Money Where My Mouth Is: Three Picks For Week Seven

| October 22nd, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 3.01.04 PM

2-0-1 this week because I was apparently the only person on earth who had the Bears +3 instead of the 4.5 they went off at by kickoff. 7-1-1 over my last nine picks.

No joke. I hate the games this week. Hate the games. Hate the lines. So it’s going to take some luck.

COLTS -4.5 OVER SAINTS

While the football world was declaring the Pats would beat the Colts Sunday night by 100 points as some kind of deflation retribution, Luck kept the Colts neck-and-neck until his moron head coach decided to run one of the stupidest plays every devised for the game of football. Even Chuck Pagano, a terrible head coach, won’t be able to prevent Luck from shredding the Saints defense at home. Indianapolis 34, New Orleans 20.

PATRIOTS UNDER 28.5 VS. NEW YORK JETS

The Jets are the best defense in football and if Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn’t go through a six-week run of interceptions – as is his history – they are going to be a beast to deal with in the postseason. (A Jets v. Broncos wild card game could go to penalty field goals.) New England is the better team here but I like needing them to score more than four touchdowns. New England 20, New York 17.

RAMS -5.5 OVER BROWNS

Rams are good. Browns are not good. Rams defense is terrific. The last time Josh McCown went into St. Louis as a starting quarterback he was thoroughly embarrassed. Rams have Todd Gurley. Browns have the league’s worst rush defense. I don’t see how this game is close. St. Louis 27, Cleveland 6.

Season Record: 10-6-2

  • let me be the first to welcome Sactown to the new thread.

    • Sactowns#1

Gracias senior. Btw muy bueno bigote

      • MB30SD

el se afietalo unos messes passado buey.

  • AlbertInTucson

Colts v Saints: Battle of the sore shoulders.

  • AlbertInTucson

Wait a second. I think Daniel Murphy just hit another homer.

    • CanadaBear

Whatever else you write don’t say they had any luck. The Mets had none. They were the better team and deserved to win. Happy now E?

      • AlbertInTucson

At least there’s nothing for Cub fans to angonize over.

The Mets never trailed the entire series.

        • CanadaBear

No kidding. Any time a club gets on a roll they are getting some breaks. Doesn’t mean they’re lucky, it just means they got the bounces. That’s sports. The mets series reminded me of the Philly series around the all-star break. That’s the way it goes.

      • evidence of cubs not having any luck at all:

        – the wrigley ivy wiping at least 1 mets run off the board
        – pop-up falling in between 3 mets
        – kyle hendricks pitching high in the zone and the mets making solid contact that keeps going to fielders
        – yoenis cespedes leaving game 4 after 1.5 innings

Nope. No luck there. Not a single solitary iota of good fortune for the cubbies.

        • CanadaBear

The cubs hit at least a dozen ropes with men on base and every one of them was caught. Not unlike Castro’s bullett to 3rd with the bases loaded and no outs. I said the mets caught a ton of breaks. Newsflash … they did. I said the mets beat the cubs either way. Sorry I rained on your mets parade.

        • BillW

Snuck back to the older thread and saw your response to me. I’m no expert on hitting by any means but I always looked at it this way – most of the time the hitter is simply looking to make solid contact with the ball. After that, there is a certain “randomness” in what happens (assuming they hit the ball). You want to hit it where they ain’t, but mostly you want to hit it.

Exactly where it ends up is not at all planned. It might be a weak ground ball because you topped; it might be a pop up that (luckily) the wind catches funny; it might be a sinking line drive; it might end up in the ivy; it might end up in the seats.

There are exceptions – batters trying to pull, batters trying for the opposite field, bunting, batters swinging for the fences.

So there is luck in some sense. And it was and always is on both sides. I think all I was saying is that Maddon could get away with Schwarber in the outfield as long as nothing difficult was hit his way. It’s a risk – and in that sense luck (good or bad) plays into it.

(Re – the Ivy and Mets’ fans reaction. It’s been there for a long time. They act like they grew it just to screw the Mets.)

