Money Where My Mouth Is: Three Picks for Week Five

| October 8th, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 3.01.04 PM That’s more like it. The Dolphins crashed and burned. The Bears were never going to be beaten by more than a field goal. Detroit was every bit the equal of Seahawks in Seattle. 3-0, over the hump and back in the saddle again.

Chicago Bears +10 over Kansas City

Didn’t understand the line when it was released. Don’t understand it now. Usually that means I’m lost but I just don’t see this game as particularly lopsided and that’s an awful lot of points. More to come tomorrow…

PACKERS UNDER 27.5 PTS HOME TO ST. LOUIS

Packers always score a boatload of points at home. But I like them at 27 or below for two reasons:

  • This Rams defensive front can be hell for Aaron Rodgers to deal with for four quarters, especially Aaron Donald in the middle. Rodgers won’t have any time to look down the field for big strike, quick point plays. No big plays means points will take longer to score.
  • Todd Gurley. That was a “wow” performance from Gurley a week ago and I expect him to get better week-to-week. Want to keep Rodgers off the field? Feed Gurley.

NEW YORK GIANTS -7 VS. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

Niners are dead. They are the worst team in football. They have the worst quarterback in football. And they are going to play the eventual Super Bowl champion in primetime? No chance.

Record: 6-5-1 (+$40)

  • MB30SD

I would like to award irish +500 blog points for having the intestinal fortitude to stay out of the quicksand pit of disparate trac laid before us all on the last thread.

    Well done lad!

    • Trac

Hahaha. See what happens when someone mentions “drones” & “call of duty”.

By the way, my questions were honest and sincere. I believe the answer is no one knows what the heck we’re doing over there.

      • Johnnywad

That’ll be enough outta you sir

      • MB30SD

of course I know they were, and you are right. It’s a total clusterfuck and people are getting rich from it while our boys lose their lives. That said, what’s the alternative? what’s the answer for that matter?

How long is a piece of string. better just to focus on the nice, fun, small stuff we can control and enjoy.

…Here, take a cookie. I promise, by the time you’re done eating it, you’ll feel right as rain.

        • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

I certainly don’t know what happened yesterday on da blog and I don’t want to reopen a big debate, but I think focusing on the nice, fun, small stuff we can control and enjoy is exactly what our government wants us to do so we don’t ask the big questions. they keep us just poor enough and just busy enough and just entertained enough so that we don’t have time or energy to ask the hard questions.

          • MB30SD

            ed zachary.

And don’t go over there. It will break your soul… if but just a little.

    • BillW

And may I offer you 500 blog points for correctly using the word “orthogonal” in the last thread?

Plus bonus points for the irony in using it criticizing nerds.

  • The Yes Guy

    Yes.

  • MB30SD

“Niners are dead. They are the worst team in football. They have the worst quarterback in football. And they are going to play the eventual Super Bowl champion in primetime?”

Jeff…. you have GOT to be shitting me?! No way that’s happening. I’m calling AZ v Pats, with AZ pulling the upset.

    • Pissed Off

Niners are dead but I don’t agree with one other word in that statement from Jeff other than confirming the game is in primetime. Kaep is bad but he isn’t the worst QB in football quite obviously (and I think he could be decent with some help and a coach who knew how to properly use his skill set) and the Giants are not winning the SB.

      • Trac

I always thought he was a crap shoot as a qb.

        • Pissed Off

You gotta admit he was the bomb with Harbaugh for at least one stint. He needs to use his legs more.

          • Trac

Once a QB plays a physical run & gun offense, it’s very easy to lose your mojo. Running QB’S don’t last long in the NFL.

          • Pissed Off

            See RG3…

In 2015 no QB has been CLOSE to Kaep bad.

          James Clasuen

          • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

            He said Quarterback.

        • Trac

          Seen Ryan Mallet?

        • Sactowns#1

I was about to say… have you seen Cheddar Bob try to sling the rock?

  • Pissed Off

Too many points for the Chiefs. A couple weeks ago I might have agreed and I would certainly agree if Clausen was starting but we should keep this within 10 if not win outright.

