(A Brief Note on How to Save the Possibly-Struggling NFL)

| October 7th, 2016

Here’s how you solve the issues with the lack of young talent and depth on rosters across the NFL.

Step 1. Create an 8-team developmental league. That’s all you need. Each of the 8 teams is associated specifically with a division. So the NFC North would have their own developmental team comprised of an equal number of players from each of the four teams.

Step 2. Build a coaching staff selected by the four teams, with one head coach overseeing the program. (Think Marty Schottenheimer or Jim Fassel or Mike Shanahan) This will also enable young guys on coaching staffs to get hands-on experience calling plays, coaching a position group full-time…etc.

Step 3. Play the games on Wednesday. Wednesday is a dead zone for football information and these games will draw an audience. Will it rival the actual league? No.

Step 4. Each team’s developmental QB gets a start on a rotating basis. The results of these games are not particularly important but getting young quarterbacks in-game action is pivotal. And you don’t want them to be changing during the course of a game.

Step 5. Allow team-less veteran players to take part. I mean, it can only help the development of the younger guys to have a veteran presence in these practices and on these fields.

Step 6. Have the developmental league in late October/early November and create some roster spots from promotion to the big show. This would dramatically increase fan interest. Imagine watching these games knowing a few of the guys are definitely making the Sunday roster.

    woohoo 1st.

  • I don’t know if the 8 team thing will work. Will GMs and coaches want other team’s people in charge of their player’s playing time? They’d have to tweak it somehow but it’s got some legs.

GP’s Six Steps to bringing back the NFL:

    1. Bring back the Honey Bears.
    2. The RAMS Cheerleader outfits should go from this:

    http://cdn.fansided.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/54/files/2012/10/6698950.jpg

    to this:

    http://tinyurl.com/gmjk7dq

    It *is* LA, after all.

    3. Remove Joe Buck. The guy lost his voice because his hairplugs were too tight. Enough said.

    4. Troy Aikman, Aaron Rodgers and Steve Young need to have a LGBT event, to bring more butch lesbians into the fold. They can put a Polo shirt on Matthew Stafford and have him sing with the Indigo Girls.

    5. NFL talk shows with call-outs need to include the phone ringing and initial awkward pleasantry exchanges and start segments with Bongo drums. This Hughesification of the program will go a long way in boosting ratings.

    6. Remove the fair catch and make touchbacks start at the 40. Abolish the kickoff. Now you need a guy to stand on the 50 yard line and THROW the ball down the field and it must travel 25 yards and is a live ball as soon as it hits the ground regardless if the other team touched it or not.

    • willbest

Has it ever been the case where the forward pass is a live ball? That might be interesting to watch.

      • Freddy G.P. Soft

Wouldn’t it though? Opposing team had to line up behind the 40, guy picks the ball up and it’s live. They could rush him from 10 yards out, or set up a blocking line. The ball could be lofted high or it could be put on a rope.

All kinds of fun shit would happen.

    • #6 would be awesome.

      Ergo, it would never happen.

  • Also, Jeff on the Weekend Show, plzzzz find someone else to interview.

AD might be a decent writer and twitter follow, but he’s a terrible interview. Had the personality of a siberian turnip.

Of course, Jahns is first choice, but if not, Rev or Your Boy Roy would also be preferable to hearing paint dry.

            Maybe.

    • MB30SD

that’s fucked up dude. He reads us. Damn, that was harsh.

      (turnips gots feelings too yo)

  • Here’s my plan to save the NFL.

    1. FIGURE OUT WHAT A FUCKING CATCH IS!

This shouldn’t be like a metapysical debate as to whether or not time can cease.

It’s a catch, for fucks sake.

Possession, two feet down, maybe 2-3 seconds or something. Billion dollar industry, figure it out.

    2. REVIEW EVERYTHING.

Simple. Being able to review offsides, unnecessary roughness, hitting a “defenseless” receiver, PI, would make games like 10X more viewable right there.

    3. Somehow, less commercials.

Cant they do like soccer, and give the right for an entire game to like 2-3 sponsors?

Doubt this will happen, but be nice to streamline it a bit.

    • willbest

Reviewing slows the game down a lot and would increase the commercials.

