Pat Mannelly Retiring From the NFL

| June 20th, 2014

Mannelly is a legendary Bear and “the namesake” of our Audibles from the Long Snapper column. Here he is explaining that decision.

Brad Biggs did an excellent job breaking the story on his Twitter feed. Here is a selection of Tweets from the Trib’s leading Bears writer:

Used to joke with Pat Mannelly the last 3 seasons or so on Fridays in the locker room, ask if he was looking forward to setting a record

He was the all-time leader in history for games played. He’d chuckle a little but he just wanted to do his job that Sunday.

K Robbie Gould: Pat Mannelly “is probably the greatest long snapper to ever play the game.”

I don’t know if Mannelly is the greatest long snapper to ever play. I don’t even know how to begin that analysis. But I know he has given sixteen years of his body to the Chicago Bears organization and that is worthy of celebration.

First long snapper to win the hearts of Chicago fans. Patrick Mannelly, you sir were a gladiator. Best of wishes to you.

  • AlbertInTucson

Kinda saw it coming. Big set of cleats to fill. Happy Trails, Patrick, and thanks!

  • DaMurph

He will be missed! Something we have taken for granted for a very long time. I wonder how many games we go till we lose one because we don’t have him anymore.

    • MB30SD

      MUUUUURPH!!!!

      • DaMurph

        MBBBBBBBBBB!!!!!!

  • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

Sad to hear it, best wishes for the snapper man…

  • Irish Sweetness

What a life he’s had so far. Born good looking. 16 year career in the NFL, injury free. Millions of dollars to the good. Retired before 40 with nothing to worry about but the health of your family. Some are to the manor born, the rest are shat out.

    C’mon the ‘Rica !

    • For your consideration….

The best part is that he wasn’t born to the manor. He worked his way into the doorway as an undersized D lineman from the Ivy League and kept his foot in the door as he became a long snapper/special teams cover guy. Then he entered the room and shut it behind him because he was looked up to like HE was the middle linebacker. He has won his entire life because he is simply a bad motherfucker.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

        Just like you!

        • For your consideration….

naw, we’re all vajeens compared to these dudes.

          • MB30SD

            I like vajeens

      • Irish Sweetness

I’d take his career over a running back’s any old day.

    • I wouldn’t say he’s completely injury free. Said his hip has been bothering him for years.

  • Irish Sweetness

So we have no backup QBS worth a squirt. We’ve got a rookie FS and an average SS at best, plus nobody behind Martellus … and no long snapper ? Let’s go Phil. Work to do, son.

    • MB30SD

jesus Irish. We have a former starter maings. Who else do you want? One of two crazy dudes that crazied out of the league? How about mike vick? smhatm

No team has zero holes. you can only patch so much in one offseason my son.

      • Irish Sweetness

“…you can only patch so much in one offseason my son.”

This is very true. Next season I’ll be expecting success. NFC Champs minimum.

        • For your consideration….

that’s happening this year Irish. It’s going to be epic. I put the farm on them going 9-7 or better. The. Farm.

          • Irish Sweetness

Well if we did I’d defintely be expecting another trophy next year. That would be sweet. Repeat champs. Data will be along in a minute.

          • MB30SD

            Irish, next year:

            Franchise FS
            Back up TE
            New CB

fuller will be a probowler, CJones will be the starting sam, bostic will be starting MLB, Vereen will be solid yet not spectacular, everyone on O will be solid still. wilson and one of the backs will step up big time and our Oline will be even better.

            BOOOM!

            #chugginkoolaidbeforecamp

          • Irish Sweetness

No DE ? Tsk. Tsk. Fail to prepare ….

          • MB30SD

oh, right. one a thems too.

    • For your consideration….

we have 2 long snappers competing currently. Some Canadian stripper and another guy. We have 2 veteran QBs competing for backup including a guy with solid starting experience albeit for a putrid Carolina team.
I agree that TE is a little weak but Rosario has shown some pass catching skill and you can’t go wrong with a nameless faceless middle of the pack mick from the Patriots as a solid backup. he won’t make it to sports center but he won’t be on sports center for messing up either.

      • MB30SD

always go with the canadian stripper who was already caught with roids. Always.

    • bearsfantillend

why stop there? we got a rookie and some useless guy named Ford as backups to Forte.

  • MB30SD

def not the italy of old.

And CR playing some nice futbol.

    • Irish Sweetness

Not only would it be a great day for Costa Rica … they put England out of the WC if they win.

      • SC Dave

And better still, there now is a chance that Italy will be eliminated too!

  • MB30SD

Wow… CR tearing it up. Impressive man.

    • SC Dave

Go CONACAF! Looking for US and Mexico to advance too…

  • MB30SD

Dude, what the FUCK was this?!?!? Are you even serious?!?!

    http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/crime/2014/06/19/erin-dnt-griffin-new-mexico-police-killings.cnn.html

How can that be real!? Kinda shocked.

    • 505 Bears

Yeah, I live like 15 mins away from where that went down. Cops in Albuq are the kids who got picked on in high school and now have a badge complex. Feds almost took over the department.

made me think of this scene.

      • MB30SD

  • For your consideration….

Sometimes you need to read Bleacher Report for mindless articles on the Bears with tons of pictures and info you already know. It was amusing to read this:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2102860-every-nfl-teams-biggest-disappointment-this-offseason
It’s amusing because our biggest disappointment is apparently losing an injured and uninspired Melton. The Vikings was letting Jared Allen walk (to the Bears). The Saints was losing their starting center (to the Bears). The Raiders was the lunacy of the Roger Saffold trade but easily could have been letting Lamarr Houston walk (to the Bears).
That’s a lot of “other team misery” resulting in crucial pieces being added to OUR puzzle.
    Vikings lose ALLEN to us.
    Lions lose YOUNG to us.
Packers lose their best O lineman while we get stronger on D line.
Saints lose starting center to us.
Raiders lose best D lineman to us.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

      Pre-Dict

Melton plays this year for Cowboys, dNd situation only and plays unexceptionally, is out of NFL next year.

