Conversation with Sun-Times Beat Adam Jahns [AUDIO]

| October 23rd, 2015

On this podcast, Sun-Times beat writer Adam Jahns discussed:

  • The early season excellence of Jay Cutler and Pernell McPhee.
  • What the hell is going on with Kyle Fuller and why he’d move Fuller into the slot (not to safety).
  • Whether he believes Matt Forte is in the Bears’ future plans and whether a trade is something they’d actually consider.
  • Why he believes Shea McClellin will be part of this defense in 2016.
  • The current mood inside the locker room & more!

Kinda. He was outside Halas. Oddly enough we recorded it three hour before the Ratliff shit went down.

      • MB30SD

My favorite part of your interviews (besides the interview) is the fact that you record the ring and pick up.

        • The GP

          That’s what Jeff does.

        • Trac

Some of your favorite words? “ring” and “pick up”. Yes, I totally get it. Hee hee.

          • MB30SD

            I don’t know about ring.

      • AlbertInTucson

        “Timing is everything”.

Being there for that would have been epic.

Well, gentlemen, by all means, I think we oughta have an introspective moment of silence for poor ol’ Jeremiah.

      hub is a joke.

      • BillW

Always disliked him as a commentator – condescending beyond tolerance. Yet I admired and respected him for keeping PFW alive after his Dad died.

But I guess he was very late in recognizing this internet thing wasn’t just a fad. I read up a bit more now and was surprised to learn that PFW is actually back (on the web). The original attempt at it was a surprising failure. I recall the mobile app was just the web page itself but it couldn’t resize the font. Impossible to read.

Hub I guess is still millions in debt.

        WAIT…. hub is ’85, ’85 is HUB!!!!!!

    • WP34

Maybe jags r horrible because they don’t know how to build a roster.

    • http://www.upitpuppet.com/ evantonio

Could be worse. He could bring in their old defensive coordinator.

    • MB30SD

“In fairness to Pace, Reynolds and Prosinski were clearly brought in for special teams duty and are understandable moves.

Hood’s availability, if he can contribute, is a bit more puzzling.”

Meh. If hood is decent, it’s obviously the jags GM is as shit as his team. I’m currently giving pace the benefit of the doubt. Sounds like rat did the same thing at dallas with the same outcome.

      • AlbertInTucson

The Jags just signed on for more London games until 2020.

I’m sure that pleases their fan base no end.

        • MB30SD

          they have a fan base?!?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Why, yes.

            VERY loyal.

All 30 or 40 of them show up at ALMOSTevery game, or so.

          • MB30SD

hahaha… paper bags securely intact on their heads I’m sure.

  • WP34

Hey Jimmy Clausen. I hear Ryan Pace said something about your mother. Go confront him at Halas Hall (and bring your playbook). Very funny.

  • BillW

I hope Adam can fill Jeff in on the sequence of events that led to Rat being let go. I doubt Halas Hall will provide any insights.

What I think we know –
Pace and Ratliff argued on Wednesday, but Ratliff was not cut until Thursday.

So what led to an argument so severe that police were called – and yet the player involved was not immediately cut?

    • http://www.upitpuppet.com/ evantonio

Rat was telling Pace that the Mets lucked their way into the World Series. Pace wasn’t having it.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Here’s what we know for sure:
      1) Fox told Ratliff he wasn’t fit to practice and told him to go home.
      2) Ratliff was mad, argued with Pace, and left.
      3) Ratliff came back-twice-argued some more, left each time.
      4) Bears called police to be in front of Halas Hall and parked them there for the next 1.5 days.
      5) Bears fired Ratliff.
      Here’s how I read that.
Ratliff showed up hung over (has the history of alcohol issues and a temper problem). Got pissed, stupid words were said and threats were issued. Remained pissed for too long.

      • CanadaBear

I read that he wasn’t fit to practice. I didn’t know if that meant he was drunk, hungover or high as kite. Couldn’t mean much else. If that was the case, he really is stupid. Bad enough they sent you home, go home, come back contrite and hope for a positive outcome.

