Money Where My Mouth Is: Three Picks For Week 13

| December 3rd, 2015

Screen Shot 2015-09-21 at 3.01.04 PM

Had a solid 2-1 day last week without putting the slightest bit of thought into the picks. My goal every year in gambling on football is to be 10 games over .500 at the end of the season. Have some to work to do down the stretch to achieve that.

GREEN BAY & DETROIT OVER 46.5 PTS

The Lions have finally started running their offense: drop Matthew Stafford back and throw bombs to Calvin Johnson. (Surprised it took promoting Jim Bob Cooter to recognize what the entire football watching public has seen for years.) I think Detroit puts up 24-30 on Green Bay and the Packers, who’ll play with desperation, should be their equal. 46.5 is a high number but it wouldn’t surprise me if this game goes into the 60s.

CHICAGO -7 VS. SAN FRANCISCO

Explanation will be available tomorrow in the game preview.

BUFFALO & HOUSTON UNDER 41 PTS

Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel is from the Parcells/Belichick school of game preparation. What does that mean? It means he’ll look at the Bills tape and say, “We’re not going to let Sammy Watkins beat us.” And if you watch enough of the Bills you realize they are one team when Watkins is effective and another team when he’s injured/taken out of the game.

The Texans offense isn’t any good. Both teams should be in the teens.

Like the picks. Saw this article. It sums up the decline of the Bears (which we can talk about, because we are on the rise). It’s one of those annoying slide show sports mockery things. But it is still pretty good.

    http://sportsmockery.com/2015/12/10-decisions-that-caused-chicago-bears-slow-collapse-after-super-bowl/

    • Bobby Douglass

That’s mostly terrible. Hiring Martz in the first place was a horrible decision. The “let’s protect Jay with only the line when we have no one who can get open in 1 second” offense caused Jay to get happy feet.

      • Big Mike

You’re wrong. Martz wasn’t a mistake. Look at the results. Putting a shitty team on the field was the problem.

        • Bobby Douglass

Love ya man, but I respectfully disagree. Having no offensive line and relatively little speed in the skill positions… running that offense was an abomination. I place the short success they had on Jay, cause he’s kinda sorta good.

          • BillW

In general the biggest difference between Martz and Gase – as was said by many early this season: Gase runs plays based on the players he has; Martz ran plays based on the players he wished he had

Can we look back perhaps and trace Jay’s INT rate to the happy feet of which you speak? It certainly didn’t help make it better.

Gase’s offense seems to have made Jay more comfortable.

          • Bobby Douglass

Your first and second paragraphs I agree with, I think we’re on the same page. And… yeah… Jay’s happy feet didn’t help.

          • Big Mike

Yes he’s more comfortable. Fox/Gas much better than Smith/Martz. Doesn’t mean Martz was bad. Happy feet and other bad habits. Probably contributed to his Cutler’s rep as well. But his stats and the teams record with healthy cutler and martz speak for themselves.

          • Big Mike

JC is good. He made it work. Martz was a good coordinator. Best the Bears ever had until Gase. Gase could be a great coordinator. Martz/Smith problem was couldn’t adapt to their reality. You and I agree on that. Fox/Gase is a GREAT combination. They max out what they have. It’s awesome.

          • Bobby Douglass

I’m extraordinarily happy about our coaching staff.

          • Big Mike

Amen. Looking back at that article, my point was to make myself even happier about where we are. Maybe in a few years we’ll see one that is the opposite. 10 moves that made the Bears great.

        • CanadaBear

Martz was good for Cutler other than the part where he almost got him killed. Until Gase came along Cutler had the most success under Martz. He also was beat to a pulp. That Giants game reminded me of the beatings Avellini was subjected to but nobody cared because it was Avellini.

          • Big Mike

Oh man. Poor Avellini. That guy.. damn. Didn’t say Martz was good for cutler. Said he was a good offensive coordinators. 11 guys on that side of the ball.

          • CanadaBear

I hear ya! I can remember Avellini playing with water on the elbow. He had a huge sack of fluid around the elbow that the camera could easily pick up. He was horrible but what a tough bastard. I know he’s an alcoholic and his life is a mess, so I try not to pile on too much.

          • Big Mike

Maybe jail will help him come clean. It’s unfortunate.

    • willbest

Lovie firing Martz cost him his HC job with the Bears. The team would have made the playoffs in 2012 with somebody competent calling plays and Emery would have been forced to let him play out his contract.
I disagree that firing Lovie was a mistake though. The guy needed to go. A HoF Mike and an exceptionally talented Will covered up a lot of that defenses short comings.
Not hiring Arians cost Emery his job, but do you think Arians would have gotten more out of that aging defense and whatever players Emery found for him? Its been 1 year and I am thoroughly impressed with Pace’s ability to dumpster dive. Its too early for me to say New Orleans shouldn’t have fired their GM and promoted him instead, but comparing the trajectories of the Bears and the Saints, its starting to look like that is what they should have done.

      • That Guy

Emery had his bright spots as well, but it sounds like the bigger issue was his undercutting other folk’s ability to lead themselves. Sounds like Trestman had the same issue.

Emery was not incompetent as a talent guy. He wasn’t the best or the worst, but nobody in the league can run a team by himself. Look at how Pace, Fox, Fangio, Gase, Cutler, Forte, McPhee, etc. has each put those “beneath” him on the totem poll in a position to take more responsibility, not less. The best teams have a management staff – not one great player.

Lovie Smith was a great leader. The players loved him, his coaches loved him, the team played hard. Lovie’s issue was that he didn’t have the skill to field an offense. He wasn’t average, he was well below average. The team gave him the chance to find someone to coordinate for him, but he never could. And that’s why he was fired.

I didn’t think firing him that year was necessary more than any other year. But I do agree in hindsight that the team had to move on at some point to get over the hump.

        • The GP

Emery was not incompetent as a talent guy.

And you are basing this on Alshon and Long?

He was pretty goddamn incompetent. He was so keen to further his mystique as a draft guru he did off the wall, stupid things. He thought he was Kevin Costner in Draft Day.

