NFL Draft Rounds 2 & 3 Open Thread

| May 1st, 2015

paceCan’t bring myself to sit on the couch and watch eleven hours of Mike Mayock making up phrases and misusing half the English language. So if you’d like to follow my thoughts over the course of rounds two and three, as always, you can do so by (a) checking out my Twitter on the right rail of this page or (b) following me on Twitter by CLICKING HERE

I’ll have a report on tonight’s selections posted late tonight/early AM.

Like a fat kid loves cake

    • Shady

Son of a… You SCOOPED me you bastage!

      • 505Bears

Haha, like Uncle Jessie as the vulture

  • Shady

First to say… Gregory, Collins, Collins, Goldman, Fisher, Kendricks or Phillips. There’s my top 7.

    • Shady

      PS. Go Hawkce.

      • 505Bears

Should be a good series. Hopefully Crawford hits a hot streak.

    • Doc Hamstring

Why not Perryman? He’d be a great choice–I can’t decide between him and Kendricks, and I like Kendricks a lot.

      • Shady

I like Perryman and McKiney too. I just think Kendricks’ character, leadership and his ability to cover in space is what separates him from the rest.

    • Scott W.

I’m going Petty, Collins, Kendricks, Phillips, Goldman. In no order of any kind.

  • La’el Collins had said he won’t sign a contract if drafted in the 4rth and beyond. Would rather re-enter the 2016 draft.
    So.
    1. He goes undrafted and becomes a UFDA in which he can ask for any amount of $$
    2. A team must gamble to draft a prego muderer in the 2nd-3rd
    3. He gets drafted beyond the 3rd, doesn’t sign, re-enters next draft in which case the team wastes a draft pick.

    • GPLDAN

      Prego murder marinara sauce.

      Just comes in blood red

      • Shady

        Really?

    • Doc Hamstring

He can’t do that. Whatever team drafts him retains his rights. He can’t take a mulligan if he doesn’t go high enough.

      • retains his rights in the next draft? I don’t think so. Though I’m not sure

        • Doc Hamstring

Retains his rights, period. Whichever team drafts a player, retains the rights to that player. I don’t know what the term is. It’s more than a year.

          Remember Bo Jackson?

OK, did a little research. The drafting team holds the rights to the player in perpetuity. Period. Collins doesn’t like where he’s drafted? He can go fuck himself.

          • “NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Collins and his camp have determined that if he’s not selected in the second or third round, he will refuse to sign a contract with an NFL club and resubmit his namefor the 2016 NFL Draft.

The CBA states that any player who does not sign with the team that drafts him can be selected by any team the following draft.”

            http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000489897/article/lael-collins-plans-to-enter-16-draft-if-not-picked-friday

          • Doc Hamstring

Hmm… the stuff I was looking up pre-dated the current CBA. But that would be a pretty big thing to change–a lot of power ownership would give up.

          • Doc Hamstring

I guarantee if he pulls that shit and fucks a team out of the draft pick, he won’t get drafted the next year, period. The owners won’t go for players having that sort of power–to screw a team out of a draft pick and then get a second shot at being picked higher.

          • I thought the same at first because I remember Elway threatening to simply play baseball if the Colts drafted him, but yes, that was before the current CBA.

This is really unprecedented, and will be interesting to track.

He’s basically warning teams not to draft them unless they want to waste a pick (after the 3rd).

It’d be funny if the very last pick in the 3rd is him (a supplemental?).

          • Irish Sweetness

Unless his last name is Manning or Elway, in which case he gets to go where he likes.

      • Scott W.

…and let’s face it, we aren’t talking about Eli Manning here. He has less than no sway.

      • Big Mike

He can. The CBA says if he sits out a year, he can be drafted all over again. (pretty sure on this)

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

Bo Jackson was drafted by TB said fuck that played baseball, the Raiders drafted him the next year.

          • Big Mike

Your wrong. That was an older CBA. You’re going to hate this, but here is the language from the current collective bargaining agreement.
            Here’s the link. https://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/collective-bargaining-agreement-2011-2020.pdf

But the upshot is, if he’s not signed he can be redrafted the next year.

