DaBearsBlog’s Five Favorite Songs of All-Time

| July 7th, 2014

Because this is the only down time in the football season unless your football players are getting themselves into trouble, DBB is going to have fun. After a long discussion over the holiday weekend on great music, I decided to compile a listing of my five favorite songs of all-time. If you don’t want to read it or listen to the tracks, well then, you’ll just have to do something else.

#5 Randy Newman, Louisiana 1927

#4 Sam Cooke, Bring it Home to Me

#3 Polka of the Setting Sun / Reel Antoinette, Ken Kolodner

#2 Tom Waits, Closing Time

#1 Bruce Springsteen, Thunder Road

Won’t play on my iPhone. Do you work for the NSA?

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

Do you have Youtube as an app installed on your iPhone?

        • Trac

Yes but incorrect format shows up. Like I said last week, “I hate this IPhone”.

Da Biggsy mailbag has some meat to it. Like an Italian Beef dipped in Aus jus with extra peppers.

Unfortunately I can’t check that link out without a sbscription. Bummer man, was really looking forward to reading about the beloved.

      • CanadaBear

Go to Biggsy’s twitter feed. He posts a link to all his mailbags. It gets around the pay wall.

    • mmmmgood.

Jeff, check out this version from Sam Cooke Live at the Harlem Square Club. King Curtis is on sax. The entire CD is killer. The actual song starts at 2:40 but the intro is bearable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkLZ_pVwU3k

    • Trac

Is this based on what you saw from the Bears last year?

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

I am trying to look at rosters and evaluate talent levels and decide if I think the Bears will step up or step back. I think the Lions take both games from us this year, I see a split with the Pack, us taking the Vikes but the Panthers, Niners, Pats, Saints? Come on – those are all playoff teams and we didn’t make the playoffs last year. Cowboys want payback.

Like I said, after PS I will revise this (hopefully upward) but is the D going to lift up from a suck-ass POS to a middle of the pack D? I need to see them play first.

        • Carolina has no WRs or OL. Tough game, but eminently winnable. I also think ATL is a winnable game. They have zero pass rush, which should make things pretty easy for Cutler. But their O should be able to score pretty well too.

Dallas is perennially overrated, should have a worse D than a unit that was comparable to CHI’s last year, and is in the cold in December, where they have struggled in the past. (NO at home in DEC helps in that regard too, though I agree that NO should be the favorite there at this point).

I don’t see them getting swept by Detroit again. I guess that’s possible, but most likely is a home and home split.

I see 9-10 wins as most likely. Brutal road schedule makes things really tough. D should definitely be better this year though. I expect run D to be top 10 and pass D middle of the pack, which leads to an overall middle of the pack D or slightly better D.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

I expect run D to be top 10 and pass D middle of the pack, which leads to an overall middle of the pack D or slightly better D.

This is optimistic and predicated on the idea that Allen and Houston can generate edge rush and the tackles will step up. After that week 3 PS game with Seattle, we will know a LOT. Cutler and the main O will play the whole 1st half against Seattle’s 1st team D. It will be generic, but we will see if the O line can open holes against the best D in the game.

          • MB30SD

I see our D to be in the back of the top half… even if juuust out of it.

If they do that and we’re not total dogshit, we should crush people if our O can stay healthy. BOOM!

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

            MB –

Has Wilson got anything left in his tank, or was this just to bring some safety vet leadership to camp?

          • Trac

I really don’t even think the Bears know the answer to that question at this point.

          • MB30SD

I don’t know GP. It doesn’t sound like it from some of the other posts.

That said, the guy has had an amazing career with serious chops. If he does have anything in the tank he’ll be a SERIOUS upgrade.

From what we’ve all seen, it was a very good vet pick up for league min… and if he does bring anything more than in the lockerroom. bonus.

I would LOVE him to have something left though… he looked like a total badass.

          • Irish Sweetness

It would have been so cool if Donald had lasted another spot and we drafted SJP in the second – I’d feel a lot better about our line.

          • The Bears run D was atrocious last year, while their pass D-despite having the worst pass rush in the NFL-was just below middle of the pack (I look at efficiency metrics, not volume bs that is meaningless).

So I am projecting pass D to remain roughly steady, which is a very conservative projection considering the Bears clearly upgraded pass rush, CB (presumably Tillman healthier, Hayden back, Frey a year more experienced, added a highly touted rookie), and S (Mundy is at worst a wash with Wright, last years’ starting FS may not make the roster).

I expect the run D to take a major leap because it was top 10 through 5 weeks last year (again, efficiency, so yards per attempt). Now factor in the MASSIVE upgrades on the DL, especially for run D (PFF had Houston and Young as 2 best run defenders at 4-3 DE last year in the entire NFL, McClellin was the worst and is gone), and I expect Chicago to have a pretty strong run D.

          • MB30SD

            I like this.

          • I did an in-depth look at Chicago’s D last year. It’s a lot of reading, but it actually shows the pass D improving as the year went on. Terrible first 3-4 weeks in pass D, pretty good after that as they adjusted to no pass rush (again, this is efficiency, not volume, so it has nothing to do with teams running more. If anything, that makes pass D harder, as the D is gearing up to try and stop the run).

Here’s part 3, which has links back to the first 2 parts.

          • here’s part 2, which looks specifically at how both pass and run D changed as year went on and injuries mounted:

          • CanadaBear

I checked out a bunch of your recent articles. Good Stuff! Needless to say I agree with ya. I’ve got you bookmarked but never think to surf over. Thanks for the links (reminders).

          • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

I think we´ll realize how good or bad is this D, when injuries comes along the road and reserves pick their places…

          • yeah, I expect a decent number of injuries on the D this year. My biggest beef with the D is still that they have too many guys who are either old or young. Only good player they have on a second contract (typically the prime years of your career) is Houston.

          • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

right, specially D-line; Ratliff, Collins and Paea are not as healthy as I wish to see in a player`s background, and normally rookies gets hurt besides that they are a “no proven commodity” in case of bringing to “the rodeo”.

          • almost their entire defensive 2 deep is either 30+ (Tillman, Jennings, Allen, Ratliff, Hayden, Briggs, Williams, Wilson) or in their first 4 NFL years, a typical rookie contract (MD Jennings, Frey, Conte, rookies, McClellin, Bostic, Greene, Collins, Paea).

The only exceptions are Senn (STs LB), Steltz and McCray (ST S), Mundy (career backup), Willie Young (limited starting experience), and Lamarr Houston.

So if you were to name their 7-8 best defenders right now, only ONE would be in his prime. The rest are all either too old or too young (though you could make a case Tim Jennings is still in his prime). That’s a problem.

          • The Ghost of Super Bowl XX

that´s Why it will take one more year to settle D, closing the “gap” via UFA an draft, unless young ones take a huge leap this year. “crossing fingers”.

          • but at the same time, Briggs and Tillman are both likely gone next year. Could be more than 2 years until it’s top-shelf, unfortunately.

The D situation after last year is worse than the offense when Emery took over, because the offense had pieces in place that were in their prime (mainly Cutler and Forte, plus he was able to add Marshall, Bennett, Slauson, and Bushrod all in their primes).

          • Irish Sweetness

Oh Cracker boy had BETTER be generating some pass rush.

Seattle have lost three starters from their D I think. That’s serious chemistry being messed with.

        • Irish Sweetness

But last year is irrelevant, no? The defense was shredded by injury and we’ve added pieces to it. Hopefully our new center starts from day one, and we have Carey to go with Ford. I can’t see how we don’t move up to mid-pack on D. Even getting back our injured players could do that alone methinks.

          • johnnywad

Carey to go with Ford……. Matt Forte?