      • CanadaBear

I could see the first part but not the second. Someone would take a chance on him.

    • the Packers did not lose their best OL guy. That would be Sitton, who’s arguably the best guard in the NFL. They are also getting their best OT back after he missed all of last year with a knee injury.

I think both Chicago and GB should be noticeably better this year (pending health, obviously). Two of the hardest hit teams in the NFL last year when it comes to injuries. Both-on paper-improved this offseason.

      • also, the Lions losing their best S and CB will impact them far more than Young, IMO. They have 2 promising young DEs and Jason Jones coming back from injury. DL will not be their problem.

  • DaMurph

Didnt see much mourning for the release of Izzy, guess we all knew that signing was a REACH!

    • I had no issue with the signing. But when Allen was brought in, that kind of sealed it for Idonije, I think. Must not have looked great in minicamp.

    • CanadaBear

I’m not surprised but I was hoping he had another year in him. Oh well.

  • Sactowns#1

Well have a good weekend gents. I’ll be pouring beer out at this tonight http://www.raleyfield.com/brewfest/
Then heading up to the Sierras for a little backpacking adventure. Stay safe out there and enjoy the temporary freedom.

    • SC Dave

Awesome. Where the ground is friendly, do it without your shoes. Add *touch* to the experience.

      • Sactowns#1

Oh Dave with Sierra granite there are very few places I would walk without my shoes.

  • Trac

    For you MB!

    Argentina-loc
    Ze Germans-loc
    Bosnia

I’m guessing you’ll be taking Nigeria.

  • MB30SD
  • MB30SD

Btw trac, based on yesterday’s second performances, I’ve dropped Italy and doubled down on my dark horse call for francia to get into the top 4. Germans, france, brazil, and dutch are my top 4 right now. Argentina will probably find its way into the discussion. .. with costa Rica playing the part of Cinderella.

I was hoping one of the two would step up this cup, I just expected it to be Italy for some reason. Call it a nostalgia for past paradigms

    • Trac

No joke. I counted 4 or 5 possessions England had in the box where they passed the ball around where nobody took a shot. Turrible.

    • SC Dave

France is looking really strong. When would they play Costa Rica? Those dudes are on a roll.

  • MB30SD

my goodness… the titans of futbol continue to struggle. surprising.

Bodes well for the US tomorrow?

    • SC Dave

      ‘muricaaaah… fuck yeah!’

  • MB30SD

    insane strike from messi.

    Fuck Iran.

Like I said before, looks very much like, at least in WC play… FIFA rankings don’t. mean. sheite.

    • SC Dave

Why “fuck Iran”? Because the hawks and associated defense contractors can use them as the bogeyman to secure $BILLIONS more of our tax dollars? Or is that $TRILLIONS?

Their football team deserved a draw. But they, like everyone else in the world, don’t have Messi. The best player in the world. By far.

      • MB30SD

too tired to get into a political discussion.

  • Trac

Maybe Ghana is better than I thought. Hangin tough with ze Germans.

  • Trac

Wow. What a precision timing play on Germany’s first goal. Magnificent.

  • Trac

And just like that, Ghana’s back in it.

  • Trac

Unbelievable. Ghana is up 2-1. Ze Germans are pizzed! The goalie let out a robust “shite”. Hahaha

    • MB30SD

      Shiiizah!

  • Trac

It’s time for a “Schweinstieger”. If Germany loses, a draw won’t do it for the US tomorrow.

  • Trac

    Gooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaal! 2-2.

  • MB30SD

watching this NGA v BIH game is cracking me up:

    • Trac

Hey MB? Who you taking tomorrow?

        BEL
        KOR
        POR (*sniff*)

How, to be honest, I don’t really give a rat’s ass about the first two games. I think it’s 50/50 POR pulls a spain/Gets angry and kicks ass from here on out.

        • injured defender, suspended defender, Ronaldo gimpy. If ever there was a chance for USA to grab a W and clinch through to the knockout rounds, this is it.

          • MB30SD

Agree… but there’s still the question of will they come out pissed and fighting, or are they going to fold like a spanish…uhhhh… paper.

Sometimes it’s about the hearts of men Data. All about the hearts of men.

          • I’ve never been particularly impressed with Ronaldo’s heart, though I only watch him at World Cup/Euro. Seems like a diva who gives up when the going gets tough.

          • Trac

The guys got like 60 or 70 international goals doesn’t he?

          • oh yeah, he’s probably the most physically talented soccer player in the world. But he’s also a pussy, even for a soccer player.

        • Shady

You’re just going to rage quit… again.

          • MB30SD

that was ridiculous. When I’m shooting people and grenading them but they don’t die over and over. it’s just silly.

Aight, let’s do this. Getting online now

  • MB30SD
  • Trac

Just watched lone survivor. Wish I knew what was real in the movie and what was Hollywood bullshit. The call to let them go was wrong. Our boys get to die while Hollywood glorifies stupidity. That team should have kept the afghans prisoner while they called for an airlift.

    • DaMurph

Read the book, the movie is pretty close to the book. Our warriors make too many decisions based on media coverage, lives are lost because of it and it’s a shame. War is ugly and ugly shit happens, I just don’t believe those split second decisions should be fodder for the press.

      • Trac

        Yup.

    • AlbertInTucson

“Hollywood” and “Bullshit”. Isn’t that redundant?

    • MB30SD

Saw it a few weeks ago and brought it up on the blog. Some of the cliff diving and the Afghan make up was ridiculous. .. the rest seemed reasonably believable. Sad shit.

    • Irish Sweetness

Saw it quite a while ago now. All I remember is the beards, and Pashtunvilli.

    • I haven’t seen the movie yet (wife doesn’t want to, says she can’t handle it), but I know the Seal who wrote the book worked fairly closely with the movie makers and the film has his stamp of approval.

  • AlbertInTucson

Can’t help thinking the US team will find a way to blow this golden opportunity to advance by not only LOSING to Portugal, but losing badly.