          • BillW

            Emery = Beast!

I thought That Guy was NewBear. But maybe he’s Barb?

            EDIT
(just joking NB. Now that I posted it, it sure was insulting.)

          • That Guy

He made some bad moves, sure. He also made some good ones. He signed Cutler to a contract that all of a sudden seems like it wasn’t such a bad idea. He drafted Shea (who was overdrafted, but not a bust at this point), Long (great pick up), Fuller (also not a terrible pick, though maybe overdrafted), Alshon (great pick), Ego and Sutton (both played fine, though Sutton is no longer a scheme fit) and a few other decent guys. He also got M. Bennett for a good price, even though the character may become an issue. He got Slauson, he got Forte to sign a new contract. He got Briggs’s last deal done without a big fight.

That’s just off the top of my head. Every GM makes bad moves, every GM has draft busts. I said he was average, not great.

          • Big Mike

The Bears have depleted talent, because emery had three drafts and the bears had less talent than we he got hired. Which is pretty bad, because the last good Angelo draft pick was I can’t remember when.

          • SC Dave

The biggest failure of the Angelo – Emery era was the failure to acquire staff that could develop players. Something that Pace seems to have fixed immediately.

          • Big Mike

Picking a biggest failure is quite a chore.. Lovie didn’t like rookies. Marinelli didn’t like rookies. That’s code, for “figure it out yourselves, I’m busy over here”. How a staff develops the bottom third of a roster in my opinion is a sure indicator of success or failure.

          • SC Dave

            This looks reasonably fair.

      • Big Mike

Love the dumpster diving analogy. He’s found very good value at the bottom. Guys that got overlooked, or needed some coaching. I didn’t agree with all ten. I think we’d be worse off now had Lovie not been fired. I also know that the team wouldn’t have been a laughingstock in 2014. Arians would have been much better with that same group of men. Coaching matters. Trestman couldn’t, Tucker couldn’t.

  • Scharfinator

Damn, I cannot believe the line on the Houston game. Houston has given up 6 points in like 4 of its last 5! Definitely the under, good call.

    • Big Mike

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

  • BillW

Hey Jeff – remember when you had a feature earlier this year called All-22 tweets? Will we be seeing that again?

    • DaBearsBlog

Yea I think so. I think I will bring them back for next week. Last few weeks have been tricky with prime time games, short weeks…etc.

      • BillW

Great! Campbell’s piece on Prosinki’s TD saving play reminded me of it.

  • BillW

Biggsy almost never gets into the “drama” aspect of football. He did at the end of the Trestman nightmare and that signaled something.

Writers often do favors for sources – I wonder if his thinly veiled criticism of Black Uni today was by someone’s special request? It’s about as damning of a player you’ll ever read from Brad. As Jeff tweets – the fact that Bennett didnt’ even watch the biggest game of the year was the strongest. And Brad put that line in there seemingly as a throwaway item – but really with strong intent. Jeff nails it by saying that fact will really piss off the fans – and I have to believe it’s a set up for the fan base being OK when Bennett is shown the door.

    • Scharfinator

Fox was dismissive when asked if Bennett was upset with how he is being used.

“You will have to ask him about that,” Fox said. “I don’t know. I don’t really care. I get upset too. I think he is one of the top-five targeted tight ends in the league.”

Damn, Fox also calling Bennett out big time.

      • MB30SD

Again, I’m on the dump bennett ASAP bandwagon. He’s already lost, you don’t come back from that place.

        • Big Mike

Get something for him. Always need to replace the production. Unless you think Miller >=to bennett, than you are replacing what we thought Miller was. Which you can pick up at the TE dimestore.

          • Bender McLugh

Hands like Miller’s aren’t dimestore material. Neither are his TD celebration kisses….okay maybe those are.

          • Big Mike

My point is that it will be easy to replace what we thought we had in Miller. (A back up TE)

          • Bender McLugh

ah gotchya, and I agree. I hope he is what he seems to have become, a true TE1.

          • MB30SD

naw, there are special clauses for lockerroom cancers, of which his is most certainly one.

          • Big Mike

With strong leadership, you can tolerate a mercenary or two. Sometimes you even house break them. Bears aren’t there yet. But at some point Kyle Long will just not put up with that shit. (see kreutz)

        • SC Dave

I’m inclined to agree – most definitely.

      • Big Mike

That’s what a head coach does. Hey Bennett, I’ve got over $60 million in cap space, 9 draft picks and you’re under contract. Shhh

      • AlbertInTucson

Tough to get targets when you spend the packer game on the sideline.

        • BillW

Not even; he didn’t make the trip and never even watched the game

        • SC Dave

Tough too when you drop the ball too often.

          • AlbertInTucson

I believe I heard them say that was his 4th this season.

    • Big Mike

The instant Miller caught the 2nd TD pass a few weeks back, I called it. I was with some guys watching the game. Said, Everyone’s happy but Bennett. He’ll be bitching in no time.

While I’m surprised he didn’t watch the game, or keep tabs on the score, the emotional investment in a games outcome is greater for a large majority of fans than it is a player. Don’t get me wrong players are invested in the outcome, but their investment is more physical than emotional.
It’s emotional up to the point that it gets them jacked up to do their job, be a good teammate, keep their job, get a contract, get to the playoffs etc. It’s different when it’s your job.

I see it with the kids I coach. Parents, relatives all more emotionally invested than the players. Kids practice every night of the week for a month, 3 nights a week once games start, they do their best during the game and are usually spent. What they want is a cheeseburger. Mom/Dad want to talk about the big win, or loss.

      • BillW

I never played organized sports so I can’t speak to what you say. I can understand that a player can’t be emotionally invested (too much) else they could never be able to prepare for the next game.

But as a fan I find it shocking that he wouldn’t watch. And the way he words it, it is not even clear when he found out they won. Which makes it sound like he didn’t care one way or the other. Which makes him sound like a really bad teammate.

The locker room video shows that this indeed was an emotional result for the team.

