Audibles From the Long Snapper: Five Guys In Need of a Solid Sunday

| December 29th, 2016

In only four days, it ends.

WHO COULD USE A SOLID SUNDAY?

  • Matt Barkley. #Barkleytime has something. Call it moxie. Call it guts. Call it chutzpah. Does he have the physical tools of an Aaron Rodgers or Jay Cutler? No. But he’s certainly shown over his first five starts that he has enough to make it as a quarterback in the NFL. Barkley can go a long way towards cementing his inarguably successful 2016 by rebounding from his poor performance a week ago. And it would be hard to see him not playing a prominent role in Bourbonnais if he played well Sunday in Minnesota.
  • John Fox. Don’t think there’s any chance of his being fired because injuries (especially at QB) and suspensions (to 2 of the Bears 5 best players) will give him a free pass into 2017. But neither Fox nor Ryan Pace want to see the head coach finish this season being walloped twice. While not winning, the Bears fought almost every single week and kept most games close. Fox needs to show his team still, even as the season concludes, wants to fight for him.
  • Jonathan Bullard. Let’s be honest, Bullard has had a nothing rookie season. When the coaching staff is playing Mitch Unrein instead of you, it probably means you’re Mitch Ungood. But Bullard flashed against Washington – his first flashes all year – and a second consecutive decent performance could help the rookie’s confidence as he heads into a pivotal offseason for his development.
  • Charles Leno. The Bears starting left tackle received a glowing endorsement from Pace last offseason and has performed well overall in 2016. But he had unquestionably his worst performance of the season against Washington, allowing Preston Smith to walk around him as he carved the man’s bust for Canton. If Leno wants to hold onto his starting role in 2017 he might not want to leave Pace with the taste of two howlers to close out the campaign.
  • Adrian Amos. Injuries have been the biggest disappointment of 2016. Amos is the runner-up. The safety was never expected to display dominant ball skills but his struggles in run support (poor angling, inefficient tackling…etc.) have left many believing the Bears need two new players at the position in 2017 to become an elite defensive unit.

Enjoy!

First to say we need to lose the game so we keep the third pick but play hard, just saying……….

    • Scharfinator

      You’re certainly not the first.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

        Jess!

  • SC Dave

It would be a good thing were Bullard to at become good enough to overtake Unrein in the rotation. That would give the staff enough confidence to put Unrein in the offensive backfield inside the 5 yard line so we get TDs.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

There are not enough smart football playa’s anymore. Learning the playbook is a big problem these days.

  • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

Amos doesn’t need a solid Sunday. He needs a sturdy pair of reasonably priced black dress shoes and some cheap suits because he’s going to be washing cars at Enterprise in about 1.5yrs after being cut from his second team.
A god amongst normal men but a fucking trashball compared to other NFL safeties.

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

I long for years of good football.

      That is all.

      cut from his 2nd team?

I was in the minority thinking Amos would step up this year. Yeah, that went well.

      • Make RedZone Conv% Great Again

meaning, he will be cut from this team, wind up on another squad and get cut again. Watch Amos play and realize that Conte truly was a better safety. I know it’s crazy to say but it’s true. Amos is brutal. Amos is Afalava. Afalava is Mike Green. Amos is Mike Green.

    • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Rent from Enterprise, they’ll pick you up! (Except they stopped that and now are staffed with the C students from Sigma Nu.)

        lol, this is true.

I was almost a sn at my alma mater… But they got kicked off campus the year we were pledging. It was okay they were mostly football players anyway

  • CanadaBear

Can’t argue about any of this. It’s going to be a crazy off season with the Bears being so flush with cash. Looking at the roster there are a lot of players on the team with a decent amount of experience that might get launched in the off season. Not counting the young subs because who knows if any of them come back but just off the top of my head these guys are all candidates to be cut/not re-signed; Carey/Langford, Cutler, Ego, Sutton, Fuller, Amos/Jones-Quartey, Houston, Young, Jeffery, Porter, Royal, Unrein and Q. Lots of guys like CornWash and Acho that I didn’t include, along with a bunch of the rookies/second year guys.