    • The GP
  • That Pats line seems high. 28.5 against the Jets?
But then again, NE always seems to have a 40+ point game each year that comes out of nowhere against good defenses.

    • BerwynBomber

They actually already had one in W2 or W3 against the Bills in BUF. At the time the Bills D was thought to be on par with their D last year.

  • BerwynBomber

Blogfather has been hot lately with these picks and his logic seems pretty sound on these three as well. Good stuff.

P.S. SEA/SF could be mildly interesting tonight. Gotta believe an absolute must win for the fading SEA, and Kaepernick (for at least the last two weeks) has looked competent. Plus, it’s become a pretty fierce PIT/BAL-like rivalry in the last few years, even if the Harbaugh v. Carroll dynamic is now missing.

  • WP34

    Blogfather. Thanks for article: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2580349-why-i-drafted-jay-cutler-and-what-happened-from-there?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=web-des-art-top-16

I have been living in denver before #6 was here, a few years back I stopped wearing his jersey, I was getting into conflict after conflict.

This year I said Fukit, I wear it on game day, my gut has always understood what the article states.

I take Jay as my QB – the good and bad.

I dont like #18; and I can’t understand Dablog posters love affair with Rodgers like BerwynB, etc…

    Thanks Blogfather. GO Bears!

    • BerwynBomber

Love affair? Yeesh. I think it’s just recognition of superb play.

I feel the same about Rodgers as I do AP, Megatron, Matthews, the now-departed Suh and Woodson. I respect HoF rivals even if they are the enemy.

      • MB30SD

hahaha, I’m backing you up here BB. Twas I after all who dubbed him, the wizard.

Rodgers plays for another 5-10 years at the same level and he’ll be on of the best 2-3 QBs to ever have played the game. Lot of green between there and now, but he’s ridiculous.

        • BerwynBomber

          Thanks, MB.

Yeah, we will see about Rodgers. I think the man needs another SB title to join those lofty ranks (and I’m not sure it will happen). But yeah, I don’t see what the huge deal is when recognizing greatness in a rival when the individual has earned it.

Liking and respecting are two different things.

          • WP34

Fine. Liking and respecting are two different things.

I guess I HATE rodgers. I think he is the “Wizard” but I think he is kinda a crybaby.

          • MB30SD

            agree. see above.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

OHH SNAPP!!! you tell em BB. Got to respect HOF type players

      • WP34

Whenever someone mentions how Jay is or isn’t, you throw in how #12 always does it better.

I saw your comments after the chiefs game. Jay is great… then we won because our defense had, etc…

I agree with this: “Rodgers plays for another 5-10 years at the same level and he’ll be on of the best 2-3 QBs to ever have played the game.”

If you don’t like jay fine…just stop blowing our arch rivals QB just like the rest of nfl nation. This is a BEARS blog. Grow a sack.

        • BerwynBomber

Oh, please. I have gone out of my way NOT to compare Cutler to Rodgers or vice-versa. Again, it is silly.

Appreciate that not all fans, even of the same team, will be alike. It will help you moving forward.

          • WP34

Liking and respecting are two different things. Fine.

I guess I HATE rodgers. I think he is the “Wizard” but I think he is kinda a crybaby.

          • MB30SD

I’m in your boat too. I hate that smug douchey fuckstick, but god damn it the clown is so fucking good. Farve then his ass… just not fucking fair.

          • WP34

I saw a stat that we have had 20-25 starting qb’s since they have had #4, #12.

I get it that #12 is off the charts in every category…arm strength, ball placement etc…I have been watching him kick our ass for years. I don’t need to hear about how great he is when Jay fuks up, is taking 52 sacks in a season etc…

I guess I am more of a meathead and would take #4 over #12 because I respected #4 toughness. That is one of the reasons I like and respect jay.

          • WP34

            Using Silly, Stupid, etc…

Do you really think that what you think is all knowing. It is just your opinion man, just like mine. Just because you think it doesn’t mean its true (same for me).

