    Yay?

    Championship!

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

      Can’t lose Woot and Pep.

  • Willie

    Ah, forgot my login.

    SECOND TRY!

    Yay?

    • MB30SD

      Willie!!! Happy man xmas!

  • There’s our 1 defensive starter. One more, Phil, and you’ll have made us all happy.

    Come on, safety!

  • Papa Bear is a Homo

Don’t matter who the fuck the bears get – will still be 8-8 if they are lucky, check out the schedule bwahaa haaa haa

    • link?

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

typical Packer fan with no sense of football honor or history.

    • MB30SD

      Baaaaaahahahahahahah….

      Three guesses:

Without this person your filthy Org wouldn’t even exist?

I give you 3 guesses because like all packer fans you’re as fucking dumb as a bag of claw hammers and probably even more ignorant.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

You’re right, he is a homo sapien. How astute of you. Rodgers on the other hand…

  • George Hernandez

The $7MM Annual Average is T13 among DE’s and the $15MM GTD is T13 among DE’s a tad pricey but dude is really gonna help shore up the run D and can reduce inside on passing downs.

  • AlbertInTucson

Where is Ware? Apparently the answer is no longer “Dallas”.

  • AlbertInTucson

“I vote for the masterpiece over the shitty sequels. RT @AMC_TV: Terrifying beach-goers since 1975. Which #JAWS film is your favorite?” The sequels are not even worth comparing / considering.

  • Bender McLugh

Just saw DJ Williams signed a one year deal with Da Bears.

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Solid vet presence. Stretch those muscles out my man, no torn anything this year.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

I give him 6 games. Then Bostic and Shea take over.

        • SC Dave

Depth is good though; if we did not learn that last season, we never will.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

lol, what if Shea is some badass linebacker….

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Then MB will have a heart attack. I’m this close to making a running bet with MB about Shea…he says bustsville, I say, ‘starter’.

          • Irish Sweetness

And I say starter at Mike ….. Bostic on the outside.

            Ryan Mundy? Really?

          • MB30SD

And what is it that you would like to wager my man?

None of this writing an essay shit… how about loser travels to the other guys town and has to wear a dress to a bears bar for a game.

now, how do you define starter and bust? Cause it’s been proven emery will play him no matter how useless he is.

  • AlbertInTucson

Hmm. Schefter has answered the question

    “Who’s HE talking to, Adam”

    with

“He’s talking to a lot of teams..”

    2 or 3 times already.

Way to narrow the field, Schefty.

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

I have to agree with Tom Waddle on this one. If McCown goes to Tampa or Tennessee would anyone be actually surprised at historically average production from him? Would the excuses immediately be the supporting cast? If so, does Chicago supporting cast from 2009 to 2012 mean anything???
I want the guy to succeed because he is a great success story and he’s a nice fucking guy but I’m sorry, he is jumping into a much different situation if he leaves Chicago.

    • gpldan

      Agreed.

He wants to stay with Trestman where he can play jump ball w. Alshon. The wideouts made him look better, as did the system.

      The Bucs would slaughter him.

Also, what’s that short guy on the Score, who is also on Channel 5? Holmes? He keeps saying that McCown really wants to start. Shut up Holmes. He doesn’t. He wants to make as much money as he can with a clipboard in his hand, to build a nest egg for his kids. That’s it.

      • Irish Sweetness

How much will Miles Austin be looking for? Can you imagine our offense with him stuck in the slot? Un-fucking-beatable. He’d give us depth on the outside too.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Depends on how one measures ‘success’. At this point in his career, and extra $2-5M can go a long way for him and his fam.

      • SC Dave

Especially if he keeps his body intact.

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

no doubt, that’s why I can’t fault him for testing the waters. I’m a year older than him and it’s an easy choice. You take care of your family first and you achieve your dreams. This is a job and a short term one at that. he has a chance to start so he has to take it. I don’t fault the man even though I would have loved to see him stay.

    • SC Dave

I would be surprised. Nor would I be surprised if he excels. Confidence can do wonderful things.