    • Trac

Paging Mr. Magoo, paging Mr. Magoo!

      • AlbertInTucson

OK. Didn’t LOSE badly but does this qualify as “Tying badly”?

        I think it does.

  • MB30SD

    Fucking korea. Smh

  • For your consideration….

currently watching Algeria v Korea. Screen shots of Algeria fans going nuts and basically forming a mosh pit of writhing aggression makes me think that the same group could attack an embassy.

  • Trac

Hey Jeff? I’ve given my wife 21 years of this glorious body, and let me tell you, she ain’t celebrating no more. He he.

(I just read Jeff’s thread line. Is that bad?)

  • Trac

I’m afraid this is gonna be a bloodbath. The US looks like they’re pussyfooting around. Tentative with no fluid passing game.

  • Trac

    This is a weird game.

  • For your consideration….

i’m pretty sure that’s the soccer definition of pulling a “Conte”

  • Trac

Defenders have their heads up their packers.

  • Trac

Gotta give the US props for their ball handling skills. They must be making MB proud. He he.

  • Trac

Does Lovie Smith coach the US soccer team? I’m pissed.

  • For your consideration….

lol, when Bradley got his pocket picked whilst fucking around you knew it was over. The moment he lost control of it I called it and walked out of the room. The groan from the guests came about 9 seconds later.

    • For your consideration….

that goal was scored with maybe 7 second left on the fucking clock. Jesus Bradley.

    • Trac

I had flash backs of the Atlanta game 5 or 6 years ago when they got the ball back with 11 seconds left. Sigh.

      • the ultimate Lovie game. Squib kick so they advance without running much clock and then give up literally the only route that lets Atlanta try a FG. Classic example of the “when you stop playing to win and starting playing not to lose, you are actually playing to lose” mantra.

  • MB30SD

Wow. What a ratfuck. The whole fucking bar went dead silent.

Hey klinsman whale in thee fuck was that dude. Smmfh

    • Trac

Why did he take out so many starters at the 90 min mark. Guys on the sidelines giving high fives with 3 mins left. Can I swear? Ooh I want to so bad. Lol.

      • For your consideration….

i have no problem with those substitutions

        • Trac

What about the high fives with 2 or 3 minutes to go?

          • For your consideration….

i don’t know if someone congratulating a hobbled Dempsey inspired Bradley to give away the ball at midfield.

          • Trac

You are not letting me bitch gracefully Johnny. Stop it.

          • For your consideration….

            lol

      • burntorangenavyblue

Yeah, definitely a botched up coaching decision…smh. And plus, it’s the World Cup….of course the opposing team is going to be desperate and make an outstanding last play….

      • SC Dave

The true fuck-up was Bradley’s incomprehensible decision to fuck around with the ball out near midfield with 35 seconds left. Why he didn’t loft a long ball towards the corner flag on the Portuguese end… oh well.

  • Big Mike

Some guy named Geoff Cameron is being blamed for global warming, the national deficit, CTE, obesity and my golf handicap. #blamegeoff

  • For your consideration….

Jeff, is somehow convincing himself right now that it’s alright that the US just played maybe the best half if not the best 80 minutes in the entire tournament, gave it away with 7 seconds to go, and just stuck a huge black dildo in their chances of getting out of the group.

    • When one gets a big black dildo inserted, it tends to make one ‘irrational’

  • For your consideration….

Bradley should have watched Mondolowski in the 92nd minute on how to make it as hard for the opposing team to come back the length of the field and try to gather the momentum to try for the equalizer.

He played well but that was a fucking Conte.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

Come on, that crosser by Renaldo was the greatest crosser you ever did see.

    #rodgersdead

    • For your consideration….

it was awesome and that is why he bangs who he bangs and has 100mil in the bank. It doesn’t mean that the play that set it up wasn’t tragic.

    • Trac

I never saw the crossover because my eyes were glued to the net that I knew Portugal was going to kick the ball into after that turnover.

  • MB30SD

    that. fucking. sucked.

Everyone in that bar was getting laaaaaiiiid right up till the last 30 seconds. Place was going fucking crazy… then boom. What a total bombass bummer. Man, there was just total shock. no one could believe that just happened. just stunned silence.

Nice call klinsman. why in god’s name wouldn’t you park the bus. jesus. still can’t fucking believe that just happened.

  • Irish Sweetness

Did Jay Leno do one of these for every car in his garage ? An impossibility I’m sure. Anyway, GP and the other gear-heads will enjoy this. Leno goes behind the stories of some of his cars.

And for MB – the Lexus LFA.

    • MB30SD

nice irish. Funny how a badge and name changes things in your mind, I am a toyota fan but don’t love lexus… and they’re the same company.

Anyway, nice car, I just can’t sit and listen to that tool leno for more than a few minutes before wanting to open handed slap him in his enormous maw.

  • SC Dave

On yesterday, I have to give props to Beasley. Outstanding game.

    • he was the best USA player in the first half, IMO (actually I’ll stretch that to best player on the field for either team). But it was more than just that one turnover in the 2nd half. He seemed to really struggle down the stretch to me with a number of turnovers and wasn’t involved in the play nearly as much as the first half.

Maybe he just got tired. Certainly understandable in that heat and humidity.

      • MB30SD

Rule #76: No excuses, play like a champion.

        • I’m not making excuses for him. Just trying to figure out what happened. I did see a stat this morning that said he ran over 7 miles during the match yesterday, more than any other US player.

Doesn’t bode well for Germany game that they don’t have much rest first. Germany is a deeper team and has an extra day rest. Don’t underestimate how important that might prove to be.

          • MB30SD

germany will come out angry after an uncharacteristically poor showing against ghana. If we thought this game was a miracle, I’m just praying for a meek goal diff situation coming out of that match.

Just hope it doesn’t get ugly.

          • I’m praying for a Portugal/Ghana draw, mostly.

Germany has the added advantage of not having to be worried about losing out on tiebreakers. They currently have a 5 goal edge on Ghana and 8 goal edge on Portugal in goal differential. So even if they lose, they are almost guaranteed to go through.