Section 8. Subsequent Draft: A Club that, in a subsequent Draft, drafts a player who (a) was selected in an initial Draft, and (b) did not sign a contract with the NFL Club that drafted him or with any assignee Club during the signing period set forth in Sections 4 through 6 above, shall, during the period from the date of the subsequent Draft to the date of the Draft held the subsequent League Year, be the only NFL Club that may negotiate with or sign a Player Contract with such player. If such player has not signed a Player Contract within the period beginning on the date of the subsequent Draft and ending on the thirtieth day prior to the beginning of the regular season, the Club loses all rights to trade its exclusive negotiating rights to such player or any Player Contract that it signs with such player for the player’s initial League Year. After the Tuesday following the tenth week of the regular season, the player and the Club may sign a Player Contract only for future League Year(s), except as provided in Section 4(c) above. If the player has not signed a Player Contract by the day of the next annual College Draft following the subsequent Draft, the player immediately becomes an Undrafted Rookie, with the right
            20
to negotiate and sign a Player Contract with any Club, subject to the provisions of Ar-ticle 7, and any Club is then free to negotiate for and sign a Player Contract with such player, without any Draft Choice Compensation between Clubs or First Refusal Rights of any kind, or any signing period.

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

pretty sure we are in agreement. the player just needs to sit out the year and then can be redrafted the following year.

          • Big Mike

Actually I thought I was replying to Doc Hamstring

          • Huge Bear’s Penis

no worries, actually figured that out after i replied.

          • Doc Hamstring

TB forfeited their rights to Jackson. They could’ve held onto him.

  • Hmmmm…after watching some more McKinney tape, I can see why he dropped. While big, he doesn’t hit big. Lunges, grabs. Doesn’t seem to square up and hammer.
Lumbers about. Very stiff and perhaps a liability in coverage, esp man coverage.
Sometimes get’s caught up in garbage at his feet.

Kendrick’s tape is much more impressive, but he’s a midget light-heavy weight.

It’s going to be interesting to see which way this 2nd goes.

  • And Heeerree we gooo…

Butkus announcing our next HOF LB in CHI-Town!!!

    A gal can dream…

  • Making up for trades today already.

  • Big Mike

Damn, I want this for the Bears

    #Giants trade No. 40 (2nd), No. 108 (4th) and No. 245 (7th) to the #Titans for No. 33.

  • Big Mike

This is because there is 1st round value at the top of the 2nd round

  • God-dell needs to stop coming on stage. The boos are getting ridicules and spoiling the event.

    • Shady

It’s all part of the fun, plus he deserves it. I like the fact they’re giving the guests a loud cheer. Mike Alstott was a pain to play against, but I have all kinds of respect for the guy.

  • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

Landon Gone,Hope Davis, Nate and the other collins roll on

    • John Doe

Jasquiki Tartt is better if Bears want a Safety.

  • John Doe

Jalen Collins or P.J. Williams would be nice at #39.

  • Nooooooo. My boy Yeldon!!!
Damn, 3rd back taken. I’m a better scout than the scouts!

    • John Doe

      Tevin coleman…

      • NFL and NFP have Colemena, Ajayi, Duke Johnson and maybe a few others ahead of Yeldon.

Coleman won’t drop to the 3rd or 4rth. Damn.

  • John Doe

4-3 DE.. More good option for Bears..

    Matt MillerVerified account‏@nfldraftscout

Mario Edwards to the Raiders?! Wow that’s a good DL.

    • Irish Sweetness

The Jets DL is ridiculous, and with Cromartie/Revis? Brady will have kittens twice year.

  • FantuzPhysics

If Randy Gregory is still there, we would go with him no?

    • Big Mike

      no

    • John Doe

Word is he will go undrafted. Mental health issues.

      • FantuzPhysics

I’m just reading about that now. Wow. That is unfortunate.

    • Shady

I hope so, but probably not.

    • we didn’t trade Bmarsh away for nothing.

  • Big Mike

lael collins, goldman and jake fischer OT one of those three will be there

    • Big Mike

      Kendricks as well

      • FantuzPhysics

OT is my kind of pick. Build the trenches.

    • Fischer is a finesse OT. Does Gase like those?

      • Big Mike

I just saw he was one of the top rated players on the board.

  • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

    It seems Gregory is done…

    • Shady

      Feel bad for him.

      • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

don´t mix ganja with NFL when you are a rookie

        • Irish Sweetness

This should be painfully obvious to these guys, but we were all young once.

