Final Practice Game Day Thread

| August 28th, 2014

Stoke's Peter Crouch has received support that he is worthy of a place in England's World Cup squad

What, if anything, can be gleaned/enjoyed this evening?

  • Do the Bears currently have a kick returner on their roster or are they going to be scouring the waiver wire this weekend for some speed? (I’d like to see Senorise Perry given a good run back there tonight.)
  • Hey, you get to watch Jordan Lynch carry the ball for the last time before he’s buried on the practice squad for the 2014 season!
  • David Fales can follow Matt Blanchard and Caleb Hanie as fourth preseason game darlings: quarterbacks who thrive against third-string defensive units.
  • Pat O’Donnell is playing.

I will be watching the game live tonight and responding on Twitter. You can follow me on Twitter by CLICKING HERE or just watching the right rail of this page.

  • Doc Hamstring

First to say I’m torn between hoping Fales looks good (so he’s not a wasted pick) and looks bad (so he doesn’t get poached off the PS by another team).

    • Trac

I’m afraid Fales will look good enough to make the team but be crappy enough to screw us when the time comes. I see him as nothing more than practice fodder.

    • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

Uh, we’re not starting a practice here. There’s already a resident doc.

      (kidding)

      (or am I?)

      (I am)

      (But am I really?)

      • CanadaBear

Now I’m confused. Will we have to check for vasectomy scars to ID the real Doc?

      • Are you having a “Fight Club” moment, Doc(s)?

Oh, P.S. Join my FF league!

        • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

          FF is the Devil.

I am the real doc. I’m guessing Hamstrings balls are either fully functional or not visually pleasing.

          • haha We need some Doc!
We need one more. Draft tonight. Johnny, GP, Shady, etc already waiting.
As evil dead says, join us…

          • For your consideration….

just draft your team real quick, then go back to your bike porn and just let it ride for the season….

          • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

Shit. I forgot all about the bike porn. Thanks Johnny!

          • For your consideration….

            i’m here to help

  • Big Mike

    Just this
    18-16
    Fendi Onubun
    Armando Allen
    Demontre Hurst
    Joe Anderson
    Trent Edwards
    Harvey Unga
    Josh Lenz
    Terrence Toliver
    Tom Nelson

Players mentioned in last years 4th preseason game on ESPN’s recap.

    • Big Mike

Without looking, do you remember who won?

      • I want to say Joe Anderson and Toliver.
Forgot about the annual Unga Bunga appearance. Wasn’t he on the practice squad for like 4 years?

    • GPLDAN

      Unga Bunga!

  • Barb UMihai Mar

They have bigger problems at blocking or tackling on ST. When the KR has to break 2 tackles at the 15 yard mark how can you judge them. I think finding a good KR/PR is important at a mental level because it could boost the morale of the unit like it always happened with Hester (hey, we have Hester back there… let’s give 150 % or ourselves) and for consistency (we found our Man), but that’s 25 % of the job.
The ST are important for those men blocking or tacking because it’s going to determine taller part of the roster. Lane, Scott, Bass, Jones, Green, Franklin, Mulligan, Rosario, Washington. If these guys can’t bring it on ST how can you keep them on the roster even if they are useful at their position ?

    • if they trust their guys are healthy, I could see only 8 OL on the active roster, with 2 on the PS. That’s a pretty big if though.

      • Barb UMihai Mar

No way they go with 8. It’s 9 all the way.

        • they did 8 for a good portion of last year. If their guys are healthy, why go 9? You only dress 7 on gameday anyway.

          • Barb UMihai Mar

            Injuries and NFL standards.

  • Trac

I predict the Browns will expose Fales weak arm. Can a I be right this one time please? He may be accurate but he needs space to throw the ball and I think Cleveland’s D is too good for him to have any consistency completing med to long rang passes tonight. I predict a bad game from him.

  • Peanut FTW

Best QB of the final preseason games, who is cut probably ends up a St. Louis Ram. At this point, I wouldn’t care if we lost Fales, I am really happy with where we are QB-wise. I think Claussen is a perfect backup and young enough to develop into the next starter or at least carry the team a couple years until we get the next one.

I think STs is the only thing really worth watching. Hopefully the guys are in the spots they’ll be in, some things get cleaned up; and we look like an actual NFL special teams unit. That and not getting any lineman hurt will be my hopes for this evenings ‘game for the final 2 roster spots’.

    • Big Mike

It would be great to somehow get something for Fales if he has to go.

