DaBearsBlog Draft Weekend Ticket Contest

| May 7th, 2014

x

DaBearsBlog has given away tickets to a Bears game each of the past two seasons – through the draft party at Cortland’s Garage in 2012 and through our Ditka Lookalike party in Wicker Park this past December. (We’ll be doing another charitable event this fall. We’re still working through details.)

This year we are instituting a rather unique and interesting draft contest. It is also quite difficult.

Here are the rules.

HOW TO SUBMIT

In the comments below, simply type CONTEST: before making your selection. I can not shuffle through all of the commentary for your picks. This will enable me to run through the comments quickly.

ROUND ONE

In order to stay alive in this contest, you have to guess the first round selection of the Chicago Bears correctly. Quite simple. Guess the player.

Note: If the Bears trade out of the first round, all those submitting first round entries will advance.

Submission Example:

CONTEST: Calvin Pryor

SELECTION IS DUE IN THE COMMENTS SECTION BY 7:00 PM CT THURSDAY EVENING. NO LATE SELECTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

ROUNDS TWO & THREE

In order to make it to Saturday in this contest, you have to get the positions of both the Bears second and third round selections correct. You do not have to guess the players. You merely have to guess the positions.

Note I: For the sake of tiebreaking procedures (see below) also submit a player with the positions you’re choosing.

Note II: You will submit two players. If the Bears only make one pick in those two rounds, the position must be one of the two you’ve guessed. If the Bears make more than two picks in the two rounds, your two positions must be included.

Note III: DBB will be using the NFL.com positional label for all picks. So if a player is listed as a RB/KR on NFL.com I don’t care if you think the player will also be playing WR in the NFL. We can’t have anarchy.

Submission Example:

CONTEST: Jimmie Ward, Safety & Zach Mettenberger, QB (I will take them in order.)

SELECTIONS ARE DUE BY 6:00 PM CT FRIDAY EVENING. NO LATE SELECTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

ROUNDS FOUR THRU SIX

(The Bears currently have two sixth round picks and no seventh.)

You guess the four positions you believe the Bears will select in rounds four through six. Those selections will be scored as followed:

4 pts – Fourth round

3 pts – Fifth round

2 pts – Sixth round, selection one

1 pt – Sixth round, selection two

Submission Example:

CONTEST: RB, DE, G, DT (I will take them in order.)

SELECTIONS ARE DUE BY 11:00 AM CT SATURDAY MORNING. NO LATE SELECTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

THE TIEBREAKERS

Since this is an unsponsored contest, we won’t be giving away multiple sets of tickets. The following are the tiebreakers:

Tiebreaker 1: Most players guessed correctly from rounds 2-3. (Remember to submit players for rounds 2 and 3 even though you will only be judged on positions.)

Tiebreaker 2: 4th round position.

Tiebreaker 3: 5th round position.

Tiebreaker 4: 6th round, first pick position.

Tiebreaker 5: 6th round, second pick position.

THE PRIZE

Two (2) tickets to a Chicago Bears home game this season. DaBearsBlog will also be open to purchasing you two tickets to a road game should it be easier for you. If you’d like to attend the game with myself and my compatriots, that game would be sometime after mid-November.

GAME NOTE

Should any draft maneuvers by the Bears alter the game, DBB will post a note explaining those changes. Any questions you have about the contest, contact me – jeff@dabearsblog.com.

    CONTEST: Kyle Fuller

  • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

    CONTEST: Deone Bucannon

    • MB30SD

I won’t mind this if we trade back to get him and pick up a couple extra picks.

      • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

Which is why Phil will take him w/o trading back.

        • MB30SD

          hahahaha.. STOP IT!!!! Please!

      • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

You know Jim Harbaugh wants to trade u not down. He’s got an extra pick in the 2nd (56th) and three thirds. Maybe he gives us the 30th, 56th, 77th picks for our #14?

Mayock has Donald dropping to SF at 30 FWIW ….

      • Big Mike

        As long as your happy

  • CONTEST: Calvin Pryor

  • Peanut FTW

    CONTEST: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

    • MB30SD

This is my secret pick. I think pryor has slowly overtaken Dix as the pop choice. We’ll see. Might just be more well placed propaganda.

      • I think Dix will go before Pryor.

        • MB30SD

Yeah, that’s the easy money. we’ll see.

          • “In a poll of 19 NFL personnel men, 13 voted Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton-Dix the 2014 draft’s top safety.

            HHCD’s 13 votes dwarfed second-place finisher Calvin
Pryor’s (Louisville) three. Northern Illinois’ Jimmie Ward, Washington
State’s Deone Bucannon, and Florida State’s Lamarcus Joyner each
received one first-place vote. Although Clinton-Dix is not regarded as a
special athlete (4.58 forty, 33-inch vertical), he is the heavy
favorite to be the first safety drafted this Thursday” – Roto

          • MB30SD

again, yes I know… but maybe teams will like pryor’s more physical style of play. You just never know my maings.