If I were a betting man, and I tend not to be, I would say the pack will be held to 27 or less. The rams have to fired up right now and if they can’t keep the pack under 27 coming off that high then they don’t deserve to be talked about as a playoff contender (which I’m guessing they think they are especially after the nice AZ win).

The giants will beat SF by at least 2 TDs if not more. The niners are terrible. The only reason that the Giants dont blow out the niners would be the “trap” game scenario which we get every once in a while where for no reason whatsoever a team that is worse on paper in every single aspect pulls one out.

    • Trac

The Rams are a solid team. If they play their A game, they can probably beat any team in the NFL.

      • Scharfinator

Agreed, as long as that DLine stays healthy, they are a force to be reckoned with.

      • Albaro Martinez

that seems to be their problem. they play their division very hard, everyone else not so much. Unless they’re a good team then they give them a fight. I have not figured this team out

    • BerwynBomber

And the Pack aren’t as dynamic, offensively, as they were last year. Their only real offensive explosion occurred against KC. Rodgers still makes them mad efficient, and with Lacy they can ground and pound, but they ain’t hanging 40 on teams every other weekend like last year. They have no receiver who could stretch the field as consistently as Nelson did.

  • Bears-4-Ever

Just curious if anyone will be at the game in KC Sunday. Wife and I will be there, taking a weekend away to get some good BBQ, etc.

I have ZERO expectations for the Bears on Sunday…that’s a good thing because I’m hoping they are going to surprise me. 🙂

    • BillW

I do know some guys taking a road trip over there. Hope to see a large number of the faithful in attendance.

      Have a great time!

Nice. Never had the real deal, but I found a KC rib sauce recipe on allrecipes dot com that I like and use often for pulled pork.

  • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I’m not so sure about the GB one. They’re pretty much impossible to stop at home.

    In their last 11 home games (all from this year and last year, including playoffs), they’ve scored 27, 38, 26, 30, 43, 26, 53, 55, 38, 42, and 31.

Rodgers talks about having “package plays” (where they call 2-3 plays in the huddle and he can run any of them really easily with super basic audibles) at home that they can’t do on the road due to crowd noise. It makes them that much harder to stop.

And don’t look now, but their run D has actually been pretty dang good since they played Chicago. They held Marshawn Lynch to 41 yards, Jamaal Charles to 49 (though he had a pretty high 4.5 ypc), and Carlos Hyde to 25. They’ve struggled containing QBs on the run, but Nick Foles doesn’t run.

If this game was in STL, I’d be tempted to pick the Rams, as that kind of pass rush on the road is exactly what gives GB problems. But in GB, I think Packers put up 30+ pretty easily and roll.

    • BerwynBomber

Agree with you about the Cheese and Rodgers having more audible flexibility at home but he will be running for his life against St. Louis.

GB has a good O-line but Rodgers — surprise — covers up their deficiencies as well. SEA, KC and SF all generated good pressure on him, and though he was efficient against all three, SEA required every ounce of playmaking ability and SF largely held him in check. Plus, though Jones and Montgomery have played unexpectedly well for them, they still miss the quick-strike/deep threat aspect of Nelson.

STL has a better D-line than either SF, KC or even SEA (and STL’s secondary isn’t bad either). I’m thinking they can hold GB under 27 even at Lambeau.

      • TheBigCheesy

Bulaga has been out for the last 3 weeks. His replacement has been graded as one of the worst in the league. Bulaga might be back this week (maybe). It would be something to consider.

        • BerwynBomber

And Bachtierri or whatever his name is either getting beat or flagged a few times whenever I catch the Cheese on their left side.

  • Huge Bear’s Penis

KC oline is giving up a lot of sacks this year, 18 so far and tied with SEA for the most. I would love to see the Bears keep this trend going.

  • CanadaBear

Glad I don’t gamble on the games. Way too much crap to follow to be any good at it. Not to mention the losing money part.

    • beninnorcal

I’m with you, Canada. More often than not more folks lose than those that win. When it comes to gambling, I fall into the ‘more folks’ part. Not worth it.

The Bears already give me enough near-cardiac arrest type performances like last week’s. I don’t need monetary implications on top of that.