          • MB30SD

I think ze germans were pretty much a lock to go through this year, it’s really about us having a good showing against them, and hoping ghana brings the noise.

Would have been fucking nice not to have pissed away making our own destiny yesterday against a portugal side that has played really badly and totally got lucky on both goals yesterday… for FUCK’s sake! Uhhhggggg…

          • I’m hoping Portugal beats Ghana. Would take a big goal swing for Portugal to beat USA in tiebreakers. We DON’T want Ghana bringing the noise.

          • MB30SD

yeah. portugal’s down 5 on diff.

  • Trac

After yesterday’s heartbreaking draw which was comparable to any late second disaster my Bears have put me through, I halfhearted select today’s teams in the World Cup. Suck it up, rub some dirt on it boys. Sigh!

      • It’s funny. I watched the game with girls. None of them knew anything about soccer, but I thought they would like Roaldo. They didn’t (or maybe not in front of their men).
        Quote, “he’s toooo pretty.”
Quote, “His eyebrows are nicer than my”
Renaldo was so pretty, they chics no longer saw him as a sexual symbol, but as competition.
I like my friend’s remark, “He’d make a fine prison bitch” (NTTAWWT?)

  • MB30SD
  • That last second Port gave me bad Conte flashbacks…luckily, my 2 other teams are in good shape.
    Mex. Tie or win.
And the Orange Crush still crushing it. Toight.

    • MB30SD

France to take it all baby.

      #Darkhorseshocker

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

        Croatia over Mexico. In 90m

        • At least it’s not in the 94min, 99 sec mark like USA. SMMFH.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

            SMFH

        • Trac

I was really torn on this one. My heart wants Croatia to win but my brain says Mehico.

          • Alright! Trac gold locks.

Mexico is playing like Italy does traditionally. Just tight defensive. Wear-out by attrition. Good passing and counter-scores. Plus, the goalie is playing out of his mind.
I think they’re one of two teams who still have a clean sheet, though that might change today.

      • No way. U cray cray.
But I like you have a love-hate relationship with le blue.
        They’re intelligent. Cultured. non-conformist. Oh, the women…
        But they’re such DOUCHAYNES.

Thanks for keeping the Brit’s main army on the island, France.

        Signed,

        Minute men.

  • I indeed will enjoy blitz and a bong in honor of the crush.

  • Oh, and I’m late to the party.
Good bye, Pat. You were awesome, except for that one audible who everyone will probably remember you by, including a certain blog on Tues or so.
May you prosper with those nit-wits on chi radio.

  • So, can someone sum up the USA chances.
They can’t get blown out 5-0 by the Germans, AND Portugal can’t score 7 goals, right? Something along those lines?

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

If USA loses to Germany and Ghana wins 4-0 over Portugal, they would beat us out.

      • Ah. Yeah. OK. So US squeaks through barring Contean clusterfuck.

(Conetean, Contish, Contesque?…trying to make him an adjective here.)

        • MB30SD

          cunt works

  • Catching up on Bears news.
Izzy got released? Dang. Well, once we got both Allen and Houston, I knew it would be rough.
Houston pretty much replaces him as the LDE situational 3tech.
Also, does this mean that one of the other guys is impressing in camp, perhaps Washington? hmmmm

  • TheBigCheesy

There is no denying the awesomeness of that play… especially because of its instrumental influence on the outcome of the game.

However, I do argue that it has been topped by one Chilo Rachal:

    http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2012/11/19/3669546/bears-vs-49ers-intentional-grounding-call

“Audibles from the long snapper” is a classic, but I think it’s time that it yielded to “Grounding Gaffes from the Offensive Guard”

  • Alright, you c#cksukas alway post up NEW fancy-smancy cars, and ole butch has an affinity for the classics.

Is there anything more BADASS than suicide doors? I think not. (just ignore the cheezy salesmen from plainesville)

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

      Deathmobile was a ’66 Lincoln

      • At first I thought you were referring to JFK’s car.

        • John ‘GP’ Nada

How do you shift a 66 Lincoln into 2nd gear?

          Back and to the left.

      • CanadaBear

A couple of years ago I did Cycle Oregon and we had an overnight in Cottage Grove. The Deathmobile was there. The parade scene was filmed in Cottage Grove. You could get your pic taken with the Deathmobile and some props for a few bucks.

    • MB30SD

DUDE! I know why I like you now. ’64 LC is on my list of cars to buy when I get my fu money in the bank.

LOVE that car. BTW, you should have come down to party with us yesterday, was epic in PB. You know, right up till the last 30 seconds.

  • bearsfantillend

    just signed S Adrian Wilson

    • Foreals?

So much for the Vereen experiment.

      • MB30SD

don’t know about that. not exactly a ringer anymore it seems: “but Wilson was beginning to look like a situational player before the injury.”

        • Wilson SS, Mundy FS.

          • MB30SD

so again… why swap their fucking natural career-long positions again?!!

What is it with you guys always wanting to change player’s positions. I honestly don’t get it, and yes, it makes me a little angry.

            ~ kisses

          • Isn’t Wilson a SS? And I thought Mundy played both? Maybe I’m thinking of someone else.

          • MB30SD

            My apologies $. He’s 6’3″ 230 and runs a 4.45.

He was a SS in college, but I distinctly remember him playing FS for the cardinals… or at least he was back a whole lot in the couple cardinals games I watched a couple years back. Al… can you give us some intel?

But at that weight/height/speed, he can play whateverthefuckhewants in my book.

I would obviously like to see him at FS, and keep mundy, who by all accounts is a b to b+ SS.

          • I’m pretty sure Wilson was an in the box SS. And the Giants interchanged the safeties a lot. Mundy could play FS, prob make a better FS than SS too.

            Data, input.

          • MB30SD

If that is true, my sincere and heartfelt apologies for jumping the gun. Still have a little pent up frustration over yesterday’s let down.

          • I’m not 100% sure, but pretty sure. We need Data to verify. Too busy watching the games to do so right now.