  • Big Mike

Hopefully the Skins choke. Then we’ve got our pick

  • Big Mike

Jets took a WR. Skins pick is in.

  • BillW

Biggys tweeted the Bears pick before it was announced yesterday.

  • BillW

    It’s goldman per biggsy

  • Big Mike
  • AlbertInTucson

    “DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
Mayweather is a disgusting human. There is no wiggle room on this. He is a repulsive, disgusting human being.”

    No argument.

Would love to see Manny beat him to a pulp but I doubt it will happen.

    • BearDown100393

Agree with AIT. Mayweather probably wins this one. No justice in boxing.

      • Irish Sweetness

        You never know.
I remember a bunch of us in a friend’s house – he’d bought the payperview Tyson-Holyfield fight. Tyson was like 18-1 on, we all had a round for the KO, but nobody took -any-other-result. He was a lock. I don’t think he won a single round.

        • BearDown100393

Anything can happen. Especially in Vegas.

  • BillW

    Butkus approves!

  • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

goldman is fine, not my pick but it wokrs

  • Shady

    NAILED IT.

    • Shady

      * Reserve the right to withdraw this comment at a later point in time.

  • FantuzPhysics

Another good body on the DL

  • BillW

    City of Broad Shoulders

    That’s a nickname I like

    • BillW

Except I think it’s city of BIG shoulders

  • FourFeathers

Love the pick. Pace is doing very well.

  • Goldman might be equal to Shelton. Told you guys a good NT would fall in our laps in the 2nd. That’s why I didn’t want Shelton at #7.

Butkus and Butch stamp of approval!

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

Sutton wouldn´t share your optimics with this pick

      • FourFeathers

        Sutton doesn’t fit a 3-4.

        • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

You are right, hope he can figure it out

      • haha. Sutton to Lovie for a 3rd!

I thought NTs Shelton, Brown, Phillips and Goldman were very close to each other (in that order).

        And Phillips is still available.

  • FourFeathers

Now let’s get best available S or OT in round 3

    • willbest

      preach it

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

      or the best Back aviable

  • willbest

I get the feeling the Bears are content with their current slate of pass rushers.

    • FourFeathers

Doubt it. Bears are rebuilding and we still need a ton of help. But Pace and Fox can’t get it all done in one offseason.

  • BillW

This is what a real draft looks like. Emery had one or two to be fair. This one feels like skill. Emery in hindsight like luck

    • willbest

hold up… they have to put on pads for 32-48 games first

      • BillW

Jeez. Let a guy try to shed his Eeyore image! (kidding. And happy)

        • BillW

I loved hearing butkus say he liked it

      • SC Dave

        Gawd, no shit

  • Wow, knew Beckham would tempt a team to trade up!

    • BerwynBomber

Titans traded down via the G-men, didn’t they?

    • AlbertInTucson

This kid has a problem with authority. Did you see his “rap” sheet?

      • Yeah, I would’nt have drafted him (even if we passed on WR in the first).
First yr GM, new coaching staff. Get guys who can ball without the other stuff. At least in the first 3 rds.

Wanna take a flier on a risk later, fine by me.

    • Irish Sweetness

6’5, 230+, the new Megatron. If he stays out of jail. Story of the NFL.

  • BillW

Hmmm. Butkus the only one to comment on the pick.

  • AlbertInTucson

    “DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
I buy my bagels from a guy named Eddie Goldman.”

Yup. Sounds like the bagel guy, your accountant, attorney or proctologist.

    Anything BUT an NFL DT.

  • EnderWiggin

Carolina moving up to take a TE is a mindblow. Don’t they have a ton of needs like us?

    • Trac

      Girly Thor is getting old.

      • Irish Sweetness

He’ll be looking for a payday – has to get his tits redone every ten years.

    • He’s a hybrid WR/TE. He’ll probably play a lil of both while Girly Thor is eased into the pasture.

However, I can’t believe Chico is ok with Cam getting killed behind that Oline

    • willbest

They also drafted a Will in the first round which made little sense considering they have a decent one of those already.

  • Nooooooo. McKinney!!!!
Told ya, Data that Kendricks wasn’t going to be the first ILB taken in the 2nd.

As a girl once told me, “It’s all about GIRTH.”

  • Very surprised the QBs are still on the board: Grayson, Petty, Hundley.

