Money Where My Mouth Is: Three Picks for Week Ten

| November 12th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 3.01.04 PM

Rumor is I made a few picks last week. I have no recollection of this but it has been brought to my attention by several associates. (I was not disappointed in the Rams pick. That game could have gone either way. But I just didn’t think the Packers would lose back-to-back games or that the Bears defense could hold the Charger offense to 12 points.) This week, a rebound…and a theme! Road dogs!

BUFFALO BILLS +3 AT NEW YORK JETS

Here’s why I like the Bills to win outright tonight:

  • When Buffalo’s had their starting quarterback and star wide receiver, they’ve been a different team. Both will be looking to make their 2015 statement in front of a national audience tonight and thrust their team into the playoff race.
  • Jets defense has hit a wall. The Patriots got them for 30, the Raiders got them for 34 and last week the Jags offense managed 23 and – most importantly – kept the game close throughout.
  • I know the coaching staffs are entirely different (including a swap) but the combined score of the Bills/Jets games in 2014 were 81-26.

CHICAGO BEARS +7 AT ST. LOUIS RAMS

St. Louis will be in the 20s. The Bears should be in the 20s. Points just seem too many for a team quarterbacked by Nick Foles.

DETROIT LIONS +11 AT GREEN BAY PACKERS

This has all the makings of a back door cover, especially against a defense that just allowed the Broncos and Panthers – two struggling offenses – 29 and 37 respectively. I’ll take the points.

Season Record: 13-12-2

    YES!

I went off the Bills after liking them in this. It’s a toss-up game for me. Yes, the Jets defense have hit a wall, they’ve lost twice in a row, Ivory isn’t putting up the numbers … but Fitzy has the #3 QBR rating in the league. Brandon Marshall is on the team. They’re at home. Rex Ryan has no class. Banana skin game.

The lions lose by wide margins when they play good teams .. .which begs the question … are the Packers good? Cincinatti -10 at least gives you a shot. Stafford is not Cam Newton or Peyton Manning.

I like the Bears pick. Our losses have been mostly closely-run affairs. If we stack the box on Gurley, Foles isn’t really going to kill you over the top unless he somehow connects with Austin (if we double him, we’re sweet).

    (23-12)

    Main double:

    Bears +7
    JAX +5.5 (@Ravens)

    Minor double:

    Norway to beat Hungary 10/11
    Arizona +3 (@Seattle) 10/11

    • Huge Bear’s Penis

      why doesn’t Rex have class?

      • Scharfinator

I feel like this is a joke set up…

      • The GP

because his wife’s feet smell bad?

    • I think the Jets will be very fired up to stick it to Rex, especially after his captain stunt this week.

BTW, love Mike Greenberg’s idea of the NYJ captains handing the dude who punched Geno out a huge check for $600 in the captain’s handshake. That’s such a great trollback.

    • MB30SD

      Gambling is a gamble.

      I’m 1/2 Hungarian… fuck Norway.

      • Trac

That makes you a Hungary Jew. Yuk yuk. Hahaha

        • MB30SD

hmmmmm… how about crochet? do you think that sort of thing? Bowling?

Just throwing out some ideas to get you started…

          • Trac

Aw shucks, don’t be likes that maings.

  • Bears-4-Ever

The St. Louis Rams Defense is a tough one to figure out. If the “good” Rams Defense shows up, Jay will be running for his life the whole game. If the Defense that played the Dikes last week show up the Bears will Win by a 14 Point Margin.

    • the interior of Chicago’s OL against Aaron Donald terrifies me.

      • 505Bears

Cutty will be in alot of shotgun. Look for at least one screen for the first 3 or 4 possessions and a bunch of delayed draws. Then second half, it will pay off as the Rams corners like to bite on those fakes and go for the pick 6…Once again, Bears D just has to keep it within 1 score by halftime until the halftime adjustments are made.

      • The GP

        Did Oh-my-meh get suspended?

        • CanadaBear

          Nope just Faberje Egg.

  • AlbertInTucson

Foles lit the Bears up as an Eagle in 2013, 54-11.

    • Scharfinator

This was when Foles was new to the league and so was Chip Kelly’s offense.

And we were bad. Though we still are 🙁

    • ah yes. the 50+ laugher. we call those the “Trestman Delight”

  • Trac

Do Jeff’s tie’s count as a zero sum push? Is there any fee or loss of money when he ties?