          • MB30SD

            it’s halftime yo

          • True. I’m checking out some articles, but of course, the genius reporters forget to mention such little details like if he’s a SS or FS, and what kind of scheme Wilson fits best.

I do remember him being an in the box SS badass though (in the Zona 3-4). He’s a different type of S than we’re used to signing under Lovie, which makes me like it automatically. (Although Harris was an enforcer)

          • MB30SD

yeah, he seems like a kam chancellor type. big, used to be fast…

check out his career highlights section. pretty amazing career

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Wilson_(American_football)

          • EnderWiggin

Yeah, Mundy got starts at both spots for the GMen.

          • MB30SD

            didn’t they suck?

          • EnderWiggin

            yeah. including Mundy.

      • bearsfantillend

not necessarily- Wilson is coming of an Achilles injury.

  • MB30SD

    A safety!!!! WOOOOOOOW!!!

BeaUtiful second goal by Neymar btw

    • Neymar is a bad man. He’s dangerous.

      • MB30SD

that said, brazil still not looking like the unstoppable powerhouse they used to be… guess that’s a theme this cup. cept for the fucking germans.

        • Big Mike

All I know is that after watching the US give up a goal with next to no time left, I hate soccer again.

          • MB30SD

that is the exact opposite reaction you should have mike!

You should be LOVING this… all things said we are doing AMAZINGLY well and you should be very excited about what klinsman’s done to/for USMNT in the future

          • Big Mike

I don’t have room in my life for another team that breaks my heart, in such tremendous fashion.

          • MB30SD

they only get one shot with you?!? wow, you’re tough.

Ps. They’re most likely going to make it to the 16

          • Big Mike

I’ll be watching again on Thursday. 5 seconds left.. Gahh. I don’t know shit about soccer, but there was a guy that pissed down his leg on the first goal and I think he could have made a better play on the last second goal. Did Conte take up soccer?

          • MB30SD

yes, his name was bradley cameron, and howard on that last goal. brutal 3-player breakdown.

        • And the Dutch! Buya!

          • MB30SD

the dutch didn’t have a team a few cups ago… supposedly they had like a librarian, a mailman, etc…

they’ve come on strong in the last couple of cups tho.

            Viva la Francais!

  • Wilson is 34 and coming off an achilles injury. That suggests to me he probably can’t move quickly enough to be a S anymore.

    Here’s hoping I’m wrong.

    • Wilson balled. I only fear he might not be as nimble, butt he was always more an enforcer than a range cover S.
What interests me more is that he signals maybe a truer hybrid. Like MB mentioned he’s 6’3 230. He can be our geriatric version of Kam Chancellor.

      • MB30SD
        • bearsfantillend

i am not going to get too excited about this. All it shows is that the Bears are still not happy about the position even after minicamps. What i am excited about is the fact the Coaching Staff and Emery are not content and will not just go with the status quo. No more, Rex is our QB, No more Webb has so much potential and he’s our LT, no more Devin is our #1 receiver, no more Kellen Davis Types. The coaching staff and Emery are more than willing to give chances and they have admitted when they made mistakes(CD). so fucking refreshing.

          • MB30SD

            agree with both points.

I think if we can get yet another FS from the pre-season detritus we’ll 100% get one or two.

      • yes, he balled. But now he’s old and off a serious injury that typically old players don’t come back from.

        • Big Mike

Pray for the fountain of youth, with having a year off.

        • Much like in Risk and real life, Africa is just not worth it lol

          • MB30SD

all the African teams are highly skilled, very fast, with great endurance, and athleticism, but they totally lack strategy, discipline, and patience.

They get within 10 meters of the box and become a total shitshow. They all just want to score, no strategic passing or setting up optys. bad way to play WC futbol.

Adrian Wilson’s forgotten more about playing safety than the Bears current crop of safeties know, collectively. Wish there was some tread left on THAT tire. He was stud when he played for the Cards.

It’s 3-1 now, you can tell Croatia is pissed.

      • That’s what grinders do. They just frustrate teams until they get sloppy, then they strike.

  • MB30SD

Hey canada, check this out: https://patchnride.com/

    • CanadaBear

Wonder if it works? Not very often you see someone riding a Serotta in a pair of jeans. Serotta built the double-butted titanium frame I ride (It’s badged as a Schwinn Paramount). If you get one of these tools let me know if it actually works.

      • MB30SD

yeah, I’m curious enough to give it a shot. they don’t REALLY explain how it actually works.

But at $30, not a a big barrier to entry. Might be worth trying… and if it doesn’t destroy your rims with hot rubber or whatever the fuck it looks like it squirts into your tire cavity, why not.

        • CanadaBear

Yeah, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how the thing works. Have you ever gone tubless? At this point in my life I’m not switching over but my brother-in-law uses them on his mt bike and swears by them.

          • MB30SD

yeah, my old training partner was a former track pro and he swore by them. seem like a pain in the ass to me if anything ever goes wrong. Pretty easy to change a tire if you ask me. I tend to have pretty good luck (watch, I’ll have a blowout on my ride tomorrow), but last summer I had three flats in a month and got down to a 10 minute change end to end… it’s not thaaaat hard if you’re riding in nice weather and you have room to change it.

I don’t have deep dish, but I’ve always wanted them. Love how they make a bike look. Love the Zipp 808s (Hmmmmm: http://www.dhgate.com/product/dhgate/141131219.html/?utm_source=pla&utm_medium=GMC&utm_campaign=kobe1234&utm_term=141131219&f=bm%7c141131219%7c024057-Cycling%7cGMC%7cAdwords%7cpla%7ckobe1234%7cUS%7c024057003-BicycleParts%7cc%7cOSHNBM%7c0HRF%7c&gclid=CPuTgdSIkb8CFU5afgoduzMA4A), but hard to think about dropping $2-$3k just on wheels. When I get to the point where I feel like I can piss away that kind of cash on something just for me and not spend it on something my kids can enjoy, I’ll probably do it and might go tubeless then. but $3k would let me take the kids for a few nights to hawaii or maybe even a short euro trip, money MUCH better spent if you ask me. Expanding young minds and all that.