    • MB30SD

I think we take the following:
      * Carolina
      * Atlanta (you think they pull it ALL together in one year? i don’t)
      * No WAY the lions sweep us, no way in hell. They have an entirely new coaching staff. and Whatsisface is almost more meh than lovie.

SO I have us at 10-6. the rest was fair. I thought, but there are optys to take one or two more… like dallas or maybe even GB sweep (we’re due)

      • For your consideration….

        I have us at 11-5

        9/7 BUFFALO – W
9/14 at San Fran – L (this one will be a close game, they won’t have Aldon Smith and we won’t have Webb and Omiyale)
        9/22 at N.Y. Jets – W
        9/28 GREEN BAY – W
10/5 at Carolina – W (Carolina has no weapons anymore)
10/12 at Atlanta – W (I know longer believe in the Falcons)
        10/19 MIAMI – W
        10/26 at New England – L

        6-2 into the BYE

        11/9 at Green Bay – L
        11/16 MINNESOTA – W
        11/23 TAMPA BAY – W
11/27 at Detroit – W (fuck no are we losing to Detroit, Martz is not OC)
12/4 DALLAS – W (Romo will not be healthy and even if he is the Boys are done)
        12/15 NEW ORLEANS – L
12/21 DETROIT – W (Detroit is going to fall on their face this year)
        12/28 at Minnesota – W
        12-4 into the playoffs

        • MB30SD

I think we split Detroit… we always seem to.

          • For your consideration….

            it’s a new day.

          • Jericho…

          • For your consideration….

            indeed

        • johnnywad

I don’t think the New England game is out of reach either. That team is just not that scary anymore. If Trestman actually learned anything last year with regard to critical down and distance decisions, this will be an interesting coaching match up.

          • For your consideration….

agreed Wad, I just didn’t want to sound like a complete homer by saying 13-3. I think that with our talent we can hit 13-3 but as it always does in this league it will come down to injuries.

          • Irish Sweetness

13-3 Next year, with some more pieces added – like a safety and a DE.

          • I actually think NE is the best team in the NFL. They were last year, IMO, but then they had worse injuries than CHI (and still reached the AFCCG).

My SB pick as of right now would be NE over SF.

          • johnnywad

AFC was pretty weak with the exception of Denver and NE. Brady is due for a drop off, and I really think the Bears can just flat out outscore this team if Trest has his shit together. NE is still the favorite in my book, I just think the Bears have a chance here.

          • Irish Sweetness

Dude, Denver’s D will piss all over people this season. They had the best D off-season IMO.

          • don’t sleep on NE’s D either.

          • Irish Sweetness

They beat us when they’re not scary. Brady has our number.

          • johnnywad

Brady has never played the current Bears roster or coaching staff. Its a very different team than when he last saw it. He doesn’t have any number. I’m not saying bet the Bears to win this game. I’m saying the Bears are far more likely to beat the Patriots this year than in recent years.

          • Irish Sweetness

I fear Brady … and snow. Patriots in snow = bad for us.

        • CanadaBear

I’m thinking 9-7, possibly 10-6 if we have good health. I see us losing to SF, splitting games between Carolina and Atlanta. Back to back road games is a big ask. Losing to NE, @GB, @Det (for some reason we seem to shit the bed against them), NO (they’re due to beat us in Soldier Field) and either to Dallas or @MN just because we always blow a game when we really need one. Not very scientific, just going with my rather prodigious gut.

          • For your consideration….

Canada, I trust your judgment because you are a level headed pragmatic Canadian but I just can’t see the Bears losing 7 games this year.

          • CanadaBear

Honestly I want to say 13-3 but Trestman made some head scratching decisions during games last year. I’m sure he learned something each time but there’s probably a few more lessons to be learned. Not to mention Tucker. I’m not down on him. Last year was an aberration on D with all the injuries to the same position. Something that kills any team. I’m just not all in with this D. Hope you’re right!

          • For your consideration….

there is no doubt and that is why I was livid at points during the year. He got cute at the wrong times and used that fucking jumbo package on the goal line… you know, the one with no fucking weapons on the field??
In the red zone you put FORTE, MARSHALL, JEFFREY and UNICORN on the field and you make a defender earn his way onto Sportscenter. You don’t run Fiammetta and Rosario into the flats and have Unicorn as your only real option.

          • Irish Sweetness

I hope Forte is nowhere near the redzone this year. Got to be Carey, he has the size/nose for it … and I hope Tresty has the balls to find us a Fridge. Why wouldn’t you have a man-mountain in the backfield on X and Short ?

          • bearsfantillend

by Carey having the size i guess you mean that its better to be smaller at the goal line than Forte?

Anyway the Bears problems at the goalline has not been the RBs. its been the inability to get a push from the middle of the line. Garza sucked at getting a push which throws off everything.

          • Irish Sweetness

Now you have it – I want to see them make the switch now rather than later. Garza is a good guy to have on the bench, but it’s time to put in the guy that kept Brees upright.

          • Irish Sweetness

Jay Cutler. Pick an injury. No backup.

    • I tell you what, we roll into the spanking new SF NTTAWWT Stadium (trademark pending), and beat them, I’m gonna believe!
Oh, who am I kidding. I’m gonna believe anyways, but I’ll believe HARDER. SO FUCKING HARD (NTTAWWT).

      • Irish Sweetness

Does anyone here believe in Colin Kaepernick? They’ve got Lattimore back to go with Gore, some nice WRs … but I don’t buy into the dude under center as anything more than a set of legs. SF aren’t scary to me as others are. Saints, SEA and Packers, yes .. .SF not so much.

    • Irish Sweetness

Can’t see Detroit sweeping us (with BDLP at Center, yes with Garza). Tony Romo won’t beat us, ditto Meg Ryan, so 10-6 is the floor for me (with no serious injuries). Don’t see how we can be as bad as last year, what with the additions to the team combined with no rash of injuries. We’re not carrying Pep and hopefully Garza finds the bench. We have an exciting new RB and Alshon and MW are a year wiser.

The defense can’t possibly be worse than it was. We had the number 2 scoring offense last year, and have added significant pieces to the defense. 9-7 /10-6 absolute minimum. Deep playoff run the season after this.

Devil’s advocate – Cutty gets seriously injured and Emery is exposed for the tragic nobodies behind him. Season over at that point.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

Only 82 people shot this weekend. Chicago = Watch Dogs parody of itself

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-fourth-of-july-toll-82-shot-14-of-them-fatally-in-chicago-20140707,0,5439185.story

P.S. only 12 people killed in Afghanistan by guns in June.

    • Trac

But according to Chicago PD, homicides are down this year.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

You could have come downtown yesterday, gone up to the Willis Skydeck and looked southward towards Pilsen and it would have looked like World War Z on Day 1.

There were FOUR choppers in the air, fires burning in 4-5 places and sirens and paddy wagons on the move constantly. If the Skydeck would have stayed open after dusk, it would have been even a crazier sight to see.

    • Irish Sweetness

Like St. Paddy’s day in Ireland. Mayhem.

And I see Pat Quinn is your Governor, bejaysus.

  • Trac

This year, I’m holding out until at least week 2 before making any 19-0 predictions. I’m going to attempt to be objective. Lol

    • EnderWiggin

Yeah, make sure you wait until the conclusion of that week 2 game…

  • AlbertInTucson

Wow. Picking out a top FIVE favorite songs? How does one do THAT>

    Impossible task.

MY favorite Springsteen is GLORY DAYS.

“Glory Days, they’ll pass you by, Glory Days, in the wink of a young girl’s eyes…”

    • For your consideration….

gotta love Springsteen, so many classics.

