DaBearsBlog Will Speak with NFL Draft Countdown’s Scott Wright on Tuesday…

| April 28th, 2014

x

…and I need your questions. Scott is my favorite “draft guru” out there and he’s been gracious enough, for the second straight year, to grant me a half hour of his time during the busiest two-week period of his calendar. So submit questions you’d like me to ask him in the comments section below. I’ll take a half dozen of the best ones and ask them directly to Scott.

One note. To separate your questions from the general conversation below, type the word QUESTION (in the caps) at the start of the question. This way I can get through the comments quickly.

Thanks in advance.

QUESTION: In Baltimore, Arthur Brown is under pressure to earn a starting spot since Rolondo McClain is retiring (again). He was touted as being a NFL linebacker lock despite not having 1st round talent. The problem is that he’s just too small; weight training this offseason packed 6 pounds of muscle on him, and he’s still only 233. The Bears took Jon Bostic, with something of the same problem: he’s too small to play in the middle in the grindhouse NFL North.

Now, the Bears are looking at Aaron Donald at 14 for DT. The Bears track record with undersized tackles is atrocious. Have we reached an era in the NFL where you just have to get the guys who you know can physically endure the NFL punishment, and walk away from guys with great college careers but simply don’t have the size to compete at the next level? It seems every year there are 2-4 picks based on “motor” and those guys never hold up. Having said that, if Donald is there at 14, and you were the Bears GM, would you skip him for Hageman or even Tuitt, guys with the frames for the NFL, or do you like the “motor” guy with the speed?

    • MB30SD

take dix or pryor @ 14 and go DT in Rd 2, even if you have to trade up to get ‘your guy’.

      Final answer.

      • NewBearInTown

QUESTION: What do you do if Dix, Pryor, Gilbert and Donald are all gone at 14?

        • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Easy. Mosely, Dennard, or trade down.

        • MB30SD

I think I go dennard… MAYBE mosely, but his injury history worries me, and if it worries me, it’s giving phil fits.

So probably dennard. I did hear him interviewed and I don’t think he speaks English, so there may be a communication gap to bridge.

          • gpldan

You hated Dennard! Besides, Data says he has injury issues.

          • MB30SD

I didn’t hate him, he sounded like a fucking 5 year old. What the fuck are they teaching (not teaching) these kids in school man. Are they even trying?

Hmmmm… do you reach for fuller here then?

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Trade down. We get a top player anyway, but an extra one on the second.

      • el_caney

I´m staring to get into the Dix Badwagon…but Trade for more picks sounds common sense in case Dix and Donald are gone

    • Trac

I was kinda thinking about this myself. I get the sense that GMs have a formula that allows them to do all of the above GP. I think every GM probably has one pick that they consider is a player with great upside that they consider to be a risk at where they daft him. Outside of that, I think they try to draft value for the most part.

      • gpldan

My question is: Should the coefficient in the spreadsheet for weight/build be factored up from where it is? – because GMs keep drafting guys who show skill in the NCAA but simply cannot hang in the NFL.

This question should be especially relevant to the Chicago Bears, who put Landon Cohen in there as a stop gap measure against the road grader that OLs ran against us. The Chicago Bears had a middle of the D that was soft as a marshmellow and perhaps we’ve mentally blocked it out, but it was like watching Ohio State play Bowling Green towards the end of the season and a discredit to the Bears tradition.

        • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Put it like that, then nobody is going to block Tuitt. People may very well block the fuck out of Donald – he wouldn’t appear to be able to beat NFL double-teams, whereas Tuitt would.

        • johnnywad

Yes. And I think Phil agrees. He’s had repeatedly mentioned “big, physical playmakers”. CD was either a huge mistake in this light, or he was drafted as a linebacker.
I would add to the equation some wiggle room. Perhaps the coefficient should be adjusted somewhat according to position.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

If he’s that quick …. then once he’s beaten his guy his lower weight becomes irrelevant – he’s already in there. I still think he could be effective in the run game. Obviously love to have Tuitt as well, but if you want Tuitt you have to trade down. Gut feeeling I’d rather have Tuitt than Donald at 3T. You can’t fuck with size. You can fuck with speed …but you cannot fuck with size. Tuitt has upside, Donald is maxed out. Time will always tell. Tuitt just on gut.

      • MB30SD

I’m getting a freak gut feel that you like stephen tuitt Irish… can’t place it, just a feeling I get I guess?

        • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

The closer we get the more curious it gets. We need a penetrating 3T. I first fell in love with Tuitt and then got side-tracked with Donald’s quickness – but that was in college. In the NFL it’s going to be harder to stop Tuitt, just the gut. If that’s the case then we really don’t want the 14th pick because if Donald’s there then you feel obliged to pick him … but trade DOWN in the first and we get our 3T plus an extra pick or two. Win win on the net net?

          • MB30SD

pryor ot dix. franchise FS in the top 15 maing. Put that position of doom to bed for us for the next 5-10.

Do it! DO IT! DOOO IT!

    • SC Dave

Methinks you’ll need a more concise version, GP.

      • QUESTION: small and fast rarely works out in the NFL, who are some ‘undersized’ prospects who you believe WILL succeed from this draft?

        • SC Dave

Beautiful! The shorter the question that gets across the point, the more time Scott has to answer them rather than listen. 🙂

  • gpldan

    Oh yeah, and this:

  • MB30SD

Oh, this couldn’t be more perfect.

It’s like tony romo and RGIII had a baby

    http://nfl.si.com/2014/04/28/dallas-cowboys-johnny-manziel-2014-nfl-draft/?eref=sihp

    • Trac

We can laugh about Jerra but drafting Johnny football makes a lot of $$$$sense$$$$ for the Cowboys. I also think Romo’s injury is worse than we know.

      • MB30SD

I get it, but dude. Duuuuuuuude.

QUESTION: Has Phil Emery displayed an exceptional ability to excell in the draft given his player selections in the last 2 previous drafts as the Bears GM? In your opinion, is there anything that sets him apart from other succesful GMs in the draft?

    • gpldan

Trac awarded +65 Homer points for the phrasing of that question.

“Question: Has Emery been great or REALLY REALLY great?”

      • Trac

Lol. Setting apart from succesful GM’s need not insinuate a positive. I would like to get the dudes take on any comparisons he may have with Emery to what he believers are successful GMs.

      • MB30SD

He’s been RR GREAT at FA and other areas in the offseason. He’s been just ok in the draft so far… even though we will hopefully see a lot more from last year’s crop this year under much more normal circumstances.

This draft should also give us another very good data point. If he knocks rounds 1 & 2 outta the park and finds another gem in the rest this year, then he’s trending toward ‘pretty damn good’ as an all-around GM in my eyes.

  • Johnathan Wood

QUESTION: who is one player that, in your opinion, the Bears simply can’t afford to pass on if he’s there at 14? (Please make it someone who’s actually a possibility to be around; we all know Clowney is an easy copout answer here)

    • NewBearInTown

Modified: We all know the Bears have needs all over the defense. Is there any offensive player in the draft that the Bears cannot afford to pass on in the first round or two?

      • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Ebron has to be a thinker if he’s there at 14. Our offense with Ebron … it just wouldn’t be fair.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

he’s 6’5 240lbs and has camp experience, came in with a week of study and didn’t suck at the helm then was called back later in the year so he has even more team time under his belt. He’s a professional football player. People were hanging themselves by their ties in closets when it was announced that Bears were going with Jay and Josh at QB. I wish we could go back to the old posts.
I liked his athleticism but that was about it. I didn’t think it was the wrong or right move but never could have predicted for him to do what he did.
I’ll take Palmer over college qb any day. I’ll take Palmer over a guy like Glennon because he has a quick release and has a lot more time of studying under his belt.
We just need a backup that can be Matt Moore for a couple of games and Brandon, Alshon, Matt and Martellus will take care of the rest until the Franch comes back. I predict an injury free season so it won’t even make a difference.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Sorry man, that don’t wash. McCown had a long career in the NFL behind him already. This guy has zip.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Don’t think there is one – another ticket in the draft is attractive, but we do need a 3T. paea ain’t the guy. So Donald, though he’s likely gone.

    • MB30SD

I’ve already given my final answer. We HAVE to take one of the two top FSs, whichever is left.

Other than that, seems like we might have gilbert to pick as well. I have to go with FS though because of the position for us for the last 10 years.

  • Johnathan Wood

QUESTION: much attention is paid to the first round, but historically rounds 2 and 3 are also a place to get a bulk of your starters. With that in mind, who are some players you are hearing linked to the Bears in those rounds? Who do you think would be a good fit for them?