  • beninnorcal

I was hoping Fales would stick and unerstand he probably won’t. The reason is probably dumb to most of you guys but I’ll never forget.

In April during the draft, My wife, me and two friends went on a Striper/Halibut charter here on the Bay. Had a blast, drank all our beers, and caught two 22 lb halibut(best fish I ever tasted later that evening).
Capt Tom of the ‘Wild Wave’ was excellent. When the subject turned to football and the draft he told us about a kid named Fales outta SJ state and how he(Tom) was friends with the Fales fam. He said he’d seen David recently and told him ‘Don’t go all big-time on us regular folk if you’re drafted’

    • beninnorcal

I went home that afternoon and saw our Bears had drafted this fella when we were out there talking about it whilst fishing. I thought it was wierd but cool. I’ll root for him where ever he ends up, even if it’s the CFL.

  • beninnorcal

So I’ll be watching Fales this evening. Curious about Lynch as well.

    • Big Mike

Lots of curiosity. As a coach, I love game 4 of the pre-season. As a fan, blah.. My coach eyes watch the interior line play on both sides of the ball. Last year Khaseem Greene had a big day. I also put myself in the shoes of the guy who is getting his first, last and only NFL game time. It’s a bitter sweet time for those guys. They know where they stand, in one sense they made it to the top of an incredibly difficult mountain. Let’s be clear, there are no “bad” football players playing in game 4 of an NFL pre-season game. Each one of these guys lit it up, or at worst was a big contributor in College and likely the best player on the field in HS.

      • Scharfinator

I don’t watch the line that close, but knowing who is on the bubble is probably the most interesting part of all of the preseason for me too. Seeing if guys can just get enough done to make it onto the team or not is pretty cool to watch.

        • Big Mike

It’s hard to focus on the line. Even veteran coaches find themselves following the play. That’s one of the reasons I like the pre-season. Don’t care about the play, get to watch technique. Last night, the Bears (soon to be former Bears were pretty good run blocking, but were simply over matched by the 1s and 2s of Cleveland).

  • I don’t even think Lynch ends up on the practice squad. I think Perry does, and why do you keep 2 RBs on the practice squad when you already have a rookie on the roster?

As to kick returner, I think it’s Williams or Perry. If Perry can win that job, do the Bears keep 4 RBs or cut Draughn? That would also be a clear way to put Lynch on the PS.

    • Shady

You keep him around to have a guy who can simulate the mobile QB in practice. That’s what I’ve been hearing at least.

      • Peanut FTW

I like that thought, just not sure you can afford the spot when you have 2 semi banged up starters and one banged up backup on your OL.

    • Peanut FTW

I think your right, Perry probably takes Lynch’s spot on the practice squad unless he can prove enough to stick on the main squad. The Lynch obsession is cute and I understand it but he is still a project RB and when the other option is a natural RB, it would be awful hard to keep the project guy.
I hope Al Louis-Jean clears cuts and makes the practice squad, great size on that kid and he’s really young. I think he’s a Peanut replacement in a year or two. People seem high on Trice if you want a defender to look at tonight, I can’t get over the fact that he’s only 5’8″.

      • For your consideration….

        “Lynch obsession is cute”
        #footballracism
So it’s not cute to put Perry, a 6’0 190 lb undrafted free agent running back on the practice squad but it’s cute to put a 6’0 220lb athlete that can play quarterback and running back and was in the Heisman race on the practice squad? He’s not some 5’9 white WR charity case.
If anything, that’s exactly the type of guy I want on the 10 man practice squad so he can develop for a year. If he doesn’t get huger, faster and awesomer then cut his honky ass.

        • Peanut FTW

They are both undrafted, and both 6′ and I don’t know that 25lbs or so is going to be the deciding factor on a rookie , 3rd string at best RB. The cuteness factor for me had nothing to do with his being white. They only really want him because he was born in Chicago and attended college in Illinois. Combine that with the fact that Perry is an ACTUAL RB who played running back in college, has 3 or more years of pass protection and receiving experience and Lynch is a project, gimmick RB who was a rushing QB in college. Lynch is good at running the ball and that’s it, lost on STs and PP because he’s never done those things. I like the kid and I wouldn’t care if he was purple with blue dots, it’s just that we have one project on the team as is and one is more than enough.

          • For your consideration….

ok, here’s one thing I do like about Perry. He had a pretty recent ACL tear and came back looking strong. Maybe a year on the practice squad will make him even more effective as a young, cheap backup.