    • typically, the bookie takes 10% out, and then you either win or lose after that.
So if you bet $110 on even odds, you end up with $200 if you win and $0 if you lose. In a push, you end up with $100 back.
In that scenario, Jeff has bet $2970 this year and currently has $2800, so he’s down $170 on the year.

      • AlbertInTucson

“The Vig” is where the house makes it’s money.

      • Trac

If that’s the case, why does Jeff present his picks like he’s winning? Sho me da monay!!!

        • he was winning until a week or two ago. Had a rough last couple weeks.
But mostly I think he posts this for accountability and generally to stimulate discussion, plus it’s a chance to share his thoughts on some non-Bears teams.

          • Trac

I’m most just ribbing Jeff but it would be intellectually honest if he included his balance sheet.

          • That’s what the W/L is for.

          • Trac

Not really, he’s actually in the red but his record suggests he’s in the black.

          • Irish Sweetness

Depends on how you bet them. I get one pick wrong out of every three or 4 – but I back in doubles, trebles, sometimes 4-timers. On good prices, I’ll just back the one team. e.g. the Bears were 7/2 to beat the Chiefs. But 1 loss out of 3 or 4 can cost you your whole bet. Greed is not good.

  • Sactowns#1

I have finally returned from SD and I think my liver may be dead. I practically moved in to Ballast Points tasting room in Little Italy. They have sooooo many good beers. Fillipis Pizza Grotto was super tasty as always. Met up with MB and Murph for some football and drinks. It was a damn good time. And of course the game… oh the game. There were sooooo many Bears fans. As soon as we walking in to the parking lot we saw two Chicago flags about 20 feet up in the air. We made our way there for use as a rallying point. The other fans there welcomed us and instantly started feeding us shots of Kraken and Jim Beam. I was in heaven.

Not sure if you could tell at home but the crowd really got into it and was actively trying to disrupt Rivers ability to communicate. I would guess the stadium was 40-50% Bears fans. And the stadium… is a totally pilke a crap. Huge lines for everything, no real permanent food stands, tiny “big screens” with no replays played. I’m glad be have Soldier and I’m glad we beat the Chargers.

  • AlbertInTucson

The Bears last visit to St.Louis was NOT pretty.

  • BillW

I believe the Bears will have a significant upset (“statement” game if you will) sometime this year. That is, one where people around the league take notice that the new regime is working and the team is on the rise.

We all know it is, but I doubt too many reporters outside Chicago think that. They damn with faint praise (“not as bad as last year”; “doing better than expected”) but nothing to indicate that there is a sustainable difference in place here.

That said, this game certainly would qualify. If it had to be one game and I could choose it, obviously I’d want it to be Thanksgiving night.

Part of the narrative that often goes with a team on the rise winning a game they were not expected to, is criticism of said favorite team. You know – stuff like “the Rams are in trouble; they really aren’t’ very good etc. – rather than the Bears are turning the corner. But that’s OK.

This could even be considered a “trap” game for StL.

My optimism is in the point JWood brings up about the Bears being weak up the middle against the run. Obviously Fangio knows that and we’ll see what type of compensation he can make there.

I’m looking forward to this game.

    • beninnorcal

I’d like the dinal GB game to be that ‘statement’ game

      • willbest

Me too, but in GB 4 days after they go up against the Bronco’s D… that is not happening.

        • BillW

          Yes – Thanksgiving night.

If ever Rodgers will want to pitch a perfect game, it will be the night Favre gets his jersey retired. So there is no mistake as to who the best Packer QB ever is.

And somehow I suspect Favre wouldn’t mind seeing Rodger lose this one.

I expect a QB north of 120 with 0 interceptions as usual It’s the lack of interceptions that make him so different (and better in my opinion at least) than Favre ever was.

          • willbest

Another point worth mentioning is Packers will tie the all time series with the win, on Farve night. Its like the designed the game to be an automatic

          • BillW

Makes me sick to realize that. Back in the 80s that looked impossible. Even in the 90s. Then about 10 years ago I started to think it actually could happen but still didn’t think it would. And here we are.

I don’t know where to direct my hatred of that to – there are too many places for it to go beginning with Wanny.

  • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

I know we beat a struggling team in the Chargers, but damn something feels different about this week. Is it because Victories are so sparse these days? Or is it because I’m finally seeing flashes of who the bears will end up being. Good on offense, Stingy and overachieving on defense (eg; plays hard). We still have a long way to go this year and on this rebuild, but my emotions tell me the bears turned a corner this week. My brain is telling my emotions not be fooled again. But, you know, that’s for another thread.

So is it just me being blinded by the V (like so many of us men are) or does anybody else sense something good from this….?

    • Trac

I guess we’re seeing the Bears slug out some tough wins Doc and we’re sipping the Koolaid again after a win. I was kinda surprised when I said, “we have us a football team” after we beat SD and multiple posters corrected me by saying “no, the Bears suck.”

I’m looking at you Big Mike, J.Wood and Irish.

      • Sactowns#1

They have gutted out a couple tough wins and coached themselves into a couple of tough losses. Bears could easily be 5-3 right now.

        • Scharfinator

Yup. I think they really are a 3-5 team, but the wins should have come from different places (Det and Min instead of KC and Oak)

          • Trac

Smh. I don’t even know who you are anymore. Lol

        • Big Mike

          Or 0-8, no?

      • I think they could be a good team next year if they have a great offseason. Right now I’d say they’re a slightly below-average team. They are well coached and play hard, but lack the talent to compete with top teams.
I think they played sloppy football on Monday night and left waaaaaaaaaay too many points on the field, but it worked out ok because SD is bad.

        • The GP

Goldman is playing passable football. Jenkins might stick around.

They will want to cut bait with Ego and Sutton. Houston is gone. Acho is not the answer out there.

So there’s a lot of parts to swap this offseason. I haven’t even started on the inside linebacker situation.

          • still too early to say for Ego/Sutton, IMO. Both have looked like at least passable depth this year.
I also haven’t given up by CornWash. So sad by his injury, I thought he might be the best DL by the end of this year.

          • CanadaBear

I was hoping for more from Ferguson, had no expectations for Sutton. I think Houston might stick around but he’ll have to play up to the contract for sure. Totally agree about Washington. The last month of last year he looked like it all came together and I was excited to see him this year. Do you think Jones will take the next step? No comment on CD.

          • The GP

We’ve all been dazzled by CornWash’s Luke Cage body. He looks like a Spellman.

But it never comes together for the cat.

          • I thought CornWash looked really good in the preseason this year. Made a couple smart plays that require brains, not brawn.

          • Irish Sweetness
        • Big Mike

A “great” off season would make them a contender. 1 good FA pick up, 4 starters from the draft, +Kevin White being Amari Cooper like.

          SHAZAAM

          • MB30SD

            SHAZAAAAAM MOTHERFUCKERS!

          • Sactowns#1

Can anyone tell me what Shazam stands for without googling?

          • MB30SD
          • Irish Sweetness

Apparently Peter griffin shouts this when reaching orgasm? I thought it was a super hero … not a kick in the balls.

          • Big Mike

Yes. Captain Marvel. AKA Shazzam. A regular guy turns into a super hero fast strong etc. when he says SHAZZAM

          • Sactowns#1

Ah but it’s an acronym… What does it stand for?

          • Big Mike

Don’t think I ever knew it was an acronym, so I can’t say I forgot.

            Spell it out

          • Sactowns#1

So Captain Marvel could transform from a kid into a grown man superhero by reciting Shazam. When he did so he would get the wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, something from Atlas (endurance?) something from Zeus, bravery of Achilles, and something from Mercury. I don’t think Trac would approve of the anti Christian message.

      • Big Mike

Never have I ever said this years version of the Bears sucks. I like this team. I think they have a solid foundation. What I may have said is tap the breaks, because we could just as well be 0-8, as we could be 6-2. I believe we will follow the trajectory of the Vikings. But will be more stable next year because of QB play.

        • Trac

I’m thinking it was Johnny wad or someone else. No matter, I really do like this team. Arrow is trending up imo.

          • Johnnywad

Wrong. I’ve been bullish on this team all year

      • Irish Sweetness

We beat San Diego Trac, they’re 2-7. Enjoy the footie, but we are what our record says we are. We’ll get there, but not before about eighteen months.

    • Big Mike

The V does definitely change the outlook. Case in point after 2 V’s back to back (all puns intentional), and geting to 2-3 the blog had a very high % of posts about playoff chatter. 2 losses later, we happy to be entertained and competitive.