A pretty good sensor net on the players might work. Helmet to helmet, hands to the face/facemask, ball spot, forward/lateral pass, intentional grounding, holding, OPI/DPI, delay of game, false starts, encroachment, away from the play or affects action, uncatchable, etc. Hell it could even do taunting and clock management.

Refs on the field would be needed to prevent fights, and place the ball right and mop up a handful of bubble cases.

    • Huge Bears Penis

Here is an idea – Let everyone get the NFL Sunday Ticket instead of just Direct TV customers.

      • That’ll NEVER happen as long as DirectTV throws their wallet at the NFL for the exclusive rights.

I seriously believe the ONLY reason ppl even get DirectTV is for the SUN ticket.

That’s the only reason my buds got it.

But on a programming note, move MNF BACK to the big networks.

It was an american institution for like 50 years.

It’s like moving MASH or Johhny Carson to cable or something (when they ran live). Should be illegal .

      • Governerd

I think the NFL is missing the big picture and focusing too hard on the immediate payday with their DirectTV deal. I wish every game were available on a ppv basis for somewhere in the 10-20$ range per game ($25 is roughly what I would spend at a sports bar to watch, I need to make it cheaper than that). Without doing any marketing research or any homework on it whatsoever, I predict they could print their own money that way.

        • willbest

I been saying they need to do that with Theatrical release movies. It costs me $60-70 to go to the movies with my wife between the concessions and the baby sitting. I would totally pony up $50 for a first run showing, and probably $100 for a Disney/Pixar movie where the kids invite their friends over and the parents sit outside drinking and talking.

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

Eye got your solution to the NFL’s decline right here Jeff? Feel me?

Get politics and social engineering the fuck outta the sport! You feel me brah?

    It’s that simple.

    • willbest

I been arguing about that. TV viewership is down about as much as the NFL is so far. The its the presidential season does have some merit and is testable come mid nov. Then again College viewership is said to be holding steady from last season. But then the college playoffs were just added and now schools are setting up non conference opponents that matter which is no doubt driving interest.

    • BearDown100393

A lot of these games are uhh…… boring.

  • willbest

Looks like the Vikings are on their way to losing another tackle.

    • Wow. See. I don’t think we’re an injury anomaly.

I think the key to beating them is taking away Rudolph and/or Diggs, and hitting China Doll Bradford.

A smart team will figure this out sooner rather than later.

      • willbest

It feels like it because you don’t give a shit about the health of the players on other teams (well as long as it isn’t Johnny Knox or Bridgewater bad)

      • MB30SD

too bad we’re not a smart team

        • Usually. But sometimes we are.

Fangio figured out that if you take the deep ball away from Stafford, it’ll castrate him.

He only rushed four, and on 3rd downs, often only three.

Didn’t get much pressure, but it seemed to completely take Fat Lesbo out of his groove.

Freeman has been MUCH better in coverage, and while Floyd can’t rush, he can cover, so I think they can handle Rudolph.

Put a S over the top to help out with Diggs.

Then all we have to worry about is their run-game, but considering we’re pretty stout with vs run, and the Vikes makeshift Oline, think we can keep them in check.

Our O-vs-VikeD is a whooole nother matter though.

        Is he even human?

  • I haven’t seen too much of Beniwerke. But wasn’t he good outside of last week? Even Peanut had a bad day against Steve Smith. Should we kick the tires on this dude?

    Panthers waived CB Bene Benwikere.

This is the fallout from Benwikere being burnt to a crisp by Julio Jones last week. Jones hung a 12-300-1 line on the Panthers, and Pro Football Focus charged Benwikere with 8-228-1 of it. It’s a surprising move, as it was just one bad game, but GM Dave Gettleman has moved on to wanting big, tall corners on the outside. Benwikere was solid Weeks 1-3 and had strong 2014 and 2015 seasons. More than one team will likely put in a waiver claim on Benwikere. – Roto

    • willbest

Julio makes a lot of people look bad, and Matty is having a Madden year. I doubt it was just this game that did him in. Panthers aren’t exactly dominant up front like they were last year, and they are bottom of the league in points allowed.