Was playing with some HTML tags. I guess I should learn more about tables and the like. It may be possible to embed them into posts, which would be nice.

    • SC Dave

Guys on the roster I think should stick. The more x’s, the more I want them. Many are under contract and so there is no particular worry for them other than being cut, of course. A lot of the single ‘x’ guys are IMO expendable, but there are many others that can go first and hence are not listed here.

The only one that stuck out to me was bullard. Gotta give homie one more year.

Also, I give alshon…. two thumbs down!

thumbs up & then thumbs down for you, pal!

        • Internet Smug Prick #9 (GP)

Agreed here. One star for Bullard?

Something happened to him. Unreported injury or something. Dude fell off the map.

        XXXXX Braverman

        • SC Dave

          Somebody had to do it!

      • SC Dave

Added Brown. On Bears talk, they said there has only been ONE ball sent his way that was not a completion. But that must have been after the Detroit game, because pro-fb-ref has him with 14 catches on 18 targets.

      • Wobbly Pop

I fully agree on Bullard at this point and am disappointed in him ! He appeared to have the tools and i thought would do well enough to be a decent rotational guy ! But 1 start it is ! I would give Nick K . another start as i just get the feeling he will grow into a special player before long BUT that is me and i respect your grades thanks !

    • Sactowns#1

Whats the predicted cap space for 2017?

      • CanadaBear
        • Sactowns#1

Oh man. The Bucs are going to be hard to contend with in the coming years. Glad they aren’t in our division anymore.

          • CanadaBear

If they take the next step (esp Winston) they would be a handful.

    • Wobbly Pop

Top 3 from a quick roll around my head i wish to see gone in no special order are Fuller since he seems not to wish to be here or want to play for some reason ! Royal since he has a larger price involved and seems to be on the sidelines way more than between them ! Wilson since he never filled his potential and is constantly injured thus useless ! Plenty of other on your list as well but those 3 just get in my craw ! GOOD SHOW BTW !

  • willbest

Leno was so uncharacteristically unLeno I am willing to bet he was either sick or hurt.

The only people this game has any meaning for are the depth guys who aren’t going to start for the bears

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

I would wanna see more of Kush.

Also, been saying it for about 3 weeks, but rest Howad. Last thing Bears need is him going to the lockeroom in a cart.

If we had a few games, could’ve found out if we should keep Langford or Carey.

Been wanting to see more of Bush, Hall, Houston-Carson, but apparently those guys are made of china.

      • SC Dave

Let Howard get the rookie record, and then sit him down. Preferably by halftime. Agree on Kush, but we’ve had too an great opportunity to see how guys look on IR.

So far as keeping Carey and Lankford, it’s “yes” and “no”.

        • willbest

It would be criminal to deny Howard the option to compete for that.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

            The Bears rookie record? Meh.
I guess if he wants it. I think he only needs like 50 yds to pass Forte or something.

If he was in ROY contention, it’d be a lil diff.

Just tired of seeing Bears get inj.

Howard and that Oline are our O going forward.

          • willbest

But at what point do you start looking like a chicken shit? I mean its their job to go out there and do that. Yeah they could get injured, but they could get injured at OTAs, camp or pre-season too.

You think Howard is so polished that he stands nothing to learn in this game? I would rather he play this one and sit out a pre-season game than play sit out this one and play in an additional preseason game.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

I don’t see how much more polished Howard can get in 1 more game, unless they’re gonna start doing things with him they really haven’t yet, like wheel routes, lining him up wide, maybe some wildcat, read, etc

Other than some more exotic plays, we know what he is. A HB with decent vision, blocking, great YAC, questionable route/hands.

Just takes one play where someone barrels into his leg the wrong way, and then we’re talking about drafting a HB high.

Other than perhaps the Bears rook record, absolutely NO reason to put him out there this late in the season.