          • MB30SD

my biggest issue with lynch is actually speed… or total lackthereof. In a real game, against Ds like the saints, 9ers, and seattle, that kid would get destroyed before he got 2 yards. Slow don’t work in the NFL maings.

          • Scharfinator

You don’t think Lynch being the 3rd placer for Heisman might imply he knows how to ball, do you? Or at least win?

          • bearsfantillend

            nope.
tim Tebow, troy Smith, Matt Leinart, Jason White, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, Danny Wuerffel, and the list goes on of previous winners that didn’t do shit

    • Bender McLugh

Do you really think Draughn is the odd man out? He’s been looking good

      • no, I don’t think they’d cut him. Risky to keep both backup RBs as rookies. But if they decide they need to keep Perry for ST, who do you cut? If you keep Wilson on the active roster, you need 5 other WRs, so can’t drop a WR.
        Only 9 total DBs (so 5 CB/4 S)? 6 LB?

        • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

Fuck Wilson, he hasn´t showed anything that is worthwhile yet and if Holmes show progress and Morgan sets his place as a 3rd. WR. I´ll keep Perry…Provided he can handle the returns.

          • The coaching staff likes Wilson. It’s not really fair to say he hasn’t shown anything yet when we never got a chance to see him this year. By most reports he looked pretty good in camp.

          • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

He is like C. Washington too talent to being cut but unproductive in the field. besides the team was made to win now. and there are many holes to fill as to drag a “deathweight” in long road. is my opinion.

          • again, tough to say he’s “unproductive on the field” when he got hurt before having a chance to be productive on the field this year. He was drafted knowing he would need a redshirt year. Can’t judge until we see what he does/doesn’t do this year.

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

I think It´s time to take a pic of Lynch in his last game as Bear.

  • Big Mike

I gave a talk each year to my 8th grade team. Game 4 of the pre-season is an interesting time to share these stats.
There are 1,100,000 HS football players. At all levels of college competition there are 65,000 players, about 1/2 of whom don’t see the field. In the NFL there are 2,000 jobs (including the practice squad)
    1,100,000
    65,000
    2,000
Play the game because you love it. Play every game as if it were your last. Put everything you have into every rep you take.

    • Peanut FTW

That breakdown gets even more depressing when you start to look at position levels. Do you make a kid a FB anymore in college or do you just use an Hback/TE combo and bring in a reserve DE in a pinch because you know there are maybe 8 spots for a true FB in the NFL. Some kids don’t make the field in college because they were miscast in HS and have a later start than everyone else. Tough.

      • Big Mike

I don’t think its depressing. Coaching at the youth level it adds perspective for coaches, players and parents. Do this because you love it and want to compete and try to get the very next level. From being on the team to playing, to starting, to starting and playing specials, to JV, to Varsity. Incremental steps. Get better. Enjoy the ride, the game and how much you enjoy it will tell you when you are done.

To your other point… Look at Jordan Lynch. Then think about how many Jordan Lynches there are in HS. Maybe hundreds of HS QBs that have probably given up their best shot at playing in College, because they aren’t college grade QBs. But they could have been college level football players.

        • GPLDAN
        • Peanut FTW

The numbers alone I guess aren’t depressing and while I agree there are kids that would take the “love of the game” stance from those numbers; it is possible that it is a seed for the “do whatever it takes to get to the next level” mentality. When it becomes depressing is when you look at the way some kids are shuffled through HS and college with barely passing grades or have suggestions of taking PEDs at such a young age simply to compete for the 1 in 700 opportunity jobs that you are talking about. I would not want my son given numbers like that to even hint at the fact that he would need to do whatever it takes to make the cut at the next level.

          • Big Mike

Interesting take on why you wouldn’t want your son to know those numbers. I offer the #s as a reality check, primarily for parents. I’m also preparing them for HS, when the only answer to the question “Where do you want to play? “, is “on the field”.

With regard to PEDs, I’m sure it happens in HS but this is really a college and NFL problem. In my opinion those are young men calculating a risk/reward scenario.

  • FF Alert: Need ONE MORE. Draft is tonight, but I can post pone it
Since it’s a private league, need your email, any email really, to send you a request. Email me pronto at
    toxicgnosis@gmail.com.
    Thxs.

    • Super Sammy

      Is it a live draft?

      • Live draft? As in, you must be present to bid (auction), yes. Though I do think they have options on that as an owner.

    • GPLDAN

I got this message in my email.