Now I’ve heard players say “I can’t watch a game when I’m not playing – it’s too hard because I want to be out there”. THAT makes sense. The fact Biggs never even hinted that was the reason clearly shows he had a negative message regarding Bennett that he wanted to convey.

And from the comments on the board – best fans collectively I know – he accomplished that.

        • Big Mike

Bennett says things for shock value and to get attention. But what you said is true “I can’t watch a game when I’m not playing – it’s too hard because I want to be out there”.. Bennett’s never been a rah, rah team guy. He’s a mercenary. Always looking for the next thing. Julius Peppers, Brandon Marshall, Darrel Reveis, quite a few guys are about the name on the back of the jersey and not the colors of the team they play for. Maybe more guys than fans want to even know. But if they are, most keep quiet about it and/or say the right things. “bringing a championship to the fans in the city of XX”, or when they are traded/drafted “the great tradition of the XXXX is one that always inspired me”

Then you have the lifers, that get drafted by a team and spend their best or all of the years there, I genuinely believe they become fans of that team. Those are your building blocks. Long, Jeffery, Grasu, Cutler (yeah, I went there), Forte, A guy like Mcphee who is making his name with the Bears, Amos, Fuller (maybe) and so on…

          • BillW

            and so on…

            Prosinski!

          • Big Mike

            could be, could be.

          • BillW

Destined to be the next Tom Waddle.

          • Big Mike

an average sports DJ? Oh wait.. 🙂

  • MB30SD

    DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
Look at Zach Miller and you see a guy that makes it easy for fans to get behind him.

Look at Martellus Bennett. You see the opposite.

We’ve said and seen this before… he’s become my least favorite bear aside from Hester when he admitted to just showing up to collect a paycheck for 2 years. Dump his whiny useless ass ASAP. Fuck that guy

    • willbest

That being said, he was a bright spot in the era of Cryptkeeper

      • BillW

Somehow that almost seems like a negative.

      • Big Mike

No bright spots. That era is the dark ages of Bears football.

        • willbest

Nonsense. He photoshopped #6 on a black unicorn and posted it to twitter.

        • BillW

I look back and still find it hard to believe it came and went so fast. I still feel a huge amount of gratitude to George or Virginia or whoever for pulling the plug that quickly.

And it gave Bear fans the final piece of evidence to shut up the ignorant know-nothings who still say “the Bears are cheap”.

          • Big Mike

Bears haven’t been cheap in a long time. I will view the dark ages as a necessary evil, when we reach the promised land. To get Fox/Gase/Fangio we had to have emery/tresticle/tucker. Also had to get rid of Smith/Marinelli. I thought it was time for them to go, but Emery even fucked that up my not getting Arians and keeping Marinelli. Quietly I’m watching Lovie in Tampa. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for what he stands for and his leadership skills as a coach. Wish he could figure out offense a bit.

          • CanadaBear

You and I feel the same about Lovie. It was time for him to go but what followed …

          • Trac

They were cheap until they signed Peppers.

          • Big Mike

Not true. Cutler wasn’t cheap. Urlacher/Briggs all got paid. John Tait got paid, Mushin Muhammad’s contract had 10-12 million guaranteed. A lot of the time they spent money signing their own guys.

          • BillW

All within the cap that every team has.

My “are you nuts?” response to the Bears being cheap has to do with their firing coaches and GMs with millions left on contracts.

Had that discussion recently at a family get together with a somewhat distant relative who I knew was just trying to be part of the football conversation with some of us. So I was patient. Siad if they were cheap, they would have kept Emery and Trestman, fired Tucker and/or JoeD and/or the traitor OC and called that a step forward. The fact that they cleaned house completely proved they were not cheap at all. He understood and said he didn’t think of it like that.

            Then we changed the subject.

          • CanadaBear

Exactly. They always cheaped out when it came to the coaching staff. Always 1st time HC’s and a bunch of no names to fill out the staff. That all ended with Emery/Nessman. I loved the fact they were so pissed at Kromer they fired him too. Even though it cost them some money, they wanted to make a point. Good on ’em!

          • Big Mike

Excellent point. I hadn’t thought of the staff contracts they carried. Same with Lovie Smith. He had one of the bigger years of his contract left when they fired him.

          • Trac

Wow, that was like the year before. Same difference dude.

          • Big Mike

2005, 2006 well before. Not to mention the coaching contracts they’ve eaten. The narrative of the Bears being cheap hasn’t been right for a long time. Now they haven’t really been smart with some of that money.

          • Trac

Bingo mike, bingo! Nail on the head my man.

          • Trac

That’s kinda like showing gratitude to the welfare state after going on social security. Ahem.

          • Big Mike

Whoa…I’m thinking hard to line that analogy up. 🙂

          • CanadaBear

            Don’t bother.

          • Trac

            Yes, it’s a difficult though to grasp. 🙂 I agree, it’s sketchy.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

He was a bright spot in 2013. Last year he was part of the problem. He became visibly disinterested in blocking last year when he realized nobody would hold him accountable. Everybody got all gaga over the big receiving numbers, but he was much better overall in 2013.

        • Big Mike

He’s a mercenary. Looking for his next contract. Nothing wrong with that, can’t have a team full of those kind of guys.

      • MB30SD

um, yeah… not saying much right? Just seeing that guy on an NFL sideline gave me the fucking shivers last week.

    • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Bennett is the worst guy on this team because he has the talent to be the best but is not bought in to the system or with the guys lining up next to him. I mean this with all of my heart. Fuck this piece of shit. I want NFL caliber players with heart. Bennett plays with tons of pain, no doubt but he has no fucking heart. There is a big difference. Go up and take that fucking ball from lesser athletes you pussy.

      • MB30SD

        Jes. This.

  • MB30SD

Japan is #1 on my wanderlust list, and I love the *(mainstream) culture, but there’s also this weird shit: http://www.mandatory.com/2015/12/03/the-weirdest-japanese-subcultures/

    People are cray.