          • CanadaBear

Gotta agree. I’ve never spent a ton of money on wheels. I want them strong and reliable so never popped for the lightweight ones.

          • johnnywad

Did you just say there are $3000 wheels for bicycles?

          • CanadaBear

Oh yeah! No matter what hobby you like, you can spend insane money on it. You can get top of the line bikes for $10-$12,000.00 these days. I don’t own any but if you have a ton of dough …

          • MB30SD

            yes.

This bike costs $12-$15k. I WAAAAANT it!!!!

900 Billion dollars of equity in the housing market was gobbled up by the banks through home equity loans in one year alone during the peak of the housing bubble. The income gap is getting larger and larger and the gap between 1% ‘ers and the working stiffs like us. No way out!

    The Rothchilds have won Irish!

    • For your consideration….

your stat means that we were at our greediest as consumers now weren’t we? The income gap between the top 1% and anyone else is irrelevant. You are in fact among the top 1% of the world simply by living in America.
People need to stop parroting taglines and start realizing that everyone plays by the same tax code, just on different levels. Anyone that says any different is a fucking liar.
I have the same tax advantages as a Warren Buffet. I eat the same food and drink the same drinks as mega millionaires simply by waking up every single day.
I have the opportunity to invest or waste my money every single fucking day of my life.

You have a car payment? you’re a fucking idiot and can’t complain about 1% because you choose to pay interest on a depreciating liability.
You spend more than 1.25 per day on Food? You’re a fucking glutton because unless you’re eating like french king you don’t need every meal to be steak.
You pay 200.00 for a cell phone plan or to watch cable tv? crazy.
I could go on and on but every day people bitch and complain about what they don’t have when they could be investing every single day and with every single paycheck.

working stiffs with the chance for 401k’s and IRA’s and stock accounts that pay dividends for fucking life instead choose Tahoe’s and restaurants and waste.

      • MB30SD

oh my god… I’m part of the problem!

SHHHHHHHHHHH… wanna know the real truth?

      • Trac

Johnny, stop and listen to me. Our form of capitalism that has evolved over the last 30+ years is unsustainable. This has nothing to do with healthy capitalism. I’m a free market guy all the way but you need to investigate what’s happening man. Implosion is eminent in our economy because working stiffs can only spend borrowed money to sustain the economy. That’s a far cry from adding cold hard cash into the economy. A healthy economy needs an influx of cash to sustain it, not borrowed money. If the middle class loses ground in this area, what you get is what we see now, an increased income gap.

        • For your consideration….

putting kids to bed and will be back in an hour to discuss.

        • For your consideration….

          Trac, i’ll be brief:
The middle of the first decade of the 21st century saw incredible bubbles in the housing and auto markets. Spending on credit was at an all time high and for a period of a few years we actually bordered on a negative savings rate.

The amount of balls out leveraging by your everyday tom, dick and stan was a-fucking-mazing. Waiters with investment properties. Illegal mexican laborers with beautiful 5bd 4bath houses and pools in California. Real Estate PURCHASE closings with 40,000 cash back to send back to family south of the border (the chicago special).

This craze of spending was not to simply drive out economy to keep us afloat. It was unprecedented since the 20’s or some shit. Our economy has some broken fucking principles that’s a fact but it’s also a fact that for the last couple of decades we are now starting to experience Globalism at it’s worst. It’s inevitable that we will need to evolve. The beginning will be quite painful.

          • Our economy has some broken fucking principles

This is it in a nutshell. I saw a graph in eco that showed all the busts, booms, regressions, depressions, slumps, etc of the U.S. economy, and basically “The Wolf” can symbolize the U.S.

Marx knew it too (he was one smart cat), and he tried to create a system that doesn’t resemble a coked out broker, but like most intellectuals, he neglected to account for the HUMAN factor.

Since then, the Western system has intergrated communist safeguards so that we won’t end up on a T.J. corner turning tricks at 3am, and this is what we call Socialism.

We’re still figuring out WHICH communist programs can mess with-in a capitalist mainframe (Social Security, The Standing Military, NSA/CIA/FBI, Universal Health Care, DMV, Post Office, etc) but needless to say, it’s going to be a bumpy ride until Irish’s Tall Whites come to the rescue.

          • Trac

Marxism? As in Khmer Rouge! Disgusting concept.

          • MB30SD

            Thaaaaat’s a leap.

That was not Marxism, that was genocide by a crazy man. Come on now!

          • Trac

In order to implement Marxism, you have to destroy those that stand in your way. You can’t have just a little communism. Sorry but that’s how I see it.

          • MB30SD

Don’t apologize for your views trac… I forgive you.

            Hee hee

          • Trac

The Khmer Rouge committed genocide to usher in Marxism. Marx did the same and so did Stalin. God help us and may we never see anything close to this in America.

          • Cormonster

It was Lenin, not Marx. If you want to read a great book about what it was like to live under early communist rule, read Ayn Rand’s We the Living. There is also a great movie made about the book in the early 40’s in Italy. It’s all subtitles, but a great picture that had many of the top Italian actors of the time. Mussolini approved of the two pictures made from the book because he thought it was anti-communist. Later he realized it also pertained to Fascism and had them banned, after they were a huge success at the box office.

          • Marxism differs from Communism, but let’s not split hairs.

Yes, a lot of the government programs we now take for granted (like social security) ARE communist programs. The initial attack on such programs painted it that way (Unions too were considered communist).

Even standing armies could be considered communist, a federally funded program which can draft its citizen against his will to kill strangers.

The tea-party might be cray-cray, but they are correct when they label such programs commnistic. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re inherently evil.

Even Ron Paul admitted that although a standing army was anti-libertarian, some such programs would still have to exist out of necessity (NIH might be another one. )

Really, all the parties essentially differ on this point mostly. Goes back all the way to Hamilton arguing the U.S. should have a national bank vs every state issuing their own coin.

Guess who won that debate? Check out the commy on your $10 bill.