      • MB30SD

        suuuuuuure.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

I was impressed that both the Stones and Springsteen came in 2012 with songs that really hit the Zeitgeist square in the jaw. None of today’s youth are doing it, too busy singing ballads on ‘Murican Idol, but the old timers rocked it in ’12

        • For your consideration….

watch it through and then in 1:14 it gets classic.

          • CanadaBear

Here’s another version. She recorded the song a few months before the Stones. Check out the band. A few of New Orleans, finest!

          • For your consideration….

            no link

          • CanadaBear

Sorry about that. I added it! DUH!

          • For your consideration….

            nawlins

        • Irish Sweetness

Fiftyseven channels and there’s nuuuthin on …

    • SC Dave

It is impossible, but zu hilfe from zauberflotte might make it

    • Irish Sweetness

For football it’s got to be ‘Born to run’. Not a big Springsteen fan, but always loved his “I’m on fire” and “Streets of Philadelphia”.

      • AlbertInTucson

Yeah, I’m not a huge “Boss” fan either. GLORY DAYS is currently his only entry on my 3 “Post ’60s” custom CDs.

Again, though, I couldn’t pick out just a “Top 5 Songs “list if my life depended on it. Just too many songs from too many genres. I don’t think I could even do just top 5 singers / groups.

        • Irish Sweetness

I noticed nobody was popping up their top 5s. That’s impossible. You’d need a Top 5 Slow Songs … Top 5 Rock songs ….. Top 5 Disco etc.

If I had to pick ONE song I’d pick ‘Smile’, just because Charlie Chaplin wrote it and its message.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

I’m suprised that Beastie’s Sure Shot didn’t make Jeff’s list

That seems a sure fire Hughes lock.

    • MB30SD

Loves me some sure shot… but if I had to pick one RIGHT NOW off the top of my head, it would be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Naf5uJYGoiU

Almost as much for the video as the song… and it’s not a roll… promise.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

Without a doubt, that is all you

        • MB30SD

hahahaha… without a doubt, sure shot lyrics are some of their best:

Pull Up At The Function And You Know I Kojak
To All The Party People That Are On My Bozak
I’ve Got More Action Than My Man John Woo
And I’ve Got Mad Hits Like I Was Rod Carew

          • MB30SD

            there’s also always rootdown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf1YF_MH1xc

The Beastie Boys You Know We Come To Get Down
Because I’ve Got The Flow Where I Grab My Dick
And Say Oh My God, That’s The Funky Shit

          • MB30SD

            and sabbotage… etc… etc…

They’re one of my apocalyptic bands of all time that changed music as we know it.

Zep, beasties, Janes addiction, beatles (yuck), etc…

          • Cormonster

All four top notch. A couple of my buddies flew to Vegas for the Janes Addiction Nothing Shocking extravaganza at Brooklyn Bowl. Said it was amazing. Back in the early 90s there was a party at a different friends house every night damn near. At all of them you heard Janes, Red Hots, Pumpkins, and usually Soundgarden or Lenny Krazitz. Ritual de lo Habitual, Blood sugar sex magic, gish, and Badmotorfinger and Let Love Rule had all come out around the same time. I still love all those albums.

          • MB30SD

Fucking awesome. Throw in ten and a little later stps core.

Also LOVE the foo. Dave grohl is SUCH a bad ass.

Liked bssm, but don’t love the rhcps otherwise. Back in the day it was always:

            Jane’s
            Peal jam
            Stp
            Pumpkins
            Soundgarden

Wasn’t ever a huge nirvana fan… always thought they got credit for starting grunge when it was really perry. He was the real visionary. Fuck ritual just changed me. Amazing

          • Cormonster

Janes and Pumpkins were by far my favorites back in the day. Gish, Ritual, and Nothing Shocking are still some of my favorite albums of all time, by far.
I seen Pumpkins play in a bar 3 times. Twice after Gish came out, and once after Siamese Dream. All incredible shows.
But Pumpkins were not close to as good as Janes at the first Lollapaloozzzaa. Fucking incredible. They were ascending so high, and then they just quit. I was so bummed. Janes was taking music to a new level on side two of ritual. Songs like Three Days and Classic Girl are masterpieces. Man I still love that band. Oh, and perry Farrell’s wife is hot as hell.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Ahhhhh … were you a long-haired freak too ?

            Proper metal : Metallica /Maiden / Slayer / Megadeth / Anthrax etc.

            Radio Metal (but cool) :

            STP – Plush.
            Pumpkins – 1979 or ‘Today …’
            SG – Black Hole Sun
Pearl Jam – ‘Alive’ or ‘Smile’
            Queensryche – Revolution Calling

Remember Living Color ? Faith No More? Sacred Reich? Ahhh … the days ….

I’m sure Marilyn Manson were good, I just couldn’t deal with the image.

Jane’s Addiction had nothing to do with metal IMHO (nor did the Pumpkins, but they were okay). Jane’s were a different genre, whatever it was.

They all kneel before Metallic though. There was Metallica .. .and then there was everybody else.

          • MB30SD

dude, metalica is the one metal band that can suck my dick. There were some that sucked, those idiots should fucking just go away.

THEY SUED THEIR OWN FANS FOR DOWNLOADING THEIR MUSIC MATE. Literally sued teenage superfans for hundreds of thousands of dollars for downloading a couple of their favorite songs. They are fucking asspirates of the greatest magnitude.

And mu theorem, is that janes were the real initiators of grunge. They changed music and the formula. And I’m just talking about their music, not the fact that Perry birthed Lalapalooza and pretty much the beginning of the modern music ‘festival’. Yeah yeah, I know what woodstock is, but I’m talking about bringing in the counter culture as part of it… the extreme lifestyle.

Anyway, you saying metalica is > than jane’s makes me question your sanity, your coolness, and your mancard.

          • Irish Sweetness

Oh I boycotted their gigs after that napster thing – I’ve never seen them live because of it. Lars is a dick. I bought all their records, E.P.s, and I reckon if I want their music in MP3 format I’ve already paid for it. That pissed me off. Doesn’t change the fact that when it comes to metal they were on their own at the the very top. After Load/Re-load it was downhill, but those first 5 or 6 albums were awesome.

Janes never entered my radar, but Metallica were everything to me growing up. I guess it depends on how much pain/anger a person carries, because Hetfield nailed all of that shit in his lyrics.

The modern music festival celebrates modern music, which sucks balls. Modern bands on the whole suck very badly indeed. There’s something missing. Maybe it’s the drugs.

            Beatles before drugs = boyband.
Beatles on drugs = best band ever(IMO).

[Metallica on drugs/alcohol = best metal band ]
[Metallic sober = the last few sucky albums]

If you want to be a musician … just say YES!

      • Irish Sweetness

‘Transitions’ was their best ‘grown up’ track I thought. They were a lot like the Beatles in how far they progressed musically as opposed to what they became famous for initially. R.I.P. MCA.

        • MB30SD

Def RIP MCA. what a bummer man.

While Paul’s boutique is probably my favorite ‘big time’ album, check out their much lesser known efforts to explore their musical talents.

The Mix Up is an instrumental album that is insane.

The In Sound From Way Out is also a total departure, but is awesome.

You gotta be FINE to pull this off. Most of these pics are not very appealing. Paris Hilton???? If you listen closely, you can hear labia clapping together as she walks. No thank you.

      • MB30SD

she’s like soooo not hoooot. Dumb whore.

I think a bag of old claw hammers has about 40 IQ points on her. Man that idiot is a worthless human.

        • CanadaBear

I’m sure she’s really nice if you get to know her!

  • MB30SD

    hey canada… NIBALI!!

and what the hell?!? It’s your job Biatch! Kiss that man!

    Hahahahaha

    • CanadaBear

Hilarious. I really like Nibbles. He and Bertie are always willing to animate a race and take chances. He’s from a real small town or the country. You can tell he’s super shy. He does well at press conferences and interviews but always seems awkward in social settings.