        • MB30SD

that would mean you’re not a massive meathead NFL football player. SMH.

such a small % of people get a shot to play the sport of kings and make millions doing it. Shut your fucking mouth, work your ass off, kick people’s ass on the field, and collect your massive check… then retire by 36 and do whateverthefuckyouwant with the rest of your cushy, awesome life. SMHA

          • CanadaBear

Having dealt with alcohol issues over the years, I’m pretty understanding when it comes to addictions. However, don’t be an idiot. If you get caught, throw yourself on the mercy of the court and hope like hell you still have a job.

          • MB30SD

exactly. Especially when you’ve hit the genetic lottery and you’ve got one of the best jobs in the world.

          • Sactowns#1

One of my buddies has been dealing with the booze issue lately. Got a felony DUI and had to 10 days in jail. The day he gets out his wife calls me and asks me if I’d seen him. So I stopped by a couple of the bars and sure enough there he was.
So he goes on house arrest 7 days later and everything seems to be fine for about a month. He starts his community service and the very first day he leaves at lunch and goes to the bar. They breathalize him and sent him back to jail where he’ll be till mid January. Smh. Its both sad and frustrating.

          • CanadaBear

That sucks. Hopefully he will get some counselling (if he wants it) because he definitely needs some. If he isn’t open to counselling I’m not sure what you can do other than be there for him and esp his wife. Making people go to rehab (mandated by law in some places) doesn’t work. They have to want to get better. Hope he figures it out before he loses everything.

          • Sactowns#1

Yeah he did 30 days at an in patient already. Seems he just doesn’t care to stop. After his DUI he got all depressed like his life was over and there was no hope. I think he’s just giving up.

          • CanadaBear

Hope he figures something out. His wife is still in his corner, that’s a lot. If she gives up on him, uh-oh.

          • Pissed Off

Its like the Ricky Williams thing. Can’t you put the pipe down or the cork in Your bottle for afew years while you make millions. Once you retire smoke and drink all fucking day. Its so sad that these guys are so fucking stupid they can’t do it. I can’t even imagine the sacrifices I would be able to make for a few years to crush millions.

          • Irish Sweetness

I’m an alcoholic too C-Bear, but it was his choice to turn up drunk to practice. He continues to choose to drink even though he’s clearly got a problem.

          • CanadaBear

No doubt. Don’t act like it didn’t happen and there are definitely consequences for their actions. And really at this point none of us really know what’s going on. I alway liked Rat because he seemed to bring it on game day. I’m sure there are a ton of NFL players that are scary bastards when they are all fucked up.

        • AlbertInTucson

          “Wasn’t fit to practice.”

Kind of SCREAMS “Drunk” or “High”, doesn’t it?

          • CanadaBear

Thing is many of these guys drink to excess and/or smoke pot. There are programs for these guys if they want to quit. If they don’t, I get it but if they get caught or go way too far with the alcohol it’s too bad, so sad, sucks to be you.

      • Irish Sweetness

I knew it. Drugs … alcohol … same thing.

  • Trac

      • AlbertInTucson

He’ll be 35 before the start of next season so I’m SURE he was big part of the 2016 plan (He said most sarcastically).

I do not understand ANY tears being shed over this guy who was just taking up space on the bench and not on the field.

Yeah, haven’t skied since I jacked my back up surfing years ago. Skiing sadly is one of the few things that seems to aggravate it, so I switched to boarding. When I skied I pretty much just went mogul hill to mogul hill, so I probably could ski but just cruising and carving holds zero interest to me so I might as well just board.

I missed the whole fat ski revolution, and I’m kind of sad about it. Those rossis look fun.

        • WP34

What about tele …I switched to Tele about a decade ago. Besides the chair; great mt access. Tho, I will prob start board when my kids do.

          • WP34

Killer place I used to live there. Known as the last colorado ski town.

At CB: Snow can be the Best or worst in a season depending how the storms come. I would track CB snowfall before committing to a trip.

IMO Beautiful town, great skiing, good people, summer Fly Fishing is excellent.

1-6 is nuttin’. Time to get super serial when the streak hits 1-12 against a divisional opponent.

      • Trac

Everyone but Tomsula and York knew the Hurricane of sadness that would strike SF by firing Harbaugh. Couldn’t happen to a nicer franchise.

        • BearDown100393

          “Snyder West” NFL ownership.