They SHOULD go in the 3rd and beyond, but I didn’t think teams would show this discipline. I guess teams only reach for QBs in the 1st.

    • Big Mike

This group of QBs simply isn’t that good

  • Trac

Solid trench player in Goldman. I like the approach in this draft so far. I gotta believe we draft a QB soon. This staff is doubling down on the future.

  • Fangio better know what the hell he’s doing at ILB. The rest of the ILBs have lots of question marks. If they find one in the rest of the draft, that’ll be a homerun.

    • Irish Sweetness

Like we know – can’t fix everything in a year. Maybe our first pick next year is for the best ILB? The second too.

  • FourFeathers

Really want an OT in the 3rd or a S. Should be good value.

  • FourFeathers

Can’t fill all the needs in one offseason. Bears were 5-11 for a reason.

  • We’ll be seeing a lot of Kendricks…in a Queen’s uni…

  • Shady

    Really? Son of a…

  • BillW

Surprised by a lot of the guys they have announcing picks. Alstott a great choice due to local connection. But a lot of these guys are not really stars in my opinion

  • RenoBear

Those damn Vikings are havin a helluva draft so far too

    • eh. they “win” every draft, and never do shit.
We’ll see. They lost to us, and we sucked balls last year.
However, getting AP back will be huge.

      • willbest

I don’t know he doesn’t seem to want to be in MN.

        • The GM is playing hard ball. Proclaiming he plays for them or no one. AP has no leverage.

          • Doc Hamstring

Jerrah will do the stupid thing and offer a boatload for AP. Payback for the Herschel Walker trade that built the Cowboys’ Super Bowl dynasty and crippled the Vikings for a decade.

          • willbest

Doesn’t he play for 15 million though?

          • $12.5, I think against the cap

    • willbest

They have drafted a 87 defensive players in the first 3 rounds in the last 3 years, give or take.

  • Doc Hamstring

    Fuck, Kendricks to the Vikings

    • Big Mike

He wasn’t going to last to the 3rd

      • Doc Hamstring

I know, but I’d rather the Vikings didn’t take him. I really like the guy, and now I can never cheer for him.

      • SC Dave

        🙁

  • Doc Hamstring

Perryman will be long gone by round 3. No help at ILB this year, because there’s a big dropoff once Perryman is gone.

    • willbest

I am okay with Jones. Don’t like Foster/Bostic playing next to him though.

      • Irish Sweetness

Somebody needs to call Sharpton. I’ll never forget him blowing up that blocker in the Atlanta backfield.

    • Dawson>Perryman IMO

      • I don’t really like Perryman either.

        • I love him against the run, but he can’t cover for shit. Bears have plenty of guys who can do that, though maybe not quite as well as Perryman against the run.

          • Doc Hamstring

ILB cover skills aren’t as important, given that in a 3-deep shell the ILBs have hook zones, which are easy.

          • Irish Sweetness

Exactly. Gregory can play inside and then just shoot forward.

      • Doc Hamstring

        Dawson ran a 4.93 40? Jeez.

        • That’s why he’s not drafted. That and his size. (and charcter)
Maybe he’s the Chris Borland of the draft?

          • Irish Sweetness

He’s the Burfict of the draft. Mad talent apparently. If I could draft two character-issue guys it would be Gregory and Dawson. Massive risk versus pro bowl talent for cheap.

  • Doc Hamstring

Unless we can still swing a deal to get Kendricks from Philly?

  • Fuck!!! Tartt gone.

    • willbest

Well other teams have to pick something

      • A lot of mocks had Tartt falling to the 3rd and beyond. Hub earlier today said McKinney could be there @ #71. Yeldon was seen as a 3rd-4rth rounder.

Man, I’m gonna have to just come up with my own board next year lol

        • Scott W.

Ok, THAT is funny shit right there.

          • Irish Sweetness

Butch’s board. Fuck this Mayock character.

          • Scott W.

Hell, it was funny because Butch does more research than 3 scouts combined.

    • Johnnywad

Fuck Tartts. Always delicious when properly toasted.

  • Minnesota is building a NASTY defense. Holy cow.

    • Doc Hamstring

And yet, without AP, their offense is pretty much shit.

      • willbest

I think Bridgewater is going to develop nicely. I wouldn’t be surprised if they find 10 wins this year.