How ’bout Cav? Dumbass. That was totally his fault. Gotta give him credit for owning up to it. I really like Cav but he’s a very dangerous sprinter (the great ones always are). He wanted to win in his mum’s home town so bad he fucked up. Damn. Kittel is on another level (has been since last year). Another one from your favorite country!!!!!!!!!!

  • For your consideration….

I got into a weekend bbq party discussion about best music videos of all time. I introduce into evidence this little number:

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

      • For your consideration….

Dire Straits is on my Top 10 Favorite Bands list. Knopfler’s economical guitar style gets me every time.
        #Tunnel of Love

        • CanadaBear

He can really wail in a low key way. A very tasteful player. Never seen him but would like to. I don’t know how to go about picking 5 bands, artists, albums, let alone songs. Gotta give Jeff credit for putting it out there.

          • For your consideration….

much needed diversion. This season is going to be epic.

          • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

I watched Mark Knopflerr play about 12 years ago at Red Rocks. His guitar is even more sweet live.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Artists? Let’s try.

            1. Beatles

            2. Metallica

            3. Stevie Wonder

            4. Nat King Cole

            5 Ella w/ Satchmo

          • CanadaBear

You still had to kinda, sorta cheat by adding Louis Armstrong with Ella. None of them are my faves but you can’t go wrong with that list. Of those you listed Louis is my favorite. When I was a kid ALL my friends were Beatles fans and that’s all I heard when I was at their houses. At some point I OD’d on it. Don’t mind hearing the odd tune from them now.

          • Irish Sweetness

God, I could listen to Ella, Nat, Louis and all of that stuff anytime anywhere.

I get the Beatles OD thing .. if I hear “I’m only sleeping” I’m right back to 17 when the whole world revolved around my bed.

        • Irish Sweetness

Brother’s in arms will always be a classic. Less is more sometimes.

          • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

            -Telegraph Road.

          • Irish Sweetness

I think I used to put that on the jukebox just because it was so long. VFM!

    • Irish Sweetness

I remember the hoopla over ‘Thriller’. Dire Straits ‘money for nothing’ … but Metallica’s ‘One’ changed everything in the Metalhead’s universe.

  • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

I find this discussion to be fascinating and damn near impossible to answer at the same time. I’ll do my best though:

    1. Dogs (Pink Floyd Animals)

    2. Down by the River (Neil Young)

    3. House of the Rising Sun (Bob Dylan version (he didn’t write it, but his version was the first released))

    4. Desolation Row (Bob Dylan)

    5. L..A. Woman (The Doors)

Honorable mention: The Boys are Back in Town (Thin Lizzy), Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pink Floyd), It’s all over now Baby Blue (Bob Dylan), Masters of War (Bob Dylan (here’s the Pearl Jam version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8GHBk_HSXg ), Cortez the Killer (Neil Young), Telegraph Road (Dire Straits), Hey Hey My My (Neil Young), Evolution (Pearl Jam),…..Nearly ever Bob Dylan song written in the 60’s….

This is seriously an impossible task.

    • For your consideration….

      solid list Doc. impossible task.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

Or Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower

    • CanadaBear

I can’t even wrap my mind around it. I love different artists for different reasons. All depends on my mood. Seems like you’re really into songwriters. For me it’s all about the music first and the lyrics second. I know that makes me a peasant but you are what you are! One day my favorite songs might be all New Orleans artists, another day it might be Tex-Mex, or Reggae, etc.

My five favorite artist in no particular order (and this only applies today) Professor Longhair, Muddy Waters, Santana, Otis Clay/Solomon Burke and Richard Thompson. Fuck I had to cheat and combine OC and SB to include RT. I can’t even get down to 5 artists!!!!!!!

FUCK!!!!!!!!! I forgot Jimi. Carlos has to go!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

I see your point, Canada, but you’ll notice Down by the River and Dogs both are very long songs with long instrumental parts.

I would say I love long songs with great music, lyrics and passion. Passion is a must. If the song is acapello and the lyrics suck, but the singer puts their soul into it, I’ll generally love it.

        • CanadaBear

Yeah, if they’re mailing it in, count me out. That’s why I’m so crazy over Soul singers, Gospel singers, Blues singers, Reggae singers, etc. I just noticed a lot of Dylan and Neil. Both aren’t exactly great singers (cough, cough) but no doubt they walk the walk.

          • SC Dave

Try chanticleer if you like *singers* , canada… seriously

          • CanadaBear

            I’ll check it out.

          • CanadaBear

Great singers but not my thing. I’d bet they would be awesome live.

        • Irish Sweetness

State of mind is another thing. A lot of Floyd for me was more conducive to certain mind-altering substances. Like you can only listen to 90s trance if you’re on E. Crosby Stills & Nash, Canned Heat, Ten Years After, Janis, Hendrix, Beatles post 66 = weeeeeeeeeeeeed!

      • Irish Sweetness

Good one – REGGAE !! The Marley !!! Can’t do it. Can’t do a top 5 that spans all genres. Cannot.

Crooners – love them, need their own top 5. Deano, Frank, Nat, Louis, Ella etc.

    • Cormonster

Dogs is one of my favorite Floyd songs of all time. I see we both have great taste. The rest of the list is solid also. If you haven’t already, check out the Gov’t Mule Floyd set sometime. Pretty damn impressive.

      • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

The whole Animals album gets my nads swole. Such an underrated kick-ass album. Nick Mason is Gonzo on drums. Just love it. That Mule set was the first album I listened to when you sent me that collection.

Nice job on the W by the way. Well done. It was time for that fucker to take a fall. I’ll be back on the horse soon. It’s taking me a while to replace my phone so I may just bloody up my fingers and rejoin the race. I have to say, it’s been nice taking a step back from the ol’ chess board. It was all I could think about for a while.

        • Cormonster

Mason is under-rated or under appreciated by people and critics, along with Wright.
Me and my brother had a 90 minute TDK cassette with Animals on one side and Wish You Were Here on the other side. Good thing I bought the high quality one, because we listened to that over and over again for years. Whenever we had a lot of homework, or just reading in our room, that got played constantly. I know those two albums backwards and forwards. The two songs you listed are two of my favorites as well.

        • Irish Sweetness

Are you a Cream fan, Doc ? Ginger was the man on drums.

          • CanadaBear

Check this out if you have Netflix or find it online.

            http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1931388/

What a loon! Great drummer but a complete wingnut. The story of Cream breaking up and Baker just showing up to be Blind Faith’s drummer is funny. Clapton was horrified (he was trying to get away from Baker).

      • Irish Sweetness

I preferred their earlier stuff during the Acid years, but ‘Us and them’ and ‘Time’ from Dark Side were the pinnacle 4 me. The music industry has changed bigtime, and one wonders if there will ever be great bands again.

    • Irish Sweetness

Spot the smoker ! Chiba tunes :

      1. Us & Them, Floyd.
      2. The End, Doors.
      3. Voodoo Chile, Jimi
      4. White Room, Cream.
      5. Cocaine, Jackson Browne

But leaving out Zep, half the people that played Woodstock, anything Clapton was in ….. my old segosia Phil Lynnott & Thin Lizzy .. AC/DC …. there’s an easy one – best three minutes of Rock n Roll … Whole Lotta Rosie – AC/DC. That’s the one I’d play to the aliens when they ask me what rock n roll is.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

Live your life as if you were your own ghost.

Football played like this would be interesting.

  • MB30SD

    canada check this out: http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/07/tour-de-france-selfies

I always thought I’d go fucking ballistic at fans not giving me room. Man, on some of the climbs it must take another level not to be pissed off by morons getting in your face while your heart nearly busts out of your chest trying to win an impossible race after training the last 364 days for this moment.