    • BerwynBomber

Boy, did they fuck the dog by letting Harbaugh and Fangio go and hiring Tomsula.

      • The GP

By “they” you mean Jed Dork.

        https://imgflip.com/i/t0z6o

        • BerwynBomber

Thought I heard Balke didn’t like Harbaugh either.

          • CanadaBear

That was always my understanding. Harbaugh lost the power struggle in SF but definitely landed on his feet. I think he’s perfect for college. By the time he completely wears out his welcome with the player they are gone. Not to mention the money must be incredible for him at Michigan when you add up all of the revenue streams.

          • AlbertInTucson

“Hmm, tough choice. Stay in SF and work for a meddling idiot or make better money at my Alma Mater and be worshipped? Hmmm.”

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

            And isn’t he coaching Cook?

          • AlbertInTucson

            Cook is the MSU QB.

If he HAD Cook, the Wolverines are likely unbeaten at this point.

INTs doomed them against Utah early in the season.

      • BearDown100393

And dump Smith. And give Kap that contract.

        • BerwynBomber

Isn’t Kap’s contract a series of high-priced one year options? Thought I heard that. (Too lazy to google and search Sportrac)

          • BearDown100393

Probably. He’s a glorified backup. Apparently he hit some guy on the sideline with an errant pass attempt last game.

          • BerwynBomber

I saw it on the four-letter last night. Mildly amusing.

Don’t know if getting rid of Smith was necessarily a bad move — he is mediocre at best — but Kap has obviously plateaued and once teams got a handle on SF’s read option his value has plummeted.

        • AlbertInTucson

          Easy on Smith love.

They’re calling for HIS head in KC.

KC paper printed a fan tweet: “They should make Alex Smith a point guard. He’s mastered the bounce pass.”

      • AlbertInTucson

        They didn’t let them go.

        They escaped.

  • The GP

I like that Jeff tells Adam that he would begin the process to sign Forte to a 2-year deal now.

    You know, because it’s Jeff.

If Jeff were GM, Urlacher, Kreutz and Peanut would all still be here.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

      Probably Brown and Ogunleye too.

Though to Jeff’s defense, Forte is still highly productive (and NOT inj prone, knock on wood).

Those other guys were obviously over the hill.

      • The GP

You know Matty’s Fs agent will want guaranteed money for both years.

I don’t remember Ogunleye falling off a cliff when he left.

        • CanadaBear

I kinda, sorta remember he had an OK year after he left but I never heard another thing about him after that.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

You’re right, he did disappear the next year. I doublechecked his stats with the Texans and he was a ghost that year.

From what I remember, Wale was pretty done by the time he was on his way out.

And here was the skinny on Fuller/McManis before the Lions game.

“Stafford’s target distribution this season: Calvin Johnson 50; Golden Tate 39; Riddick 30; Eric Ebron 23; Abdullah 16; Bell 5; Tim Wright 3. … Johnson owned Bears LCB Kyle Fuller’s
soul in two last year’s two Detroit-Chicago games, pasting Fuller for
the vast majority of his 11-146-2 and 6-103 receiving lines in Weeks 13
and 16. Bears RCB Tracy Porter
has earned negative PFF coverage grades in back-to-back games. Things
may feel bleak for Megatron at the moment, but this is the kind of
matchup that could right the ship…Although Tate has been a fantasy bust to this point, he is coming off an
18-target game and is worth firing up as a WR3 against Bears turnstile
slot corner Sherrick McManis, who has already given up three touchdown passes this year. – Evan Silva

The rumor mill is churning and whispers of Kaepernick being traded are in the air. I think it’s more wishful thinking from Niners fans after last nights embarrassment. He would make an adequate backup but I don’t see any team sacrificing anything of value for him.

    • EnderWiggin

I trade Pickles for him. Straight up.
      Edit: If he renegotiated.

      • AlbertInTucson

I’d trade Pickles for a jar of REAL pickles.

        • Johnnywad

I’d trade him for just the jar. Empty.

          • The Yes Guy

            YES!!!!!

          • AlbertInTucson

OK. But a GLASS jar, not one of those plastic ones.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

If Chip really has balls, he’d trade Bradford and Kaep straight up. Maybe throw in a RB.