Too bad Ditka never understood that.

  • Trac

Here’s a fun interview with Lamar Houston.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XFLs78ZPyU

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

At this point with Houston on board I’d love to to sign Tuck for 4.5 Mil, then stock the DL and S positions in the draft. Anyone know what Woot is up to?

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

I have a bit of a Free Agency boner right now because I feel like a clearer picture will develop over the next couple of weeks of what this D is going to look like.
I like that Houston is young and is not a little tiny bitch and has no weird Lovie attachment so he is going to come in hungry and ready to kill.

  • bearsfantillend

    TJ Ward to the Broncos

    • Irish Sweetness

And they’re going after Ware ….

  • George Hernandez

    Here comes Mundy…

  • George Hernandez

    Linval to the Vikes, Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Fuck. Dude’s too fat anyways! (stomps feet).

  • Jordan Senn, ST captain for the Panthers, to the Bears on a 1-year-deal.

    • Bender McLugh

      Who?

      • dude. you don’t know the captain of the special teams for the Carolina Panthers?!?

        yeah. me neither.

        • gpldan

          Whew

  • SC Dave

Good god, to say nothing of that gawdawful noise at the beginning.

  • Bender McLugh

    Mindy signed

  • George Hernandez

Mundy, Houston, Senn….There better be more presents under the tree Papa Phil!!!

  • bearsfantillend

    “DaBearsBlog @dabearsblog
Ryan Mundy is not a risky signing but an interesting one. Will be mice barometer of Emery’s ability to evaluate young talent.”

young talent???? the guy is 29yrs old- not exactly young in the NFL. There should be PLENTY of NFL Game film to evaluate him. How will this be a barometer of Emery’s ability to evaluate ‘young’ talent.

    • younger than jeff?

    • Trac

I love that the Bears always seem to be known for drafting and signing special teams standouts. Not!

    • Irish Sweetness

      He’s small for a SS.

  • gpldan
    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

I thought I was clear that we were to pick up no more whites on the defense. These people are ruining the game with their stiff hips, lack of burst and slow 40 times.

  • George Hernandez

Joseph ended up getting 5/$31.5M we shouldve been in on that.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

That’s why I wanted to get him. DTs tend to be cheaper than DEs. But the draft is flush with DTs, so that played a factor I’m sure.

  • George Hernandez

TJ Ward got $5.5MM a year with DEN, that’s a bargain!

  • gpldan

    DeMarcus Ware cut.

How bad do we want to be a 3-4 team?

    • johnnywad

      Ware looks done.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

      $2M bad, nothing more.

  • does anyone have the explanation on why re-structuring peppers’ contract won’t help us with the cap?

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

he wont restructure. he hates Emery and is in the same position as Revis, which is that he has a huge fucking contract and played like shit last year and still wants to get paid like its 2009.

      • NewBearInTown

Led the team in sacks last year (had twice as many as Houston). Also one of our best run defenders. He’s not worth his salary, but he’s not a vet minimum guy either.

It is very possible that he’s willing to restructure, but that he and the team can’t settle on a deal. Its also possible that he wants to test the market before agreeing to a deal with the Bears.

But the fact that we’re still likely to cut him, but haven’t done so yet, makes me think that there is some genuine negotiating going on behind the scenes. If he’s at $5M for a base salary and Phil is at $3M, I can’t fault either side.

Then it becomes a game of chicken. We can’t do any more big deals until we cut him. But he might miss the market if he doesn’t get cut soon.

        • bearsfantillend

it was reported earlier today by ESPN lackies, that Peppers agent said he hasnt been contacted by Bears to take a pay cut or about being shopped around for a trade. so i don’t think they really want him around anymore, or just negotiation tactics.

          • SC Dave

Or ESPN not knowing what they are talking about…

        • Johnathan Wood

Houston had 6 sacks last year, Peppers 7.5.
          Your math is wrong.

Houston also had more hits+QB pressures, which is indicative of pass rushing more than sacks, which come and go

          • Johnathan Wood

and Houston is younger, cheaper, and getting better, not worse. Plus a better player against the run, has a better attitude, and is a better fit for the new hybrid scheme they’re going to.