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

I’d love to see us pick up one of those two 5’9 stocky little RBs with a nose for the endzone/first down marker and they can pass protect. Can’t remember their names and I’m not paid to. Mini-bangers, little big fuckers that are hard to see and harder to bring down. Forte is the cow-bell pass-catcher. Ford is the Walter type. We need the mini-tornado type to go in there and nose for a yard or two, or pick up the blitz with their low pads.If we trade down in the first and up from the lower rounds, we can just collect quality. My $0.02.

      • Andre WIlliams.

          http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/andre-williams?id=2543565

          Any good opponents?

          • Cormonster

I looked him up earlier, and he played good against Florida State but got shut down by a couple of good defenses.

          • MB30SD

that’s what i worry about when I see these guys with highlight tape against east west northern state of nun basket weaving vocational school for the blind.

It’s like, great, so I assume you didn’t have any highlights against good teams?

I’ve been big on that theme this year… after seeing CD look good against dogshit on his HL tape. Fool me once, shame on me… fool me twice… shame on… me?

Anyway, only big time players from schools who played big time players please. It’s not a lock or anything, but def more insurance I think.

And yes, I know that if you’re on a bama squad, some of your deficiencies are being covered up by the rest of the great players most likely strewn throughout your team, but that’s the thing… just getting a starting spot on that team means you’re most likely a bad ass.

          • Cormonster

Every team has several starters from small schools, but I agree those guys are harder to evaluate. Think Peanut, Forte, and Marshall.

          • MB30SD

yeah, but I bet those guys were full on standouts. Men amongst boys stuff. That needs to be the case bigtime. Also, times they are a changin. Just feel like in the last few years the big programs are where you find the guys that are much more NFL ready.

Not saying it’s the only place, just saying with the way top draft prospects now are expected to play and start in year 1, where before that def wasn’t the case. Anyway…

          • Based off the tape, I’m vouching for Andre Williams. Too many examples of small school RBs who become successful in the NFL, but I think Williams, FOR US, in the 3rd and beyond, would be perfect. A short yd/goal line back that has the body to pick up the blitz. He can learn the rest, but mostly he’ll be in when those tough yards are needed. Unless you guys are comfortable running that zone stretch on 3rd and 1 with Forte.

          • MB30SD

here’s my thought. Spending a 3rd on a ‘oh shit’ rb this year is the wrong way to go. I’m sure there’ll be some pretty interesting CB/ILB/DL guys there in 3, no?

Assuming we go FS/DT in 1/2, then getting a playable back up or starting nickle CB or maybe even our next IMLB could be huge next year when we’ll def be needing to get a new CB to replace nut, and MAYBE a new IMLB. I’m hoping bostic really takes a step forward behind DJW and he can take over next year.

That way we can get one or two D positions later in the draft next year, but focus on TE and our RB of the future. Assuming of course that phil will also blow it up in FA again and that we have no catastrophic injuries that necessitate picking up a position we’re not thinking of now.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

We were never going to fix this in one draft. We have to build sensibly and that means not forgetting the offense. Use the high picks on D, yes, but not all of them.

      • el_caney

I´d be mad of happines if Tyler Gaffney dress a bears jersey. this guy was a train in stanfford, can block and have soft hands…

  • Johnathan Wood

QUESTION: if the Bears are looking for depth at RB and/or TE with their picks in round 5 or 6, who are some guys expected to be drafted in that area that you think fit their offense?

  • Sactowns#1

QUESTION: With the Bears needing viable backups at QB, RB and TE can you envision a scenario where they draft offensive players in the first 3-4 rounds?

    • MB30SD

      no

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

I don’t see why. After thirty odd years of superbowls it seems to me that having a good defense (a) gets you to the superbowl, and (b) helps you win it once you’re in it. We have a good-great offense next year. the defense was stone last in the league. That’s bad. Minimum first three picks have to be on D or we’re just not addressing the problem IMHO. Now if you go Ebron, and then three defensive picks in a row, There’s that too. In that case I’d package my 2x6ths and 5th for a 4th and use that on a running back maybe.

      • Sactowns#1

Oh i know there would be a straight up revolt on Da Blog but I could see Phil taking best player available and filling some holes on offense. Perhaps he feels they already addressed a lot of D issues in free agency.

  • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt
    • MB30SD

      sad.

    • There’s something extra tragic tragic about this story. So, she wanted to post how happy she was, then her car crashes and burns seconds later. She’s dead at 32.