          • BerwynBomber

Then stop making up shit. I compared Cutler and Rodgers ONCE during this season and it was in a response to Cheesy when I said Cutler (after the KC game) had outplayed Rodgers that day.

Look, I get that you walk around in your #6 jersey and think Jay’s the world. But guess what? Fans of the team disagree on players all the time, NOT just about Jay Cutler.

So grow the F up and stop calling me out on your posts when I haven’t even done anything. You can have your opinion on all you want but there was no reason to make me part of it.

          • WP34

By thinking you know what I think – you are proving your own ignorance.

You didn’t say Stupid, Silly etc… in your remarks…

BB when your being an Asshole you do what I did- ABOVE: “I picked a blog fight with BB a few moments ago, because I didn’t take kindly to having my thoughts called stupid. We are now done. I apologize to all for hijacking the blog”.

Then you go start up again.
“So grow the F up and stop calling me out on your posts when I haven’t even done anything… ”

You clearly watch more football than me at my age in life. With that said there is no need for you to use terms… Stupid, Silly, Butt Hurt etc…

If I were in the same room as you I would Kick your ass then if you chill out buy you a beer.

You need to learn to watch what you say.

          • BerwynBomber

Shut up, you little douche. You started this WHOLE fucking thing and now you also feel entitled to have the last word.

Again, you trolled me. I responded. End of story.

          • WP34

little douche – lets meetup .

          • BerwynBomber

Oh, good lord. You want to pick physical fights on the Internet now? And I’m supposed just to sit back and take you calling me names? SMFH.

          • Sactowns#1

Who the hell are you? Trying to hijack the thread for your own immature, self centered needs? Come on and offer some insight, humor, valid points before you wander into the bar as some random off the streets and start demanding free beer.

          • AlbertInTucson

Not taking sides here because I don’t even recall the post, probably because I collapsed the original which callapses all the responses with it.

BUT, this is what comes of responding to posts from known trolls.

            COLLAPSE them, I say!

            COLLAPSE them!

            We’ll all be better off.

    • BillW

Getting back to the article itself, I saw it over lunch and tried to read it all. Very long and detailed. And insightful – not just about Jay but the behind the scenes. A good read.

      • WP34

The most complete, without an agenda, that I have seen on our QB.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Bottom Line:

We’ve seen the Bears WITH Cutler.

      We’ve seen them WITHOUT Cutler.

The latter is not only NOT pretty, it is virtually un-watchable.

      • WP34

Agree. Ready for Fox/Pace to build a smart, tough, disciplined team.

  • BillW

    I, NoBot
    (thanks, GP!)

  • WP34

I picked a blog fight with BB a few moments ago, because I didn’t take kindly to having my thoughts called stupid. We are now done. I apologize to all for hijacking the blog.

Can we return to the program:

MB – if you would so kindly sir when you have a moment and share some Ta Tas Thursday’s that would be fantastic.

    Cheers.

    • MB30SD

awwww, look at the manners on this kid! you two kiss and make up now!

How can I turn down a request like that?!? coming soon!

  • The GP

    http://www.chicagofootball.com/2015/10/22/chicago-bears-ilb-coach-confident-in-whats-to-come-from-mcclellin-jones/at5v6p5/

This is like a scene in Inglorious Basterds.

You get up there, you say he’s very good, his arrow is pointing up – that Chicken Dinner has a bright future.

Then you shoot him in the head.

CD is not back next year. If they say nice things about him, maybe somebody picks him up. But his option was passed, and he’s a goner.

    • Big Mike

CD has done better at ILB than I would have projected. A bunch of people here have commented on how difficult and rare it is for a ball player to switch positions after they’ve gotten to the NFL. I’m not talking about the OL, but else where it is rare. So hats off to CD. But he’s not an impact NFL player. The guy that came in for him had more impact plays in a game than CD had all season.

      • MB30SD

        jes. this.

Thank you for your impression of a cardboard cutout of an NFL linebacker while we waited to find some UDFA to usurp you.

  • MB30SD

well, we just cut the rat?!

    • Bear Down in Tampa

That’s what happens when you yell at the GM.

