle thing. Permanent best in league player is awesome at any position.

      • chitownproud85

This. We dont actually KNOW that he would end up a great tackle. We already know he is a great guard. I definitely understand both sides of the argument, but i have no issues with the thought of him locking down one of our guard spots for a decade.

        • he was a streaky yet adequate OT last year. With 4 days to prepare.

Massie is more consistent, but about the same caliber as Long was last year IMO.

If you assume Long gets better this year, like he did year 2 at OG, then they just downgraded RT, albeit massively upgrading RG.

          • Irish Sweetness

Draft still to come. We might have OT in the first.

        • SC Dave

I could see a decade and a half

    • I thought they would take a guy like Vasquez (or Brooks) too and stay the course on Long at RT, but what I saw is Long struggle at RT.
Yes, he’s very inexperienced there, but I don’t think Long can play in space or has the requisite footwork to be out there.

His strength is his playing in close, being physical, plowing forward, not sidekicking.

Massie is not all that. Honestly, he seems more of a swing tackle to me. RT shouldn’t be off our list in the draft.

      • I’m still worried about LT.

And you don’t pay a guy $6M to be a swing tackle.

        • chitownproud85

Agree here, too. Was Leno that damn good and I just didnt notice? I’m not exactly a blocking/lineman expert, so maybe…

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

one plus is the blog wasn’t bitching about him week in and week out like we have so many other LTs that have played for us.

          • Sactowns#1

How DARE you mention Orlando Pace on this blog!!

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

ssshhh!!! NO NAMES!!! you will curse us. besides i was referring to Webb.

          • And here I thought you meant Frank Omiyale

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

damn you, I just had a flashback. i am going to the corner to lay down in the fetal position.

          • Irish Sweetness

Maybe because we only notice bad performances on the OL when Cutty is on his back. But we weren’t exactly the pony express there ….. I thought the problem was at C and RG … maybe it was in 3 out of 5 spots. Not good.

          • IMO he’s a competent pass blocker and a bad run blocker.

Which makes him a great backup or a bad starter. Your choice.

        • we’re all sort crossing our fingers with Leno at LT.

How a guy could play like garbage at OG than become a starter on LT is crazy.

Go figure. Just hope it works out.

          • SC Dave

Maybe the pros just know more than us

          • Then explain Webb at LT or Hester at WR, or Manamuela, Archulata, Orlando Pace…(excuse me while I quietly sob)

          • Johnnywad

            Different pros.

          • SC Dave

And like so many, i dont get the shea thing. But this is not the first staff that for some reason talks him up. Whether he makes it to, and survives, camp is an intriguing story.

Like a defective story or some such.

Similar to figuring out why people would vote for Bernie or Donald.

            Or even more mysteriously, Hillary.

          • Irish Sweetness

I must be like a beaten wife, but it was his first year at Mike, his reactions would (one hopes) improve with a greater understanding and feel for the position other guys have been playing since they were young. It’s his smarts that people keep him around for. Maybe he’s smart enough to do it eventually, to learn a position that quickly. The weight room, and time learning may be all he needs. And nobody else is going to pay him big bucks.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Different, misguided regime.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Frank “The omelette” Omiyale.

          • he was bad at RT, not OG. And at LT he was a competent pass blocker and bad run blocker IMO. Not a glaring liability, but not somebody I’m thrilled with starting either.

On the plus side, Long at RG means Bears have one of the top OG duos in the NFL. And their interior line are all very agile, which creates lots of options for traps/creative play calls on interior runs.

        • Irish Sweetness

You pay him 6M as insurance if Tayo doesn’t work out.
Plus, they may have their eye on Ronnie Stanley in the draft (or whoever). I never got the love for Leno. Maybe they love Conklin? We’ll need three OTs for sure. Have to protect goldenboy.