    • Big Mike

Not even looking. Those people are weird. Spent time in Tokyo and Osaka. Beautiful young ladies.

    • Trac

The birth rate in Japan is so low that they will eventually become non existent as a nation within the next 50 to 100 years. If you moved there, you would be doing the nation of Japan a favor. Just sayin.

      • The GP

If only somehow the NSA could help…

        • Trac

Good morning GP. Have you figured out whether or not the shooting in Cali was a terrorist job yet? Let me know when you stop playing with your balls and come to you senses. Mmmkay.

          • Sactowns#1

Well he had a muslim soundin name so its terrorism! Merica

          • Big Mike

            SMH…

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

            http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-san-bernardino-mass-shooting-suspects-20151203-story.html
The facts are starting to add up Sac. I’m going to watch this play out but I think your theory of “right wing” domestic terrorists can probably be quietly put to rest. can we agree?
It’s laughable that this is called a workplace violence incident. I was pissed at my boss so my wife and I stockpiled some fucking AK’s, handguns, bullet proof vests and some tactical gear and then raided the holiday party after someone spilled punch on my shirt??

          • Sactowns#1

I was actually talking at the gym and said “if it was just one person I would think disgruntled worker but since it’s multiple people idk” Turns out this may be the first case of someone going postal and bringing their wife along for the ride.

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

no way mang, too much coincidence with the planning and the weapons and the reports from neighbors about all hours activity and the trip to middle east and just getting married to online Qatar national then she just happens to find herself in the middle of some kind of workplace vengeance plot while raising a newborn……. Sometimes it just is what it is even though we don’t want it to be that. Some people desperately want them to be disgruntled employees so badly, some in a way want them to be fanatical muslims, some wanted them very much to be crazy right wing white men….
            That is a weird dynamic.

          • Sactowns#1

Well he worked there, was at the company party and got mad about something. Came back with his wife and some guns. Sounds like workplace nutjob more than anything else.

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

haha, so he got into an argument at a company party, left to go get his wife and to both get suited up to the fucking teeth with guns, ammo and armor, made sure to drop the kid off at the grandparents house earlier in the day and then strapped in their fucking Go Pro cameras to head back for a little shooty shoot??? come the fuck on man…..And booby trapped the fucking office with homemade bombs that they just had lying around the house like an old sticky playboy issue?

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Sac, the beauty of the internet is that you don’t even have to apologize to anyone. You can just insinuate that Trac or anyone else that doesn’t agree with your views is a racist hillbilly. Unfortunately and sadly in this case you couldn’t be more wrong. Just keep doing what you do. It’s all good.

I had to bring this up because someone at work had the same reaction to one of my coworkers last week and i witnessed an actual apology in the break room yesterday morning. Imagine that, someone was wrong and took ownership of effectively calling someone else a racist. I’m also deadposting this to save you a bit of possible embarassment.

          • CanadaBear

No terrorists. Just guys smoking weed. SMH.

          • Trac

Canada, ask yourself why you’re having such a hard time accepting the truth. This is what terrorism is. This is what it looks like. To be a good muslim they have to kill the enemy that stands in Islam’s way and doesn’t submit. It’s called Jihad. Muslims silently accept Jihad even though they may not participate.

Why is the left trying so hard to ignore what islam is doing all over the world? It’s insanity my man.

          • The GP

If you wait on me to stop playing with my balls, you will be waiting a long time.

They are so big that it takes awhile.

      • Big Mike

It’s desperately overcrowded AND old. The worst combination.

      • willbest

Utter nonsense. Even at their 1.4 birth rate there will still be 80 million of them in 100 years. That is more French than there are now. Japan will still be Japan in 100 years. And just because they aren’t procreating now, doesn’t mean they won’t later.

        • Big Mike

But the population is getting so old. Upside down. Old and crowded. That’s japan.

          • willbest

Why do you think the Japanese are at the forefront of robotics? They have decide its better to create skynight than hand their country over to the Vietnamese.

          • Big Mike

I have no idea what that means.

          • willbest

They are building robots to automate tasks that are currently done by humans so that when they no longer have the human population to do those jobs, they will still get done.

That’s a might low number to go under in the Houston game but I can see it happening. I don’t think the over will hit tonight though. The under on TNF has hit 8 weeks in a row. Idk if that means its time to start fading that trend or not but it’s pretty monumental. I certainly like the Bears this week I also like Tamp bay and the Raiders. Both are trending up and are home dogs.

    • BillW

Big difference this Thursday game though. Both teams have had a full week to prepare.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

yep, I love how they always do it like this the week after Thanksgiving. The only smart thing involving TNF the NFL does.

        • Big Mike

          Catch me up, what?

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

they schedule the TNF the week after Thanksgiving to be two teams who played on Thanksgiving, so they both have a full week to prepare. It’s intelligent.

          • Big Mike

Yep. That is smart. How much do we love having 10 days to savor the win over the packers. Fox, played it beautifully, no extra practices for players a mini break. Coaching staff had more time to prep for upcoming games (you will never convince me that some part of the coaching/scouting staff isn’t gathering intel for games besides the “next one”)

You know how many Vipers are still on the road? About none. Way too much power and the average guy in a midlife crisis had zero idea how to drive it.

      • Big Mike

I love fast cars. I’ve taking a few driving courses, Took a course with a hot lap on a track in Florida. Drove a Viper, put it back. nu uh.. too much, too hard to drive normal, too much torque, brakes way to touchy, steering set up with that much rear wheel power produced so oversteer that had to be tamed if you were even a little aggressive. Only fast car I ever drove that was as unforgiving was a mid 90s 911 turbo.

The vette on the other hand, any tool can make it go fast, turn tight. It’s an engineering marvel in that regard and a super car at 2x the price.

        • Bender McLugh

took a course many years back in MI at Skip Barber, the Viper is what they had us race around a cone circle. Did not like that thing one bit. The Formula 1 cars were awesome.

          • The GP

Skip Barber is awesome. I did Limerock.