          • Irish Sweetness

Yup, Pep was calling it in and has a bad foot. I’ll go with younger ends all the way.

          • NewBearInTown

I heard Houston was at 3.5. Might have been confusing him with another player. Either way, too much happening to check now.

But yeah, pressures are a better stat. I was using sacks based on the person I was responding to.

          • Cormonster

Your thinking of the Bengals guy that Lovie picked up.

        • Johnathan Wood

Cutting him to a $5M base salary would mean he agreed to cut his pay to less than half. That seems pretty unrealistic to me.

I’d love him to stick around, but I just don’t see it happening.

      • Johnathan Wood

Revis was not shit last year. He was one of the best CB in the game…when they put him in man instead of zone.

        • Bender McLugh

Didn’t Revis make the pro bowl last year?

          • Johnathan Wood

dunno. Pro BOwl means shit though. Long was not one of 10 best guards last year, nor Jennings CBs.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Cutting him will free up $8M. It’ll also cost us $8M in dead cap, but an extra $8M can go a long way.

Unless Pepp is willing to take an $8M slash in his salary, cutting him will help our cap.

Also, if he “restructures” and simply pushes his money towards next year, then we’ll be doing this dance all over again.

      • Johnathan Wood

they actually save $9.8M cutting him.

    • Johnathan Wood

Restructuring means you convert some of his salary to a signing bonus.

He has a $14M salary this year. Say you make $8M a signing bonus. That means he has a $6M salary now+ $4M cap from previous signing bonuses. Plus then you add in half the signing bonus, so cap hit drops from $18M to $14M. YOu just saved $4M! Cool!

Problem is that $4M goes on 2015 cap, when his salary is even bigger. His 2015 cap hit is then $24M, and cutting him would be an $8M cap hit.

      • that’s what i was looking for. thanks wood!

        • Bender McLugh

          yeah, sounds like he gone

          • Johnathan Wood

you can get him to agree to a pay cut, but that’s a whole other beast. The fact they’re shopping him suggests he said no to that.

      • Irish Sweetness

        “Dammit Spock – I’m a Doctor, not a mathematician!”

  • Max

    Ward’s 5.5 mil/year makes me feel a little ill….

Maybe Mundy will work out, but seriously, TJ, at that price, would have been legit

    • Johnathan Wood

it makes me laugh that he got same yearly salary as Malcolm Jenkins.

So the stupid overpay contracts so far:
      Oakland ($8M a year to a solid G)
      Phi (S)
      GB (CB)
      MIN (DE)

It makes me happy 2 of those are in division.

Not so happy Joseph is in MIN now though 🙁

    • NewBearInTown

Mundy is DJ Williams. He’s a veteran who can hold down the position until we draft someone solid. I would not be surprised to see us draft a safety in the second round (just like Bostic) to basically develop for a few weeks under Mundy.

      • Johnathan Wood

DJ Williams is an above-average LB when healthy. Mundy is not that.

Beat writers say he will compete for a job but otherwise be a core ST guy. Basically Craig Steltz only a better option at S if you need him there in a pinch.

      • Irish Sweetness

But we could have had a game-changer for 5-6 million in Ward. Just flat cut Peppers. If we draft a SS, he’s got to be coached up and has to adjust, maybe they don’t. With Ward, you just plug him in and there’s your production.

    • Johnathan Wood

they don’t have that much $$ right now. Sitting with <$3M in space at the moment.

      • NewBearInTown

Nobody knows where they are sitting. Won’t know until the splits on the Houston deal are done. But they can create space at will by restructuring Cutler’s deal or cutting Peppers.

        • Johnathan Wood

they’re in. Year 1 cap hit is $5M. They had $8M before the day started.

      • Max

Cut Pep… Free up another $9 mil.

I have to imagine they are going to cut him eventually

        • Johnathan Wood

yeah, and with that $9.8M they need 1-2 S, a CB, and 1-2 DE. Plus a swing T and backup TE.