At the same time, the team is showing all of the signs of a good young squad figuring some things out. The offense is performing pretty damn well with the pieces it has. Will get better if/when Royal returns.

The defense shows energy and they are more athletic than they have been for some time. Big plays seem to be mental errors due to inexperience not incompetence.

Special teams.. oh man every week there is a new leak. 6 off the board from Gould last week 7 on the board the week before. etc.

To the point. This is a fun team that has my respect.

      • I said before the season this team was like MIN, only 1 year behind. Still looks a lot like that to me.

        • Big Mike

That is spot on. I said at the beginning of the season I hoped they followed MN trajectory. Which meant a year with a losing record but a lot of questions answered, identity established and ending strong.

      • Irish Sweetness

I’m just looking forward to next year and the year after, when they think they have the right players, and the unwanted remnants of Trestman and Emery have been removed. Two drafts and FA? We’ll be singing!

        • Big Mike

Enjoy the journey. We’re getting there.

    Alshon’s tweaked. Not practicing.

    http://espn.go.com/chicago/

    • saw that. i’m shocked.

    • Sactowns#1

Jeesh. That guy is like 50% of our offense. What would our record be if he and Cutty played every game this year?

    • His contract is going to be interesting. He’s probably as good as Dez, but he’s never healthy. Dez Bryant was very inconsistent early too, but now has become a force.
Alshons contract has to be heavily incentive based.
It’s handicaps the offense every week while using valuable cap space from a playmaker on D or even oline.
Said it before, but if thw right offer comes along, i.would trade him

  • Trac
    • The GP

He’s an upgrade over Willie Young, but we’re stuck with Young’s contract

I’ve always thought he was way overrated because he’s media friendly.

      • beninnorcal

I think he could be HOF material.

    • Irish Sweetness

Why write that article? Most players won’t be HOFers.

      • yep. Forte’s a classic “Hall of Very Good” guy. Like Hines Ward. Really good player who puts up solid stats for an extended period of time but is not a transcendent talent that goes to the HOF

      • Irish Sweetness

Interstellar Overdrive!!! Drugs and long hair !!!

        • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

I haven’t logged onto COD in years. I still have PS3. If my wife found out I was playing COD instead of trying to constantly get her pregnant she’d kill me.

          • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

Sheesh. 3 Wasn’t enough for her? Who does she think you are, Philip Rivers?

But seriously, sometimes I think pregnancy is like a drug for some women. They just can’t get enough of it. They get to eat whatever they want and you can’t say dick about it, and you’ll have to get off your barcalounger at a moments notice to go get tonights special craving: Meatloaf, Pickles, and baby corn. They get to insist you stop the car at a moments notice so they can take a piss even if you just left the pisser, and you can’t say dick about it (I’ve tried, don’t follow). They get to hear all kinds of complements like, “oh, your’e glowing” or “Oh, you’re carrying really well this time (whatever the fuck that means). They get to get free shit all the time in form of baby showers….

Oh and then you get to take yet another stroll through the name game. Shall we call him Bruce or Dylan? Shall we call her Yoko or Cher? Not to mention your poor dogs get blamed for all the extra gas in the house even though they don’t get to choose their food. Not to mention each child (husband included) now slides one rung further down on the totem pole. I stopped mattering about two children ago. No bitterness here.

So yeah, you go ahead and get dupped into that one, Johnny. But it’ll be your grave your digging. Hope you enjoy the big piece of chicken…

          • BillW

Yep – that about covers it. And even after they are all grown and out of the house the attitude of being privileged by virtue of being a mother continues. My wife is retiring while I work two jobs while still paying loans and a second mortgage from college bills (the kids have loans too btw).

“But work is just so stressful and besides that’s a man role anyway…”

          • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

mostly just baby corn. It’s like they took a delicious product and shrunk it down to Mini-me size, and it’s just as evil tasting.

          • MB30SD

          • Sactowns#1

Mini corn is neither mini nor corn. Discuss amongst yourselves.

          • MB30SD

they are indeed very immature corn stalks, taken whilst ‘in the womb’.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_corn

To doc’s point, they are also called “Devil corn”

          • MB30SD

in fact, you just sealed the deal for me. I’m picking up thai on my way home tonight.