This is a reminder that your DBButchers! draft is scheduled for August 28 at 8:30 PM ET, but your league is not yet full. This is because MB is a chicken shit.

      League Name: DBButchers!

Be aware that if the league is not full at least one hour before the scheduled draft time, your draft will not be held and you will have to reschedule for another time. So, you know who to blame.

I still want to sweeten the ot with a little friendly wager. 1st place gets a Bears item from each of us. Last place wears a Fudge jersey for a day.

        • Trac

I’ve got a sweaty ball bag from the Fridge. Does that count?

      • MB30SD

        Hahahahaha… motherfuckers!

No more sext pics of the girls I’m nailing for you, jerk!

    • Shady

I’m changing my team name to “MB30SD is a huge vagina”

      • lolz
Btw, OSO You’re the only one from the Public League that didn’t send me your email for the new all DBB Private League.
Don’t want to leave you out in the cold, so hopefully, you read this.

      • MB30SD

I would prefer, “MB30SD is a gaping, weepy vagina”

        …you know, if I get a vote.

    • There’s plenty of other DBBers mysteriously absent who are FFers, too.
      Tobi, DYL, Murph, Doc, etc.
Seems like more of a ghost town lately, so calling all DBB FFers…

  • As for the Lynch speculation, didn’t we scoop up Draugn off the garbage heap? I think we can safely return him there. Not that he’s garbage. He looked decent, but I’d much rather keep Lynch or Perry.

Ideally both, but unfortunately Carey’s draft status saves him.
Supposedly the Packers were wooing Lynch before we scooped him up. Don’t be surprised if they snatch him up after cuts.

    • Peanut FTW

I don’t know what the Packers would do with him. They have a more crowded backfield than us. Maybe they allow him to go back to QB and develop all year to see what they have come the offseason as a #3qb but I don’t really know.

    • MB30SD

you just said you’d rather keep a goofy white running back who’s 215 and runs a 4.8 40, over a guy like perry.

      Is today the apocalypse?!?!

      • Well, if it were up to me, Carey would be cut and we would keep Perry and Lynch, in that order.
We just need a hammer. Hammers don’t have to run fast 40s, just need short burst acceleration + mass. I doubt Gore or Marshawn run faster than white Lynch right now. Lynch also seems like an all around athlete, so could be a prime candidate to mold for blocking, etc on sp.
Perry really intrigues me esp since he can play specials (and has college experience playing specials). He seems really fast – like a one cut slasher.

        • MB30SD

uhhhh, for the record, Skittles ran a 4.46 at the combine. Let’s say he’s drastically slowed up since then, he’s still 200ths faster than lynch, who’s only 215. Not like the guy is a fucking tolbert.

          • For your consideration….

Perry makes Lynch look like Tolbert.

          • For your consideration….

but Perry had an ACL about a year ago and could still be recovering to a degree. i’m sure the bears will make the right decision and with our WR’s and TE’s it won’t even matter.

          • MB30SD

            this

          • MB30SD

perry is a professional RB. Lynch… no so mu.

      • For your consideration….

I’ve watched these preseason games. Carey has no impact whatsoever in the ground game and can’t block for shit.
Draughn seems serviceable but by no means noticeable.
Perry looks tiny and gets fucking drilled into the ground with ease and has shown nothing regarding blocking but caught a ball or two out of the backfield.
Lynch hits holes hard, moved the pile and trucked the shit out of some dude. he’s straightline slow but looked just as quick on the runs if not quicker than most of those guys and ran with reckless abandon. i’d have no problem keeping him over one of the other no names. It’s all about who can play the most specials.

        • MB30SD

yes he’s quick… but I bet I could have gotten some yardage against the fucking 5th stringers homie was in against…. and I’m probably still faster than that dude.

          • For your consideration….

you can tell the Bears don’t really like Carey at all and are probably like, “what the fuck, this is not who we thought we were getting…”

        • +100
          That’s what I saw.
All those other guys have more experience at HB, but that didn’t make them look head and shoulders above Lynch. Besides, HB is probably the easiest position to learn. That’s why a lot of ROYs tend to be HBs.
Naturally, they ALL need to learn pass protection, but we all know Forte is going to be in 90% of those situations.

  • Peanut FTW

If the Pack keep Flynn as a backup, I really hope Rodgers gets hurt, then Flynn plays well while he’s hurt. That way the Packers could trade the same guy twice, I wonder if thats ever happened.