Kinda silly officials don’t get a little more aggressive with these idiots.

    • CanadaBear

Makes me crazy. You see the riders swinging at some of those douchebags that run along side them in the mts. Those guys get spit on and have shit (literally) thrown on them. When a fan punched Eddy Merckx in the stomach during a mt stage of the TdF, it essentially ended his career.

      • MB30SD

        it’s just ridiculous

      • Irish Sweetness

Didn’t he win the TDF like 5 times on no drugs?

        • CanadaBear

He tested positive twice in his career. Who knows? Greatest cyclist of all time. There is no doubt about that. You look at his list of palmares and it’s 10 times longer than anyone else’s. They didn’t call him the Cannibal for nothing!

  • MB30SD

since we’re talking about ‘art’, I thought I’d post this.

I found this pretty interesting: http://www.avclub.com/article/heres-learned-analysis-why-michael-bay-movies-are–206582

(btw, if you haven’t seen the lego movie. See it. Actually, hilarious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlULz0QN_7E. “that idea is just…. the worst”)

  • As much as I love you guys (except our resident packer troll), I don’t think I share even remotely the same musical taste as most, and esp Jeff. Randy Newman? What am, an 90 year old crooner drinking whiskey sours?

So, I shall follow Picasso. When asked what his favorite painting was, he responded, “The one I am working on right now.” As such, here are the 5 I am listening to right now, which most likely will not tickle your fancy.

    1. Tora Tora Tora (Depeche Mode)

    2. Psycho Killer (Talking Heads)

    3. Queen of Night Aria (Damrau version)

    4. Echoes (Pink Floyd, who’s coming out with a new album in OCT!)

    5. Northern Lights (Lebanon Hanover)

    • For your consideration….

Nice, good call on Depeche Mode, Floyd and Talking Heads.

    • SC Dave

Do i see Mozart!?!? You surprise me there

      • NewBearInTown

I actually had Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony on my list, but I took it off. Classical music doesn’t have songs, they have “pieces” – its a different way of dividing compositions.

        • SC Dave

Perhaps Chopin? (Could I only play this stuff like Moravec… what chance would women have to resist me?)

BTW, I cannot recommend a recording more than Moravec’s rendition of the nocturnes. To steal a quip from Amadeus – Absolute Beauty.

          • Irish Sweetness

            Polished Polish pianist.

        • Irish Sweetness

Oh God – we’ll be here all day. J.S. Strauss Blue Danube. Mascagni’s Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana. The Flower Duet (Lakme). Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata’, ‘Ode to Joy’ … Debussy’s Clair de Lune… (head exploding) ….

    • Cormonster

It ain’t Floyd without Roger Waters. I liked the Division Bell and Momentary Lapse of Reason, but I rarely listen to them. I like Gilmore’s solo stuff better. That said, Pink Floyd in concert in the early 90’s was fantastic. Have you seen the original Live in Pompei, or the bastardized Director’s cut that came out in the last 10 years? I was pissed off when I bought the Director’s Cut version in the store. The original was so much better and didn’t need to be messed with regarding some of the ancillary video.

      • DocNitty(BallsStillOrnamental)

Huh. Interesting that you said that. I’ve never really liked the Gilmore stuff solo. What do you recommend I take a second listen to?

        • Cormonster

I liked his first solo album. That is probably the one you are thinking of. His live concert album is the one I like the best. Live in Gdansk(?) I know I’ve seen video of it. It came out in the early 2000’s or about. He kicks some ass. Probably still my favorite guitarist of all time.

          • Irish Sweetness

Good looking bastard in his day too …

    • Irish Sweetness

Did you see Talking Heads do ‘Home’ in the movie ‘This must be the place’ ? Great.

  • NewBearInTown

In the interest of the discussion below, I’m splitting this into “Jams” and “Tunes.” Jams are lengthy tracks where I love the band playing the song with the arrangement, the solos, the singer, the whole jam.
“Tunes” are just that: tunes. The artist doesn’t really matter. So I made sure to pick tunes that have been performed by at least three artists to my liking.
    Jams
    Herbie Hancock – Chameleon
Dave Matthews Band – Gray Street
    Elvis – Suspicious Minds
    Beatles- In My Life
Led Zepplin – Over the Hills and Far Away
    Tunes
Somewhere Over the Rainbow (Arlen/Harburg, though not a huge fan of the original)
You are the Sunshine of my Life (Stevie Wonder)
I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton)
    Your Song (Elton John)
    All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)
There are maybe 100 other songs that could go on either list. I also left all jewish tunes off because you guys wouldn’t know them anyway.

    • SC Dave

Check the celtic women version of over the rainbow. I prefer garland’s, but hell…

      • Irish Sweetness

        Eva Cassidy’s version was wonderful.

Paul McCartney isn’t well, I believe. I’ll shed a tear for him and Stevie when they depart for the great gig in the sky.

    • Cormonster

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vBuL6tk-EAn Not onee of the best versions, but still very good with its own twist, is The Feelin playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow for his Mom. Stupid TV show, but I used to go watch this guy play all night in the bars and his nickname is apt. HIm and whatever band he was playing in was a total steal for a $5 cover.

      • NewBearInTown

Since I seem to have struck a nerve. The best version of Over the Rainbow I’ve heard was Jerry Garcia on an album called Acoustic Gold. Totally random, but really transcendent.

The album belonged to a friend of the family. Haven’t found it since. Anyone have any insight?

        • Cormonster

I’ll look into it. I have a lot of Deadhead friends.

          • Irish Sweetness

Not a ‘Heads or Stones fan, but I enjoyed Sam Cutler’s book “You can’t always get what you want”. He managed both bands. Great read.

          • Cormonster

I’ve been annoyed listening to many a Greatful Dead show, but the ones that are good are frickin incredible. Jerry’s emotive singing and guitar playing can transport you to a dream world.

        • Irish Sweetness

The closest I got was a guy he used to play with, David Grisman.

And I guess everyone has heard this version that Israel Kamikwole melodied with What a wonderful World. I think I first heard this as Mark Green was dying in E.R. If not, enjoy :

    • Irish Sweetness

      Lovely tunes … (Dylan?)

Stevie’s got so many great tunes. I could easily list the five albums he released between 1972-1976 as my favorite five albums of all time. Easily. Stevland Morris was The Man. Up there with Macca as the best songwriter in English.

Elton wrote some great tunes, Daniel, Tiny Dancer, Blue Eyes, Benny & the jets etc.

      • NewBearInTown

If I am not mistaken Bob Dylan wrote All Along the Watchtower. Hendrix had a hit with his own version, but didn’t write it. I was listing writers.

  • Trac

Well isn’t this just special, its’s musical Bears.

  • Thanks for the kind words below, Canada. In case you (or anybody else) missed them, here are a few recent articles I wrote on Cutler that I think are important going forward.

How he improved in 2013 (basically completion %): http://www.bearsdraftontap.com/#!A-closer-look-at-Jay-Cutlers-maturity-in-2013-part-1/c182g/CCC5DBB0-6AA5-4A92-B79B-68B1F1D309CE

How he didn’t improve in 2013 (too many multi-INT games): http://www.bearsdraftontap.com/#!A-closer-look-at-Jay-Cutlers-maturity-in-2013-part-2/c182g/DFD39023-B4DA-45BE-B87B-9F8A78DBEA3D

what he has done in year 2+ of an offense in the past (cut down turnovers and TDs): http://www.bearsdraftontap.com/#!Jay-Cutler-in-the-same-offense/c182g/8E9B0EC2-580D-45F2-BDF9-66BDC09BD7E0

    • SC Dave

Interesting on cutler and inconsistency in passer ratings. Ever compared him to Rex that way? Might be some intersting parallels, although Grossman was likely more extreme on both ends

      • I did a study last offseason looking at standard deviation of passer ratings from game to game for all starting QBs.