Meanwhile, a 73 years old truck driver who probably wasn’t feeling as chipper was “unharmed”.

  • MB30SD

QUESTION: what the fuck is this new format?

    • Trac

      I bet Uncle Larry knows.

  • MB30SD
    • gpldan
      • MB30SD

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

oh GP, every time I think I’ve quit you I get reeled back in. Why are you actually funny you damned scamp. It would be easier to dislike you if I didn’t appreciate your humor.

      • I remember that suck-ass game. As a matter of fact, I might have it in a box somewhere. Almost as terrible as Superman.

        http://youtu.be/TOjR9keffdw

      • Also, is a film crew investigating the Richard Gere + gerbil urban myth? Myth Busters, get on it.

        • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

I used to breed gerbils for cash when I was a kid. There’s no way you’re getting an adult up there and god help you if you did. It’s the greatest urban myth ever though.

  • QUESTION: it seems lately the first HB drafted is a surprise. Who do you think will be the first HB drafted and around what spot will he be drafted?

Follow up question. Who would be a steal at HB in the 3rd and beyond?

    • Trac

Ha. It’s gonna be a surprise, not tellin!

    • Cormonster

James White from WI might be there in rounds 4-6, and the Bears showed some interest. He’s kinda small but ran well between the tackles and he’s a really good reciever.

    • Johnathan Wood

when there’s not a consensus top player, that’s a near impossible question to answer. Different teams will have different guys on top, and so it depends on what team ends up biting the bullet first.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

      Carlos Hyde. 28th.

Love Butch’s idea of an Andre Williams, but we might get a guy about 225lbs and only 5’9 in the next round in Terrance West. A solid runner that can pass block in the 4th round after patching up the D in the first 3. Sounds fair.

  • QUESTION: how many QBs do you think are going to be drafted before the Bears at #14? Which team(s) (Texans, Jags, Browns, Raiders and Vikings) do you think are most likely to draft a QB?

  • QUESTION: Rocky III, or Rocky IV?

    • MB30SD

      Rocky

      • The original? I was about to put “and don’t choose Rocky trying to be all superior”.

      • And the correct answer is Rocky IV

        • gpldan

          Clubber Lang comin for you!

          • It is a tough decision. “Prediction? Pain!”

          • Cormonster

Three was definitely better, but four had the better montage. Thunderlips was also cool in three, and Micky was still around.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Lang and Mickey puts it over the edge.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Neither?

      • Booo. Get in the room with MB.

      • AlbertInTucson

I think the first 2 are the only ones I’ve ever watched start to finish.

        • You’ve never watched Rocky III or IV? That’s incredible Al! Do yourself a favor and watch them this week.

          • MB30SD

            he’s lying to you Al!!!

          • You know who that was.

          • MB30SD

            huh?

          • I voted you two thumbs down, like Rick James.

          • MB30SD

            Ahhhh… for those titties?

          • AlbertInTucson

2 ROCKYs was plenty for me, thank you.

Well, I DO have 4 seasons of ROCKY & BULLWINKLE.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

            Rocky V was good. 6 wasn’t bad.

      • CanadaBear

I saw the first one and wasn’t impressed. Never saw another one.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Rocky III. IV was a propaganda movie.

      • It worked. Putin is not Chair Man of the U.S.S.R now is he? Thanks to Rocky. U-S-A! U-S-A!

  • Nerds proving that Totalitarian Buddhism is the best of all governments.

    http://m.vice.com/read/the-totalitarian-buddhist-who-beat-sim-city

    • NewBearInTown

This is a really fascinating read. Would be curious to see what he came up with for other objectives. For example, for me, I always view Sim City as a challenge to create the best standard of living possible (which has a loose definition). So the rules can be modified to require something like “maximum population given a certain set of ‘minimum standards of living.'”

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

      That was brilliant!

  • QUESTION: who’s the best safety after Dix or Pryor?

    • MB30SD

      Almost identical grades:

      Dix: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/haha-clinton-dix?id=2543470

      Pryor: http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/calvin-pryor?id=2543469

Identical 40s, pryor is stronger, but Dix is much taller and has much more fill-out potential. Dix strikes me as the better midfielder, while pryor could probably me a SS in the NFL.

If I have my choice, I might go Dix as a pure FS and try and put 10-15LBs of muscle on him while trying to take of a 10th on his 40. Neither crazy feats.