    • beninnorcal

I hope they keep Flynn, simply because if/when Rodgers goes down, I don’t think Flynn is a very good backup at all. Minus that one game a few years back when he was the best QB ever. For one game.

      • MB30SD

for some fucking reason that shitweasle is always pretty decent when he comes in for an injured rodgers… happened a couple times last year too,

  • CanadaBear
    • beninnorcal

I just don’t see how our defense could have gotten worse than last years. So on to the real games to find out.

    • Trac

Yes, I could have written this article. I’m concerned that our D will be turrible still.

    • Big Mike

Best Quote “What the Bears have now is the recipe for a 9-7 season. A freaky game
gets you to 10-6. A blown coverage gets you 8-8. This is all part of the
      fun.”

      • For your consideration….

i’ll be laughing at all of you when we are 11-5 or 12-4 and you’re all amazed and making excuses about why it happened.
        Super Bears Super Bowl

        • Big Mike

I hear you brother. What I liked about the quote is it points out the randomness and the small margin between 8-8 and 11-5

          • For your consideration….

that is true. Thin line between disaster and success in those situations.

          • to have the best shot to win championships, you need to get to the point where the randomness goes between 10 and 13 wins. Then you’re consistently in the playoffs, where anything can happen. Get there often enough, and sooner or later things break your way.

          • Big Mike

Excellent, excellent point. Profound. I believe the Bears are building to that level. Right now they are 8-11 range

          • For your consideration….

i see what you are saying but injuries across the board seem to probably have the biggest impact.
I can’t see anyone ever getting the randomness that high in the NFL because of inuries and free agency. The Patriots came close but they haven’t won the championship in a decade even though they are in the same division as the Dolphins, Jets and Bills. Utter Dogshit.

          • For your consideration….

that’s 6 victories a year just in the AFC East.

        • AlbertInTucson

I would LOVE it if you’re able to laugh at me come January but I just don’t see 12-4, 11-5 with that early season schedule gauntlet to negotiate thru.

  • I know there’s been a lot of hand-wringing on here about the ST units. I think they’ll be just fine.

    http://dabearsbeat.com/2014/08/28/dont-panic-about-special-teams-just-yet/

    • MB30SD

I agree… I think we all got so used to toub’s excellence that we balk at anything less. That said, DC needs to prove he can shape things up and just not have big shit happen. I’d be more than fine never breaking one as long as we don’t get one broked on us, or a block, or a lot of fumbles, etc…

In fairness ST takes the longest to gel because it’s majorly a frankenstein unit made of parts for other units.

      • Trac

I could live with a better D and weak Specials but if both are bad again? Then it’s fugasey. ……….forgettaboutit!

        • the ST were not weak last year! They were very comparable to 2012. Took a little time, but among the best in the NFL from week 5 on last year (Podlesh’s shitty leg excluded). I expect similar this year.

          • MB30SD

I think we HAVE to be better with Pat OD… at the very least we’ll have better starting position after most punts… we can’t not right?

            Also, fuck Devin Hester.

          • CanadaBear

Because Devin was responsible for all those shitty punts. The reason we were OK on ST’s last year (in the return game) was due to Devin. Hate him all you want but he was still good last year.

          • MB30SD

thanks… I will. Dude’s a fucking moron and I’m glad he’s off this team. For good or bad.

          • johnnywad

I disagree Cbear. Outside of the Minnesota game, he was pretty awful.

          • CanadaBear

Check his stats. 3rd in PR avg and 5th in KR avg. I know he fair caught way too many balls last year but he still performed. We’d be going nuts right now if our return game was at that level.

          • Trac

I can’t see how specials can’t be weak with a shitty punter. Podlesh hurt us bad last year.

          • johnnywad

I still don’t see how its possible to have a shitty punter. Aren’t there more than 32 guys in the world that can kick the shit out of a ball for $500,000 a year?

          • MB30SD

I thought POD is the fucking man… and Jeff’s secret manlove?

          • johnnywad

He is. And he is. I don’t know why every team in the NFL doesn’t have a dude that can just kick the shit out of a ball. It must be harder than I think it is. That said, my neighbor’s cat can punt better than Adam Podlesh. And that cat will play for free because he loves the game. So why do we have do burn a sixth to find a punter with a big leg?

          • AlbertInTucson

I dunno JW, APod couldn’t flip field position and I saw way too much “Bobby Watters Disease” evident in Hester, i.e. not fielding even punts that he could/should have, even if only to fair catch and not let them roll another 10-15 yards.