          • I know I like Pryor’s more physical style. I know Fisher would too on the Rams esp in that division.

But SS is not usually drafted that high. Both of them could be there sitting for us too, and even drop the 20s. Wouldn’t surprise me. So many variables in this draft.

          • MB30SD

yep. if you had your druthers, you’d take pryor over dix?

          • Yeah, I would. Dix has more range (though he ran the same exact 40), has a better frame, and is a sure tackler with slightly better cover skills.

But Pryor can truly play both, SS and FS. He’s more explosive, more violent, I think he has better ball skills.

In our scheme, Pryor won’t be asked to go man much anyways. He can truly patrol back there, or come into the box and instill the fear of god.

Our division has changed a little too with the Pack and Lacey.

          • MB30SD

yeeeaaahhh… see, everything you listed makes me want Dix at FS and for us to find a big bad SS.

CBS has him projected going at what # in the 2nd…. yep, 51: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1737409/deone-bucannon

How would you feel about Dix @ #14 for FS, then trade up or get Buchannon @ 51 for our SS, then get our DT in the 3rd?

They are both about 6’1″ 215… would it be weird that our SS is a full 10th faster in the 40 than our SS? Hahaha.

That would be a serious Dbackfield with peanut and timmyJ. go from abject shit to terror in one offseason. I don’t know maings, I’m liking that thought.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

I’d like a pryor/Bucannon rookie backfield, but you absolutely have to find a DT to push Paea out of 3T. All I can think of is trade down from 14. Draft Bucannon Tuitt and make your FS somebody other than Dix/Pryor. A Joyner or a Ladler, somebody solid yet not somebody front page. Two starters and one in the mix from your first three picks. No weaknesses in that defense if you go CB in the fourth. trade down, not up.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

Lamarcus Joyner might be Emery’s sneaky pick in a lower round. He’s got a boner for the DL, he said so. It’s Donald or a trade down.

  • Jeff, any interesting dreams nearing draft day?

    • DaBearsBlog

Hard part this year as opposed to last year is I have no idea what’s going to happen in front of Bears. I think Bears may go a bit more chalk this year because talent they don’t expect to fall will fall into their lap.

      • The QBs are the wild cards. Manziel get’s drafted #1 overall, that could make all those other teams wanting to wait to the 2nd round jumpy.

I could easily envision Manziel, Bortles and Carr going before Bears. I could just as easily see them all go in the 2nd. This should be interesting.

        • DaBearsBlog

You just nailed it. I could see three QBs top ten or 1 QB in the first round.

          • Yeah, the Cards and Browns in the later 1st, or some team trades back into back end.

No one ‘mocks’ the Broncos drafting a qb, but if I were them, I would seriously consider it. Peyton has like 2 years, max, and who better to groom your future QB than Peyton?

          • Bear Down in Tampa

They drafted Brock Osweiler in the 2nd round in the 2012 draft. Think he’s their heir apparent.

  • MB30SD

    CONTEST: Calvin Pryor

    Rd 2: DT (sutton)
    Rd 3: CB (TBD)

    Bank it!

    • DaBearsBlog

You don’t have to submit rounds 2-3 yet but I like the enthusiasm.

      • MB30SD

I know. I was less submitting them to you, and more submitting them to the phil karma machine of hope and wishing.

If I say it, it will happen type stuff. A girl can dream Jeff.

      • I had all 6 rounds prepped before I realized this.

      • Trac

Yes, he’s no desert fox. Never play your cards til you have to. Hee hee.

    • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

      So much for loving Dix.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

      CONTEST: Aaron Donald

  • Also, I want to make fun of Bon Jovi, but he actually seems like a pretty cool guy.

  • Yikes! Jennings is beginning to look like a steal the more CBs are signed.

Not sure if anyone posted this in the last thread but:

Draft profiles of Matty and Briggs and a few others. They were pretty far off base with Lance and Jared Allen.

    • IBNO

Ha! Jared Allen is a good long-snapper! There’s the backup for Mannelly! That’s why Phil signed him!

    • I did post that in the last thread, but worth re-posting.
The biggest issue with Alshon (besides his weight) was his lack of separation. The pundits thought he would get smothered by much faster CBs in the NFL.

But when you’re a big WR with a vertical and paws that attack the high point, not much separation is needed. The weight issue was for real, but luckily for us, Bmarsh took it as a personal mission to make Alshon a machine.