          • Bender McLugh

three laps with the Viper, my second lap I pushed it a bit and nearly spun out, crushed two cones…….p.o.s. with soooo much power.

          • The GP

A Viper will run a 355/30-R19 and still break it loose, even soft.

It’s insane to drive. It’s cramped for big guys and that is maybe the only car I wanted to get out of shortly after I got in it. It felt like a death box.

          • Sactowns#1

My buddies step dad had 2. Wrecked the first one within a month of owning it. Got a new one, wrecked it a year later gunning it to show off while leaving the bar. That guy was such a tool. But when he had one he would take us on rides and we would feel super cool.

Thanks for answering the blog poll question about infidelity yesterday. You see I have this friend. Ya, that’s it, a friend. And he just found out that his wife cheated on him. Their marriage was far from perfect and borderline on the rocks as it was, but he didn’t want to leave her. He believes in commitment and staying true to his vows and he’s scared to death he will lose the kids in the divorce because men always do. But he also believes that infidelity and violence are the only deal breakers. So, he’s pretty sure he will be getting a divorce.

    Fucking women.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Sorry to hear that Doc. That sucks hard core. You deserve better.

      • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

you mean my friend, right? I’ll pass it along.

    • willbest

That sucks. I hope it isn’t a situation where he has confronted her already, or she knows he knows. The best outcome is to blindside them. Even better if the guy she is having an affair with has a record. he could argue for initial custody because of that. One of Divorce Inc. favorite tactic is to give initial custody to the mother and than 6 months later say they don’t want to upset the status quo now that the kids are used to it.

    • RenoBear

Damn man, hate to hear it Doc. I remember all the other stories you’ve told us. Looks like that’s definitely the straw that breaks the camels back. Feel confident, talk to a lawyer, you’ll get your kids maing. Sorry to hear this though. Fucking women

    • BillW

A coworker of mine is going through the very same thing. In fact, I think today is the final settlement or however that works. It’s been very tough on him and I tried to listen as best I could without it affecting my job. It certainly affected his and I worried he would get fired on top of everything else. All because he was trying to make sense of it all and hoped his wife would come to her senses.

Yes – she cheated big time and that was the deal breaker for him. But worse for him she is a very bad mother and yet has custody. In Illinois at least you practically have to be a convicted murderer for a woman to lose custody.

Anyway – his logical brain (statistician too) made it tough for him to accept what was a very emotional woman. Don’t know if that’s your situation at all, but the old “opposites attract” too often ignores what comes next – that the attraction is far from permanent. And it’s more likely the emotional person who gets tired of the boring logical person and looks for “excitement”.

Once that happens, it’s obviously over – and there is no logic in the world that can fix it.

I feel bad for you Doc and I hope venting a bit on this board helps a little. You sound like a very good man and whatever happens with the kids – don’t forget they will grow up and they will eventually come to understand what happened and respect you all the more.

      • The GP

In Illinois at least you practically have to be a convicted murderer for a woman to lose custody.

In Illinois a woman could be caught on video snorting coke on the dash of her car, and she’ll probably still keep the kids.

        • willbest

Well they will go to CPS while she does a 72-hr rehab. Then she will get them back.

    • Sactowns#1

Tell your friend to be strong. I’m sure he has a lot to offer the world so why waste time and effort on someone who clearly neither desires nor deserves his energies? Tell him to keep his head high and start doing the things he’s been putting off. Good luck.

    • CanadaBear

I found out my ex was cheating on me. When I asked her about it she denied it but she couldn’t look at me when she said it. I stuck it out for a few more years due to extenuating circumstances (her step dad of 25 years and both her sisters died in a 5 year span). Once I met my future bride on a bike ride, I fast tracked that divorce. We didn’t have kids so it’s not the same. Tell your friend good luck and have them visit me on Vancouver Island some time!

    • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

sorry mang, just protect the kids as much as possible as you navigate choppy waters with the attorney. It’s about your kids. They need you around as much as possible. You’ll be fine as long as you know the kids are fine. I’m hurting right now just reading it.

    • Scharfinator

      That’s brutal man.

I would lawyer up immediately. Even if your friend decides to not hit the divorce button, legal counsel is invaluable right now for him. He can get a fairly impartial view, understand the effects of a divorce, and know how to proceed for custody and the like.

As a non lawyer, I’d still tell him to keep everything written he can and back it up in a few spots. Documentation and hard evidence are the best tools in these situations.

    • Bender McLugh

Hang in there Doc……we feel for ya. Wish we could do something for you too.

EDIT: we feel for your FRIEND. my bad.

    • The GP

He believes in commitment and staying true to his vows and he’s scared to death he will lose the kids in the divorce because men always do.

Pro Tip: Document irrefutable evidence of the infidelity. Emails, pictures of SMS text, a handwritten letter between them would be golden. Never cop to stealing the information. Ever.

Give the information to your attorney. Do not keep copies of it anywhere in your home.

It can win you alot more than you think.

      • Sactowns#1

Depends. California has “no fault” divorces so a judge wouldn’t even look at it.

        • The GP

          Is Doc in California?

          • DocNitty Ellipsoids Ornamental

        • willbest

IL has nofault, but also fault. Sadly, Washington only has no fault. Although, if she contests the assertion the marriage cannot be saved, then you will present evidence of adultery

          • That Guy

IL is getting rid of fault divorces in January. And Infidelity hasn’t been relevent to custody issues for years.

    • Trac

Porn is a form of infidelity doc. It’s the hard truth my man, both are wrong. If you can find it in your heart to see your error in the marriage then you will see that there is unfaithfulness of the heart in both camps. It’s easy for a guy to lie to himself and minimize porn but the truth of the matter is that it’s not good for any marriage. I asked you if I could comment several years ago when you threw out a question about masterbating to porn and you told me “no thanks”. I wanted to help you back then even in spite of our differences but you didn’t want my help so I held my peace.

Marriage is a commitment of the heart my friend. I really do hope you can see a way to reconcile with your wife and forgive her because it’s the kids that suffer from divorce. I really hope it goes well for you Doc. Good luck.