    • Guest

Best quote “What the Bears have now is the recipe for a 9-7 season. A freaky game
gets you to 10-6. A blown coverage gets you 8-8. This is all part of the
      fun.”

  • AlbertInTucson

Blogfather Tweet: “Tickets for tonight’s Bears-Browns game are hot. You can get seat in a no booze section for $3.09. For $4.00 you can sit in a booze section.” And for $2 you can stay home.

  • Trac

Who wants to share some strateegery on drafting in an auction ff league. Never done one before and I’m on the verge of back away from the ledge.

    • I’ve only ever done mocks, but from what I’ve seen and heard it’s all about balance. You don’t want to blow your whole wad on only 1-2 players, but you also don’t want to get a bunch of $10 guys and miss out on studs.

    • Big Mike

Back off now, before you cross over. With all due respect, Fantasy Football players usually annoy the crap out of me. Nonsense like “can we turn the Bears game off, so I can watch my defense”, or staring at their phone on watching their fantasy stats, while a real live Bears game is on.

      • Trac

Oh I would never do that. Wink wink.

      • MB30SD

exactly. that’s why I refuse to play here and with my buddies in the real world. Ruins the game.

I’m a fucking die hard Bears fan… I don’t want to have to root for a fucking viking or a packer or any other fucking team’s players, because I don’t give a flying fuck about any other team but ours.

        • But you don’t have to draft anyone you don’t like. You can still like and root for players on other teams without it affecting your Bears experience.
The first year I played I drafted MegaTron. He blew up, and I won that league basically on his back.
The Lions still won like 4 games that year. If anything, FF forces ppl to pay more attention to what’s going on across the NFL.
But it can change the way you watch games, that’s for sure.
I LOOOVE the RedZone channel, and it was created for FF.

      • For your consideration….

real FF players are tools. I just picked my team then let it ride for the season and checked it once a week. Join up Big Mike

So 20 years ago I was a junior in HS. My girlfriend at the time was this super sweet and funny little punk rock girl. She had a freckled face, bright blue eyes, a slight frame and a front tooth that was slightly crooked, all of it giving her a spritely look. She was a couple years older and was waiting to head off to Berkeley for her first semester. She got a job at a record shop and made a little extra cash. My birthday was coming up in the begining of September and she gaves me my birthday card. It had a connect the dot diagram inside and when completed it spelled out NIN. She had gotten me two tickets to the NIN show.
Just last night I saw NIN and Soundgarden play here in town. 20 years ago it was a sold out show, last night it was about half full. 20 years ago the crowd was young and beautiful. Last night it was a bit older and pretty haggard. 20 years ago I made my way through the crowd with this little 90lb gal on my shoulders. She’s married now, traded in her punk rock dreams for a husband and a baby. It’s a surreal moment when you look around and realize how the world has turned.
On a side note it was a really good show. Cornell can still hit those high notes and NIN was 90 min of non stop energy.

    • For your consideration….

memories of GF’s and great concerts……oh to be young again with no cares in the world.

    • AlbertInTucson

“…a bit older and pretty haggard.”

For the record, I was no where NEAR there last night.

    • Cormonster

That sounds like a great show. I’m a big fan of Soundgarden, but never seen them live. I did see NIN at the first Lollapalooza at the World Theater in Chicago. I had never heard of them before that day, but they blew me away. The next day I went to the store and bought Pretty Hate Machine. They put on a great live show.

  • Big Mike

I’m done with off-season, OTA, Mini-camps, training camp, pre-season. Just let’s get to the good stuff. Geez.. how the NFL has mastered the build up..

By this saturday, 32 teams need to cut 22 players each.

That’s 704 men out of work, some of which still have elite skill. Loaded teams like the Seahawks will put some good players on the street.

Our shopping list is not done. It doesn’t take alot to learn Tony Flammeta’s position. Safeties can be had. This roster is not good enough yet.

    • I know we’re going to scoop up some of the left-overs. I just wonder if we specifically target SP teamers, or go for defensive depth (obviously not mutually exclusive).

    • They’re not finding better safeties than Conte or Mundy on the street, they’re not cutting Vereen, and they like McCray as a STer (and borderline starter, apparently). I have a hard time seeing S moves made.

I could see them grab a TE or DT. Otherwise they appear pretty well set. I’d like them to grab a LB, but realistically they have too many young LBs they have invested in to make that happen.