    • chitownproud85

I agree about Porter. 5m a year for anything in FA isnt exactly “overspending”(they are, for the player, just not in FA terms…), but I just dont really get it. All I can think is that the view of the rest of the CB roster is just SO SHIT that its like…hell…this turd doesnt smell quite as bad? Maybe thats it? I really feel like he could have been kept for cheaper, but again – Free Agency makes everybody nuts.

      • Paying Porter that is sorta damning Fuller. They just don’t believe in him enough.

If that was the going rate for a decent, albeit older, CB, so be it.

CBs are ALWAYS overpaid in FA.

And this is why I keep refraining the same thing over and over again.

WHY do teams give out 1 year deals?!

It should be cheap 2 year deals exactly for this reason.

1 year a team is left wondering if it’s a fluke or not.

Look at Young’s deal. That should be how we sign everyone.

        • Porter has nothing to do with Fuller. You need 3-4 starting CBs, and Fuller is only 1 of them. Even if they’re sold on Callahan as another, they needed at least 1 more.

And veteran players won’t sign minimum, no guarantee deals for more than 1 year. That’s what Porter was last year. A flyer to keep his career alive.

          • I think if they thought Fuller was a true #1CB, then they wouldn’t feel as urgent to pony up for Porter.

But the Bears see Porter as their #1 taking on the better WR, and if that’s the case, $5M for that is relatively cheap.

          • Irish Sweetness

Even signing Porter, we need to go after Sean Smith. If we don’t have 3 starting caliber CBs, we’re failing to prepare.

I’d rather Long at RG than Omameh or Ducasse – not that they’re coming back – but Tayo is still there, he’s learning. Don’t know anything about Massie.

  • Kinda glad noTEs are off yet.
I’m still holding out for Greene, but I guess at this point, I’d settle for baby girly thor, Fleener.

Wonder what’s up with Miller. If he bolts, he’s a gigantic dick.

NO ONE gave him a chance. We did. He produced, then he cashes in?

Show a smidgen of gratitude, Miller.

    • willbest

Didn’t Greene sign with the Steelers? I also heard a Graham to Chicago rumor. Which terrified me.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

it was reported Greene was going to be signing with the Steelers about an hour before FA started. so who knows, maybe another team made a good offer to slow down the process.

      • MikeBrownhadaPosse

If it was a headsup trade of him and Bennett, id take that.

    • SC Dave

Its a business, yall say when they kick Forte to the curb. Goes both ways.

In other words, no more or less a gigantic dick than Pace.

      • I understand them wanting $, but if it’s about the same, then sign with the team that gave u a shot.

Also, it’s not as if Forte didn’t play hardball with his contract with the Bears either. If GB would’ve offered Forte a bigger deal than the Jets, he’d be in green and gold.

        • willbest

What is about the same to you? Also keep in mind that your tax lawyer can look at your NFL schedule and with exception of playoff and the 2 SOS games tell you roughly what you will make in each team. And you might say what $250k when you are talking $10 million, but $250k used to buy a life insurance policy on you to benefit your kids is going to be a couple million dollars extra inheritance for them.

          • I would say it depends on what Miller is going to get paid.

If he’s getting paid chump change, then $250K is a lot.
If he’s going to get paid like Allen or Fleener, I don’t think it’s THAT much of a diff, relatively speaking.

Also, he’s sorta established a brand in CHI, so I’m sure he can get endorsements to set it off.

Might be the same where he goes, but what if he goes to a much smaller market like KC?

So, if he’s getting a good contract and it’s like 200K, stick with the team that gave u a shot.

But, as they say, only in america, so whatever he chooses, doesn’t really matter in the end.

          • SC Dave

The bears have shown that they dont care about loyalty. The players should feel no obligation to do so

          • willbest

Well unless his name was Shea, they haven’t.

          • SC Dave

Huh? He was under contract for cheap, and was better in their minds than whoever else they coud put in the position. Loyalty would be signing him again.

          • willbest

If nobody is willing to pay shea more than vet min, I bet he gets brought back for depth.