      • The only two questions I would have

        1. Is he a system fit?

        The Panther’s run a lot of cover-2/3

        2. How much would he cost?

There’s another possibility. If Chico loves his big CBs, maybe we can send him Fuller for a pick or two.

Fuller is big and originally drafted for a Chico-ish D.

Can we even trade players on IR?

  • Sauron’s right eyeball

The NFL needs to implement what I will refer to as a throwdown rule. Each team team gets one throw down per game on any penalty of their choosing. When the official rules inconclusive evidence on a challenge or its a bullshit call the challenging team gets the call reversed.

Something needs to be put in place to check these game officials bullshittyness.

Any ref that loses 3 throw down challenges in a season, gets suspended from the NFL until a governing body of player reps can review the officials flags thrown over the course of the season.

Put the burden on the refs to get it right.

    • BearDown100393

No officials. No flags. No rules. No timeouts. Just a running clock. That will be even more exciting.

      • Sauron’s right eyeball

Dude, that’s what I’m talking about. If a ref gets it wrong, a player gets to knock him the fuck out.

“Step 1. Create an 8-team developmental league.”

Kind of “The Return Of NFL Europe” but I’m not saying that’s a bad thing.

If the NBA can afford to completely subsidize things like their D-League AND the WNBA (Where No Body Attends) the NFL can surely afford a developmental league.

    • willbest

Does the NBA really piss away money on WNBA? I know it would be a tax write off, but I can’t imagine they would do that without some sort of additional government subsidy.

      • BerwynBomber

They cover the WNBA via NBA national TV contracts. Hence, ESPN/ABC is obligated to televise WNBA games if they wish to televise NBA games. So I assume the NBA sets aside a small chunk of the TV contracts each year to cover WNBA liabilities.

That is basically how the WNBA stays afloat.

I thought it was donations from Billie Jean King.

      Its better than golf.

  • BerwynBomber

Well, if we are dreaming, eliminate all D-1 college football athletic scholarships and have the NFL build out a robust minor league system in which the kids would get paid to play right out of high school. Maybe, as with baseball, you could have three different levels to accommodate the # of the D-1 kids. Play Saturdays, televise, have championships, the whole nine yards.

    • BearDown100393

Or a few steps further. Roger Goodell will buy your unborn child. At time of birth, that child becomes property of the NFL. The child will be trained exclusively for professional football. Leagues for various age groups and talent will be exclusive NFL operated and owned. ESPN will carry a special channel for football followers to watch their childhood development akin The Truman Show. This is a pure ratings bonanza. It takes fantasy football to the next level.

He walks out of 430 N Michigan, and then somehow walks south across the Michigan bridge and then somehow hops the train at the State/Lake stop, southbound, then gets out and ends up in Edgewater.

    • willbest

Why doesn’t that make sense? 430 N Michigan is north of the bridge, you would travel south across the bridge to get to the El. I don’t know how the trains ran 40 years ago, but the Purple line would head south around the loop before heading back North. It runs express From Belmont until Howard though, so he would need to transfer to the Red line at that point.

Of course the real question is why not just go to the closer grand redline subway entrance avoiding the trip around the loop and the need to transfer altogether, and the answer to that is because it doesn’t show off the city as well.

You would walk out of the 400 north block of Michigan and grab the train and State and Lake? For your commute home at night?

        • willbest

I would if I didn’t want to go onto the subway for some reason. Also, if you want a seat on the train you would get on just after it enters the loop dropping off the commuters going to the theater district for the evening (take the purple line as he appears to be doing). If he caught the brown line which travels the loop the other direction, everybody from downtown would have piled onto the train by then and it would be crowded since it would be on its way out of the loop after the next stop.

That all assumes its functioned the same way for the last 40 years.

  • Doc Nitty

Cool idea, Jefe. One problem with that. In particular, your bullet #4. My kids are playing youth football. Youngest is on the 2nd/3rd grade team and oldest is on the 4th grade team. Both full pads tackle football. What sickens me is even at the 2nd/3rd level, the coaches play the best players both ways while a great many kids watch from the sidelines and get the minimum six plays of game action every game. Even for 7/8 year olds, coaches seem to care only about winning. Why they can’t see that giving them all game action now will create better players later is beyond me, it’s axiomatic. Not only that, but most kids who get little to no playing time will likely not go out for the team next year. So how are kids going to develop their talent? They won’t. Not at the cost of winning meaningless pee-wee football games. So if they can’t do it at that level, do you really think there’s a snowballs chance in hell they’ll do it with semi-pro players? Hell no. It’s a pipe dream. Though it really should not be.