  • If we could get Skov like we could have got Burfict…

“According to TFY Draft Insider’s Tony Pauline, “a number
of teams” believe there’s a “real chance” Stanford ILB Shayne Skov will
    go undrafted.

Skov had a big college name, but lacks NFL-caliber
athleticism and has injury red flags. “He’s a good guy but slow with
major medical red flags,” said one college scouting director. “The
whole (pre-draft) process has hurt him.” Skov didn’t work out at the
Combine. He ran a 5.09 forty at Stanford’s Pro Day.

    • MB30SD

wow. 5.09… damn man. I’m pretty sure my 5 yr old girl can keep up with that.

      • I think Burfict ran about the same. Difference is, Skov is the opposite character-wise. He’d be a steal if he went the way of Burfict (UFDA/7th).

        • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

Jeff is writing a Rocky like play about Vontaze. Labelled the t-word (thug) and slow and out of shape, he fought his way to the Pro Bowl using nothing but guts and desire.

          It’s called: Nobody’s Burfict

          • MB30SD

            The Burfict Weapon?

      • MB30SD

        CHEATER!!!!

Oh wait, maybe I got sutton from you. Ok, we’ll call it even.

        • I will be publishing a full mock before the draft tomorrow, so no cheating involved here.

          • MB30SD

coolio. I’m still looking to pick the right 3rd rd CB for us. Let’s see what you got.

          • Jaylen Watkins. Bears reportedly put him through a private workout and loved him.

5’11”, 4.41 40, so has the size/athleticism combo Emery loves. He also likes SEC guys.

          • MB30SD

I was hoping we’d draft/FA only peanut/sherman sized corners from now on. 6’2″ and up. I like that mold. no more little guys to get towered over.

          • 5’11 (he measured 5’11” 1/2) is pretty solid size for a CB.

My favorite non-1st round CB in the draft is pierre Desir, who is 6’1″. He’s probably a round 2 guy though.

          • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

Big receivers. Big DBs. Big men.

      • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

I’ll bet you can’t predict the beta decay of all the atoms in an infinitely large system!

        • I’ll bet I can, but it would be about as accurate as these here predictions I just made.

  • advance question for what is coming on day 3: What position would be acceptable to describe De’Anthony Thomas? RB? WR? OW? RB/WR?

    • el_caney

      Bell boy. too tiny.

  • For the Falcons to trade up from 6 to 1, the trade chart says that’s 1400 points, or their 2nd, 3rd this year, and 1st next year (according to Mayock).

Is a non-franchise QB worth that? I don’t think so.

    • MB30SD

they seem to like selling out their entire drafts for one dude… and that worked out well for them last year (yikes!)

  • Trac

While doing some research for the contest picks, I came across this. Some of you guys aren’t gonna like it.

Players Emery was involved with as a scout for the Chiefs and Falcons:
    Roddy White
    Frank Omiyale
    Scott Norwood
    Laurent Robinson
    Matt Ryan
    Eric Berry
    Johnathan Baldwin

    1)Demoted in Atlanta
2)Part of a 7 year run in Chicago where we missed on 6/8 first rounders
3)Home Runs appear to be White, Ryan(maybe), Berry, Jeffrey, Long.
4)So far he only has Laurent Robinson to show for being a late round talent selection and he’s on his 3rd team.

This is all I found on him as far as drafting goes in his 20 yrs of scouting and GM career. There may be a few other players here or there so if I missed any of note, I apologize.

    • the Bears have three guys drafted round 5 or later from the last 2 years expected to start this year: Mills, Frey, Wilson (I count nickelback and 3rd WR both starters since they play half-or more-of the snaps).

      • Trac

I was only looking in the rear view mirror for research purposes my man. Time will tell I guess.

    • Big Mike

Not sure how you did this, but the value of these picks is entirely dependent on what round he recommended them at.

      • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

That slam on Emery with the Chiefs has floated around for awhile.

Basically, he was one of many scouts filing reports. And Schottenheimer’s alignment with what he did and what Emery recommended is specious, at best.

        • MB30SD

+5 blog points for the proper use of the word specious in a post

          • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

            ‘spicious?

    • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

Laurent Robinson is an excellent receiver, stats aside. He’s been in the shadows at Dallas.
Roddy White was an NFl-leading receiver.
      Norwood. Legend.
      Meg Ryan. Meg Ryan.
      Eric Berry. Quality.
      Omelette. Legend (for being bad).

  • Interesting point Mayock made. Coaches and Scouts interpret tape differently.

For instance, Coaches like CB Fuller or CB Dennard because they’re more reliable, safer.
Scouts might prefer CB Roby or CB Gilbert because their “ceiling” is higher.
It’s not a black-and-white dichotomy, but it’s an interesting point.