      • I prefer Pryor. He can lay ppl out, and as you say, he can switch to SS which will give us more flexibility. He’s also got range (same 40 time as Dix), so he can cover the backend. #14 might be too high, but I vote Pryor. The Bama secondary history scares me just enough.

        • MB30SD

          Um, yes please

          http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14932/mark-barron

uhhhhh…. last FS out of bama was roman harper? Pro bowler and super bowl champ. Barron is kind of a stud. Not a byrd, but pretty solid on a meh team. I think dix turns into the same. I’m just a little scared Pryor turns into another Major Penis…. but it’s probably just PTSD.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Alabama_Crimson_Tide_players_in_the_NFL_Draft

Now, if there was a stud FS out of LSU I would be even more game. I mean Eric Reid AND Craig Steltz!!!!

          • Well, it’s easy to play S when you got a 20 point lead, and team sponsored bounties. But Pryor is closer to Roman Harper than Dix, yet some swear Dix is very under rate; I hear NOW’s official statement on him was, “We reviewed the tape of Dix, and we’re underwhelmed, really.”

          • MB30SD

Mmmmm… ok, well Pryor will most likely be the guy there when we pick anyway.

If donald, pryor, Gilbert and ebron are all on the board at 14. Which are you taking?

          • Donald, Pryor, Gilbert.

Only reason I pick Pryor before Gilbert is because CB is deep this draft – we can get a decent one in the 2nd/3rd. After Pryor/DIx, the S tier falloff seems steep.

          • MB30SD

Hmmmm… I personally think the same about DT… and because of donald’s size, he’s a liiiiittle bit of a reach at 14 too. I know someone’s going to take him before us, but I would be really fired up about a:

            1 – Pryor
2 – Tuitt (or similar big run stopping middle DT type)
            3 – SS or CB
            4 – IMLB/TE/RB/QB/Etc….

I think that basically takes care of creating a core for D in one offseason (well, maybe two if bostic/green/washington step up).

          • Tuitt’s not getting past the 9ers or Seahawks, IMO.

          • MB30SD

yeah, would you give up our 4th and one of our 6s to get him?

          • Yup. In a heart beat. He’s a gigantic DE. 6’5, 310. Can kick inside too.

But to get him at the end of the 1st, it’ll cost us our 2nd and 4rth/5th I think.

          • NewBearInTown

To get back into the first? Probably our 2nd and 3rd. We’re pretty far down the second round.

          • MB30SD

think he’ll go that early? I was thinking trade up to get into the first third of the 2nd round to get him. 4th and a 6th not enough?

          • el_caney

If u want a beast.. McCullers 6’6” 377 lb clog the line and have some skills to rush..

          • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Not if we trade down to that pick. We get him plus a free 2nd.

          • DaMurph

I say Emery surprises us and takes Ebron if he’s still there at 14.

      • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

Way to fail reading comprehension, dude.

    • gpldan from Siberia

That’s a good question, I vote that up.

  • MB30SD

Crazy like a fox. He was buying street cred while being a closet racist.

This is a dude so awful his son committed suicide rather than be associated with him anymore. He hired an Asian/Black hooker to nibble on the old sock he called his penis while telling her on open cellphones he hated the blacks and Magic Johnson.

    • 1. Clowney

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24544035/report-bears-wr-josh-morgan-charged-with-simple-assault-in-dc

Josh Morgan’s career in Chicago is already off to a rocky start. Just one week after signing with the Bears, Morgan has been charged simple assault after being involved in an altercation outside of a night club in Washington DC, according to NBCWashington.com.

During the incident, which took place in the early morning of April 27, Morgan allegedly punched a valet after the valet ‘looked’ at two women that were with Morgan.

    • “simple assault’? What’s “complex assault”? Some Street Fighter backflip knockout?

I’m sure every team has a detective, (or do teams share detectives?) to investigate such incidents before all the court stuff.

Now that would be an interview I would love to hear.

Jeff, try to interview a team detective, por favor.

    • a few thoughts:

      1) He claims he didn’t do it. I imagine this will get cleared up sooner or later, since this was right outside a club and likely is on tape.
      2) He was charged with a misdemeanor, so I would guess he was lying about not doing it.
      3) This likely doesn’t change his roster status IMO. This will get settled out of court.

    • SC Dave

      I’d rather have kept Earl.