Also, an added bonus, is making sure the bears LOSE to get that #3 pick.

          • willbest

So to be clear you think the risks of significant injury (ie. beyond a high ankle sprain, hamstring, etc) outweighs the chance to play in US Bank Stadium (a place the Bears will play every year) against a Defense they play every year.

            This seems dubious.

          • Sactowns#1

Idk if you can measure the impact of playing one game in a stadium. I can definitely measure the impact of injuries though.

          • willbest

But where does that logic end? The Bears were eliminated back in week 13. Why not pack everybody you are sure about for the season at that point.

What are you going to learn about Jeffery or Meredith? Why should they play? What about Whitehair? He is legit too.

If we ended the season against one of the AFCS opponents that you won’t see for 4 years then sure. But we play the Vikings twice a year. Learn how that defense works.

          • AlbertInTucson

Sayers’ mark was set in a 14 game season and his touches for the season were miniscule by today’s standards.

“If Jay Cutler played 16 healthy games next season with the Bears defense, they’d be well beyond a four-win team.” – Jeff

So? I want 11 wins and the division. Or at least 10 wins and a WC run. If the Bears don’t think they have that, then there is no point in keeping Cutler. I know he has 4 years left on his contract, but only 2 of those years are at value. If you keep Cutler you are saying we are going to win now. So you damn well better.

“Who would you like to start opening day for the Bears next season?”

Kaaya. Somebody kidnap his sister and force him to declare for the draft.

    • willbest

Here is Kaaya’s 4 TD passes from the rustbucket bowl or whatever he played in last night. 2 of them were the WR’s making plays, but 2 of the passes were legit.

      http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaafb/miami-qb-brad-kaaya-highlights-vs-west-virginia-282-pass-yards-4-td/vp-BBxFvQ1

      • SC Dave

Not particularly impressed by any of them; the loft to the back of the endzone was the best one. The third one was bad, where he floated the ball forcing his receiver to wait on it and get clocked by the DB when he SHOULD have scored untouched.

        • willbest

The knock on him is he doesn’t have a particularly strong arm, and not the most mobile, but people like his field of vision and his ability to digest the playbook. Perhaps after years of Jay Cutler I am overcorrecting for somebody that seems to have an exceptional football IQ and I am willing to risk a bit more on the physicality.

I don’t like Watson. I feel there is too much risk with a QB that runs a lot. Very few of them are super smart about it like Wilson or just super durable like Newton.

Turbisky I feel is too close to Cutler. Physically gifted, lots of sloppy habits.

Kizer I guess is the most well rounded. Maybe you get a Marcus Mariota out of him. But there seems to be a belief that he isn’t the hardest worker.

Admittedly all of this is based on internet reports and some youtube highlights.

Oh and to mention another draft possibility pick up our DB or maybe even Garret in the first and then grab Patrick Mahomes in the second round. Which is basically replacing Cutler with a 10 year younger version of himself and then hoping he has more talent than just his arm.

          • SC Dave

Is there any reason to think Kaaya is better than Barkley? Serious question.

          • willbest

Next year? No. Long term, who knows. I watched Brees and Brady play college ball up close, and I didn’t think either would translate into the NFL and both are going to go first ballot into Canton (unless they are both up the same year).

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

That pass to the back of the endzone really aggressive and perfect.

The rest were good, but not exactly ‘wow’ ones.

The pass where he had a guy near him also good.

I wonder what his stats are under pressure.

That’s one of the stats I do value.

The other being comp % (and what TYPE of throws).

Kaaya looks like a post though.

        • willbest

Sure. This wasn’t a highlight reel. This wasn’t even his best throws that game necessarily (he was 24 of 34 I believe). It just showed his TD passes last night.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Kaaya is slated for the top of the 2nd, though, right?

Unless of course he shoots up the draft a la Gabbert.

the Browns will likely screw us there.

They’ll likely draft Garret with #1, then QB with 33rd pick or trade up to back of1st.