        • Doc Hamstring

          Throwing to whom?

If AP doesn’t play, Bridgewater won’t develop as much, because Matt Asiata is not the answer.

    • Shady

They’re like the Jets of the NFC.

  • willbest

I would be seriously tempted to take Randy Gregory if he was there in the 3rd.

    • FantuzPhysics

UDFA…the writing is on the wall now

      • willbest

F that. Blow a 6th rounder on him if he is going to fall that far.

        • FantuzPhysics

          don’t disagree at all.

      • Doc Hamstring

Fuck UDFA. Then you have 32 teams competing. Spend the 6th-round pick on him to lock up his rights. How many 6th round picks make the roster? It’s not a big loss if he busts.

  • Did Gregory just say HE’s waiting for the right situation?

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

yes and that situation is any team that is willing to take the risk

      • Gregory doesn’t sound remorseful at all.
Shane Ray at least sounded genuine and manned up.
I don’t think I’ve heard Gregory actually take responsibility for his fall yet.

        • willbest

Probably because he is self medicating at which point he can put himself in the position of victim

        • Huge Bear’s Penis

he should have at least said ‘Hey at least i am not a suspect in a Murder!’

          • willbest

Didn’t the Falcons draft that guy?

        • Irish Sweetness

If he’s on the weed then he’s not going to be anyone’s bitch and appear on Ellen to say he’s sorry to the kids.

      • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

        that situation is a clinic

  • haha, the reporter ends it with “he’s got a smile on his face”. Would’ve been epic if she gave the toac sign.

    • FantuzPhysics

During that interview…you’d like to see him say that he realizes why he is dropping and it has been an eye opener…he now sees what is expected of him…that would have helped him out

  • willbest

I hope with all the defensive players coming off the board in round 2 that means there are some quality OTs available in 3

  • Some Safeties I heard some good things about that might be there for us in the 3rd (almost don’t want to mention them cuz everyone I mention gets drafted before us):

    FS Amos Adrian
    FS Holliman
    FS Prewitt
    SS Irbaheim Campbell

    • willbest

      Now you done did it.

    • Doc Hamstring

FS Derron Smith. Draws some comparisons to Mike Brown.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

        injured a lot?

        • Doc Hamstring

No, intelligent, versatile, physical, but “not tall enough”

  • Why does Mitch Morse (super hero, or porno name?) look like hes 45 yrs old?

  • BillW

Now we get a superstar. Happy to see him there – healthy!

  • Jim Kelly getting a standing ovation. Moment of the draft.
Panning to his hot daughter. 2nd moment of the draft.

  • Doc Hamstring

Perryman is gone, so ILB is no longer gonna happen this draft. I’m guessing FS in 3rd.

  • RenoBear

She is smokin hot… As I was watching, and they panned to her, I said ‘oh my Gawwwd ‘ under my breath… And my 5 year old son says ‘what daddy?’ I said you take notes son, that’s a stunningly beautiful woman

    • BillW

Who is the one who modified his Wikipedia entry. . It now says he resides in (city) with his wife Jill, and daughters Erin (the really hot one….

      • willbest

Is she dolled up particularly well because when I did an image search she is attractive but no dime.

        • BillW

I am not one to care about such things at my age but curiosity did get the best of me. I only saw the espn quick camera shot of two women who I assumed were related to him. Wondered if he had a really young wife or what. Saw pictures of the two girls and saw her singled out in the search (Google catches trends fast) and didn’t think she was extraordinary.

I guess it’s a good thing brent musburger isn’t here

  • willbest

Why are the Dolphins drafting D line. Don’t they have the most ridiculous D-line already?

    • Irish Sweetness

Is it 85 Bears ridiculous? See? People are trying …. Buffalo, Minny, NYJ, MIA ….

      • Johnnywad

Not exactly four clubs I’d like the Bears to emulate.

  • Melissa needs to simply pass the mic to his daughter and get off stage.
That being said, NFL Net isn’t stupid. Producer, “Get his daughter back on the camera!”

  • Bears aren’t the only ones who want to run the ball.
Lions drafted two OGs early, and now draft a RB to pair with Bell.

  • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

if Phillips pans out, who will run in Miami? not even cartels

    • willbest

You mean who will be able to run against them?

      • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

        yes, sorry

        • willbest

That is the key though. Make Tom Brady beat you with his arm.

  • Doc Hamstring

Detroit continues to draft like Matt Millen’s still in charge.

  • OT. TJ Clemmings, CB PJ Williams, OG AJ Canns…
IF Coleman is there in the 3rd, that might be too tempting to pass up

    • willbest

If they draft a guard in the 3rd I will be sad because that means they plan on playing Long at tackle.

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

PJ would be awesome, but Coleman…. would say bye-bye Forte.

  • Trac
  • FantuzPhysics

I know everyone hated Emery and Trestman, but the last two drafts were huge upgrades over Angelo’s regime. So far, we’re on a safe trajectory…and we have eliminated some of the poison in the locker room from the Lovie era

    • willbest

Emery wasn’t the horrible draft people make him out to be. He would still have his job today if he would have hired Arians over Trestmen.

      • FantuzPhysics

Yes I agree. He clearly had a plan. I still liked Trestman, but it was clear that no one was playing and there was no plan on how to fix the D.

  • Crazy part is history tells us a few of these 2nd-3rd rounders will be PBs and no one knows right now who those guys will be.

    • Doc Hamstring

      Mike Singletary, 2nd rounder. HoF.
      Joe Montana, 3rd rounder. HoF.

It’s not just PBers, but HoFers.

Hell, Alshon was 2nd round, and he went to the PB already.

      • Irish Sweetness

Hilgy was nominated for the hall, he was undrafted. Dent is in there, he was drafted in round 8.

  • OF COURSE the boys draft Gregory.
Gregory can play the first 10 games while Hardy is suspended, and Hardy can play the last 6 when Gregory is.

    • willbest

      lol

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

they are hoping he shares his weed with Hardy to mellow him out a little away from the facilities

    • FourFeathers

Gregory is a very unstable person who should be in mental treatment faculty and not a NFL facility. Wonder how long this kid actually lives.

      • Doc Hamstring

You’re saying that because he got busted for weed before the combine, and hasn’t sounded appropriately apologetic and regretful?

Or is there another reason you think he’s unstable?

        • BillW

There are hints it’s a lot more serious. And pft reported recently that in fact some think he has untreated mental health issues. Others speculate the weed is his way of dealing with it.

    • Irish Sweetness

And the Bengals do the Burfict thing on Paul Dawson! Love it

  • willbest

Lets see how the Packers counter.

  • Scott W.

So, are we in “whoever” mode now, after only 2 picks? Weak draft, it seems.

  • Shit, Marpet is gone. Dang. Didn’t thought a lot of these guys might slip to the 3rd.

  • WTF? lol I guess the Pack are gonna go with the 1-2-8

    • BerwynBomber

Cheese lost their first and third CB on their depth chart in the off-season, I believe.

  • BerwynBomber

Not sure about the Kittens selecting Abdullah in the second round. Didn’t seem a huge need. Also assume he was not the BPA at that point.

  • BerwynBomber

So do we go QB in the third? DC or NYJ might select one before us.

    • FantuzPhysics

Definitely looks like QB will be there. Brett Hundley maybe. WR, RB still on top of big board at si.com anyway

      • FantuzPhysics

CB or OL could be our pick

    • It might be good value here for them, although if HB Coleman is still available, he’d be BPA esp considering Forte’s on a contract year and nearly 30 with a shit ton of carries going back to college.

  • Well, there goes Canns. OG Tre’ Jackson, FS Prewitt?

  • BillW

Bears on the clock five minutes ago per biggs. TV is simply behind due to commercials

  • BillW

    Oregon center picked by bears.

    • willbest

Kind of surprised center would be BPA

      • BillW

Me too. But we need one

        • willbest

          Thought we signed one

          • BillW

            That’s right. Forgot

      • SC Dave

But we have talked about a new one for a couple of seasons now

    • SC Dave

Okay, so NOW I am starting to think they know what they are doing!

      52 starts at Oregon

      • willbest

I doubt he starts over Montgomery this year.

  • SC Dave

My timing has been eerie.. got to a tv twice to see the pick before the bears and then ours. And both times with sound muted!

    • BillW

      Picks beem made. Tv behind

      • BillW

        And now another commercial.

  • FantuzPhysics

    center. HRonnis Grassu.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      how do you pronounce that?