      • MB30SD

        jes

      • Big Mike

What was the yelling? I’ve been immersed in projects and Cubness 🙁

      • AlbertInTucson

…and you;re an aging DT who can’t stay on the field for any length of time lately.

        • Big Mike

He looked quicker than every DT out there last week, for the few plays he was in .

          • AlbertInTucson

            He was quick all right.

            Quickly out of the game.

            Quickly off the roster.

          • MB30SD

            hee hee

  • Big Mike
    • BerwynBomber

Yeah, mildly shocking. Wonder if it went beyond performance.

      • AlbertInTucson

He’s 34, hasn’t seen the field much lately. Even if he doesn’t tear into the GM it’s not exactly “Shocking”.

        • BerwynBomber

Yeah, I just got back and missed the backstory.

Shocking? Ok, I’ll stick with surprising, but if you saw this coming, bully for you.

          • AlbertInTucson

Not saying I saw it coming.

I didn’t even realize he was 34 until I did some research.
His age takes the shock out of it.

So does he performance of late.

In any case, how stupid do you have to be to play chicken with the fresh-out-of-the-box GM?

          • BerwynBomber

Agreed on all counts. And yeah, I would have pegged him for 31 or so. 34 is a big difference given football years are like dog years.

          • AlbertInTucson

Yep. I assumed he was 31 or maybe 32.

He went out of Sunday’s game and did not return.

Wonder if he hooks on somewhere else this season?

          • BerwynBomber

Hell, maybe DET. Gotta imagine their interior D-line not only took a HUGE talent but even a decent depth hit when they lost both Suh and Fairley.

          • AlbertInTucson

I would think it would have to be someone with realistic playoff hopes.

I don’t think the Loins qualify.

          • BerwynBomber

            Good point.

    • MB30SD

      old news mike! ; )

      • Big Mike

been working, been following the cubs, cleaning up a hangover.. etc

        • MB30SD

I’m sorry about that. Console yourself with the realization that’s it’s only fucking baseball my man.

          • Big Mike

I have. But I’ve been a Cubs fan as long or longer than I’ve been a Bears fan. Far more passionate about football. I can shut the Cubs off for seasons at a time, while still checking in on them and going to a game or two when they come to town. But when they play good ball I get back into it. Keep the game on the radio in the house, check stats and so on. Playoff Baseball is a whole different thing. Knocking the Cardinals out was like beating the Packers twice in the regular season.

          • MB30SD

I’m just fucking around maings. I don’t like baseball… way too boring for me, but I get it’s beloved here. I like going to games if that counts for anything.

If it makes you feel better, when I go home my dad and uncle make me watch cricket with them. Cricket is a weird 3-day baseball game.

          • Big Mike

From what I’ve picked up, Cricket can last three days and they might even know who the winner is with like 1/2 a day to go…

          • AlbertInTucson

I’ve heard that too. And it’s almost a religion in India.

          • MB30SD

yep, and they just beat us. bastards and their smart people and amazing food… and TIGERS!!!

          • AlbertInTucson

            Baseball was my first passion.

I played in a Strat-O-Matic Baseball League of some kind for over 20 years.

Replayed the entire 1964 White Sox Season with the APBA game (Sox won the pennant and the World Series in that replay, BTW).

Now I’m a pretty casual baseball fan.

Kind of like White Sox management.

          • BerwynBomber

You’re far wiser than White Sox management.

    • AlbertInTucson

He’s 34. He just gave the Bears an excuse to move on from him now instead of later.

    • AlbertInTucson

I bet Ratliff didn’t see it coming, either.

    • The No ‘Bot

      NO!!!!

      • MB30SD

        oh god

        • Sactowns#1

I see a trend has begun.

  • MB30SD

    So by popular request….

she’s been going out with verlander for a few year. That young rich motherfucker.

        • Big Mike

          what a rack..

          • MB30SD

            she is so incredibly hot.

    • WP34

Thank u. Much needed. (BB started up with me again below)

      • BerwynBomber

No I finished. You started up; in fact, you started the whole thing. I’m done with the subject.