      • Shady

Obviously, but it was hard to justify paying him what he was owed considering the numbers he put up on the field. The Bears wanted to renegotiate the contract, again, and Earl wasn’t having it. Fair enough.

        • MB30SD
      • He’s still available, if Earl will swallow his pride and do what the Bears wanted to in the first place, and pay Earl market value.

The Bears already paid him more than market value when they gave him that raise, but he was our only real receiver during the Hester experiment.

        • NewBearInTown

Earl should go elsewhere. A year on a team like Carolina with decent QB play will do wonders for his market value. If he comes to Chicago he’ll be lost in the shadow our big men.

    http://www.nfl.com/draft/story/0ap2000000344895/article/2014-nfl-draft-tiers-elite-prospects-blue-chips-and-red-chips

2014 NFL Draft tiers: Elite prospects, blue chips and red chips

    Elite prospects

These players should earn Pro Bowl recognition early and rank among the top five at their respective positions in two to three years.

    1) Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
    2) Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
    3) Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
    4) Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
    5) Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
    6) Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
    7) Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina

    Blue chips

These prospects are regarded as difference-makers based solely on their talent. They should start as rookies and make immediate contributions to their respective teams.

    1) Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
    2) Aaron Donald, DT, Pittsburgh
    3) Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
    4) Anthony Barr, OLB, UCLA
    5) Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
    6) Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama
    7) Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
    8) Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville
    9) C.J. Mosley, LB, Alabama
    10) Marqise Lee, WR, USC
    11) Odell Beckham, WR, LSU
    12) Darqueze Dennard, CB, Michigan State
    13) Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State
    14) Brandin Cooks, WR, Oregon State
    15) Zack Martin, OL, Notre Dame
    16) Blake Bortles, QB, UCF
    17) Xavier Su’a-Filo, OG, UCLA
    18) Timmy Jernigan, DT, Florida State

By the way, I like how Curtis Conway has a job at NFLN. He was always one of my favorite Bears. Isn’t he married to Ali’s daughter? Good for him.

    • NewBearInTown

Surprised to see Kyle Fuller at the top of the Red Chip list, but he really is a great prospect in the second half of the first round.
Also surprised that Jimmie Ward isn’t a red chip guy. That’s a good player there.

    • I don’t trust a few of those. Anthony Barr is extremely athletic, might be the next Matthews, but he’s only been playing LB for two years.

Mosley is not only a little undersized, but has a history of injuries.

Shazier, just something about him. How is that for scouting terminology.

Jernigan is a nowhere man. He’s not a nose, he’s not a 3tech. Kinda reminds me of Paea.

      Ha-ha I’m so-so about him.

The ProBowlers I agree with, and would put Donald and maybe Lewan in that tier.

Greg Robinson is a monster. When he learns to pass block, he’s going to be a mountain for the next 10 years.

      • MB30SD

my bro was UCLA undergrad and i visited often. back in the day, man that place. sigh.

anyway, I watch UCLA games when they’re on… he’s a fucking superstar athlete. I think he’s going to be a donnie edwards (my brother’s little bro in his frat) type. He’s a freak (barr).

Also, great to see what mora has done to bring them back after so long. That guy is a stud too.

        • He’s the kind of guy Emery loves, the guy McClellin was supposed to be.

Then again, Shea actually ran a faster 40 and benched more, so technically Shea is stronger and faster than Barr, not too mention he had more experience (LB).

          Check out their profiles.

          Barr
          http://www.nfl.com/draft/2014/profiles/anthony-barr?id=2543459

          Shea
          http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/Shea-McClellin?id=2532907

Barr is more explosive and agile and has a bigger frame though.

          • MB30SD

yeah, that’s the thing. I look like a brick shithouse, and while I could play ball… there were guys who just looked big and blocky and could fucking PLAY.

There’s a big difference. Some dudes are just monsters on the field.

            Barr looks to be… shea… is… not.

Fine, we’ll see this year is he’s really not. So far, he looks like a good athlete, but not a mathews type.

          • Of course he’s no Matthews. Matthews is from USC. bwhahaa (cue Victory song).

            http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/clay-matthews?id=80431

            I could have sworn Matthews ran a 4.5 40, maybe I mis-remembered.

Safety options after Dix and Pryor

    Dion Baily – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An7fW-ZwY3s

Not a fan frankly. He’s got decent size for the position, but takes poor angles and generally looks slow reacting to the quarterback. Also looks a little scared of contact. And the cardinal sin, he basically screws up a teammates interception at one point and then runs around celebrating a batted pass. Would need a lot of football IQ development to play on a pro team. 4-5 round grade.