      • Trac

I never thought he would be any good and was amazed at what Harbaugh was able to get out of him.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

Harbs even made Alex Smith look good. Let that sink in.

          • Trac

He hasn’t been the same since the Bears cleaned his clock last year. Let that sink in.

          • Irish Sweetness

Nah, he was like the worst QB in the league.

      • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

Kaepernick would be a terrible fit in Chip’s offense. He needs QBs who are accurate and make quick decisions. The whole point of Kelly’s offense is to force the defense to cover the entire field and have a QB who can find the guy they leave open quickly and get the ball in their hands. That’s not Kaepernick at all.

A Chip QB doesn’t need great physical tools, he just needs to be super smart.

        • DaBearsBlog

Kaepernick’s success under Harbaugh is the greatest testament to his coaching mastery.

          That is all.

          • Cutty of Olivet Nazarene

Kaepernick also had a fearsome running game with 3 pro bowl O linemen. That set up the read option perfectly and led to that offensive success. The running game was so quick hitting……wham blocking and no time to decide who to take, Gore or Kap.

          • Johnnywad

Additionally, the notion that going to Kap over Alex Smith, and his subsequent signing, was a mistake is silliness. They played in three straight NFC Championships and a Super Bowl after the change. That’s success anyway you slice it.

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

2 NFCCG and 1 SB after the change. Smith led them to the 1st NFCCG.

            But yeah.

          • Irish Sweetness

They would have had success with a decent QB – Smith and Kap are not good QBs.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Dude, Kap sucks.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

EVERY system needs a “smart” QB who is accurate and make quick decisions.
But Chip’s offense would benefit tremendously if defense actually had to respect the QB in the read option. It would open up the run game and as such open up receivers when they have to spy.

Seemed to work is SF with Harbs.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

I guess others mused about it.

“Quarterback wins can be a deceiving stat, but even in a down 2015
season, Kaepernick is still playing just as well as the Eagles’ current
            quarterback.

This season Kaepernick is completing 61.4% of his passes, while
averaging 210 passing yards per game, to go along with six touchdowns
and five interceptions. He has also added 228 yards on the ground and
            one rushing touchdown.

While Bradford was touted as being an accurate quarterback when the
Eagles traded for him, Kaepernick actually has a better career
completion percentage (60.3%) than Bradford does (59.2%). He also has a
lower interception rate (2.0%) than Bradford does (2.4%).

So as a passer, despite the public perception, Kaepernick is just as
accomplished, and arguably more, than Bradford. Bradford might throw a
“better ball”, as some would say, but that clearly hasn’t accomplished
much so far in his career.”

          • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

yep, a running QB is good for his system, but Kaepernick as a passer doesn’t fit as all.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Do you have a link?

The only Kaepernick trade rumors I find when I search are from before the season.

    • CanadaBear

They would be selling low for sure. Don’t think they will trade him. He was awful last night. A few nice passes but all those throws in the dirt …

    • Trac

He registered a goose egg for my FF team and yes, he played the whole game.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd 4ever85! (AKA, ButchDeadLift)

If Fres actually started a lineup, you would probably lose. But you, GP and a few others essentially have a bye.

        • Trac

          Jes.

    • http://www.dabearsbeat.com/ Johnathan Wood

They’re not trading Kaepernick mid-season. What’s the point?

For one thing, their backup QB is Blaine Gabbert. For another, Kaepernick won’t be able to play for anybody else immediately because he needs to learn the playbook.

    • willbest

How could he be traded, nobody would want his contract.

To tackle some of Jeffs political nonsense.

If the NFL was serious about domestic violence, and serving its overwhelming male audience, it would shine the light on women abusers in domestic relationships, which go dramatically under reported.

Also, if I were indeed subscribing to an equalist world view I might treat women like adults instead of the “sell it to 3 year old mentality” of make it pink.

    • Trac

      Just say NO will.

  • BearDown100393

When the NFL can figure out a way to financially exploit domestic violence for profit, it will.

    • Trac

That’s weird. Where’d that come from?

      • BearDown100393

In response to a blog tweet regarding anti-violence. The NFL exploits breast cancer for its own profit. And it will find a way likewise to do the same with domestic violence. Deadspin is all over the pink campaign hypocrisy.