          • Cormonster

On the Socialist spectrum, this country is much more Fascist than Communist. It started taking form with the early Progressives like Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Robert Lafollette. It really took hold with all of FDR’s programs in the 30’s, which were closely modelled from Mussolini in Italy. We call it Corporatism today, but it’s very similar to Fascism. The government and large corporations feed off each other and distort anything that could be considered close to a free market.

          • I think there’s good/bad versions of EVERY system.

For instance, the BAD version of “Libetarianism” is often called anarchy (like Mad Max worlds).

Bad version of aristocracy = tyranny
Bad version of capitalism = plutocracy.
Bad version of socialism = fascism
Bad version of communism = marxism

I think most of us agree that the U.S. is a little too close to corporatism, where the gov/corporations seem intent on keeping themselves in power and oppressing the rest.

The real question is WHAT must be done about it? Is it inevitable under the current paradigm?

          • Cormonster

MY solution is to dramatically scale back the size and scope of the Federal Government. We as people have practically no voice at the Federal level. Congress’ approval rating just hit an all time low at 7% from the latest Gallup Poll, but damn near every one of those fuckers will get re-elected.
At the State and local level, at least the people can hold politicians accountable to a certain extent. Aside from speaking the same language, this is a very diverse country with diverse regional economies. One size fits all legislation doesn’t work. It creates divisiveness and creates a cornucopia of unforeseen problems. Then another new law is passed to “fix” that problem, which creates new problems, etc etc.
We are reverting back to a kingdom or dictatorship where the President has WAY too much power to make all encompassing laws at the whim of his pen. Federal agencies can pass write regulations that affect everyone without ever getting elected to an office, and the people have no say so whatsoever.
The size and scope of the Federal and state bureaucracies is getting so large that even the politicians can’t control or regulate them. It’s like the Chinese Ming dynasty (or one of the many Chinese dynasties where the bureaucracy essential runs the country).

          • For your consideration….

well that’s why my people gave you Jameson. Enjoy the ride. Everything will be relatively cool until the clean water runs out. Then it’s on.

          • MB30SD

            The purge?

          • johnnywad

I sold Real Estate from 2000 to 2009 to earn additional money. I saw some amazing shit. I hated the job. I finally decided it was time to hang it up when I watched a woman, single mother with five kids from three different men, and no job finance 100% of the purchase price of her home plus closing costs. Her stated income on the loan application was child support for the kids. It passed underwriting and she followed through with the purchase. She didn’t make it long before the bank took it back. Sad and stupid all at once.

          • For your consideration….

now we are seeing the blowback from shit that started in post world war 2. It will take some real work over the next few decades. The real kick in the nuts is that Geithner was able to profit from it for the last 20 some odd years. Please someone look up what Tim Fucking Geithner did in the 1990’s as part of that crew with Summers, Greenspan, etc. He helped get derivatives deregulated, which then in a nutshell, caused the bubble. Then he got hired by Obama to clean it up and be the champion of regulation and standards. Fucking american classic baby. But, i guess if it was easy then anyone would do it…and they’d do it with stated income/stated assets and a 620 score.

          • For your consideration….

lol, don’t get me started on “realtors”. 6% rips on the fucking purchase price???? That’s boiler room shit. With no actual tests or accountability, just one of the greatest lobbying forces this side of big tobacco and big pharma.

          • Cormonster

My cousin was a mortgage broker / real estate north of Chicago (Lake County) in the early 2000’s. He was distraught with his job when talking to him at my brother’s wedding reception. He was looking for another job because he said what he was doing was totally unethical. He knew most of the people would be bust within five years. Good for him that he quit and went back to school. Basically said it was a racket.

          • johnnywad

He was right Cor. It is a racket. Next on my list is appraisers. Some crazy shit going down with appraisals right now.

Le French’e MB! You’re going with Europe’s bitch? I’ll take that action. Hee hee.

    • Mexico defeated them too. Global biatch.

MB likes them; therefore, Le Bleu will be annihilated by Algeria or something.

      • MB30SD

        that hurts… bastard.

And btw, Algeria played a damn well

        • I would LOOOVE to see Algeria and France play.
That’s what I love about WC soccer. Lots of old bad blood, like when zee Germans play the Brits.

            Fucking krauts

    • MB30SD

yep. they were strong once trac. The force was with them.

It’s a fun little darkhorse bet. I think ze germans, followed by the home team, followed closely by the dutch are odds on easy picks. It takes a real man to pick the french in any battle. Hahahaha

    • Paul Stuart

Yeah it’s a very sociologically relevant flick.

      • MB30SD

        Thanks Paul

        • Paul Stuart

no worries dude, it has sentimental clichés and is almost a “chick flick” on the surface, but it proves contextual and realistic. It shows insight as it subtly portrays a developing trans-humanist/transcendent society (more the psychology than physiology) where it is common for people to use a ghost writing service for personal heartfelt messages to their nearest and dearest – a near future homogenisation of lifestyle etc…

          • MB30SD

well look at fucking you paul. you’re like the new Gene Shalit

  • For your consideration….

I’m not sure WIlson’s achilles will be ready to go by camp. He was an impact player back in the day. Dude is jacked out of his mind. 6’3 228 I believe.

    • AlbertInTucson

Sigh. We all still remember the Orlando Pace gamble.

      • Cormonster

At least he hasn’t been handed the job yet. He will have to earn it.

      • It’s different though. If we MUST, we can roll with Mundy/Conte/Vereen.

Plus, I don’t think Pace was getting vet min.

Maybe more like Archuleta. But Emery isn’t all in on Wilson like Angelo with Arch.

Basically, Emery stuck his hand in the 99cent bin and got the best product for the cheapest price. If it works out, it’s a bonus.

Pace and Archuleta were Angelo’s version of Allen/Houston.

        • Cormonster

Those were Lovie’s boys from his days with the Rams. I could be wrong, but didn’t Lovie have a much bigger say in player personnel and the draft after his new contract following the SB in 2006? That’s around the same time that Angelo’s drafts started to totally suck. I thought Lovie got a lot more control after that contract.