I found that Cutler was the least consistent QB in the NFL from 2010 to 2012.

The most consistent QBs were mostly really good (Rodgers, Brady) or really bad (Bradford, Gabbert). The least consistent QBs were mostly 2nd tier guys like Romo, Cutler, Ryan, etc. Guys who can play like those top guys but also have some stinker games. I found that interesting.

Here’s the original article, if you’re interested in the full table: http://watercoolersportsnetwork.com/2013/01/24/nfl-quarterbacks-is-consistent-always-better/

        • For your consideration….

          Nice effort my man.

Elite quarterbacks are consistently good because elite quarterbacks are most often put in the positions to succeed most consistently with complete rosters, coherent scheme and not only depth but impact players.

Consistency of scheme, quality of surrounding personnel and quality of the individual player all go into the final result. Not just games played. Can’t measure it in my opinion.

          Brady on the 2009-2012 Bears???
Steve Young stays on the Bucs instead of going to the 9ers?
          Flacco on the Jags??
Cutler in the same system for 7yrs??
          Brees on the Raiders??

The level of play from the individual is so dramatically impacted by the team, circumstances and opposition that it would be impossible to discover what truly makes a player elite at the Pro level.

That’s why this season is going to be so interesting for us Bears fans. In the absence of catastrophic injury we’ll see what impact more talent, more consistency and better coaching has on our boys.

          • SC Dave

Elite quarterbacks are also consistently good because they are better players.

I know there is a lot of Jay love, and that his situation has been less than ideal. But bottom line is he needs to show he can do it. That sure would be nice.

          • to me there are two things that make elite quarterbacks:

            1) Decision making. Seems obvious, but so many people get infatuated with arm strength. This is the single most important QB trait, IMO. Take what the D gives you, but be able to push the ball down the field when the opportunity arises.

            2) Accuracy. Again, not as sexy as arm strength but much more important. Can you put the ball exactly where you want it every time?

          • MB30SD

1 is obviously his biggest problem. #2 is… not.

If he can fix #1 to a good degree, he should have a banner year… IF he can stay healthy.

          • Cutler’s accuracy is not as consistent as I would like it to be. I’m pretty sure it stems from mechanical issues due to some bad habits from years of getting killed behind a shitty OL. Doesn’t always set his feet properly.
The big thing the QB coach said when talking about how much Cutler had improved earlier this offseason was that Cutler’s mechanics had gotten a ton better, so hopefully that proves to be true.

          • CanadaBear

At least a couple games every year he comes out amped up and overthrows everything. Usually he settles down and has a decent game but those stretches really hurt the completion percentage.

          • Irish Sweetness

Is Eli Manning an elite QB ?

          • IMO Eli is not among the top 15 QB in the NFL. His career stats are decidedly unremarkable.

Also, I hate the term “elite.” Some people throw it around like there are 10 elite QBs. That’s 33% of starting QBs, which is far from elite. I would say there are 3-4 elite QBs, and even that might be pushing it.

          • For your consideration….

I specifically mentioned that the quality of the players matters but when you put an “elite” player in a position to not succeed, you know what you get? Inconsistency.

          • Irish Sweetness

Cutty certainly has NO excuses this year. 35+ TDs is a minimum expectation. My concern is that he will never learn to throw a ball into the bleachers.

          • johnnywad

He did that last year quite a bit more than he had in past seasons. I think he’s learning to throw it away when necessary.

          • For your consideration….

except that he did it last year, take out the first Detroit game when the Kitties totally bitchslapped Trestmans gameplan and all is good.

          • That is a valid point. Usually when QBs get hurt, it’s because they’re holding the ball of for too long and take unnecessary hits. It’s hard enough in this league surviving without those extra hits.

That being said, Cavanaugh and gang have insisted that Cutty has totally bought into the system. Cleaning up his mechanics and going from read to read in timely fashion. I think the article mentioned, “Jay, if you stay too long on one target, you’re going to be late on your next read.” and that Cutty now doesn’t lock onto one target (usually Bmarsh) as much as he used to (Alshon blowing up is evidence of this).

Let’s hope the progression continues now that we FINALLY have continuity, competence and weapons on O.

          • Irish Sweetness

Aaahhhh but Alshon was the guy McCown locked onto. Cutty went down, AJ’s numbers went up.

      • CanadaBear

Not to mention the Sex Cannon fumbled about every third snap. One thing that hurts Cutler’s numbers is his attitude towards INT’s. I get pissed when he’s not careful with the rock but some of those INT’s are at the end of the half or the game when he’s throwing it up for grabs on a long bomb without much chance for the INT to come back and haunt us. There are a few QB’s that seem to be all about the stats and would never do that (I’m looking at you Meg Ryan). Don’t get me wrong, I wish he was a little more careful with the rock.

Looking over at the NBA, you can see an argument why the franchise tag actually helps free agency. By keeping certain grenades out of the free agency marketplace, teams are more willing to sign the players left over because they’re not waiting to see what Lebron will do.

But that got me thinking. What would be the NFL equivalent of the big three going to the Heat? Closest thing in my mind was when Peyton signed with Denver, but I look at the impact of that move and I’m not sure it was as dramatic. Manning can’t play defense, and he needs an offensive line, and according to most folks he needs at least halfway decent receivers.

So if the franchise tag were abolished today. What would the NFL equivalent of the big three be? Feels like it would need to be more than three players, but the obvious choice would be a QB, WR and RB combo.

If Peyton, Adrian Peterson and Calvin Johnson all went to play for… lets say the Vikings tomorrow. Would that have as big of an impact as the three had on the Heat?

How many defensive players would it take? You get the top 3 young pass rushers plus two shut down corners. That’s five. Is that enough?

    • NBA has 5 players who start and maybe 8-9 who will play in a given game.

NFL has 22 starters and about 45 who play in a given game.

So it’s really tough to have a “big 3.” NFL is much more team oriented and less star-driven (though a superstar QB is the closest thing you get to an NBA superstar).

      • but if I were going to do a “big” grouping in NFL, I’d go with best QB in the game (so Rodgers or Peyton, depending on your POV) with a stud DL. That pretty much guarantees a good O and good D.

        • NewBearInTown

          Hmmm.
Andrew Luck, JJ Watt, Robert Quinn and Aldon Smith all finish their fifth years and decide to give a discount to a winner in 2016. So the combined cap hit for those four ends up being $44M per year.
How much of an impact does that have on a team with no other stars at signing, no major cap obligations and top 10 draft position (like the Jaguars when Gus Bradley took over)?
Is that more of an impact than four offensive players like, say…
Andrew Luck, A.J. Green, Julio Jones, and the 2013 version of Julius Thomas taking the same money?

          • for sure. This gives you foundation for studly D and O. Stud O no D = 2013 Bears.

        • Irish Sweetness

Imagine Peyton on the Bears of Jay’s first few seasons? Jay could run, Peyton would be a sitting duck with no weapons to hit and would have put up Eli numbers I’d imagine. Eli last-year-numbers.

          • Peyton has long been brilliant at getting the ball out quickly and making his OL look better than it is. He would have survived and performed better than Jay did.

          • bearsfantillend

true but Peyton played with good receivers/TEs. he had never had to play with a bunch of midgets that got bumped off routes and stone handed TEs.

Continuing my “I couldn’t just pick 5…” thought.

Haven’t seen Nemo!?!? Should I call CPS now or later? WiR was good too. If you haven’t seen tangled, I think they’ll like it.

Yeah, R&S was always a fav in my house. Pretty hilarious and deranged stuff.