      • FantuzPhysics

        No idea. “Her-o-nis” “Gras-ooh”?

        • SC Dave

          Prollly hron isss

          But mercifully its muted here

        • Shady

          Romanian. Huh-RON-Us Grass-oo.

    • FantuzPhysics

si.com had a 3rd round grade on him, but they still have 2nd round graded players on their big board left

      • willbest

If the people doing the grading for si.com were that good they would be in an NFL front office making more money.

        • FantuzPhysics

lol. absolutely. I think this draft is good. We’re not drafting people based on possible talent or converting positions…this is a disciplined approach while addressing our needs

        • yes and no. You have to work your way up in the NFL, and the lower level jobs are lots of work and shit pay.

Matt Miller and Daniel Jeremiah both claim to have turned down multiple offers from teams for scouting positions because they require 200+ days on the road each year and pay <30k per year to start. F that.

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      oh crap he’s romanian also.

      • SC Dave

        Lol

      • willbest

The best weight lifters come from Eastern Europeans and Middle Easterners. So that is a good thing.

      • BillW

I hope he is mean and angry like – oh, some Romanian guy I’ve read.

    • Irish Sweetness

He looks like Russian Special Forces.

  • BillW

They are not keeping up on espn. Horrible. It’s only the third round. Glad bears are done

  • Viva

    “Who did the Bears pick?”
    “Grasu.”
    “God bless you.”
No, that’s who the Bears drafted.”
    Who?”
    “Grasu.”
    “God bless you.”

  • Big Mike
    • Big Mike

He’s a great choice. Top 1 or 2 centers in draft.

      • SC Dave

Excellent… like i wrote earlier, I’m starting to believe in the new front office

      • Irish Sweetness

Ah. He’s a leader on offense. His guys love him.

    • Who needs White?!

  • Shady

Ultimately time will tell, but it seems this draft is shaping up quite nicely.

    • BillW

I like it so far. Every pick makes sense and seems to fit. People can still say they should have picked so and so, but obviously there are other good players after the 7th pick in round.3.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

atleast we weren’t say ‘WTF!!!” or “WHO??” so far this draft

  • BillW

Just heard this is the second time in three years only 2 qbs taken in first 2 rounds.

Most important posistion. . Severe shortage of talent. . Rules favor offense to the point of almost punishing defense.

This is a real problem in my opinion as I’ve said a few times.

    • which is why nobody wants to move on from their QBs and the good ones are all getting old.

  • BillW

    Hawks 3 zip after 1

  • BillW

Totally unrelated grumpy old man post.

When will the madness stop? . Marshall Field’s is Macys. Sears Tower is Willis Tower. . Iconic restaurants close every year.

And now comes news that Victory Auto Wreckers has a new commercial.

  • FantuzPhysics

Any thoughts on who we may be looking at tomorrow?

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      hopefully football players

      • beninnorcal

        Maybe some LB’s

  • BillW

And with apologies for jinxing the Blackhawks by posting a first period score. (now tied with the Hawks looking shaken) I say goodnight

  • BerwynBomber

As much as Berman catches flak, Trey Wingo seems worse. Laughs at his own lame shit and doesn’t have a firm grasp of football history.

Generally like Dilfer — he has strong opinions if nothing else — but he is adding very little here.

  • “Cash, ass or Grassu, nobody rides for free!”

  • SC Dave

So, the Grasu thing has Kyle Long stamped all over it. I was wondering about that when Bill initially posted he was from Oregon…

    http://chicago.suntimes.com/bears-football/7/71/570323/bears-pick-oregon-center-hroniss-grasu-round-3

  • Butch report.

Grassu tape in a big game vs good D. Few things. He gets bull-rushed and jolted quite often (look at him at the Goaline). Needs to improve his strength. Seems nimble for his size, but a lil lost in space (which is odd since the Ducks like to play in space. )Hands need work – needs to develop more consistent punch. Doesn’t seem ultra aggressive or a “finisher”. Not sure how effective he’ll be at goaline/short yd downs.