      • CanadaBear

I don’t follow all the teams and you have to do that to be any good at it. I can’t bet on the Beloved because they always lose when I do. I can’t bet against them because then I’m watching the game with mixed feelings. Just doesn’t work for me. Not to mention I worked in casinos for a couple of years and know just how sad things can turn out.

        • Irish Sweetness

You never bet against the Beloved C-Bear.

          • BillW

There have been times when I’ve bet mildly against them hoping I lose the bet from their winning the game. A perverse superstition that I’ve since given up.

          • Pissed Off

Sounds like a win win, I’ve done the same. Then I’m happy if they win and I get prize if they lose. Key here is small monetary bets.

      • Irish Sweetness

I saw the Bears at 9/2 on American sites this week, Ben. 4.5 to 1 in a game they should win? You can play it safe backing them +10.

        • TheBigCheesy

Why stop there? The Bears are 500/1 in a Championship they should win.

  • AlbertInTucson

    FanDuel, DraftKings, etc.

    http://www.uclick.com/client/spi/nq/

  • Sactowns#1

Yup. I like the Giants but my card has them at 7.5 so idk. Love the Bears this week. Like the Skins at +7.5 and the Raiders in an inter divisional home game and getting +5.5. I like the under in tonights game (45)
The one real head scratcher for me is the Saints being a 5.5 point dog on the road against the Eagles who stink! Idk what Vegas is seeing here that I’m not.

    • Trac

I’m scratching my head as well. Iggles on the road against the Iggles?

    • Irish Sweetness

For the later games I like NE, NYG, DEN, ATL all to win straight up. Any shockers possible in there?

      • Sactowns#1

Den might just lose to a fired up division rival playing at home. Also the Skins have been playing some pretty good football so I wouldn’t be surprised if they came in to ATL and won.

  • Sactowns#1

Sounds more and more like Alshon will be back this week…. against the 29th ranked passing defense in the league.

    • Bender McLugh

      Big game for Royal

      • Sactowns#1

And Royal was sat out yesterdays practice. It would be great if we could get all our starting WR’s on the field for one game.

        • MB30SD

          jesus fucking christo!

    • willbest

He better be out there. I need him out there in my lineup this week. Byes are happening.

  • Irish Sweetness

Solid bets there Jefe. No arguments with those.

    (8-4)

Went with a STL +10 and CHI +10 double, with a single bet on the Bears to win, 7/2.

  • BerwynBomber

The Bears line is a joke. Seems like a good bet.

I have been liking the G-Men this year (even when they started 0-2) and that line is nice. Only worrisome thing is the G-Men, even in their good years, often play to the level of their competition. Unlike, say, the Pats, who when they are supposed to blowout an opponent, often do.

  • BearDown100393

    Brought to you by FanDuel.

  • Sactowns#1

The more I look at it the more I like the Texans tonight and the under. They’ve only gone over once this year and that was on the road in a game they basically gave up on in the 2nd half. Now theyre at home against a struggling Colts offense.

    • AlbertInTucson

And now they’re saying Luck will not start.

Sounds like they’re trying to hide a shoulder separation for him.

Must be pretty bad since Hasselbeck was HOSPITALIZED a couple days ago with whatever HE came down with.

      • Sactowns#1

I sent in my bets for tonight’s game and am getting stonewalled. “I’ll let you know after lunch” Pfff. Fool I know you are trying to shift the odds and change cards on me. Hell nah!!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odPVWgw5IC0

      • Huge Bear’s Penis

osteoporosis or arthritis was acting up with Hasselbeck. his old bones cant handle playing that much anymore.

        • MB30SD

I was going to proffer a #4 strain of the left labia majora?

  • Trac

Can someone explain this wild card game the Cubs just played. I have no idea what that was all about. When did teams in baseball start playing a 1 game playoff series? I just saw that they get to play the Cardinals after one game.

    • Sactowns#1

As an Oakland A’s fan I know the agony of the one game series all too well.

    • willbest

In 1995 MLB went from 2 to 3 divisions per league and added a 1 team WC to make it even. Prior to this with all the new teams it made it really hard to make the playoffs.