Naturally, the GM has to decide whose report to value more.

    • Trac

This totally explains the Chicken Dinner Pick as Emery was scouting him while with the Chiefs before the Bears hired him.

    • MB30SD

why you always gotta bring race into things?!

Btw, erik is hanging with the kid on sat night. You should join us.

      • He’s going to go down to SD on Sat night?

        • MB30SD

yes. come on dooooown! you two can cuddle on the couch together.

          • what time is he going down there? I actually have fam down from chicago, but right now they’re elsewhere. hmmm.

          • MB30SD

I give the kids back at 7, so ready to roll by 7:30.

            don’t be a puss.

          • I might be able to make it (though I’m not sure when my chi fam wants to hang cuz they’re making the southern cali rounds).

maybe I can car pool with Artoo if I am able to make it.

          • MB30SD

            carpool from where?

          • From L.A. if he’s coming down from northern Cali, he can swing by my hood.
I’m basically trying not to drive to SD lol
But I’m not sure if I’m going to be free yet. I’ll let you guys know soon.

          • MB30SD

ok. do you have his contact info? (I assume so)

If he can’t and you still wanna hang, just jump on the train and we’ll come get you. You will need to find and chat up at least one hottie (who has a friend) in the way down tho.

  • Bear Down in Tampa

Lots of heat about the 49ers wanting to trade into the teens, not sure who the target is (Beckham Jr., Cooks?) but we should hold out for #30 and #61 for #14 but i would do it for #30 and #77, anyone think PE would actually pull the trigger on a trade?

    • DaMurph

Nope, because there’s a chance one of his six won’t be there that low. He wants impact now, not a maybe.

    • PIT is high on ODB at 15 (supposedly).

PHI at 23 and SF at 30 are too (supposedly). Both are willing to move up, and SF has a TON of draft ammo.

CHI sits at 14. Me like.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

#30 #56 #77 for #14 … yes … you have to. Then package your lower picks and make ALL your picks quality players.

  • TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline reports coach Lovie
Smith’s “wish” is for the Bucs to draft Pittsburgh DT Aaron Donald at
    No. 7 overall.

Pauline reports the Bucs ownership is “pushing for” Johnny
Manziel instead. In Tampa, Donald could play the three-technique spot
and push Gerald McCoy to nose tackle, giving the Bucs four players
capable of getting to the quarterback on the defensive line. No. 5 to
Oakland is about as high we could see Donald going with his floor being
No. 8 to the Vikings or No. 13 to the Rams.- roto

    • This would be an anti-lovie pick.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

      Like it.

  • Sactowns#1

I was typing Aaron Donald but then I realized Phil is a smart man and when you can get a better player and an extra pick by trading down you do it.

  • Cormonster

    CONTEST: Calvin Pryor

  • MB30SD

reposting a theory up here from my response to $ below:

“yeeeaaahhh… see, everything you listed makes me want Dix at FS and for us to find a big bad SS.
CBS has him projected going at what # in the 2nd…. yep, 51: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1737409/deone-bucannon

How would you feel about Dix @ #14 for FS, then trade up to get Buchannon or take him @ 51 for our SS, then get our DT in the 3rd?

They are both about 6’1″ 215… would it be weird that our SS is a full 10th faster in the 40 than our FS? Hahaha.

That would be a serious Dbackfield with peanut and timmyJ. go from abject shit to terror in one offseason. I don’t know maings, I’m liking that thought. Especially if you add williams off the waiver wire.”

    • Dix at FS and Buccanon at SS with first and 2nd, I wouldn’t mind that. I just don’t see Bucannon as a FS, but they would complement each other well. Dix as the rangy safety net, and Bucannon as a solid tackler who can play the box and zone.

Yeah, Bucannon ran faster, but on tape, he doesn’t look as fast. Maybe cuz he’s bigger? long strider?

      • MB30SD

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. they are both tall big dudes who are fast. that pair back there would be amazing. I’m all in as long as you draftnics feel we can get a solid DT in the 3rd? yes?

        • A rotational one, though not a playmaker. Then again, outside Donald, I’m not sold on any of the DTs

          • Will Sutton, rd 2. I’m sold on him. 2012 Sutton was every bit as good as 2013 Donald, and he’s back down to his 2012 weight.

      • I think Bucannon and Ward are both guys who can play FS or SS. Mundy is the same way, BTW.

    • IMO Bucannon will go in round 1, or by pick 40 at the latest.

    • Irish Sweetness 4 Tuitt

Dix/Buchannon … and the DT situation would be what ? No pass rush again, and safeties getting eaten up just the same.

      Fix the line. Numero Uno.

      • MB30SD

        you are killing me…. again.