By the way, my youngest plays nearly every snap, so I’m not bitching from my perspective. I just feel the pains of the other dads and kids. Also of note, my youngest got voted team-captain yesterday. Goddamn am I proud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Huge Bears Penis

i see your point with bullet #4, however the teams would be forced barring injury to play a different QB each game in its entirety, therefore they would still need to be coached up in order to win. Where as, your pee wee leagues are requiring only 6 plays as a minimum, which sounds like an awful rule.

      BTW Congrats!

  • Johnnywad

    I’m utterly confused here.

For starters, I must have a completely different definition for the word “struggling”.

Additionally, every kid that’s any damn good at football, already plays. And they play lots of it. They eat, sleep and breath football year round at major university programs that churn out beastly, talented players.

So if there is a supposed shortage of young, talented players, how are we filling out the teams in this developmental league? Are we closing down the major college programs in this scenario?

I’m lost on what we’re looking for here. There will never be a stable full of players just ready to step up and fill in when starters go down that won’t show weaknesses by comparison. The nature of competition insures that. No matter what you do to “develop” players, it’s going to look somewhat like it does now. The guys that start and shine, they’re the best in the world at what they do. You can’t just replace that by shaping some new type of minor league.

The bar is just set unreasonably high. We’re currently watching teams, many of us think are bad, that would destroy champions from 20 years ago. They’re bigger, stronger, faster, and far more sophisticated.

The NFL is going to be just fine.

    • I don’t think the NCAA must be scrapped in order for a developmental league to emerge.

For instance, there used to be NFL Europe, which I think was resembled the NFL in rules and such.

I could easily envision a good developmental league based on that model.

It’ll replace Canadian football, I’m guessing, so all those guys will participate in this new developmental league cuz it’s closer to playing in the NFL.

All teams carry about 8 PS guys, so those guys might be eligible.

FAs who haven’t signed but want to keep in shape or show off (dudes like Carlos Williams)

Or maybe even has-beens that still want in, like Tebus

I think that could easily fill out a decent league.

      • Johnnywad

But if the point is “There aren’t enough good players.”, where are these other players going to come from that will somehow be better than the ones we have? The CFL and NFL Europe, are/were terrible. 8 teams is something like 500 players depending on roster size, practice bodies, etc.

I just don’t get how this is going to be better than having the kids good enough to squeak into a roster practicing against the best. Unless you’re taking all of the college all stars and forming the league with them. That will never happen.

        • It’s a bit of circular reasoning.

I think Jeff is arguing that there aren’t enough good players NOW cuz there’s no proper developmental league, that a developmental league will help to shape “good players”, at least more than NO developmental league, or the CFL.

Naturally, the counter argument is that it might cause more injuries, but seeing as those guys woudn’t be in the NFl most likely anyways, might not matter.

And if this developmental league does happen, then I would suggest we get their “all stars” to play in the Pro Bowl and replace whatever we have now.

          • Johnnywad

Maybe they can resurrect the XFL. Didn’t Rasheed Davis come out of that league?

          • Kurt Warner came out of NFL europe, and he swears it made him who he was.

            A few others too.

Then again, Moon came from the Canadian league, so who knows?

          • Huge Bears Penis

Warner came from the Arena League.

          • Huge Bears Penis

my bad he spent one season in NFL Europe

          • In 1998, Warner was finally signed by an NFL franchise, the St. Louis Rams, and was allocated to NFL Europe’s Amsterdam Admirals, where he would lead the league in touchdowns and passing yards.[23] His backup at the time was future Carolina Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme, another famous rags-to-riches quarterback story – Wiki

          • MB30SD

            HeHateMe

    • willbest

Well the bigger, stronger, and faster part leads to more injuries, and then you are left not with the best on best, but who still has their best players, and which coaches can exploit the weaknesses the other team has.