        • WP34

I didn’t call peoples statements Stupid, Silly, Butt Hurt… that is you Bro.

I don’t know what u finished; except hearing your own thoughts.

          • BerwynBomber

Really, you just called me an A-hole.

Honestly, you started this whole Fing thing by bringing me up in your post today. I responded.

You don’t like me, I don’t like you. Leave it at that.

          • MB30SD

jesus, you two get a room.

            And anjoy the titties

          • Sactowns#1

Seriously. These girls cant get enough of each other.

          • MB30SD

            hahahaha

    • WP34

Very nice. Thanks for the reality check.

    • Sactowns#1

Hundreds of thousands of dollars of fakies. No thanks!

      • MB30SD

        more for MEEEEEE!!!!

      • MB30SD

we are going to get along famously when you come to town.

ME: Ok, sac… here’s the game plan
        SAC: Ok, shoot MB
ME: I’ll take all the fakie boobies in the bar, you take all the naturals
SAC: sounds good MB, but how will you know if a gir….
ME (cutting in): Sac, I’m a trained expert. Trust me, it will be fine.
        SAC: uh, ok.
        ME: Reeeeeady….. BREAK!

        • DaMurph

WTF am I doing? refereeing the titty competition?

          • MB30SD

You’re fucking old and married for christ’s sake. I’m trying to protect you and the sanctity of your marriage. You don’t want to scar your boy with that anyway.

            …and yes.

          • MB30SD

            love you!

          • DaMurph

Yeah I guess youre pretty much spot on, so this all has to occur before 10pm which is all us old peoples bed time!!

          • MB30SD

Hahahahahaha… after my brother, always after 10.

  • Sactowns#1

Alright, one or two people I can understand. Idk what the whole story is but it’s starting to sound like Pace is either keeping his finger on the pulse of the team and worried about chemistry or he’s a hardass and grown men might not be willing to put with him.http://www.sbnation.com/2015/10/22/9600200/jay-ratliff-release-bears-argument-general-manager-ryan-pace?ref=yfp

    • AlbertInTucson

I don’t see this as a referendum on Pace at all.

If Ratliff, who is 34 and has registered ZERO on the contribution meter this season. is dumb enough to confront the GM in public then it’s all on the Rat.

  • FourFeathers

Sounds like Theo Ratliff went apesh!t today and found himself unemployed, and probably unemployable moving forward.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Theo is the ex-NBA C-F.

      I looked him up.

Between 1995 and 2011 he played for ELEVEN different NBA teams!

  • So what the fuck happened with Rat?
    Seems like an odd story.
Did he go postal after Pace let him go, or before?

    • BerwynBomber

That’s the timeline part that is hard to determine.

    • WP34

Signed Ziggy hood; sounds like after.

“We felt moving forward without Jeremiah was in the best interest of our team,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said in a statement. “We appreciate his contributions and wish him well. We are also excited to be able to add Ziggy Hood to our roster.”

      • Irish Sweetness

Ziggy Hood. That sounds nothing like Terry Williams.

        @#$%!

    • AlbertInTucson

I would HOPE that Pace didn’t walk up to him OUTSIDE of Halas Hall and say “Oh, BTW, Jay, turn in your playbook”.

THAT would be an ass-hole move.

    • Irish Sweetness

I’m thinking drugs on his CV. Pace pulls the trigger. Rat – being drug-addled and alpha ….presents in the only way he can.

  • AlbertInTucson

Fight with Pace aside, Bears had no reason to keep playing Ratliff this season. Now I wish Bushrod would go pick a fight with Pace.”

I’m thinking Bushrod probably keeps a low profile in light of this.

Bears could roll out Vasher and Jerry Azumah at corner next week and we’d see improvement at the position.

  • If a team picks up Rat, that might be a bad omen for Pace. That might mean other GMs think it was Pace’s fault and side with Rat.

It could be a SB contender is desperate and hurting. Risk/reward.

    • AlbertInTucson

      “Bad omen for Pace”?