          • You are correct. But Angelo was still supposed to be the GM. Needless to say, I’m glad they’re BOTH outta here.

        • AlbertInTucson

I disagree with the Archuleta comparison. It was already obvious he stunk and he had lost his job as a Redskin before Lovie, who’d had him as a Ram, inflicted him on Bear fans.

      • bearsfantillend

FUCK! Bringing up Pace reminded me of the Brandon Manumaleunanalaeuna, why the fuck did we give that fat fuck a 3 mill/yr contract!!!!

        • MB30SD

          Lovie smith and Jerry angelo.

          Need I say more?

  • IF Wilson makes the team (big IF), it signals the mindset of the Bears office, and mine.

That the NFCN is getting back to being black-and-blue.

The Pack still have Rodgers, but fat Eddie is now totting the rock in an attempt to keep Rodgers upright. They’re getting back some Olinemen too.

The Vikes still have AP, and just drafted a game-managing QB. Guess what they’re going to do? Pound the rock.

Lions are still pussies, but last time I checked, Bush ran all over us last year (then again, who didn’t?).

Plus, looking at possible playoff contenders, 9ers and Seachickens are power running teams.

Wilson can come in on sub-packages. On 3rd-and-1, a 6’3 230 SS won’t need to run like he’s 23. Wilson/Mundy on those short yards situations. Call it the “tank” package.

    Today’s matchups.

Costa Rica-they’ve more than earned their spot.
    Uraguay-Will they return to form.
Ivory Coast-they will advance with win MB.
Columbia-too good to not pick but if Ivory Coast loses, Japan could sneak into the next round with a win.

    • Shady

      Here goes nothing:

I’ll take England to beat Cost Rica.

Italy and Uruguay to play to a draw.

Ivory Coast to beat Greece and

      Colombia to beat Japan.

      • MB30SD

        very good shady!

    • Bender McLugh

I can’t stand Ivory Coast, they play the dirty South American style, flop flop flop and maybe score on a penalty….boo Wendy Testeberger!!!

    • MB30SD

Costa R – is way too much for an English side that wasn’t good and that doesn’t care any more

Italy – I think Uruguay is probably the better side this cup, but I’m loyal and think the italians have enough pride to step up and claim the spot for the round of 16

CIV – Because they’re waaaay too fast and athletic for the greeks… and greece just plain sucks

Columbia – Japan has been totally unimpressive and col is the much more complete side.

        • I actually don’t mind a little bad boy in Dlinemen. They should be mean and instill the fear of god on QBs. Then again, the Rev was super clean, but I bet QBs shit their pants when LT was roaming more than the Rev.

But yeah. It’s insane that someone looks like he’s Luke Cage (GP there) but can’t fucking put it together. Doesn’t make sense. Oh no, I’m beginning to sound like Penis Dilfer!!!

Real per-capita GDP has tripled in America since 1950, and 23X in China. Inequality is a major issue in both nations. From the mid-1920s til 1940, the share of income going to the top 10% was 45%, then falling to 33% until the late 1970s; by 2006 it had reached 50%. However, the greatest income gap is not between the 1% and the 99%, but within the wealthiest 0.1% of Americans. The 70 richest members of China’s National People’s Congress have more wealth than all of America’s members of Congress, the Supreme Court, and our president and vice-president – combined.

Last August Alan Greenspan (lifelong Ayn Rand devotee), made a forceful case on ‘Meet the Press’ that America’s economy has become ‘very distorted.’ High-income individuals, large banks, and major corporations have experienced ‘significant recovery,’ the rest – including small businesses and most of the labor force have been left stuck and struggling. Greenspan concluded that were now seeing ‘two separate types of economies.’ Greenspan, of course, if not the first to draw this conclusion. Citgroup reported in 2005 that ‘the World is dividing into two blocs – the Plutonomy and the rest.’ And Larry Summers, not known for criticizing free markets has said ‘for the first time . . . focusing on redistribution makes more sense than focusing on growth.’

The financial crisis and its long, dismal aftermath (a multi-billion-dollar bailout and Wall Street’s swift reinstatement of huge bonuses to bankers who helped cause the crisis) now supports fears that these elites display inordinate political influence which they’re using for their own self-interests. Today’s super-rich are creating a nation unto themselves. There is also a growing sense that American businesses that don’t internationalize aggressively risk being left behind. French bankers in Hong Kong, Russian moguls in London, and American entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley have more in common with each other than their countrymen. They’re not sympathetic towards supporting today’s high-paid American middle class. Closing factories in America’s Rust Belt while opening new ones in China’s Guangzhou – maybe we’re moving closer to global egalitarianism idealized by Karl Marx. Today’s innovators in America turn out to be more effective job creators outside the U.S. than at home. Apple’s 2006 iPod employed 13,920 in the U.S. and 27,250 abroad (less than half in China). Further, more than half the American iPod jobs were relatively poorly paid and low skilled. Instead of people moving to higher-wage countries, jobs are increasingly moving to them. That is what is up.

I know that a lot of people are wrapped up in the world cup and even I found myself looking forward to and watching the whole US/Portugal game. With that being said, with all of the new additions to the Bears and the second year of the offense and the Trestman regime, I am really excited about this season. • MB30SD

check out the email I just received. I don’t know where I signed up for this, but I get sporting event offers once in a while. check the one I just got:

    Hi MB30SD,

I wanted to let you know that we have this rare opportunity of getting a Chicago
Bears Suite at Soldier Field Stadium in Chicago.

One of our clients cannot use his suite for the Thursday August 14th game vs.
Blake Bortles and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He is very
    motivated and will entertain offers!

It is a 20 Person Suite at $6,500.00 (original cost was
    $13,000.00)

Please let me know as this will not last long!

    $6,500 / 20 = $325 per person.

    Who’s in?

    • MB30SD

      oh fuck… August 14th?!?!?! Just realized it’s fucking pre-season. Baaaaaaaaaaa…. never mind.