      • The Pats just traded away Mankins for a 4rth. Anything can happen.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a team with a new HC purging to remold the team in his image flat out makes a surprise cut, or is up for a trade.
I think we’d be able to get a lot of Safeties for a 4rth, if it came down to it.

        • guard is a lot easier to pick up in a week than safety. Also have to consider mental part of it.

I expect maybe one move at the most, most likely at DT. Emery has worked hard to build quality depth, so they’re getting to the point where they don’t need to grab castoffs from other teams. Now it’s more hoping other teams don’t grab some of our castoffs so we can get them on the practice squad.

          • Who ever Toub casts off, we should sign immediately.

          • Big Mike

I disagree about what’s easier to pick up.

        • For your consideration….

          lol, Brady was not happy.

          • AlbertInTucson

            Can you blame him?

        • AlbertInTucson

Mankins refused to take a pay cut.

          Twice.

          • Barb UMihai Mar

They didn’t trade him for that. They have key players that need re-ups. Think Devin McCourty and Nate Solder.
They now have 4 mln dead money into the next 2 seasons. Mankins had 6,5 mln salary. So even if he would have said yes to a 50% pay cut (which is insane) he would have had a 7+ mln cap hit each year. Still wayyy out of their comfort zone for a 32 year player.

    • Barb UMihai Mar

Well you have to trade if you want them. I’d trade a 5th rounder for the best 2 cuts o the Seahawks and Patriots. These are the 2 that have the better depth in the league.

  • Is Christian Jones still on the team? hmmmm

    • I expect he’ll play a lot tonight. But I’m not sure how much they’ll want to play Bostic/McClellin to keep getting them reps.

      • I always wonder about the 4rth game. If they play Jones a little, does that mean they’re trying to hide him? Or If they play him a little, that could mean they don’t really believe in him that much and want to give other guys a look.

I would play both Bostic and McClellin a lot, esp if Johnny Football is there since he can also extend plays with his leg, and I imagine his playbook will be bootleg heavy, which is a definite weakness for both.

        • GPLDAN

If Jones doesn’t get heavy minutes at Sam, they are going to cut him. He didn’t play much against the Jags or Hawks, so if he isn’t in heavy rotation tonight – he gone. He’s not – as far as I can see so far – on specials, so he isn’t going to be there over a guy who is.

          • I still wonder if they’re gonna try to sneak him onto the PS.

    • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

      sadly, he will be history…

  • And on “As the Jerrah Turns…”

ESPN reports Adrian Peterson called Cowboys
owner Jerry Jones in June to tell him he was interested in playing for
Dallas “at the end of his tenure with the Vikings.”

“Well, I understand, Adrian,” Jones reportedly
told AD. “I’d like that, too … Well, I love your story. I love your
daddy’s story. I’ve always respected what you’ve been about. I’ve always
been a fan of yours.” Peterson is from Palestine, Texas, which is two
hours southeast of Dallas. It’s unclear if the call constituted
tampering, but Jones believes it does not. Now 29, Peterson is signed
with the Vikings through 2017, but is unlikely to make it to the end of
    his deal.

    • AlbertInTucson

Smells like tampering until you factor in that AP initiated he contact.

In Blogfather’s most recent radio interview he talked about not caring “if O’Donnell kicked the ball out of the endzone every time”.

Cue Lee Corso: “Not so fast, my friend.”

Even when A-Pod DID pin the opponents deep, last year’s Bear defense EXCELLED at giving up long, killer scoring drives:

4 of 90 yards or more.

    13 of 80-90 yard range.

20 in the 70-80 yard range

That’s 37 (and some in the high 60s I didn’t include in the breakdown) total and 2+ per game including the 87 yarder that doomed their season in week 17. And oh, BTW, several were racked up BEFORE the avalanche of injuries that ravaged the defense. They weren’tt all TD drives but the vast majority were.

Bottom Line: If this year’s defense can’t improve, markedly, on tlast seasons horrifying statistics, it won’t matter if the new punter is the second coming of Ray Guy.

    • MB30SD

jesus, those stats are so depressing…. and disgusting for a bears d

Blogfather Tweet: “Bears second and third string defenders should let Browns score a bunch tonight. Why? More kickoff return opportunities the better.”

    Nuts to that.

Some of those 2s and 3s will have to see the field in the regular season. They need to demonstrate that they will be assets and not liabilities.