          • Johnnywad

What do you mean by loyalty? And what team in the NFL is loyal?

If you mean re-signing older vets likely unable to produce at something resembling peak levels, no winning organization does that. That’s Jerry Angelo/Lovie Smith stuff. It doesn’t work.

“It’s BUSINESS, Sonny. Not PERSONEL.” -Tom Hagen.

        • SC Dave

You have zero idea. For all any of us know, Matt could not stomach the idea of being Puke

And your comment on playing hardball is idiotic since Pace said they weren’t even going to talk about it

          • willbest

Exactly. Matt may not give one wit about the Bears organization or the rivalry, but he might respect the fans enough that a couple hundred thousand might not matter too much.

      • Johnnywad

I really felt they handled the Forte exit with a lot of class. It didn’t seem like a kick to the curb at all. Once Pace decided he was moving on, it was all about how. It went down very well.

        • SC Dave

I dont disagree. But I wont condemn Miller for going for the best deal, justlike Pace thought he was

so Teams that lost the most so far

    Denver: Trevathan(CHI), Jackson(JAX), Osweiler(TEX)

Browns: Alex Mack (ATL), Travis Benjamin (SD), Mitchell Schwartz (KC), Tashaun Gipson (JAX).

    • Browns and Broncos really hit hard for opposite reasons.

Browns due to suckage. Broncs due to success.

    • AlbertInTucson

Mack opted out of his very recent deal to escape the stench.

    • willbest

My Brother in law is a Browns fan. Even after 2014 I was able to say, at least I am not like him.

Donks sort of ended up in a cap crunch, they had to pay about about 750k in Cap from last year when Manning earned his $4 million bonuses for the AFCC and SB win.

  • Jets should trade Mo and their entire draft for Jay to complete their Bear set.

    • willbest

Did BMarsh comment publicly about any sympathies about his brother in law or congratulations about his daughter? Because its possible the bromance ended in 2014

      • True. But I think I remember reading that whenever Bmarsh talked, Forte just rolled his eyes.

It would make for a good NYJ drama.

        • willbest

I thought it was a contractual obligation as a NYJ to create drama. Or was that the old GM.

        • CanadaBear

When BMarsh went on about accountability and tried to blame Cutler in a roundabout way, Forte spoke up and pointed out BMarsh was also a little shy on accountability. I’m guessing they won’t be exchanging X-mas cards.

          • Irish Sweetness

I’m totally with Brandon on that. He’s a winner, and Cutty was apparently not interested in being the best version of himself for a long time.
Accountability. All for it. it’s what makes winners. Sounds like Forte added to the problem.

But, and I reiterate – nobody on here knows what happened in that locker room.

          • willbest

BMarsh has never played in the playoffs. Hard to call the guy a winner.

          • CanadaBear

That’s true but who would you guess was talking out their ass, BMarsh or Forte?

  • So, after Fitz completely shit the bed in the playoffs, the Jets say thanks but no thanks?

Man, at least we’re not the Broncos.
When your entire QB roster consists of Trevor SEMEN …

          • Johnnywad

Fitz backing up Jay would be about as good as it gets

            quite an unfortunate surname

          • willbest

Fitz is going to get $17 million from Denver, San Fran, or the Jets. Vikings could actually probably use him the most, they would just be too stubborn to admit it.

          • Irish Sweetness

Well, yes. Now, certainly. I’m thinking 12M knowing Elway.

          • willbest

If Elway can offer Oz $16 million he can offer Fitz $17

  • willbest

I am sort of surprised Kelly hasn’t brought in RG3 to back up Kap.

Chiefs re-signed DT Jaye Howard to a two-year, $12 million contract.

The Chiefs are getting the band back together on defense with Howard, Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson all agreeing to new contracts. Howard logged a career-high 5.5 sacks last season while playing all over the Chiefs’ defensive line. – Roto

Chief’s got smacked with loss of draft picks for tempering. Apparently, Andy Reid talked to Jermey Maclin before the start of FA last year.