So per Biggsy (though his report yesterday conflicted with the NFL report shown on ESPN):
Royal, Rolle sat out again today (dey boat gotta knee).
Wilson too with a foot injury he got yesterday.
Zack limited with a rib injury.

By absence of info one assumes Carey full participant again, and that interim starting TE we have as well (I wonder if anyone told him the Bears won last week yet?).

    • willbest

If Miller is out I wonder if we will see much of Khari Lee out there.

      • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Miller will be fine. I think it’s a recurring injury. They had him in the xray after the Chargers game I believe.
Hopefully Marty will ball out, even if it’s to get the fuck out of Chicago on a new contract somewhere else.

GB might give us a 5th for Bennett

          • BillW

I DO NOT want to see him there. He will definitely play well to spite us. That seems to be the kind of guy he is. I would want him traded to the AFCW so we don’t see him until 2019.

          • willbest

I was so happy Suh went to the AFCE and we did have to see him again until 2018

        • BillW

If we see another performance like the first quarter of the Denver game, the boo birds will be in full voice. Biggs article has the fans ready for that – and I think that may have been the intention.

Brad is well connected to the Bears (and Al’s Beef too). One of them put him up to that article and it wasn’t Al.

        • BillW

And yeah, I think with Miller it’s precautionary. “Limited” probably means no contact at all but still running through plays to get the timing.

  • The GP

So it does appear Fuckface Farook was radicalized and a nutter.

I’m sure this pushes Trump about 10 up in the polls.

    — From AP:

Farook and Malik also placed a “device” consisting of three connected pipe bombs at the scene. Apparently, the remote detonator failed. 65-75 rounds were fired in the initial attack. 76 additional shots were fired at officers.

    Found in the suspects’ home:

    2,500 .223 rounds
    2,000 9mm rounds
    12 pipe bombs

    Found in the black SUV:

    1,400 .223 rounds
    200 9mm rounds

The trove of weapons police discovered indicated that the pair were “armed for a second attack.”

Additionally, AP has the following account of Farook’s family history:
The records obtained Thursday by The Associated Press show that Syed Farook’s mother, Rafia, described her husband in 2006 as “irresponsible, negligent and an alcoholic.”

She said she was forced to move out of her home with three of her children because her husband continually harassed her “verbally and physically and refused to leave the home.”

She filed a no-contact, stay-away domestic violence protection petition on July 3, 2006. She alleged that same year that her husband attacked her while her kids were present, dropped a TV on her and pushed her toward a car.

    • willbest

A lot of people have 5000 rounds of ammo. Its easy to burn through a couple hundred when you go to a range, and if you catch some on sale, you stock up. Its the pipe bombs that rule out work place violence.

Also, what is not happening is just as important. Obama is acting not like himself. He has been briefed on something and its affecting the way he is communicating on this.

My guess is the FBI is desperately trying to find the guys helping in the pipe bomb construction, and the odds of the brother getting a trial at this point are probably pretty slim. He is going to disappear into a hole.

      • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

haha, dude, 1400 rounds of .223 in their getaway car…. not suspicious to you? 200 rounds of 9 is like 10 mags worth. Now if by “going to the range” you mean “going to town on civilians in the name of Allah” then yes, then were probably going to the range.

14 more for detroit by halftime?

  • Johnnywad

Erin looks like he’s gonna cry. The body language…..the mechanics…….goddam is this satsifying. I hope every 3rd down ends in a sack.

    • RenoBear

Where’s the national media going to be tomorrow? I know they would NEVER dissect Vadgers body language like they used to roast Cutty. Dang I love watching Vadgers be the whiny bitch we all know he is

      • Johnnywad

They most certainly won’t. But I do begin to wonder how long before they’ll turn on him like a weak, injured dog.

        • RenoBear

I can see this happening too. I guess he threw his receivers under the bus again this week after the bears game. I can say unequivocally that Cutty has never placed blame publicly on anyone but himself.

          • SC Dave

One of the things I’ve always liked about jay, tbh

      • WP4Life

        Amen

  • burntorangenavyblue

Refs are getting lonely already, watch out!

  • burntorangenavyblue

This is what I want for the rest of the game: Both defenses slaughter the others Offense and no one scored the rest of the night. Everyone dead or near it

    • willbest

Just so long as Eddie Lacy pops an 80 yard TD in garbage time

      • burntorangenavyblue

Haha I have Crosby as my kicker…ditto your sentiments

      • MB30SD

        FF ruins football

        • willbest

Not all that different than gambling against the spread.

          • SC Dave

            Yes, it is

          • willbest

How is “I need X to win by 4” any different than “I need X to get 50 yards and a TD”
Or “I really need X to not get more than 40 points cause I am playing the under” vs. “I am up against Rodgers, I need him to shit the bed”

          • SC Dave

Dont care. Bears win. Everything else entirely irrelevant

          • willbest

Well this week its relevant that the Lions, Vikings, Bucs, and Bears win.

          • MB30SD

            here’s my deal will.

If I played, I’d have to pick the best players. Some of those would be vikings, lions, and even packers. then I’d have to root for those cunts on a weekly basis… maybe even when they play us.

Fuck that noise. I’m a Chicago Bears fan. Fuck all other teams and their players.

          • WP4Life

            THIS.

          • willbest

Very sensible. However, if you were Jeff here and you took the over on 46.5, then wouldn’t you be rooting for more points, which means more packers possessions, which mean more chances from them to work through their ills?

          • MB30SD

sure, interesting tact. But still no.

And it’s almost as personal as politics will. Just not something I can do. Too invested in one team.

          • SC Dave

            Fucking this

        • SC Dave

          So fucking this

    • Johnnywad

Rodgers might well not exit this game healthy

  • burntorangenavyblue

I have Benny Hill music playing whenever vadgers is in. Whee!

  • Johnnywad

This is just about perfect. Detroit needs to now almost lose by Lioning themselves against an inept Packers team. Don’t want then building too big a head of steam.