          • Huge Bears Penis

Browns will have 2 first round picks in the top 10. They made a trade last year with Eagles that got them the Eagles 1st round pick.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Yeah, I forgot the Browns have like a million picks.
Might have another 1st-2nd if they trade Joe Thomas finally.

          • willbest

The Browns also get Philly’s pick which I think will be around #11 (Eagle’s are 10th right now I believe). So they can grab Garret and then pick up Turb, Kizer or Watson. Or they could grab one of the top corners and pick up somebody like Mahomes at the top of the 2nd.

So you are right, I doubt they grab a QB at #1. Not when there are questions at all of them and one of them is likely to fall. Plus Brown’s also have the Titan’s 2nd round pick, so they have plenty of capital to move up a few spots from the Eagle’s pick if they feel a need to go up and grab one of those QB’s

  • Sactowns#1

“Bears should keep developing LeBlanc and Fuller. But have to supplement with non-developmental players too. A bunch of em.”

Fuller after a promising rookie season where he logged 50 tackles, 5 INT, 10 PDs, and 3 FF regressed in 2015 to 2 INT, 9 PD, and 49 tackles (despite playing 2 more games). Then he decided to spend this year in a hot tub. He isn’t a 3-4 CB. Trade him to Seattle for a 6th rounder (5th if you are lucky) or someplace else he can be a system corner.

I hate to can a rook with 1 season being thrown to the wolves, but LeBlanc just doesn’t have it. But what more do you want from a UDFA. He was a camp body that got a shot. Quite frankly, if we line up anybody on our current roster at CB1 or 2 week 1 next year, I am going to be some mixture of disappointed and apprehensive

    • Tortured Bear fan

LeBlanc is a keeper, IDK if Fuller still wants to play in Chicago.

      • Johnnywad

I have no idea how you can watch Cre’von LaBlanc play football and call him a keeper. If he is on the 53 next year I’m going to flip out.

        • MB30SD

I had the exact same thought… WTF??

That dude needs to be on the fucking street the second the season ends.

          • Johnnywad

He covers like a Lab chasing a laser pointer.

          • MB30SD

            Turrible

          • CanadaBear

He was either in position and did a nice job or he was fucking awful. I did see a glimmer of hope with the guy but that’s all. ST’s/KR/PR.

          • Sauron’s right eyeball

Or like a chawowa covering a great dane.

        • Tortured Bear fan

hahahaha If can find someone better than him of course kick him, but he tries at least

          • MB30SD

not everyone gets a fucking trophy just for playing my man… this is the NFL not 6 yr old soccer league.

        • Tortured Bear fan

I think with a better FS he could improve, my opinion.

          • Johnnywad

Maybe. But I’m past hoping a UDFA will improve with better players around him. I want a bad ass DB that QBs are afraid to throw at. And then two more to go with him.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Luckily for the Bears, it’s supposed to be a deep CB class.

Perhaps in retrospect throwing $ at Josh Norman would’ve been the right thing to do, but I can understand POX hesitating to throw major cash on a “1 yr wonder”.

Still, it’s rare CBs of his caliber hit the market.

          • willbest

Norman has been somewhat pedestrian outside of Barkley making him look good. But I guess it wouldn’t be a Bears v. Redskins game without a Bear’s QB throwing multiple picks to a Skins CB.

      • AlbertInTucson

I think the question may be “Does Fuller want to play, ANYWHERE? “.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Both LeBlanc and Callahan are nothing more than nickles.
We need a true #1CB, another one (to eventually replace Porter), a #1FS/SS

And yes, another NT (Goldman too inj prone) And DE (insurance for Bullard or HIcks inj).

And ILB if we don’t think Kwiak is a starter, or if Trevathan may never be the same.

Other than that, we’re good on D.

      paywall

    • CanadaBear

Some of those questions were bogus. No way Fuller is a bigger bust than CD. Gonna be a helluva off season. Will be interesting to see how the pay ratchets up for the in demand guys.