We can find a big DT in the 3rd, AND pick up williams. that would be a monster D in one offseason… and we wouldn’t have to even think about the safety position for the next 5 years (hopefully)

This is a stretch-the-field slot guy, kick returner, and has a giant WTF factor (which we know, of course, is Emery all the way). And everyone knows with a burner out there we have a top 5 offense barring injury problems.

Although I don’t have to pick anyone else yet…

Round 2: Ego Ferguson, DT LSU
Yeah, I hate the idea of two guys in a row from the same school, especially a damned SEC member. But shit, the dude is a monster physically, and with a name like Ego (are you fucking kidding?) should bring some desperately needed swag.

Round 3: Ahmad Dixon, S, Baylor
Were he white, he’d be MB’s worst nightmare. But I’ll put him up despite not fulfilling that particular goal. Halas Hall loves to reach for safeties in round 3, and this guy might be it, if he lasts that long. Evidently a ballhawk, Dixon is big and clocked 4.41 in the 40..

[Of course, I don’t expect to win with this shit, but one never knows]

    • Shady

I like that you’re thinking out of the box (and trolling MB), but the Emery WTF factor has been WTF in terms of the player, not the position.

      • MB30SD

why do you haunt me? I was there, online, waiting for you last night. Where have you been in my life?

        • Shady

Let’s schedule something. Perhaps a little something after the draft tonight? Mmm, yes?

    • Shady

“I value quarterbacks, offensive line, secondary, defensive line and tight ends over wide receiver. But what about NFL teams? Who do they value?

Some teams agree with this concept, and put much less stock (and draft picks) into wide receivers. As it turns out, those teams win more games. Other teams disagree, and draft receivers early and often, seemingly in every draft. Interestingly, those teams lose the most games in the NFL.

Is this pure coincidence or a perfect example illustrating that some teams just don’t “get” how to optimally build an NFL roster? They’re not losing necessarily because they waste draft picks on wide receivers; they lose because they don’t understand the opportunity cost of drafting wide receivers early – it prevents then from selecting more important positions earlier in the draft.”

Kinda long, but some very interesting 2013 Bears and NFC North analytics here:

    http://linemakers.sportingnews.com/nfl/2014-05-06/nfl-draft-team-preview-needs-packers-lions-vikings-bears-quarterback-secondary

    Chicago Bears (8-8):

    2013 strengths using advanced analytics

    — Third in offensive 30-and-in TD percentage

    — Fourth in offensive red zone efficiency

    — Fifth in offensive pass protection efficiency

    — Sixth in offensive efficiency

    — Sixth in offensive yds/point

    — Seventh in offensive yds/pass attempt

    — TAKEAWAY: The Bears offense obviously was very strong last season. It was simply incredible the change in the offensive pass protection and what that did for first-year coach Marc Trestman.

    2013 weaknesses using advanced analytics

    — 32nd in defensive 30-and-in TD percentage

    — 32nd in defensive run efficiency

    — 30th in defensive EDSR

    — 29th in defensive yds/point

    — 26th in defensive red zone efficiency

    — 25th in defensive efficiency

    — TAKEAWAY: The Bears defense was absolutely horrendous. Making it worse, they didn’t even play strong offenses (they ranked 21st on avg). They tried to get much stronger along the line in free agency.

    2013 strength of schedule

    — The Bears offense went against the 23rd rated defenses.

    — The Bears defense faced the 21st rated opponent’s offenses.

    — TAKEAWAY: The Bears didn’t face much competition in terms of strength of schedule last season. I’m interested to see Trestman’s offense against stronger defenses in 2014.

    2013 play trends

    — The Bears passed the ball on 60 percent of their offensive plays, 11th most in the league.

    — In one-score games, they passed on 58 percent of offensive plays, 14th most in the league.

    — The Bears were one of the most balanced and successful teams on first-and-10. They ranked seventh when running and sixth when passing, and passed it 55 percent of the time.

    — That efficiency translated to second-and-short, where they ranked eighth when running AND when passing.

    — But on third-and-short, the bears ranked 30th in the league, converting just 50 percent of short yardage rushes for first down. The NFL average was 68 percent. But they were much better passing, converting 60 percent versus league average of 49 percent, fourth best.

    — TAKEAWAY: Trestman really is one of the more superior strategy coaches I saw last season and I love the efficiency on first down and second-and-short. The team needs to be better running on third-and-short.

    Interesting ATS/total results from 2013

    — The Bears were so bad defensively that 12 of 16 games went OVER the total.

    — The Bears were terrible on the road, going 1-5-2 ATS.

    — The Bears were 6-0 SU as favorites of more than 1 point, but were 1-6 SU as dogs. Ironically, their only outright win as a dog was when they were the largest dog (10.5 points).