      • AlbertInTucson

        That’s the story.

    • good. Hope that sets Hicks’ market. Reasonable.

      • Irish Sweetness

Goldman. Hicks. Terry Fucking Williams. DTs sorted.

  • AlbertInTucson

“Massie is a solid, professional tackle.”

    Hope so.

My local Sports talk radio guys were not sorry to see the Cards lose Massie.

And O-Line has hardly be a Cardinals’ strength in recent years.

  • BerwynBomber

I like the signings. Trevathan is a no-brainer. Porter has always impressed me as an underappreciated commodity; he is a sort of a poor man’s DeAngelo Hall. But we are his fifth team so there is that. Massie seems okay too. He was suspended 3 games last year due to DUI so that will bear watching in terms if he has any further run-ins with law or gets popped with a PED. At that point he would become a two-time offender with presumably a longer suspension.

Still, these moves make sense. Will they put us over the top? No. But incrementally they will help and Trevathan alone should be a big difference — a McPhee-like influence on the D.

    • Johnnywad

Green Bay’s misplaced confidence in their ability to draft their entire roster is beginning to catch up with them. In fact, the entire division is beginning to catch up with them.

The real wild card for me, is how Jordy Nelson returns from the ACL. They’re still very dangerous is he reverts to form.

      • burntorangenavyblue

Not only that, but the cracks are already visible between Rodgers and the coach. It’s been widening moreso as of late

        • BerwynBomber

Sounds more like cracks between McCarthy and Thompson.

          • both u and burnt are correct.

            Losing does that.

          • MB30SD

my peaches, a mid-season sideline meltdown would be absolutely delicious.

      • BerwynBomber

Nelson will be big, but, in the post-season at least, their practice squad receivers began to contribute — Janis and Abberderis. Plus, they’ll have Montgomery healthy too.

The big thing for the Pack will be a) their O-line, and b) their run D. Those are their biggest weaknesses.

Agreed about Thompson’s philosophy starting to show limitations.

      • Irish Sweetness

Which is why we need a Sean Smith, and (boo hoo) a guy like Iloka to bracket him with.

  • BerwynBomber

So our NFCN rivals did nothing the first day of FA, save a couple of re-signings, most noteworthy being the Lions resigning Ngata.

Btw, does anyone know how the Megatron retirement affects DET’s cap?

    • Irish Sweetness

      Lions signed Marvin Jones FWIW.

  • MB30SD

    OMG, trac…. can’t WAIT to see the young messiah… you? ; )

  • Irish Sweetness

Nice to wake up and see Trevathan is a Bear, but there is not a great deal of hope if we are going ahead with McClellin as the other ILB. I can’t see Pace drafting Ragland at 11, I can’t see him dropping down … so something needs to happen with a guy like Jerrell Freeman – solid, but nothing special ILB who is good in coverage to complement the run-thumper.

Does signing Tracy mean we’re not going after Sean Smith?

Signing Akiem Nicks would be a real relief.

    Alabama pro day :

Derrick Henry worked out at WR! Scouts were impressed at his route running, dashing concerns that he was a one-trick pony. This guy could be a rare talent. He can help you in the passing game, and with his size and speed, you have to make those ‘business decisions’ when you tackle him, as Deion used to say.

At DT, A’Shawn Robinson had a very good workout. Jarran Reed had an outstanding one.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000642980/article/derrick-henry-shows-off-receiving-skills-at-alabamas-pro-day

    • CanadaBear

CD is not under contract to the Bears. The only way he comes back is if Pace goes out of his way to sign him. Please no.