    Jimmie Ward – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJCN2kOy4Uk

This guy can play. A little undersized (most of the class is undersized this year) but he has the tools to be a great safety. Takes good angles, doesn’t over pursue, excellent vision, excellent reflexes. He probably won’t last till we pick in the second round. I’d give up a fifth to get him early in the second round if we don’t take Dix or Pryor.

    Craig Loston – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LmFwfMR_D0 (2012 tape)

Not bad. Doesn’t have the reflexes that Ward has, and he can play. But he doesn’t jump out on the tape. I don’t see him as a difference maker on the field, just a role player. 3rd round grade.

    Deone Bucannon – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4x6J0cicds

Also not bad. Hard to tell from this tape as they basically have him lining up 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage. But he’s a good tackler, enjoys contact, doesn’t make any glaring errors. 4th round prospect (3rd if I see him do more than playing deep all day).

    • I really like Deone Bucannon in the 3rd and beyond.
Man, I think I really just want a S that can crush RBs and WRs like a grape…like a grape.
Imagine we trade down, draft Pryor, draft Easly/Ealy, then Buccannon.

We’d have our safeties for the next decade, and a decent rotational Dlineman.

      • MB30SD

        Jeeeeees Pleeeeeeeece!

        • Bucannon and Pryor patrolling…that would be a sight to behold. Buckle up your chin straps, lads.

          • MB30SD

This. Can you imagine going from cunte and wright to those two? Hee hee… I’m giddy at the prospect of it!

      • no way in hell Bucannon is there for Chicago in round 3. Might not even last to them in round 2.

        • NewBearInTown

I feel like I didn’t get a look at him because of where he was lined up in that game I found. Everything I’m reading suggests he has the tools to play a lot closer to the action.
Plus, I imagine his reflexes will get even faster if he doesn’t have to wear binoculars to see the play.

          • gpldan from Eastern Front

That Oregon tape didn’t make him look good playing deep deep center.

          • most people say he’s a better run defender than in pass coverage because WSU used him that way a lot. I think he’s more of a SS than FS, but also is good enough in coverage to not be a liability.

      • SC Dave

I want a safety that does not miss open field tackles by trying to crush someone

    • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

We could get Tuitt AND Jimmie Ward if we trade down.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

lol, no trading down Irish. Simply best player available that plays D line or D back. Then rinse, repeat, in 2nd round and rinse repeat in 3rd round. Boom.

        • Irish Sweetness 4 StephTuitt

But why? Is the person you pick at 14 better than the one you pick at 25 if you move down? You get an extra second round pick! If you trust your board, you can’t lose.

          • MB30SD

we’ve gone over this maings. Science. Someone found an article (might have been me actually) with the historical actuals of success based on where players were picked.

The drop off starts at #13. Of course there are outliers (cough enis, cough salaam), but for the most part, the top 15 picks in the draft have the highest chance of success. This is the first time in a very long time (that I can remember) that we have such a high pick (thanks lovie and JA!), so let’s use it.

THUS… if we pick a FS at 14 this year, we have the best chance of him becoming our franchise and solving the position for years to come. We trade back and the gambe increases exponentially, for both the picks we’d get.

          • SC Dave

Or, for that matter, a DT

  • One thing that irks me is this “Seattle began the trend for big CBs” shtick. Peanut is 6’2 200 and was playing at a PB level before the Legion of Boom even put on a Seachicken helmet. So, henceforth, everyone should call it the Peanut-effect.

  • MB30SD

    here’s one for you daddies.

Took my kids camping in the backyard last night. Did a test run for some real camping I’ve been thinking about in the next month or so. Put up the tent, we did s’mores before. lanterns, sleeping bags, airbeds, the whole shebang, etc… Taught them how to help put up and break down camp.

    HIGHLY recommend it.

Was a blast and the kids LOVED it, even though it was just in the backyard this time (but we live in a really quiet area where we can hear crickets, frogs, owls, coyotes, etc…). My ex was hard core with sleep training, and she did a great job so my kids have always slept exceptionally well and like clockwork 8pm – 6-8AM every night… BUT, they’ve never slept with either of us, and we’ve missed that cuddle time in lieu of helping them be good sleepers. I’ve always kinda been sad we didn’t do a little of it.