I don’t see that at ALL, whether Ratliff is able to catch on or not.

He’d have been gone from the Bears at the end of this season, regardless.

It’s not like he cut a Kyle Long.

      • He’d have been gone, but if Rat was in the right, what vet would wanna come over from FA if Pace gets a rep for being a wad?

However, Rat has a bit of a rep for erupting, so I don’t think this is on Pace.

        • MB30SD

stop this abject speculation sir. And may I have a turn with the crystal ball you got for your bday?

          • It’s all speculation, brother. I don’t know how this didn’t get reported yesterday in this day and age of TMZ tweet.

Bears run a tighter ship than the white house.

    • Sactowns#1

I concur. If it comes out that Pace is a hardass and driving people away from the team that would not be a good thing.

      • AlbertInTucson

        Highly unlikely, IMO.

    • BerwynBomber

I don’t see how signing Rat equates to taking his side. My guess is almost any GM’s decision would be based on whether Rat is useful and affordable. He is a one year rental.

      • GMs talk to each other. Some are even friends.

If Rat was in the face of a GM, he’ll be blacklisted.

However, if GMs around the league know Pace is a hardass, and maybe a bit of a hothead (highly unlikely), then Rat will be picked up, and that attitude doesn’t bode well for the future.

It’s much ado about nothing, I think. I speculate Rat confronted Pace about playing time. It got heated. He was escorted out (by police, no less).

        • The odd part is why didn’t Rat confront Fangio or Fox?

Or did he, and did they answer, “You’re not playing cuz of Pace.”?

    • Irish Sweetness

The football is more important – Rat’s gone. End of. I don’t know what Terry Williams did to Pace and I can’t understand why he’s not on this team, but he needs to get a phone call and a contract right now.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

did it ever occur to you that Terry Williams is not very good? He did get dropped from the practice squad a while back

  • WP4Life

Hope Jenkins is doing alright. I recall he got banged up in Det game.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Hmmm.

I don’t believe Fox mentioned him when he went over the injuries at the start of his post game presser Sunday.

      • WP4Life

This is last I saw, Bears’ Jarvis Jenkins leaves, returns after head injury.

        • AlbertInTucson

My bad, I think I DID hear him say that.

          • WP4Life

I didn’t take it that way. I took as you didn’t have an update like me.

One reason I am glad we are on a bye week.

          • AlbertInTucson

You jogged my memory. I think he only mentioned Rat and Jenkins and that Jenkins returned..

            Thankfully, a short list.

          • WP4Life

I threw it out there because with Rat now gone, I was wondering how Jenkins was/is.

  • MB30SD

I, personally, am all the way down with a hard-ass GM. If he’s good AND a hard-ass, that spells playoffs and a possible shot at a SB to me. I really like the way he’s run the ship so far. Maybe I’m doing the ol isle swing after the horrible tenure of the last regime, but I like it so far.

I’m all in until I sees something differents.

    • FourFeathers

Me too. Got to rid this team of cancers and those not willing to buy into the program. We are a roster poor bad team right now. Therefore no sense at all in keeping around a 34 year old malcontent who will never be part of the future anyway. I like how Pace and Fox do things a ton. Polar opposite of the old regime.

  • The GP

Did he flip out because he was fired, or did he get fired because he flipped out?

  • Pissed Off

Ratliff take a swing at pace or what….geez cops called and everything

  • AlbertInTucson

    49ers get spanked. At home.

    • Scharfinator

I mean, after that offseason, we knew they would collapse in on themselves like a dying star.

  • Irish Sweetness

(looks up in disgust from Ziggy Hood’s profile)

WTF? Did Terry’s rolodex card fall down behind the fax machine??

I just tweeted him. Hopefully he’s on his way ….

  • Irish Sweetness

    (14-10)

Got spanked last week. Every bet involved the Beloved winning outright. Tough loss. Still love my Bears.

Backed ATL, NYG, STL in a treble.

Will have a small bet on NYJ +9.

  • The Yes Guy

    …yes?

    • beninnorcal

      Nope.

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

got to agree not even close.