My first non-date or kids night in like 2 weeks. I’m giddy about sitting on my couch allllll alone eating spicy thai chicken awash in mini corn, and killing dudes on COD… maybe I’ll catch a flick too, then OD on Nyquil. BOOM!!!

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Doc, I’m going to need you to be honest and tell me how you really feel.

I would guess almnost every single player in the NFL has taken some sort of PED. Funny thing is you listen to some of the former players and they laugh. Oh you only get tested at certain times and certain days etc. And the off season? It’s free reign! Cycle on for 3 months and cycle back off in time to get tested.

Everyone always makes fun of bike racers (and they should) for being such dopers. If the big 4 sports leagues in the US had the same testing as bike racing it would take down a crazy amount of athletes.

        • baseball got strict on it a few years back, and all of a sudden guys aren’t as good for as long anymore.

NBA didn’t even test for PEDs until a few years ago, and when they announced they would half the league lost 20 pounds that offseason “to get in better shape” (including LeBron)

My guess is he is on IR and taking something that has to do with his injury and more than likely on that dont take list, or he figured since he was on IR he was safe to do as he pleases.

You’ll be a busy boy sucking diesel out of abandoned cars to run that thing.

I’ll be on a horse with my samurai sword and a claw hammer.

      • MB30SD

They have horses in Thailand Braveheart? ; )

  • Cubsnlinux

Wow .. Just realized that the Bears aren’t playing Thursday night football this year.

    • Cormonster

      They sure are on Thanksgiving.

      • and no way in hell am I watching that game

        • Cormonster

I’ll be at my parents house. The house will be divided between Bears and Packer fans.

          • MB30SD

            Foooood fiiiiiight!

  • FourFeathers

So now Ego is a cheat. So what we have to show for 3 years of that fuckhead Phil Emery at the draft table is Jeffries and Long. Maybe Sutton as a fringy guy. That is IT. God it is so damned pathetically sad.

    • MB30SD

      Zoiks!!

Dude, have you tried Prozac yet? My goodness man.

      • Big Mike

Every now and then the debacle that was Emery gets a bit worse and it pisses people off. That his drafts are turning out even worse than expected AND he saddled us with a sorry excuse of a coach for two years, just sucks.

        • MB30SD

Yeeeah, I get it.but arrow up and some of the young guys are looking strong. Arrow up y’alls!

          • Big Mike

Very pleased with where we are heading. Maybe we had to have emery and trestman to need a HC and GM when our guys were ready and available. It will take me a long time to forget giving up 50 back to back and cutting the grass while the Bears were on

Brandon Hardin in the third round
            Drafting Evan Rodriguez

It’s like what Blofeld does to Bond in this new flick

          • Big Mike

David Fales, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene, Jared Allen, Ryan Mundy,

          • Irish Sweetness

Bond beds Monica Belluci. That I can understand. But then he kisses her the next morning, and he’s off! Within half an hour he’s in bed with another chick. WTF? Has Bond ever done two birds in one movie before?

            Love the song.

        • The GP

He stands breathless at the clean edge of infamy.

        • Irish Sweetness

The decision to draft two defensive tackles in a row can be justified. But to draft THOSE two ….

    • beninnorcal

      *Jeffery

  • The GP

Talk about not asking your QB to do too much.

Rex coulda asked the ice cream concession guy to do this….

  • Jets down 5 with 3 minutes left, 4th and goal from the 3 yard line.

    They throw it to…

    wait for it…

    KELLEN DAVIS!!!!

And it went exactly like you would expect. Davis doesn’t see the ball until it’s past him (even though he’s WIDE open), Jets lose.

Besides looking like he should be a good football player, is there any reason why Kellen Davis is still in the league? Does he have nudes of all the owners or something? Can’t run good routes, can’t catch, can’t block. Besides that, he’s fantastic.

    • Irish Sweetness

I saw that. If Kellen is remotely aware of what’s going on – the Jets win.

LSD plays the blog bar. Chill. Pull up a pew.

    • Cormonster

LSD just announced new tour dates for next year. I’m gonna go see them at First Avenue in Minneapolis, which is a really cool place. It’s where Prince played Purple Rain in the movie. Did you happen to catch my link for their Halloween song this year where they play Bohemian Rhapsody? I thought they did a really good version. Here it is.

    • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

Damn, Irish. That woman has some chops! Fuckin A.