Anyway, wads really awesome to cuddle with both my babies. My 5 yr old daughter kicked me off “her” queen mattress after she finished cuddling with me for a bit and we had listened and talked about the animal noises… so my son (3.5) and I huddled together on the other little twin mattress all night. Man, nothing better than being close to your kids out in nature. Can’t wait to take them real camping, they’re going to freaking love it… maybe even almost as much as me.

    • MB30SD

      they pick up the phone?

      • Trac

Id like to get some behind the scene back channel info? You know that some GMs don’t bother with the ones they don’t like.

        • MB30SD

          I know nussink!

It was a joke. Hee hee, haa haa and all that old chap.

        • Trac

Ha. Both possibilities were in play so I doubled down.

QUESTION: What are the odds Lovie Smith will convince his new GM to draft a slow white safety in the 3rd round for the Bucs?

    • MB30SD

      I’d say about 100%.

QUESTION: Do you even understand how fucking ecstatic I am that lovie smith is not our problem any more?

      Answer THAT Jeff’s draft guy!

      • NewBearInTown

Lovie Smith is going to trade down and draft Dix at #13 just to watch MB’s head explode.

        • MB30SD

          Hahahahaha… NOOOOOOOOO!

    • johnnywad

Doubt he’ll wait til the 3rd.

  • MB30SD
    • johnnywad

Wait……an old, rich, white guy that doesn’t like black people? HOLY SHIT!!!!!! Despite his immense character flaws, isn’t he supposed to be able to keep his business? A recorded conversation, in private, should not legally terminate ones’ right to own a business. This is not the way shit works. If it is, there are A LOT of business owners that are squarely in the crosshairs.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

this is a totally unique situation.

        • johnnywad

Is it? I admit my ignorance if so. I haven’t paid much attention. In my experience, there are a shitload of racist, sexist, generally low character dudes that own or manage business.

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

yeah, possibly, but this is basketball. It’s different because of who was doing the shit talking and the racial makeup and relationship that blacks have to the game. It is just different. I know Mark Cuban was voicing concern about that biz aspect too but when it comes down to it, the shit he said, he worldview, doesn’t fit and is a direct slap in the face of a game viewed by the black community as their game and a huge part of the community identity.

          • johnnywad

I can see that. Fuck him.

QUESTION (for the gents one here) Historically Phil is a gambler, in fact I may start calling him Kenny Raodgers. So do you think it is more likely he sacrafices multiple picks to move up in the draft or do you think he picks up another pick (dont we already have like 7-8 picks this year?) and moves down in the draft (most likely meaning he’ll pick another mystery man)? And which would you rather see?

    • right now they have 7 picks. One each in the first five rounds, two in the 6th (Thanks Gabe Carimi!), and none in the 7th (traded for Dante Rosario).

Personally I would love to see them trade back in round 1. SF wants a WR and has the capital (and reportedly interest) to move up. PIT is reportedly looking WR at 15. Hmm… Would love to move back to 30, grab an extra 2nd from SF (and possibly 5th, 6th, or 7th as well), and have 3 picks in the first 2 rounds.

Unless Aaron Donald is still there at 14, of course. Then you find the fastest guy in your draft room and tell him to sprint to the podium.

      • MB30SD

whichever of the two top safeties is still left. Final Answer.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

and out of those two, if one is white…..

      • el_caney

Well it seems clear, the picture is pick Donald, or any of the two safeties, or best CB (Dennard or Justin) or Barr (if arrives at) or Trade back.

QUESTION – if the Bears hit on more picks this year than miss, would it be fair to call them “legitimate Super Bowl contenders?”

my apologies if this has already been asked…

    • MB30SD

      FQ!!!!!!!

      • FQD1911

MB!!!! Who do you like in the draft man?

        • MB30SD

Post more my maings. Come back to us.

Pryor or Dix. I’ll take either. Then move up and get ealy or ellis in the 2nd. Best available CB in the 3rd.

          You?

          • FQD1911

Pryor. Really would like for us to trade down, but only if we get a good deal. I trust Emery though…he’s the man.

          • MB30SD

excellent. I’d be fired up about dix or pryor. Sutton in 2.

Dead thread posting… what are you… irish or something? Hope you’re well maings.

  • SC Dave

So, had it been a black owner telling his squeeze not to bring white fucks to his games, what would the fine be, $100?

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

      dude

    • Trac

That guy is toxic Dave. Think about it. You gotta pay to play my man.