In 2012 in the interest of providing greater access to the playoffs, they added a second WC. The two WC teams play off in sudden death for the right to play the #1 seed in the league.

This also has the added affect of gimping the WC team somewhat in that their best pitcher will now only be able to pitch 1 game in the divisional series. So now the Cardinals will only have to face Arrieta once, unless he is brought in as a reliever at some point.

      • Trac

Thanks will. I haven’t watched a baseball game from start to finish in almost 35 years. Just a band wagon fan when it comes to the Sox or Cubs.

messile or fourfeathers played by the boat anchor? they seem to drag things down.

Second, it is so dripping with filthy rich pretentious old money snobbery it’s disgusting. Ailand… seriously you couldn’t just use the real word? smmfh.

Lastly, once I do make my money blizarian style, my first order of business is going to be to build/buy a fucking pirate ship and attack and overrun that thing. make everyone walk the fucking plank into the ocean where due to my good graces and more civilized approach, they’ll be allowed to jump into life rafts to paddle to shore.

Ohhhh, I’m too fucking broadway to be paid millions and millions to play one of the best fictional characters ever devised again and be a hero. Ohhhhh, I’m to good of a method actor to play a tough manly guy… oohhhhhhh, ooooooooooh, eeeeewwwwww.

What a fucking drippy vagina he is. That makes me sad. I was salivating for specter… and still am, but now I won’t be able to watch without disliking that english cunt. First time I’ll ever enjoy watching a bond get punched in the face.

    Too strong?

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/08/entertainment/daniel-craig-james-bond-feat/index.html

    • The GP

You would still punch Pierce Brosnan in the face before Craig. Brosnan screams to be punched.

      • MB30SD

        I this order.

        Dalton
        Brosnan
        Craig
        george lazenby

        • Sactowns#1

You know who’s last on that list? Peter Sellers. The movie was weird but that man is awesome!

          • CanadaBear

David Niven is nobody’s idea of Bond.

          • Sactowns#1

You’re right, I guess Niven was the real bond in that film. I’d still take him, as a far more true to life version, over Craig. I’m pretty sure the 50 y/o roid head would be pretty conspicuous.

          • AlbertInTucson

Woddy Allen played “Jimmy Bond” in the first Casino Royale.

        • Scharfinator

          Dalton and Brosnan? Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh!

      • AlbertInTucson

Actually, an actor named Barry Nelson was the first to play the role of James Bond in a 1954 1 hour TV version of Casino Royal.

Nelson is also one of the pilots in the original AIRPORT.

    • CanadaBear

Roger Fucking Moore. He ruined the franchise for me. At least Craig added some life back into the series. All buffed up he looked like a genuine badass.

      • MB30SD

        blasphemy!

The Spy Who Loved Me was my first ever bond.

        • CanadaBear

That’s the thing. I grew up with Sean Connery as Bond. Also, watching Maverick as a kid James Garner was great. It was always disappointing when Roger Moore was in the show. He went from ruining Maverick to ruining James Bond for me.

          • MB30SD

I get it. He seemed a bit more soft. Obviously Connery is the one and only maing.

          • SC Dave

Yeah, but Craig looks more the part than anyone else.

The opening two scenes of the Craig Casino Royale are *the best* depiction of Bond ever. A hyper-violent bashing some dude and drowning him in a frigging men’s room sink, followed by a cold-blooded assassination of another in the penthouse of an office building. Awesome.

          • MB30SD

I actually really liked craig until i read that blasphemery!

I thought he was the best bond by far since Sean… and now this. My little heart is crushed.

        Moore. WAY too much tongue-in-cheek.

First one I saw was GOLDFINGER.

Then saw Dr. No and from Russia With love in re-releases.

        • AlbertInTucson

Shirley Eaton. One of the top “Bond Girl”s.

    • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

it’s bullshit when actors and actresses get a life and career changing role and then years later shit on that role because they have been gainfully employed , paid millions of dollars and remain relevant for years because of that role.

      • MB30SD

        Bingo!

        Pommy cunt.

      • Sactowns#1

How DARE Lee Iococa not want to make another shitty Mustang!