    — Most Bears games were over at the half. They were 5-0 when winning at halftime, but 0-6 when losing by five-plus at halftime.

    — The Bears went 6-6 in one-score games, playing in the most one-score games of any team in the NFL last year.

    • That’s surprising that we played in the most one score games considering our D.
Then again, my heart can testify that it was indeed the case.

      • Ososfan

        Hub is a moron

    • MB30SD

      how?

Think about what we’ve already done/spent on dline, and who we can get in rd 2 bend. Sutton, tuitt, and a number of other huge DTs will be there either at our #51 pick or there for us to spend our 4th (and maybe one of our 6s) to move up.

There are only 2 franchise-level FSs in this draft and both will be gone by the time Pitt sits down.

      * FS is our #1 area of need that we’ve done nothing to address this offseason (or in the last 10 years)
      * There are only 2 rd 1 safeties to be had this year
      * We’ve already spent a ton of time and money on dline
      * Dline is deeeeep this draft
      * Donald has questions about his size and ability to do what he did in college in the NFL

Makes perfect sense to me maings.

That said, these guys (and us) have ZERO clue what’s actually going to go down tonight.

Hee HEE….. Man Christmas morning has arrived boys! Happy Man Xmas!!!

      • Bender McLugh

        Man Xmas indeed!
So the drop-off after Pryor & Dix is bigger than the drop-off after Donald and (who…?) ? Honest question

        • MB30SD

yes, you have buchannon and ward basically at level 2, then who? a bunch of ST guys and back ups, and maybe someone finds a diamond in the rough in 3+

At DT you have guys like Tuitt, Sutton, who else Data… help me out here, I’ve heard about 5-10 names on dline here.

        • Shady

‘Sheed Hageman. But it’s all speculamation. We don’t know how Emery has em ranked and won’t know the truth until these kids hit the field in the league.

          • Bender McLugh

            agreed

      • Trac

If we get Pryor or Dix, I’ll zip it and be a good little fan because by all accounts they are the top of this draft. However, neither one of them are beasts in the mold of Ronnie Lott or Ed Reed, let’s be clear on that. I’m guessing Emery is going to factor into the equation, BPA combined with the player that will have the strongest potential of changing the face of the D in week 1. Having said that, in the first round, selecting a CB is out. Selecting a SS is out. Selecting a 2nd level FS or DT is out. To me, if Pryor Dix and Donald are gone, Mosley will be a Chicago Bear.

        • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

You know who is a beast in that Ed Reed mold?

          Duone Bucannon.

Which is why he’s tonight’s pick.

          • Trac

I say grab BPA with the first pick and trade up in the 2nd to get him.

          • IBNO

I wouldn’t be sad. His film looks good. I saw him in the UW-WSU game and he was impressive.

That said, at 14 he’d be “a reach,” the same way Long was last year. He could be worth the pick, but everyone will scream that he could’ve been gotten later, why didn’t Phil trade down, etc. And to a point, I’d agree. But you gotta have a trade partner to trade down.

And a run on safeties means he won’t be there later. So I’m rooting for a run on QBs or OTs, allowing Phil to trade back and pick up good value like Bucannon.

          • Cormonster

Are you the guy who lives in Mad-town?

      • IBNO

I’m drinking your Kool-Aid. In fact, I can see the Bears picking up two safeties in this draft. I think Southward would be a good pick in the 5th. If he’s around. I think there might be a run on safeties.

  • IBNO

    CONTEST: Calvin Pryor

    • IBNO

Was thinking of waiting to see if any trades happened closer to draft start–because trades will throw everything out of whack.

I don’t think that Donald will be there at #14–his stock has been rising. Ditto with Pryor–I think that Emery sees what others do and values Pryor over Dix.

I’d really like Emery to trade back about 6-10 slots. He’d be able to get Dix or Bucannon at that pick, and with whatever compensation he’d get for the move back (trading up in the 2nd ideally, or getting a 3rd more likely) he’d be able to get one of the top-tier DTs after Donald.

In other words, regardless of where the Bears pick in Round 1, I think it’s gotta be a FS. The team need pushes that BPA philosophy out the door, because the dropoff in the FS stock is pretty steep after the first 4 (who will all be gone by mid-to-late Round 2… so it’s a pretty hard gamble that the Bears at 51 will get a guy who can play NOW at FS). So, FS with the first pick, and then pick from the deeper DT crop in Round 2.

Unless Donald’s available, and then I see him in Navy. But I think he’s gone by 14.

      • MB30SD

this exactly. every bit of it. You and I are usually on the same page about this stuff.

      • I’m on board with that. The trick is, finding a trade down partner. But if Donald/Dix/Pryor (Ebron?) is gone, then prospects we can swoop in the 20s.