    • Shady

Albert, would you do us the honor of joining the official DaBearsblog fantasy football league? You get to come up with an awesome team name. Yours could be “Burma Shaving points” or something else incredibly clever. You’ll get to build your team by bidding on players in an auction format, so you can feel like a boss when you drop your wad on “your guy”. Plus it’s a good away to follow the league. Just send an email to our buddy Butch and he’ll hook you up with your official invitation.

      • AlbertInTucson

Flattered to be invited Shady but I’m just not up for “Big Boy” FF.

        I play in 1 league.

        It’s EXTREMELY basic.

We draft this Saturday. There are no roster changes until mid-season so we use “Team” QBs and kickers so no matter the injury situation you have a kicker and a QB.

2 QBs, 2 Ks, 5 backs, 6 receivers and 1 optional guy who can be a back or a receiver but is always your final pick of the draft.

We don’t draft defenses or special teams.

Tight ends & wideouts are all “receivers”.

We can play A QB, K and either 3 backs and 2 receivers or 2 backs and 3 receivers.

VERY limited yardage bonuses. 1 point at 100 yards for backs and receivers and 250 yards passing for QBs. Then 1 point ever 50 yards thereafter.

It’s basically TDs and FGs. Payers get face value for TDs and FGs, QBs only get 3 points for a TD pass. or 1 for a conversion pass. Kickers get 4 points for 50 yard or longer kicks.

I don’t want to have to cruise waiver wires every day or need a calculator to keep score.

In this league you can score 25 points and still win, or 50 points and still lose.

It’s as basic as you can get but it’s all I care to handle these days.

I do thank you for the invitation.

  • FF Alert (Jebus, I feel like I’m putting flyers on car windows).

OK, I postponed the draft til Sept 2, Tues 8:30PM EST.

That should be enough time to find ONE DBBer. If not, I might know of a Potato Skin and Whiner fan who wants in, but obviously I’d prefer all DBBers. If you guys know somone in person who wants in, let me know. Shoot me an email.

Like they say in Highlander…there can only be ONE.

Bills WR Watkins hurt in 23-0 loss to Lions
    http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/recap?gameId=400552058
“The Bills might have lost more than the game because rookie receiver Sammy Watkins did not return after reinjuring his left ribs in the first quarter. The first-round pick was hurt on the Bills’ second possession, when he was struck in the side by linebacker Ashlee Palmer while running a slant route.

Watkins briefly attempted to stay on the field before jogging to the sideline. He was attended to by team doctors and trainers before being escorted to the locker room. Watkins was held out of a 27-14 preseason loss to Tampa Bay last Saturday after he initially hurt his ribs a week earlier at Pittsburgh.

Buffalo dropped to 1-4 and has failed to settle the backup quarterback spot. Jordan Palmer went 9 of 22 for 73 yards and three interceptions in making his debut two days after being signed.”

  • Peanut FTW

Well.. final thoughts after the game.
    Holmes – made the team.
Al Louis-Jean – looks young but hungry, still like the kid a lot.
Trice – kid is always in the right spot and takes great angles but he is so damn small.. I dunno.
STs – still scaring the shit out of me, I really hope that there is a night and day difference in a week because we will be embarrassed if not. We need to kick every time for a touchback or we could be in trouble. Now Robbie is missing FGs, ugh.
Fales – I don’t think the kid clears waivers. Good presence and accurate, he sets his feet well, just needs to learn timing in the pocket and not to stare down his receivers. Between his performance and Holmes and Bellamy’s performances, I think you consider sticking Marquess on IR to keep Fales on the roster for a bit. Maybe after a few weeks he clears but Im fairly certain that he doesn’t clear today.
Lynch – I found out there are 2 extra spots on the Prac Squad this season, so I am going to flip my attitude and say one of the 2 xtra spots should be his.

    • Scharfinator

Do you think we will try to keep Bellamy? Does he contribute on ST at all?

      • Peanut FTW

I think he would clear waivers, though the Bills seem to be stealing anyone we cut and they just lost a wr so… there’s that. My only hang up with Bellamy is that he’s not real big or real fast. He kind of reminds me of Earl Bennett honestly, I think he is a practice squad player.

  • Peanut FTW

Oh and I know it is meaningless, but I hope they get this stuff right in the season; on Johnny Footballs 30 second scramble and then throw to put them at the 8; one of his lineman pretty apparently gets beyond the LoS prior to the pass, should have been ineligible downfield. My concern is that they are so damn focused on their new points of emphasis that they forget about the other rules once the ball is snapped.