      • willbest

Fuller won us a game against San Fran. CD gave us the opportunity to win the division if the defenders would have just picked up the fucking ball.

So no, CD is not a bigger bust than Fuller.

        • BerwynBomber

CD arguably made the single biggest play by a Bear in decades. But it was a bit of a freak thing. Fuller, IMV, has been the better asset.

          • willbest

If I could trade my first round pick to bench Aaron Rodgers for 6 games a year, I would probably do it every year.

          • BerwynBomber

            LOL. Valid point …

          • MB30SD

As long as 2 of the 6 were against us

        • CanadaBear

Doesn’t bother me at all if CD gets a ring. Fuller has had multiple good games. CD had one.

          • willbest

That seems like liberal use of the word multiple. We spent most of last year calling him neckbrace.

          • CanadaBear

Got some picks and was involved in some TO’s. Plus a few passes defended. CD had one good game. He was awful in Chicago and i doubt he’s all that in NE.

          • MB30SD

Agree with that; it’s overdone for sure. But I still thought it moderately interesting.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

That scissors route and throw impresses. I don’t recall the last time the Bears have done one that deep for a TD. And that throw that stuck to Alshon’s helmet right up the seam was excellent as well.

But then Barkley made horrible decisions (throwing it into triple coverage. Floating it instead of just throwing it away, etc).

One of the tendencies of Barkley that I noticed is that he seems to like throwing it into the middle of the field.

Maybe I’m just remembering wrong, but I don’t recall too many throws to the sidelines (outs, fades, short scissors, even screens or dumpoffs…)

The book on him might be to cheat towards the middle.

      • SC Dave

Presumably, Loggains and Barkley will see that in the films too.

The thing I try to keep in mind is that for all practical purposes this is essentially Barkley’s rookie year.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Last week was his first truly horrible game vs a soft D.

Looked like once the Bears got behind, Barkley started pressing too much.

But he also had another game where he was avg at best.

Yes, in some ways this is his rook yr (and Birdcages’), but that could also go the other way.

Barkley can improve, but Ds can also attack weaknesses, essentially just making him another Orton, or worse.

      A very tough question.

Right up there with who the Bears should draft with their number 1.

A call you do NOT want to mess up.

  • Wobbly Pop

The writer said ” has performed well overall in 2016 ” LOL ! Well the stats as of week 9 showed him as the 43rd best tackle playing in a 32 team league ! heck even Massie who everyone hates and thought was worse shows up as the 39th rated tackle ! Oh and before anyone even thinks Leno improve and Massis got worse as the season went along it would be wrong as leno was on a steady decline and Massie took a small up tick oddly enough ! Oh and where are say the Packers and Lions rated ? Packers have 2 guys in top 6 and Lions have # 13 and a rookie Decker at # 23 ! Still think we need to ignore the tackles come draft time as a top priority ?

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

43rd best OT according to whom? PFF?

Good drafting is also about positional value.

For instance, we can almost certainly draft Fournette, perhaps the best overall player in the draft, but already have Howard (while HB is no longer a high priority for teams in general).

LTs are def worth more, but many from recent drafts have been BUSTS.

Leno/Massie has been servicable, esp compared to other positions of need like CB, S, DE, heck, even WR.

And let’s not forget how Leno SUCKED on the right side, so Bears would essentially be using Leno as a swing.

I guess if there’s an Orlando Pace next draft, then yeah, but we have bigger needs than OT (and Long can play RT in a pinch as well).

      • AlbertInTucson

NFL ready tackles in the college ranks are almost an endangered species.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

I think what’s happening more and more is that there aren’t those 4 yr starting LTs anymore.

Now, it seems like they’re all converted somethings (Bball players, TEs) or college starts them off at RT (like the NFL) then they get switched to LT maybe they’re junior year.

Also, those read-options, spread, etc Os might handicap them further.

Sure, those type of Os might make them have cardio, but when was the last powerhouse LT the Ducks produced (ironically, maybe Long)?