  • That Guy

Notable FA’s that are still not spoken for:

    – Eric Weddle, S – 31 years old and coming off some injuries, but still probably has some good play left in him for another 2-3 years.
    – Reggie Nelson, S – 32 years old, but again, has 2-3 years left in him.
    – Casey Heyward, CB – I like this guy as a value defensive back. Not sure if he fits Fangio’s plan, but would love to steal him from GB.
    – Sean Smith, CB – Good contributor for KC, but like Porter his value might be inflated by a hot streak.
    – Arian Foster, RB – Foster is a really good back when he’s healthy. He’s also 30. He can’t be the bell cow for a team anymore. But what about a team with two young studs that needs a third back to add to the rotation? Interesting option there.
    – Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB – Give him a one year deal as the backup like we did for Campbell? Could be an option if nobody offers him starter money.
    – Akeim Hicks, DE/DT – A depth guy on the D-line. Good value signing in a week or so.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Fitzpatrick as a backup?

      I don’t THINK so, Guy.

He’ll be looking for (and getting) a starter’s job and the money that goes with it in this QB-Starved league.

“Foster is a really good back when he’s healthy.”

Except he hasn’t been healthy for the better part of 2 seasons, he’s coming off a torn achilles and at 30 isn’t likely to be getting healthier.

      • That Guy

I agree on Fitz. Except that Chase Daniels got a deal and Fitz didn’t and the first day of free agency just ended.

Of all the teams to watch on that front… maybe Denver?

        • AlbertInTucson

I think Denver is a possibility. I wonder if the move of Osweiler blindsided them?

Two cogs out of their mighty defense and the heir-apparent starting QB.

Not a good day in the Mile-High city.

      • That Guy

Foster is a boom or bust prospect. You put him on the roster for small money with playing time incentives. He could easily do a deal with $1.4M base plus another $100K per game roster bonus. That’s not a bad deal given his age and history.

        • AlbertInTucson

I don’t see him as worthwhile to a team in the Bears’ position, even if he could stay healthy wich, I don’t think he can. They re-signed Jacquizz so that kind of fills the “veteran back” situation.

          • Irish Sweetness

Our backs are all really small though, and with Henry working out well at WR at his pro day … how do we not draft him somehow? We need a banger. Every team needs a banger.

          • AlbertInTucson

We need a defense that scares someone besides Bear fans, first.

      • Irish Sweetness

Fitzy? He’ll be in the playoffs with the Broncos. Oh wait, they have half a defense now.

We should sign Smith just for his 6’3. Got to have a 6’3 guy hanging around.

        Nicks would be sweet.

      • MB30SD

        weddle please

  • Bears got Trevathan for 4 years, $24M, $12M guaranteed.

HTF does that even happen in this market. That’s about what he should get, you usually figure 1.5x that in FA.

        ohhhhhhhh, maaaagic!

      • it’s actually fair market value or Trevathan, IMO. Borderline top 10 ILB money for a borderline top 10 ILB.

That never happens on day 1 of FA. Usually pay ~150%, which is what I was expecting here.

Fleener has average hands and might be the easiest person in the NFL to
    tackle.” Indymarc

  • Bold FA prediction.

Bradford will get traded to the Donks

  • Ah, shite, it’s official. Miller, time, I guess?

Steelers signed TE Ladarius Green, formerly of the Chargers, to a four-year, $20 million contract.

The match couldn’t be more perfect on paper for both playerand team. With Heath Miller’s unexpected retirement following the season, the Steelers needed an all-around tight end, and Green fits the bill. Green first found his way onto the field in San Diego because he knew how to block. It’s an added bonus because Green is already a gifted athlete at 6’6/240. He ran a 4.56 forty at the 2012 Combine witha 10-foot-4 broad jump. He’s dripping with upside with Ben Roethlisberger in one of the game’s top-three passing offenses and out of Antonio Gates’ shadow. – Roto

Saints officially released CB Brandon Browner and used the post June 1 designation on him to save salary-cap space.

is he worth anything? I know he had a good year a couple years ago but haven’t heard anything since and he will be 32 by start of season