And that is why I think the goal should be on reducing the injuries. That flexible football helmet looks promising to reduce concussions because it increases stopping distance, But also a human frame isn’t meant to have 300 pounds on it. So I think a weight cap of say 280 for people that put their hands in the dirt, and 240 for everybody else might work.

Of course the place to do that sort of test would be in the minor leagues to see if you can reduce injury without making the game suck.

      • Johnnywad

It’s not just heavy players injuring themselves. It might even be skewed more toward the middle of the road guys. CB, S, QB, RB, etc seem to be just as injured as Tackles and Guards.

      • The weight cap would be an interesting experiment, might even link it with height (for instance, a 6’6 guy like Floyd who doesn’t play with his hand in the dirt could easily carry 260).

I would be all for it. Maybe less stress on ACL/MCLs etc

      • AlbertInTucson

that is the biggest load of crap i have ever heard. Indy had the cap space to keep freeman if they wanted to. Other teams have similar cap hits from their QB position. Luck’s cap number (currently around 11%) does not start to get ridiculous until 2018, and even then with the Cap increases that are occurring his portion of the cap is not going to be crushing. Just like the Bears, if they had drafted better in the last 4-5 years or found better value in FA it would not be an issue. Grigson is just giving poor excuses, and should be fired immediately for doing so. Grigsons issue is poor FA signings and bad drafts.

Love your Hillary the sky is falling BS and Trump’s issues are just a lack of being PC. Un-huh.

    • AlbertInTucson

And longer ago than that, Hillary was in the White House and tacetly condoning “crude” with her accused rapist husband, Bill.

But trying to stop it is impossible …

Lost power for a few hours. Winds sustained at around 60mph right now. Surfside Beach, where I am has gotten about 9 inches of rain so far, looking like 5-10 more possible.
Everything is wet, everything is bent, but so far so good in this neighborhood.
I’m not sure if the national news is talking about the Surfside Pier being broken up – but if you follow that road west for about 5 minutes, thats right where I am.

    • EnderWiggin

Thanks for the well wishes guys. Any word from SCDave? There are parts inland that are getting hammered quite hard.

Dave is currently cuddled up with a rain poncho, an old canoe, a 12 pack of awesome craft beer, an emergency radio that runs by cranking it and a life-size poster of a nude annd glistening Chris Conte. Don’t ask me how he got it.

      Glad you’re OK. Best wishes.

  • Does anyone know Italian?

I can kinda make it out, but not entirely.

Was watching the Godfather, and wanted to know what Don Tommasino told Michael right before he relayed that Santino had been killed.

I think he said, ‘if I have learned one thing in life it’s that vendettas are stupid. stupid’

Tried googling it, but no dice.

If you wanna know which part, fast foward to 2:04

    • Sauron’s right eyeball

He said, “it’s all gonna be yours now kid”.

    • AlbertInTucson

After Apollonia greets him and he climbs out of his car…

Don T: “Young people don’t respect anything anymore.Times are changing for the worse. This place has become too dangerous for you. I want you to move to a villa near Syracuse, right now.”

      Michael: “What’s wrong?

Don T: “Bad news. From America. Your brother, Santino. They killed him.”

From my Godfather DVD, which subtitled that scene.

      • Thxs!

I guess I DIDN’T get the gist of it. I could’ve sworn he at least said “stupido” and “vendetta”

I used to own the trilogy (on DVD with subtitles) but I left them at a girl’s house, but then she got kicked out of the pad, and lost em (and a few others, like my Amadeus 🙁

If I talk to my sicilian friend, I’m gonna ask him to translate the whole movie for me lol

Sicilian is actually quite different from the rest of Italy since he told me that the Spanish and Muslims ruled it for some time, and arabic and spanish words mixed in with the “Italian”.

For instance, Sicilians use travagghiari for “work” (which is like Spanish “trabjar”) while the mainland uses “lavorare” (which seems closer to “labor”).

Anyhow, his enemies, they sleep with the fishes (and lots of fishes in Sicily!)

        • AlbertInTucson

Yeah, I have that trilogy set. The original, not the “restoration”. What you thought was “stupido” is actually “subito” which is “quickly” or “now”.