TV – Robotech, Speed Racer, Rick and Morty (AS), Phineas and Ferb.
Movies – Anything by Hayao Miyazaki. Start with Spirited Away and move about the airplane. So much cool stuff. If you have kids they are magical. There is a reason Disney bought the rights to everything he directs. Evangelion 1.11,2.22,3.33 these movies are buckets of awesome.
Generally I watch cartoons more than live TV. Can’t stand doctor, lawyer, or cop shows. Meh.

    Canada… stage 5 tomorrow… the COBBLES!!!

I have a feeling it’s going to be a bloodbath. Yikes!

    • CanadaBear

I hope everyone survives without hitting the deck but you know that won’t happen. Unfortunately I moved from Calgary last week when i retired. Our place in the mts doesn’t have cable so the only racing I see is highlights. First time in 30+ years I’m not watching most stages. DAMN! Hopefully Spartacus and a few of the other Spring Classics contenders make life hell for all those mountain goats. Nibbles and Bertie are both great bike handlers but not much experience on the cobbles. Froome may have some trouble tomorrow. I’m pulling for Nibbles or Bertie so if Froome struggles I won’t be heartbroken. TdF … Fuck Yeah!

    • MB30SD

also, france is so beautiful. Amazing. Can’t wait to go back.

Pretty sure I want to go see a few stages next year. Going to start socializing it with some of my riding buddies.

      • CanadaBear

That would be awesome. I’d love to see one of the big 3 stage races. Probably would prefer the Vuelta because it’s not so crazy. My wife speaks both French and English (she’s from Montreal) so the language thing wouldn’t be much of an issue. Here’s a nice article about the stage tomorrow with Spartacus’ take on it. Can’t wait.

Yeah, that would be good to have a native speaker, but I’ve never had issues. As long as you’re respectful and not the ‘loud american’ the french are actually awesome.

I was thinking about doing a week in FR. Catch two MAYBE 3 stages and then just do my own thing in one of my fav countries after that. I’d love to catch a L’Alpe d’Huez stage, but I’m sure people go camp out for days there. If/as it starts coming together, I’ll keep you in the loop.

          • CanadaBear

That would be awesome. I would prefer to see the Spring Classics but you know the weather is going to be the shits. I’ve had biking friends go to the TdF and they said they go uphill so fast it blows your mind. I was about 5 feet from Sagan when he came across the finish line in Calgary (he won) and it was incredible. And Sagan is not even one of the top sprinters.

    Dude’s a genius.

  • FRIENDS. It’s me. Hi. Been MIA for a bit but it’s summer so I’m not about to apologize.

Anyway, I come to you with an offer someone may like. As none of you know, I’m on the wait list for season tickets. One of the “perks” of this is a ticketmaster code to buy single game tickets before the general public. Unfortunately, this “perk” mandates that I buy just as many pre-season tickets as I do regular season tickets. UP YOURS, NFL.

Anyway, I’m not going to buy any tickets this year. Would any of you like the code? It would be more expensive than buying from TM when it goes on sale to the general public because you’d have to grab pre-season as well, but it’s definitely cheaper than secondary market if you’re looking for a big game.

The pre-sale is tomorrow, 11am-4pm CT. Let me know if you want it. First come first served.

  • For your consideration….

Few NFL teams with players the community should be proud to have living among them. Bears have two in Brandon Marshall & Peanut Tillman.
Bears have/had more than two and that’s a good thing. McCown, Cutler, Izzy, Earl, Forte, Garza, Bushrod, etc all are extremely active in the community with kids, hospitals, etc.

    • CanadaBear

I know those types of stories aren’t all that exciting to read for the casual fan but it does make you proud to be a Bears fan when those guys go out into the community. I know you can’t fake it (helping the poor, visiting hospitals, working with kids, etc.), but more athletes should be out there helping out. Great stuff!

To all Floyd fans, especially Floyd fans with artistic ability.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time. I still listen the them several times a week. Have for 23 years since I’ve discovered them when I was about 16. I’ve always wanted a Floyd Tattoo, but I want it to be something that only true Floyd fans would recognize as a Floyd tattoo. Nothing like the wall, or dark side. Too obvious. Like Irish said, to a Floyd fan, their psycadelic years where the years that holds the most mistique.

Example. the song Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Or Saucer full of Secrets. Or Careful with that Axe, Eugene. Or the song, One of these Days (I’m going to cut you into little pieces). Basically I want a cool tattoo that looks dark like Floyd and only a Floyd fan would know what it was. Trouble is, I’m not creative like that. I need help.

    any thoughts?

    • CanadaBear

Go to their website or sift through their albums and see if there is a pic or a graphic that really speaks to you. Any tattoo artist worthy of the name should be able to reproduce it or add their own take on it. Not sure if you have any ink or not Doc. I’ve got some and used to hang out at a tattoo shop. If you haven’t been tattooed and have any questions I’d be happy to try and answer them. Where are you thinking about placing it on your canvas?

BTW, I had a bike built for me. It’s pink. The name is Floyd!

The statistical correlation coefficient between QB rating and wins per season.

    • good thought. I think I’ve seen something like this before. It’s a definite correlation, but not as big as you’d think.

I did one like that with turnovers and found it was about 30% or so (so r^2=0.3).

    • Irish Sweetness

Jimmy Mac would be a statistical anomaly in there. Average QBR but won more games per season than 99% of QBs that have ever played the game, which –

    • NewBearInTown

Really hilarious. And totally my speed in terms of recipes. Great find.

      • MB30SD

        excellent

    • SC Dave

Actually, they all look pretty good, although I won’t eat risotto, and chickpeas (actually any legume) are only an occasional indulgence. That winter stir fry… another keeper, though I’ll probably use my spiral cutter thingy to make faux noodles from zucchini instead of using any kind of pasta.

It’s not that I’m a zealot, but I get more than enough bread in my diet, albeit in liquid form.

      • MB30SD

look at you dave! Man after my own heart. See, we aren’t that different after all.

Have fun! I’m going to go ride 20 and swim a 1/2.

  • I don’t know who got beat worse. Apollo Creed vs Drago, Shamrock vs Tito Ortiz, or Brazil v Germany….

    2. Where can I find said chicks?

        • MB30SD

          Springbreak foevah bitches!!

  • MB30SD

    Stones or beatles?

    • AlbertInTucson

Beatles. That said, the choice doesn’t make the Stones chopped liver. More Beatle songs on my mix CDs than any other artists, but Mick and his boys are well represented, too. The concept that you can only like one or the other is ludicrous.

      • MB30SD

        Wrong answer.

Just kidding. I get it Al… not really.

    • For your consideration….

      Stones by a long shot.

      • MB30SD

        Bingo!

        Can’t stand the beatles.

        • Stones stink. Bunch of 3-chord-charlies.

          • For your consideration….

            you bastard.

          • i prefer original compositions, not infinite variations on the same theme.

          • MB30SD

            WOOOOOOOOOW!!

what is wrong with you!? Fucking hipsters! SMH.

            Hee hee

          • Phish fan. Not a hipster. Huge difference, brah. 😉

    • SC Dave

      Beatles

        Had to be dave. hahahaha

    • NewBearInTown

      Beatles.

      • NewBearInTown

But it was awesome that Jessie Ventura’s campaign platform included the position that “Led Zepplin and the Rolling Stones are the greatest bands of all time.”

    Don’t miss ze bus!

    • MB30SD

      I’m on ze bus.