    • SC Dave

      Naw.. fuck.the Packers

      • Johnnywad

Well sure, but I want both.

  • BillW

Wait, is there a game on??

  • Johnnywad

Cameras starting to feast on Rodgers’ douchery after each failed 3rd down.

  • BillW

Why aren’t they running the clock. Dumb asses will give gb momentum if they score

  • SC Dave

    A good half

  • MB30SD

Holy shit. McCarthy sounds like a fucking cave man. Is he intelligent? sounds like a box of fucking hammers.

  • BillW

Coldplay. How appropriate for the way the Packers are playing

    • CanadaBear

When I found out they were going to play the SB I just shrugged. Don’t Care.

      • willbest

Why was it an issue for anybody?

        • CanadaBear

No just a comment. Usually I have some type of reaction to the choice.

    • burntorangenavyblue

      Detroit packing heat..
      Lol

    • Irish Sweetness

Classic. How about Phil Collins MOR lobotomy music as their theme?

  • SC Dave

Goddamn (sorry Trac) this is the best blog evah… cause of all u bitches!!

    • BillW

I’m just guessing but I think you are enjoying this game with some liquid refreshments?

      • BillW

        Like I wish I was

        • SC Dave

          Work it, dude

      • SC Dave

Lol… yeah. The only thing more fun than bears wins is packers losses. Well, unlesswwe’re talking about stuff with girls…

  • BillW

Not sure if I’ve ever said this but I REALLY hate the Packers. All the Packer jerk fans have had this coming for a long time. Mr Perfect is very far from it. Who gets thrown under the bus now?

    • WP4Life

      Play caller… Clements?

      • CanadaBear

        Yep!

    • CanadaBear

Fudge fans are fickle. They turned on the drama queen for a while.

      • WP4Life

I like Drama Queen for Erin’s new nickname.

        • CanadaBear

That’s what I called Favre for years. It does fit Erin nicely!

          • BillW

            Better

  • SC Dave

Damn it, MB. Reading your comments on fantasy and i love you despite myself.

    bears… awesome.

    Rest… who gives a fuck?

    • MB30SD

whatevs dave… I know you love me no matter what.

      • SC Dave

        Well… yes, i do

  • willbest

Hopefully whatever is troubling GB continues. 17 points isn’t nearly enough of a buffer in the modern NFL

    • CanadaBear

Detroit’s been playing well of late but they can revert to the Loins in an instant.

      • SC Dave

They should do it only once more, against us

  • SC Dave

Wow… stafford #1 all time in passing yards per game

    • willbest

Would have thought that would be somebody like Drew Brees

      • SC Dave

        Brees was 2, i think

  • BillW

So they show teams that turned it around since the beginning of the season and they didn’t mention the Bears

I’m calling that a compliment. Like it’s not considered surprising

  • BearDown100393

The Cheese are dreadful deadass team. Perfect.

  • BillW

Cmon in Cheesy. We’ll hold your hand.

  • BillW

Packers. SLACKERS! Love the National media piling on

  • willbest

And the Packers offense stopped messing around.

  • BearDown100393

    So typical of Detroit.

  • MB30SD

lions, just about to lion themselves. hahaha

  • CanadaBear

    LOINS!!!!!!!!!

  • SC Dave

    • BearDown100393

  • BillW

    Arrow pointing up Cheesy

If the Packers can play the Lions a few more times

    • willbest

Their schedule is pretty cake. Next week they are on light workout against the cowboys. Then they are in Oakland to finish the season with a tough Cards game in Arizona and then back home for the Vikings

      • BillW

If they lose a second time to the Lions then no game is cake

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

they end by playing two damn good teams. Not cake at all.

  • willbest

You get the feeling Peppers cares? I must say, for 35. He is playing rather well.

    • BearDown100393

He wants a contract from a contender next season.

      • willbest

Packers are technically supposed to pay him 8 million next year (non guaranteed) doubt anybody pass a 35.5-36 year old that. What do you think he is going to get?

        • BearDown100393

          A ring.

          • willbest

So vet min with the Pats?

          • BearDown100393

That is up to him. But yeah, IMHO.

  • BillW

How are the Packers losing to this crappy team? How did they lose the first time?

    • willbest

Same way they lost to us. Not converting 3rd downs.

  • BillW

Sack Rodgers again with that makeshift o line. Maybe even a pick

  • willbest

Detroit needs a TD here. Or just 2 first downs.

  • BillW

Lions gonna be Lions I am afraid. They don’t have it in them to control the clock

    • willbest

      Single wing! go!

  • willbest

This is going to be brutal.

  • willbest

alright then… 2 more first downs and its over

    • BillW

They SHOULD have this but they will do something dumb

      • willbest

I don’t know giving rodgers any time with the ball is idiotic

  • BillW

    That somehow makes sense

  • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

That facemask call will go down in history

    • Irish Sweetness

Especially since he didn’t touch his facemask.

      • BillW

Well he did touch it. Didn’t grab it

    • willbest

Well you sort of expected that didn’t you? Refs giving the Pack 1 more chance

  • willbest

    I want to break something.

  • AlbertInTucson

Chalk one up for the “Motor City Shitties.”

  • willbest

Whats this bullshit about not letting a game end on a defensive penalty. The clock expired.

    • BillW

Makes sense. But my God how do you do anything but just tackle him low. Or let him go down. And then on the free play keep him in the pocket. Just sheer idiocy. I’m glad we weren’t fighting for first place. Viking fans must be smashing stuff

    • AlbertInTucson

Always been the rule, as it should be.

      • willbest

        nah. time expires. Street rules

        • AlbertInTucson

Then you could just break the opposing QB in half with impunity.

          Good rule.

          Stupid Lions.

  • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

That could really affect the rest of the season.

  • Irish Sweetness

Wow. Does Vadgers turn around now and say ‘Relaaax!’?

That was no facemask, but whatever.

  • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Richard Rogers turns completely around and still has enough time to go up to get it. That’s how high it went.

    • willbest

No doubt a testament to Rodgers skill, and no quit attitude.

      • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

        And a 3 man rush

    • BillW

All you have to do is keep him in the pocket. Rush 4 or 5 not 3. If he gets the pass off it’s a jump ball. You don’t need 8 defenders. DC should be fired

  • AlbertInTucson

The 3 man rush on the Hail Mary is just ignorant.

If your rush 4 or 5, the QB doesn’t have theTIME to get the ball that deep.

And I would relpace all my wide bodies with linebackers and safeties so to negate a QB’s mobility.

    Stupidity, thy name is Detroit.

    • BillW

      Up vote plus 10 million

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

the Lions also had 2 defenders-one on each sideline-posted at the 40.

And all of their defenders in the end zone were deep, so they were behind the play and couldn’t make a play on the ball.

That ball hung in the air for forever and there wasn’t a single defender there to contest the catch. HTF does that even happen?

And WTF wasn’t Megatron in there to jump over everybody and knock that ball down? He might be the best jump ball catcher in NFL history.

So much stupid from Detroit on that play.

      • willbest

The only rational explanation is the defensive play call came from new york

      • AlbertInTucson

+100 on the “Where was Megatron?” question, JW.

  • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

The spirit of the rules feels ignored as,his fingertip brushed the facemask

  • burntorangenavyblue

We can never expect the season to be helped by the Lions….EVER

    • willbest

Not until the zebra’s stop giving the packers do-overs

  • Johnnywad

And that boys and girls is why Johnnywad never bets on the NFL. Jesus.

  • AlbertInTucson

This brings up my rule change.

Two backward passes on ANY given play.

This is American Football, not Rugby.

    • BillW

But look at what happened. Ball ended up back at the 20 with no one left to lateral to. The only thing that would save them is a defensive foul. And even though it’s marginal you can’t do anything but simply make him go down

  • RenoBear

Yay the NFL’s darling little franchise got their win. I fucking hate Rodgers that little cuntbag. McFatty’s pig ass too… Rodgers is BY FAR the leagues whiniest little bitch too, bar fucking none. Fuck that bitch whore

    • Captain Obvious

Whiniest little bitch? Have you ever heard of a guy named Tom Brady?

  • BillW

Well let’s be real. Doesn’t hurt the Bears. Really hurts the Vikings. And Caldwell is toast. If the DC survives the weekend I will be shocked.

    • willbest

It actually really does hurt the Bears. The Packers will now beat the bears in common games tiebreakers if we tie 10-6 with them to end the season. And it will get to common games because the Packers now have 3 division wins

      • BillW

True. But if we finish 10 6 I’m getting drunk whether we are in the playoffs or not

        • willbest

I don’t expect to finish 10-6. But two home games against the 9ers and skins (different team on the road) and I was looking at 7-6 and 1/2 a game back in the playoff race.

      • Johnnywad

Pretty much removes all hope for anything but the outside shot at a 6 seed

    • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

      This hurts the bears badly

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

The DC is Teryl Austin, and he’s been talked about since last December as a HC candidate.

  • BillW

I hope GB fans realize they won’t be playing brain dead teams like that in the playoffs. And we kick their ass big time twice next year

  • willbest

Packers now need to lose 3 of their next 4 games in order for the Bears to jump them in the WC standings. Meaning Jumping Atlanta and Seattle are the odds on best chances we have for playoff consideration

  • AlbertInTucson

My opponent FF has Randall Cobb.

  • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

    Hoooooooooooly shit.

  • BillW

Good night gents. Thank God I’m not a Lions fan

  • willbest

Maybe I am not understanding this, but why give him the opportunity… why not rush 6 and make him throw it before people get 10 yards out and trust your 5 guys in coverage to be able to make a tackle in the next 50 yards?

    • BillW

Everyone who understands football knows that. Several of us have said it already. DC needs to be the next to go.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

6 is too risky, IMO. Break one tackle and he could be gone.

I think rushing 4 and dropping 7 is the right balance.

      • BillW

4 or 5. Not 3. That is the dumbest thing I ever saw in football. 8 guys back for a jump ball. If anything it increases the odds for PI

        • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I’d also rush from the massive edges to try to force him to stay in the pocket. Like line up my 2 DTs as DEs in a wide 9 (outside the OTs) and my 2 DEs like they’re coming in a nickel blitz.

Let him run up the middle. He ain’t going 60 yards.

  • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

I don’t blame the refs for the face mask call. The ref was behind the play, in that instance they look for the head turning when the hand is near the helmet.

Rodgers turned his head when he felt the hand near there from that direction. Sold it to the ref and got the call. In real speed and from his angle, the ref had no way to see what really happened.

That’s a damn smart veteran move on Rodgers’ part.

Related rant: I absolutely detest when athletes in any sport, for any team, do things like that to trick officials and get calls. It has damn near ruined the NBA for me. I want sports leagues to review stuff like that and make the punishments so overbearing that nobody tries it. Like I would suspend players on 1st offense if it’s obvious. Make it so the harm massively outweighs any benefit you might get.

    • willbest

Question, if it was a lineman being tackled does the lineman get that call, or is it because it was Erin Fucking Rodgers?

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

they call that pretty much whenever you see the hand near the face and the head turn. RB, WR, anybody on offense.

  • burntorangenavyblue

That “facemasking” call must have scared Detroit into attacking up front. Seriously, refs barely had the angle on that play and I could tell on live feed that the tackle was mostly a result of bringing Rodgers down by his shoulders and back. Ridiculous zebras

  • Cormonster

    • Cormonster

That was not a facemask, but that’s the modern NFL.

    • burntorangenavyblue

Article Erin Vadgers: No player shall grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull his G-string in any uncomfortable position. Note: If a player grasp Erin Vadgers G-string, it doesn’t matter if he does release it or doesn’t on time-Whining will commence and a yellow handkerchief with laces will float to the ground, thus altering the game.

  • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Hard to tell because this is such a short clip, but this actually looks like it might be a face mask. Finger hooks in and the helmet moves, the head follows the helmet.