Pluses. Looks like he make the line calls, so obviously he’s pretty intelligent and experienced. While he doesn’t pancake anyone, he does seem to do just enough. Looks athletic enough to be able to get to the second level, but will need to be coached up on that. Good size and can probably add more weight to frame. Paws (though short arms). Good combine numbers, close to running a sub 5.0 which for his size/weight is impressive. Should be well conditioned coming from the Ducks fast tempoed O. From all accounts, his intangibles – intelligence, leadership and work ethic- are great.

    http://draftbreakdown.com/video/hroniss-grasu-vs-fsu-2014/

    • From SC’s link:

“The 6-3, 297-pounder started all 52 games he played in college. He suffered a left ankle injury in the Ducks’ 10th game this past season. He had surgery but returned for the College Football Playoffs semifinal at the Rose Bowl.

There, he blocked the man the Bears drafted in the second round Friday: Florida State defensive tackle Eddie Goldman.”

So, it might have been Goldman bullrushing him!

Also, maybe his ankle inj was still lingering in that game? Off to see another game.

      • watch him before the injury. I watched that FSU game, OSU, and one from earlier in the season (forget which one). Big difference.

        • Yeah, I’m watching, but my biggest worry is he looks soft.

He doesn’t finish or look to knock his block out. When you see Scherff, he’s driving his guy into the dirt. This guy is playing patty-cake at the second level and getting bull-rushed.

We’ll see. He looks decent, and obviously his other pluses might make up for his deficiencies, but I don’t want a younger, albeit more athletic, Garza.

          • I have a hard time judging Oregon OL guys. They all tend to look soft to me in college, but I think it’s because they run so many damn plays they’re trying to conserve as much energy as possible. I love his agility and think the strength will improve over time.

          • Yeah, he looks like he has good feet, mirroring well, but I know what you mean by them conserving energy (which could look like half-assing).
But Grassu just never jolts anyone (like Long did) or drives ppl back. It seems like he blocks for 1-2 seconds, then lets his man go instead of riding him out of the play.
That’s gotta change in the NFL.

          • Big Mike

Scherff is a rarity. He was also a top 5 pick in the entire draft. Not sold on Grasu, but his injury did impact his game play. Early tape he’s got more pop.

  • Viva

    DA HAWKSCE

    • BillW

I want you all to know I turned on the game for the second period. Wild scored 3. Turned it off. Hawks win.

      You’re welcome.

  • Chicago can now throw this front 7 out in run-stuffing situations:
    Eddie Goldman 336 pounds
    Ego Ferguson 315 pounds
Jay Ratliff or Ray McDonald 300 pounds
    Lamarr Houston 275 pounds
    Pernell McPhee 280 pounds
with some combo of ILBs who are between 240 and 250 pounds

I think CHI is going to have a top 10 run D this year, maybe top 5.

I still worry about their pass D. Don’t trust any of their S or LB in coverage and don’t think they’ll have a particularly great pass rush to mask that fact.

    • It looks like we can have a lot of flexibility.
      On obvious run downs

      Jenkins-Goldman-Rat-Mcdonald

      On “nascar” package

      Allen-Ego-Rat-Mcphee

      Naturally, the 3-4

      Jenkins-Rat/Goldman-McDonald

That’s not even accounting for the other guys like Bass, Washington, Sutton.

I just wonder who are nickle LBs will be?

      Bostic? Christian Jones? Crickets?

  • AlbertInTucson

Thought the Blackhawks were going break our hearts tonight. “Bad Cro” showed up in net for the 2nd period.

  • Irish Sweetness

Love to get up for an afternoon breakfast to find we’ve drafted the anchor points on both lines. POX address our three biggest needs with our first three picks. The boldness of drafting the center high, instead of the old patchjob routine. Needs to beef up, but I love it. And we got Goldman, though I fell in love with Carl Davis’ tape yesterday, but I trust the boys have done their work.

All good. Now let’s hit it out of the park tomorrow.

    • Trac

Exactly Irish. We got our hats handed to us in the trenches last year. Non sexy but solid blue chip payers. We may have just gotten our first lesson in almost 35 years on how to build a team.

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

I felt in love with him also, but team is in good hands.

  • Irish Sweetness

If we draft Ja’el Collins or TJ Clemmings tomorrow, then we’re building a real solid house.

But should we have drafted Ja’el Collins instead of Grassu? Drafted in 2 or 3, he said he’d play.

But this guy is a sweetheart – even if we have 6’2 250lb LBs out the kazoo. Zack Hodges. What a story.