Hageman, Tuitt, Ealy, Nix,Chriton, Bucannon, Ward, Mosley?

90% chance we can trade down and still land one of them.

        • MB30SD

in that scenario, we need to get buchannon. He COULD end up being a kam Chancellor type at FS for us. Then you go sutton in 2 and get a CB and maybe another DT or ILB in 3 with our extra.

          • Or we can pair our new 3rd with our 2nd and get into the back-end of the 1st, early 2nd and draft someone who fell.

In that scenario, we could end up with Ward and Bucannon and still have a third to take a flier for DL/CB.

Here’s my prediction that we’ll know in short order:

The Texans don’t want that pick. Clowney has too much risk in a very deep draft where there is consistent levels of talent up and down the 1st round. Texans are shopping that pick to the guys who want Clowney. RIght now, the scuttlebutt is Atlanta and Buffalo. I imagine today there is jockeying going on for exacting the largest price.

If I’m wrong, I’ll be spectacularly wrong and they will take JOHNNY FOOTBALL. But I don’t think so. I think they trade down.

    • Shady

Agree. I don’t think the Texans want to stay at #1 and draft yet another OLB in Clowney or Mack. And yes, according to John Clayton, the Texans would play Clowney at OLB. I think they’re holding out for as much as they can get so they can find a way to draft a QB without using the #1 overall pick.

Who cares who the Pack want! We should be picking the best player for our team, not picking so another team doesn’t get the player. The only teams we should worry about who they want is the 13 teams ahead of us, because that will determine who is available when we pick.

  • Bear Down in Tampa

BSPN’s Kiper and McShay have released their final mocks.

    Kiper says Kyle Fuller

I like the idea of Fuller if Tim Jennings is willing to slide inside to the slot guy in Nickel packages. I just think that this CB class is so deep you can get value at CB later (Dessir, SJB, Roberson, Huff, Exum, etc…) and should absolutely nab a safety straight away.

      • From what I’ve read, Lovie likes Donald (surprise surprise) but the GM is eyeing Manziel. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Trusting Lovie with the draft…maybe the Bucs just want him to coach and get out of the war room.

        • Shady

Remember, the Bucs hired Lovie before the hired the GM. Lovie also has the final say over every personnel decision. It was in da contract.

        • MB30SD

I hope they let him run the war room… I know it’s mean, but I really really do.

    • johnnywad

Why would they? They have already solved the quarterback position. Remember?

      • Mike Glennon?

        • johnnywad

          Josh

          • Haha I know. Just messing. They’re actually looking to unload Glennon. If it’s for a 5th, maybe we throw our hat in.

          • johnnywad

I would love to see Lovie draft Manziel. It would be a lot of fun watching a quiet, inept offensive mind, trying to coach a kid that thinks he’s football Jesus, all while the kid’s dad is at every practice giving Lovie the stink eye because he knows. Meanwhile, Josh is in the background face booking with BMarsh and Alshon about old times.

          • haha talk about a personality clash.
I know some (like MB) can’t stand Johnny Football, but I see a little McMahon in him, a little punk QB.

          • EnderWiggin

That is interesting. There are a few QBs out there worth a 5th. Glennon, Gloin(sp), Cousins, Pryor, hell maybe even Ponder. All would suit our needs well, I think.

  • Can’t wait till some team no one predicted trades up and fucks up every pundit’s mock.

Crazy team no one has trading up? hmmm…let’s say, Titans.

  • We need 3 QBs to go before us (Manziel, Bortles, Carrr).
4 OTs. (Robinson, Lewan, Matthews, Martin)
    3 WRs (Watkins, Evans, Odell)
    1 TE (Ebron)

That would set up the buffet with the good stuff, as opposed to left over croutons and cold pea soup.

    • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

If Phil comes up to 14 and it pans out that way, where he has Donald, Pryor, Dix, Hageman – anybody he wants – he may trade back 5 spots and pick up a 3rd rounder for it. That would be a nice move if he thinks he has all the rounds mapped well.

      • According to Jeff’s tweet, the Jets are looking to trade up. If Odell is still there for us, I think that trade happens (for a third).

Odell is the last of the WR blue-chip tier. Same might apply for Ebron.

  • Per Walter Football:

We’ve been asked if the players who failed their drug tests at the
Combine would drop in the 2014 NFL Draft. We reached out to our sources,
and they told us that Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan and
LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger could indeed drop because of the
“diluted sample.” Teams feel that a diluted sample indicates that the
player was trying to hide something by taking a masking agent.

    http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftrumormill.php

    • Bender McLugh

was Jernigan projected to be a late 1st or early 2nd?