      (Hee hee)

      • Trac

Hahaha. I’m rolling, you made my day. Lol

  • Peanut FTW

I think in a very technical sense… 2 of those choices are not songs at all. To be a song, it would require singing, but I get the point. Personally, I don’t really enjoy any music without singing as it seems the music is only half done until the words are added. My top 5 in no particular order would be:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Blue on Black
    Allman Brothers – Soulshine
    Nirvana – About a Girl
Ray Charles – Drown in My Own Tears
Tracy Chapman and Eric Clapton – Give Me One Reason

    • Cormonster

Soulshine is definitely one of my all time favorites.

I likery. That’s what that cheese heads are going to look like after Cutty & Co. get done with their beloved this year. Come to think of it, they have the same puke green and piss yellow colors. Hahaha.

I actually have very well behaved kids after reading this.

Hey MB, how ’bout Nibbles? Bertie loses over 2 minutes and Froome goes home. Now THAT’S a stage in the TdF. All the Brits are crying on the cycling forums. That’s bike racing!

    • MB30SD

Yeah been a crazy race so far. Cav and froome out already. Shitty weather man. Brutal

      • CanadaBear

Can’t imagine riding on the cobbles in dry conditions. In wet conditions they must be terrifying.

        • MB30SD

yeah, scary sheite. pretty brutal to do that. just so slippery.

    • Groundskeeperwillie

First time post , previous system always kicked me out . Got into the Tour about 5/6 years ago and normally watch the highlights 7-8 pm our time. Spoiled the surprise but anyone who picks Richard Thompson can’t be all bad

      • CanadaBear

Sorry about that. Now that I know you watch later, I won’t give it away. Yeah, RT is incredible. Good singer, great guitarist and one of the best songwriters out there. Been a big fan since he was still recording with his ex-wife.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

Univision Desportes was giving the live feed away all World Cup – now, suddenly, they shut it all down and make you login with your cable provider.

I have AT&T U-Verse, but I only get data (ISP). I have an Apple TV at home, so I don’t need AT&T UVerse sending me TV, it’s way too fucking expensive and isn;t on-demand like an Apple TV is.

the flipside is that my AT&T UVerse login isn’t tagged as having tv rights, so I can’t login and get streaming when ESPN and Univision pull this shit. That sucks.

Are they + or – with Caldwell as opposed to Gym Shorts?

      • MB30SD

I personally think Caldwell is a flatliner who screams 8-8 over the lifetime of his tenure there.

No way that dude corrals all the fucking thugs on that team. At least JS spoke their language… meathead dbag

      • Trac

Can’t answer that question yet. Detroit has talent but they haven’t come anywhere close to leaning how to win yet.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

    Holland is on Radio Ghana

  • Trac

Just sat down to watch the game. Not much going on yet from what I saw. Argentina seems to be misfiring near the Dutch end.

  • Trac

This Dutch goalie is playing with fire. Not playing very smart.

  • Trac

Dutch aren’t looking good. Didn’t MB endorse Argentina? Hmm.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

THat looked like Major Wright laying somebody out cold….

  • Trac

Hope the Dutch win but I’ve got that sinking feeling I get when the Bears are playing a big game that I know they can’t win. Hope I’m wrong.

    • SC Dave

      Well, two bright sides:
      1) Reduce European futbol hubris.
      2) Lionel Messi.

  • Trac

Dam. Now I gotta hear it from MB.

    • Used up all his kiss of death yesterday. Not enough to flow over to ARG.

      • MB30SD

        sour graaaaaaapes!

        hee hee

    • MB30SD

      Hee hee… hee hee.

Thats what you get for picking a fucking flip flopping traitor. SMFH at you two.

    Oh well… HEERRROOOOOOOOOOO

    #P&CKissofDeath

    (hee hee)

    • Trac

Didn’t think about the rain. Shoulda factored in the weather. Curse you Argentina, curse you.

      • MB30SD

Oh please. You forgot to factor in the suckiness. Factor that shit in! BAAAAHHAHAHAHA

Bastards been fucking with me all cup. SUCK IT BOYS! SUCK IT!

        • MB30SD

Oh, and btw… I am ALLLL about the germans to take it all.

          Hee hee

          • Trac

Wow! Do I hear cheesy in the background?

          • MB30SD

Hahaha… yes, I am trolling you two bastard hard right now. I shut it and took it for the last 3 weeks.

My tuuuuuurn! Hahahaha (yes, acting like a petulant 5 yr old is fun now and then)

          • Trac

            Lol. Touch’e!

          • MB30SD

If it makes you feel any better trac my brother… I am jumping on your bandwagon… even in the driver’s seat, and going with the germans to beat Arg in the final.

I’m germany all the way now!!!!

          • Trac

Yeah. Crow never tastes good but I can’t see anyone beating ze Germans now. You never know though, there could be another torrential downpour which would impede ze Germans ability to pass the ball around like a pinball machine. As I watched the game today I couldn’t reconcile any of the teams on the field beating Germany. If they win I’ll have to say, they deserved it.

          • MB30SD

Hahahahahahaha… you and $, both sour grapes. Hahaha… awesome.

Yeah, we’ll see. Ze germans are a fucking machine. So efficient and good. Hoping for an upset, but not at all expecting it.

  • Well, from the start, I said Germany v Holland, and I thought Germany would take it all, but I was sorta pulling for Holland since they never won a WC.

But now, I’ll fall in goosestep line and go for ze Germans.

    • MB30SD

yeah man, come on! A fucking brain injured duck could have said germany from the start.

Use your imagination man! Pull for the underdog! Be a Dave!!!

    • Trac

Today I got the thought that an all European final in the heart of the jungle didn’t sound right, and also that the Netherlands were 0-3 in the finals. That was rather unsettling to my longshot hopes of Holland winning as I was reminded of the Vikings and Bills unsuccessful attempts of winning a Championship as well.

      Go Germany! He he.

      • MB30SD

        YES! GOOOOOOO Germany!!!!!

        WOOOO HOOOOO!!!!

Best fucking Vikings fan letter evar:

Our mascot is my Benjamin Franklin meets Ted Nugent looking former high school guidance counselor, and he quit because the strain of blowing on a Norse trombone and wearing dead animals while riding a motorcycle meant he couldn’t write letters of recommendation for coked-out high school seniors. Our mascot is what could best be described as what John Candy would look like if his heart didn’t explode. Our quarterback has two Masters degrees but can only stare at one receiver for half a millisecond before he either throws the ball straight up into the air or trips over Phil Loadholt’s feet/tits. We have the best football player on the planet, but the only reason he shits on every other player in the league is because his bigoted, superhuman legs run like a gay marriage is taking place behind him. Our current stadium looks like a frozen Marie Calendar’s pot pie, and our future stadium looks like an anvil (which is appropriate because we’ve been chasing success like Wile E. Coyote chases the Roadrunner). It doesn’t matter though; our new stadium won’t get built because our owner is a sleazy racketeer who’ll have to sell the team in 18 months before they ever break ground, and I’ll be writing you in five years about how much the Los Angeles Vikings suck. Oh, and this franchise can’t even have a fuck party without it all going to shit. We just gave a guy who was found guilty of racketeering charges in a botched real estate deal $498 million dollars to build a stadium that looks like the Jawa Sandcrawler. This is an organization that, after watching film, conducting interviews and running individual workouts, decided to draft Christian Ponder 12th overall. I was at a bar in Chicago watching the draft unfold with a friend from Cleveland. When the selection was made, I sat in silence with my mouth agape. All my Cleveland buddy could say was, “Sorry, man.”

If being pitied by a Browns fan weren’t bad enough, the next table was full of blowhard Bear wangs who were having a grand time laughing at the pick. I didn’t stand up for my team and felt a little like Judas for the betrayal. But screw that. At least Judas got 30 silver coins out of the deal. All I’ve gotten from the Vikes is 42 years of misery and a closet full of purple and gold clothing that’s too garish for Don Magic Juan.

    And fuck Gary Anderson.