The set also has a DVD with extras including a lot of deleted scenes that they added in the Novel For TV version that NBC ran a couple of times
where they combine 1 & 2 in chronological order.

A scene that NEVER should have been cut in ANY case was the killing of traitorous bodyguard, Fabrizio.

          • AlbertInTucson

On film, they blow him up in his car outside of his New York pizza parlor. Poetic Justice for his killing Apollonia wi th a car bomb.

I like the book’s version much better.

One of Michael’s torpedoes walks in to the pizza parlor at closing shoots him after first explaining “We know who you are, Fabrizio and THIS is from Micahel Corleone”.

            Delicious.

          • Yeah, heard the book was killer, and many readers lamented that Luca didn’t have a more prominent role since he was a stone cold killer who threw his own baby girl in the fire, killed her prostitute mother, then tried to kill himself.

Supposedly, even the Godfather was uneasy around him, and Brando does a really good job in that one scene when they tell him Luca wants to pay his respect.

Brando, “uhhh. Is that really necessary?”

            haha. Brazi!

          • AlbertInTucson

The book fleshes out so many other characters from traitor, Paulie (“Paulie, that struzz. He sold out the Old Man. I don’t wanna see him no more. Understood?”), to button men Rocco and Neri as well as Luca Brasi.

Other fairly major sub-plots deal extensively with Godson, Johnny Fontane and Sonny’s mistress.

The book also kind of cuts the legs out from a major concept of Godfather II with regard to Michael’s wife Kay, trying to leave him and take the kids.

The book has an ENTIRELY different spin on Kay and their marriage.

Jeff’s attempt at fair and balanced? Lol

    • Johnnywad

I just heard the Trump audio. That’s what everybody is spun up about? As though this is surprising?

I can’t stand either candidate, but this means nothing. I would bet my mortgage, he says far worse than that on a daily basis. As do most of the regs on this blog. This just isn’t news.

Hell, Clinton was getting his dick sucked IN the Oval Office, WHILE he was President by women not named Hillary. Half of the country didn’t care and wanted him to stay in office.

      • willbest

Anything to distract from Hillary calling for open borders from Canada to Chile. Anything to distract from her saying it was never the intention to interfere with wall street but political anger dictated token change. Anything to distract from her campaign manager calling half the country illiterate.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Standard locker room guy talk.

According to ex secret service agents, Hillary is a complete, bitchy , foul mouth in private.

“Open Borders” is plenty enough reason to vote against her.

          • LBJ would make a sailor blush.

          • willbest

Navy Man John McCain who called his wife a cunt, has disavowed Trump. John McCain clearly suffers from dementia.

          • MB30SD

            She prolly is

        • MB30SD

Passed, half the country *is* illiterate (and they’re voting for trump… hee hee)

      • Agree, I’m no Trump fan, but somehow this matters.

The part about him grabbing pussies though – uhh…isn’t that illegal?

Even MB can’t get away with that!

        • Johnnywad

Not if they let him. Additionally, in my experience, anybody that talks that way, is full of shit. He, in particular, is full of shit.

        • MB30SD

Nah, not into taking what isn’t given to me… like to believe there’s no need for that… unless you’re a fat ugly psychopath cunt

      • Malice Halice

So what’s news? Fuck both of em but you gotta pick lesser evil. It’s about time we pick a complete fuck up for president. We passed do anyways so the next 4-8 years should be comical. Dis dude could be the first presidential porn we could ever see with his ways. I love his honesty. Hes like the richer version of Kanye West

      • Big Mike

Except Bill was qualified for his job. He was by most counts a good President. Did a lot of good. Trump on the other hand? C’mon. The guy’s a joke.

        • Johnnywad

Trump is a piece of shit. Hillary is a lying, powergrubbing bitch. I may skip that section of the ballot.

Bill is also a scumbag. As far as qualified goes, being the governor of Arkansas hardly qualifies one for the presidency. On strict terms of qualification, I’d take the leader of a multinational,multi-billion dollar business before I’d take the hillbilly governor of an inconsequential state.

At the end of the day, fuck all of it. They’re all a bunch of liars.

    • AlbertInTucson

Maybe Hillary DOESN’T suck, and that’s why Bill resorted to interns?