      • A lot of early mocks had Jernnigan going to us, but I never really liked him. He’s not big enough to be a nose, not quick enough to be a 3-tech. He sorta reminds me of Paea. Just a guy.

We could get him in the 2nd, but was Paea worth a 2nd? (I know we traded up for him) that would be my question.

        • Bender McLugh

agreed. Not sure about Jernigan at all but sounds like a reach.

        • gpldan on DRAFT DAY

Paea was not worth a 2nd. To answer that question.

    • Trac

Retraction: I messed up and said Bridgewater failed a pee pee test earlier in the week but is was Mettenberger. My bad.

In other news… Got my tickets to the Bears/TB game on 11/23… Family season ticket connection. That sets the home game, Now to set the away game.

      • Bear Down in Tampa

The fans down here are hard up for Manziel, every time I call in and tell them that the Bucs are probably picking Aaron Donald they get all pissy.

      • Big Mike

Couple reasons I wanted that game. Lovie, TB QB situation. McCown, Glennon ( assistant coach on his 7th grade team ) the Manziel possibility. And it’s a tough travel weekend for a lot if folks because of thanksgiving the following Thursday

  • Schefter late is pretty accurate. This scares me.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Florida State DT Timmy Jernigan will be in play for the Bears at No. 14.

As Schefter put it, Jernigan would be a “curveball” pick
because he’s widely been projected as a Day 2 pick. But interior
disruption is a need for the Bears after they lost Henry Melton in free
agency. GM Phil Emery isn’t afraid to make outside the box picks, as

My take on Emery’s draft. He will not draft a DT at 14. No way in hell. I see it this way… 1st round CB, 2nd round S, 3rd round DT, 4th round WR, 5 th round RB. I dream for a trade of Mike Glennon for a 3rd rounder, but Lovie is a pussy…

    • I seriously doubt E drafts a CB (for various reasons).
Look at the interview list below. That’s a lot of CBs in the mid-lower rounds the Bears interviewed.
That signals to me that he’s planning to draft a CB in the 3rd and beyond, unless someone he really loves falls in his lap.
      That’s just my take though.

      • Trac

Yes, besides we have two starting corners already.

        • and what if Peanut told them he’s coming back next year most likely? so many variables.
Barber played CB for a looong time.
Still, CB in 3rd to mold, yes please.

      • Barb UMihai Mar

You need 3 starters at CB in this division…and they’ll be in a position to draft one of the best 2 of the draft. Can’t do that at the other positions and get value of high pick-actual value. CB and S are the only needs. I bet on CB.

Kyle Long 2,0. Hopefully it works out as well. Covert to safety and watch @mb go nuts

    • Barb UMihai Mar

the barbarian whooped your ass. PS: The pick is fantastic. It’s a clear sign that they’ll play nickel next year. Play run with the DL and nickel behind it. Play big boys football…like you should do with a great offense.

  • Barb UMihai Mar

told you so. PS: They didn’t grade a S this high, so they’ll get one tomorrow. That Buchanon kid or what’s his name. Or a big bodied DT, if they think Buchanon will be there in the 3rd.

    • Good call. Never thought they’d take Fuller esp when both Dix and Pryor were still there

      • el_caney

I think it was a reach, but it´s Emery´s call

      • Barb UMihai Mar

Rumers said that the S class is not very important. Emery’s pick makes it clear. He would have selected a S if there would have been a franchise type. It was secondary all the way… it was clear for me from day one (with the question mark Beckham where I don’t know if Emery could have managed his instincts)

    • Frank Schoenburg

      Nice call.

  • Barb UMihai Mar

I wanted the Rams not to pick DT or CB and laugh when Emery drafted the CB before Donald. LOL.

  • BerwynBomber

Fuller seems like a solid pick, but my thing is: did we draft a starter for this year? I was not a huge fan of the Peanut resigning (and yes, I think Peanut is the best CB in our history), but then why pick a CB as #1 this year? Granted, I think Peanut is gone after this year, but if we are all in (as we should be), if this is our window, why are we drafting for the future instead of the present? Unless they plan on switching Fuller to S, which could be a dicey proposition.

    • Nickle can play 50% of the snaps. Plays as much as the SAM

    • el_caney

Fuller will be fine.. he is an injury to start in the secondary as CB if not he is an incumbet in FS

    • Barb UMihai Mar

      that’s true only for a S. Only a S would be a ‘starter’.

      • BerwynBomber

Really? You don’t think a badass rook could beat out one of our DLers or LBers? Briggs and Allen would seem the only two guys who are absolute sure starters on those two units. There are certain guys I expect to start (Houston, Williams, etc.) but no way they would be absolute sure things if a draft pick came in and went ballistic in camp and preseason.