I think the NFL logic underestimated the last factor. Teams figured they get a 6’6 long-limbed athlete to mold, but like the infamous “track star, not football player” dichotomy, that has been rather disastrous

          • AlbertInTucson

            I buy the “Read/Option” theory.

      • Wobbly Pop

Ethan Young Football data analysis. Interior offensive line scout did the rating of all these guys based on his film reading and analysis of that film ! I have no idea what PFF ratings were on these guys . As for Leno and Massie being serviceable … let me pose 2 questions would not an O line setup with top level talent across the board like Dallas that can both run block and pass protect be better in both run and pass situations than a front featuring Leno and Massie ? And do really think a line like Dallas has would allow 3 of it’s QB’s to get injured behind it ? ( Shaw , Cutler , and Hoyer ) So keeping your most valuable asset protected and safe to play and pass as well as make for a great run game is not the most important need on a team ? And serviceable then works ? Serviceable is also Hoyer but would you settle for him too ? I want the best to protect my top guy so he can then become and stay the best he can be and not end up on IR like 3 other QB’s we have sitting there now ! Not saying ignore other needs at all just ranking this need as top one due to who he has to protect and block for !

        • Huge Bears Penis

yeah Dallas line only let 2 QBs get injured. Romo and Moore. Oline evaluation is so subjective, because no one looking from the outside knows exactly what the blocking scheme that was called. As long as your Oline guys aren’t getting mentioned by the announcers then there is a good chance they are doing their job. Both Massie and Leno are serviceable,

          • Wobbly Pop

I am not sure if you missed a bank of calls or games or what but Leno and Massie VS Denver ? VS Phili ? VS Dallas ? Peppers play sound familiar ? Leno VS Washington ? Massie holding , Leno hands to the face , leno offsides , Leno beaten badly , massie looked like he was in mud , leno holding , Leno tripping yes tripping vs Phili ! And that is just a few of the hits ! Serviceable sure but for which team ?

          • Huge Bears Penis

nope did not miss any games. I did not say they were great, I said they were serviceable. Leno was a 7th round pick in only his 3rd year and has shown improvement each year. Massie is a place holder, not great by any means but does his job better than we have had in the past. Could they be upgrade? Definitely. Is it the highest priority for the team? Absolutely NOT. All OLinemen hold, all Olinemen jump offsides or put hands to the face and all Olinemen get beat. Even the great ones. As far as yards is concerned the offense has been pretty good despite the penalties on the Oline, and that is with a bunch of 4th string WRs. If there is a draft pick that is a clear upgrade by all means draft him, but I don’t see that happening in the first 3 rounds.

My problem is that evaluating linemen is very subjective. These evaluators make assumptions on what they think should have happened on each play which might not be the case, or they don’t take into account the play of the QB. Evaluators will try to manage the QB variable but it is not exact. Then fans take their evaluations almost as the word of God.

          • Wobbly Pop

Well ok then i guess all i could do was bake the cake ! If it don’t get eaten i am not going to bang my head against the wall since i never asked who here prefers jello or pudding ! But a quick not … Leno actually has graded worse than Massie this year and has gone down in his grading this year so not 3 years of upwards trend ! Food for thought .

          • Huge Bears Penis

We lost 3 starting linemen for various amounts of time this year. One of the key elements every OLine guy will tell you is the need for familiarity and continuity. That is something this line has not gotten this year. From the first game, they came in with a new RG and C. The first couple weeks did not look good. They started to gel and then Long is battling injury for weeks and finally IR’d. That is going to affect Massie. Sitton was hurt for several weeks, which does not help out Leno. We are also now on our 3rd C for the year, that does not help anyone on the line. Injuries happen but it is not often teams have to deal with that many injuries on the Oline. Yet our running attack is pretty good, and whoever is the QB that week for the most part seems to have enough time when passing.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd IplayHard2!(Butch)

Is there a Tyrone Smith available in this draft?