        • MB30SD

so you’re of the… fuck this bond shit, I want to do an off-broadway part to 40 people a night where I walk around the stage naked and shouting… ilk?

          Shitty?! Don’t make me sad.

          • Sactowns#1

Hey man if you love to do something you don’t care about the money, especially if you already have millions. The Mustangs of the mid 70’s to 90’s were most certainly dog shit. Underpowered, poorly designed, ugly… when people talk about bad design Mustang II almost always follows.

    • BearDown100393

Give the role back to Connery. One last script for the franchise. Bond single handily kills ISIS. Returns to England. And has 1 night with the Kardashians. Dies from a heart attack. RIP 007.

I would have to lay the 8.5 and take New England.

  • RenoBear

Jeffery today ‘man I really miss bring out there, of course’ ‘it’s a process’.. No. No you don’t care. As a fan, I’ve NEVER been less impressed with a players toughness or desire EVER. Somebody on the other thread compared him to the roommate who gets fat when the other healthy, fit roommate moves out ( BMarsh). This is very accurate I believe. I’ve never seen an such an ‘elite’ ‘talented’ athlete be sooooo fucking fragile and have so many soft tissue injuries. Eat right and train correctly, Asshole. I mean his fucking injuries happened during a WALKTHROUGH and after a regular practice he felt ‘tightness ‘ in his hammy.,, train, eat, and rest correctly Dickwad

    • MB30SD

damn reno. you gettin’ that 5:00 already?! hahaha

The old addage still holds my maings…

Damn I LOVE that movie. Nah man actually on a little vacation w the fam. Nice little resort near Crater Lake. But shit man I got Tahoe 30min from my front door. Seen one mountain lake, seen another. I’ll take Tahoe. Been too lazy these last 5days, haven’t properly worked out even though there’s a nice facility here, the kids been sleeping in til 8am, I’m enjoying it but going stir crazy at the same time. So then I come across that article where Jeffery says he essentially DGAF.. And fuck it pissed me off, maing! I don’t think Pissed Off read too much into it either, like there other guys are saying

  • Pissed Off

From the trib…..Jeffrey actully said the injury isn’t trying his patience because he understands that players are going to get hurt. He also said it’s a process and the season is long so he doesnt want to rush it. Reading between the lines there says he doesn’t give a fuck if he ever gets back out there but I’m sure he’s expecting a big new contract as well. And some team should be happy to pay it weather he plays or not because players are going to get hurt you know. What a fucking tool. Cut him now.

    • SC Dave

Wow, another comment just as full of bullshit as Andrew’s about how the coaching staff “absolutely loves” Jay Cutler.

Like I should give any credence to someone claiming to know what Alshon Jeffery thinks when he can’t even spell the dude’s name properly.

      • Pissed Off

You can have your bullshit opinion and i can have mine. Everyone can take the comments how they want and that’s how I see it. Tounge in cheek on cutting him but stop being a pussy and get out there as Reno said. and thanks for the spell check mr. Webster by the way this is a blog for opinions and stuff right?

        • MB30SD

I’m kinda with you on this one to be honest maing.

Fucking hate lazy bitches mailing shit in while they collect mills. Get off your fat lazy ass and play futbol ya coont!

…it’s onea the 7 deadly sins you know. Right trac?

          • Irish Sweetness

Speaking of lazy – see Jonny Hendricks missed weight?

    • Scharfinator

You sure read a lot into that. You buddies with Alshon?

      • SC Dave

            Hahaha

  • Trac

Mallet trying to do his best Jay Cutler impersonation.

  • BearDown100393

Chuck Pagano must really want to get fired tonight.

    • FourFeathers

Colts and Seahawks are victims of bad offensive lines. It will be each team’s undoing in 2015.

      • BearDown100393

Standing on the field and drawing an unsportsmanlike penalty does not help the offense either.

  • BearDown100393

FanDuel & Draft Kings must have given the signal to CBS to have Nantz/Simms rabble babble about Arian Foster’s health. And lo and behold, he is pulled off the field, sidelined and ultimately sent to the locker room. Foster looked none to please. It is obvious what is becoming of Roger Goodell’s corporation.