(And it took him a little while to round into form too)

It’s way too early to evaluate who the best prospects even are, but if given the choice, all other things being equal, I would much prefer a playmaking CB/FS or even DE over OT

We just CAN NOT go into next season with an old as Porter and NO ONE else in the secondary.

As Samurai said, can’t do it.

I can live with Leno/Massie, esp if we have a Hoyer getting rid of the ball at 70% clip while minimizing sacks and dumb ass TOs

Those types of QBs can elevate an Oline.

          • Wobbly Pop

I can see trying to change your views will not work nor yours will change mine as i see Hoyer as one of those serviceable players guys keep talking about here ! Hoyer is like tits on a bull they look good but you get no milk ! Trouble is from my perspective is serviceable is = to avg at best and nowhere at worst which is exactly where the Bears have been for decades now ! Guys like Ditka , Lombardi and others always said you build from the lines out if you want to be a success ! Somehow we have gotten far away from that simple fact and never been successful at any sustained level ever since ! To reiterate i never said do not look for a CB , S , Edge , etc in FA or draft as those holes need filling but as any coach , draft guru , or GM and they will tell you the 3 most important players on the field are QB , LT and edge rusher ! Now days they are stating to include RT as 4th followed by CB !

    • BerwynBomber

Meh. GB’s line is often overrated, and last year they were the worst in the division. My theory is that Rodgers does so much dancing/extending, and opposing DCs often drop max in coverage, that analysts immediately start waxing about the incredible Cheese protection.

DET did invest in their OL, which had been horrible, and they are apparently improved.

But the only truly awful OL this year in the NFCN is MIN. The Bears, IMV, has looked as good as the Cheese’s. DET’s? Haven’t seen them enough. MIN? Butt ugly.

And as Butch says below, we have much more pressing needs than OT. Yeah, if the can’t miss guy is there, take him. But Leno and Massie have not been god awful.

      • AlbertInTucson

There is no such thing as “Max Coverage” when he creates SO much time.

Free rushers have got to stop coming at him out of control and just giving him the edge.

Looks like his hammy/calf issues are history, based on last Saturday.

        • BerwynBomber

“There is no such thing as “Max Coverage” when he creates SO much time.”

Yeah, he does that better than anyone with his footwork. Only guy close to him is Wilson on that front.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Frustrating.

Got to, grudgingly, give the guy his due.

He makes his line look better than it is.

Some guys have that pocket awareness.

            Some just don’t.

I have liked Barkley’s but, his throwing decisions last week were horrifyingly reminiscent of Cutler at his very worst.

The one where he sailed it over a wide open Jeffrey was particularly galling.

I am rooting for him to bounce back.

      • Wobbly Pop

At 1st i tended to agree with you on GB’s line but then i seen someone ask the scout who wrote the ratings what he had done to set the rankings . His response was that he looked at every single play then factored in Rodgers and what he does differently than other QB’s ! He stated there is a set of variables for all QB’s taken into account not just for QB grades but for line grades overall and going down to singular players ! The grades are undated a couple of times though out the season . MN’s tackles you are correct on as they are some of the leagues worst but our play has shown if graphed Massie is the guy improving after week 5 and Leno taking a bigger slide south this season ! Leno actually has taken a secondary slide again here late in the season as well . So oddly when folks were saying Leno was the better of the 2 and we should rid ourselves of Massie … It seems the opposite is now true more so since Leno is sliding and at a higher profile position !

  • BerwynBomber

A couple of Score guys — Bernstein and Zaidman — doubled down today on Mulligan’s reporting about the Fox/Fangio riff. The story is that nothing has been decided and that front office wants to see it work, but that Fox/Fangio were never an ideal fit — Zaidman likened it to the Zimmer/Turner situation in MIN earlier in the year.

    Anyway, TBD.

    • AlbertInTucson

That’s ok though, after Bears start 1-4, then Ginny can dump him and throw bears a Fangio bone.