          • Max

One safety in draft, one TE in draft. 2 D lineman in draft.

And I would like to see Britton resigned. He was solid.

When you usually see teams overspend for the top players at need positions, $5.5 for a starting strong safety would have been nice.

But I get what you are saying…

At this point, I just want Peanut back.

          • Johnathan Wood

the fan in me hates it, but Tillman is gone.

The pragmatist realizes this isn’t the worst thing. Re-sign Bowman, draft a rookie rds 2-4 somewhere. Jennings+Bowman were very solid last year.

          • Max

            Very solid?

Jennings was very solid last year. Past that, no one on the defense was solid. Bowman had some good moments, no doubt…. but I think it was a far cry from very solid.

And I like Bowman, but if he is one of our starters, he is going to get abused, especially with the Bears corners playing sides of the field, not man to man.

          • Johnathan Wood

            follow me here…

Pass rush among worst in NFL, possibly worst

S play among worst in NFL, possibly worst

LB play 2nd half of year among worst in NFL, possibly worst

Pass D overall still finished middle of the road based on YPA, TD, INT, passer rating.

So why was that? CB play. Their CBs were sneaky good last year despite being put in shitty situations.

          • Max

Maybe, but some of those numbers were skewed because teams didnt have to throw the ball, they were just running it down the Bears throats or tossing short passes. They didnt need to throw down the field.

Although, I think it is safe to say S play was the worst in the NFL. I still have nightmares about Conte/Wright

          • Johnathan Wood

all of these numbers are looking at efficiency, not volume.
In regards to S, I think a few other teams were equally bad (including GB).

          • Max

Pro Football focus had Conte ranked as the 165th out of 171 safetys in the NFL.

            Wright of course was 171st.

          • Johnathan Wood

PFF also said GB had a better OL than CHI pretty much across the board.

PFF grades are really whack sometimes. Don’t put too much stock in them.

          • Max

Ha! True story …. but in the last game of the season, it was the Bears’ safety making an error that lead to the go ahead score. On 4th down. From midfield.

Arguing about who was worse is pointless. The Bears S were terrible. Comparative or not. I am just thankful Wright is gone.

          • Johnathan Wood

can’t fix everything in one year, so why fix the one thing that wasn’t broken last year? Re-sign Bowman cheap, throw a rookie in there to groom and compete for PT, and you’re just fine at CB for now.

          • Max

Dont forget about Frey, he wasn’t great but he did show some promise in the nickle

          • Johnathan Wood

agreed. That’s why I’m not saying they need a slot CB.

          • Irish Sweetness

What rookie? What round are we drafting a corner in? TJ goes down and it’s open season on our corners. We NEED to sign Peanut.

          • IBNO

Pass D overall finished middle of the road because the run D was so fucking historically awful.

          • Irish Sweetness

No corners can keep receivers shut down for extended periods – we were giving QBs all day to throw.

But if Peanut walks, we’ll have problems no doubt ..

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Steve Smith on trading block. I say we trade a 7th and have him play slot.

OK. I really just want a Bears Steve Smith Jersey. Make it happen, Phil!

    • Bender McLugh

      Yes please. Sproles too

      • Johnathan Wood

Sproles would be awesome, but a luxury addition. THey don’t have $$ for luxury additions right now.

        • Bender McLugh

would be awesome though, definitely not priority

        • NewBearInTown

We do need bodies at RB though. But I agree, we likely don’t have the cash to make it happen.

          • Johnathan Wood

RBs are some of hte cheapest and most interchangeable commodities in the NFL.

Unless you’re one of about 10 guys who’s good (like Forte), you’re just a body. Draft a guy in round 5-6, let him and Ford compete for backup carries, and you’ll get 90% (or more) of the production as paying a veteran 2-5x the money.

          • NewBearInTown

That’s the prevailing opinion. But if you believe Sproles is one of the 10, and you’re going all in on Trestman’s O, its worth the extra money.

We just don’t have the extra money.

          • Johnathan Wood

Sproles is a useful player. He’s not a true stud, especially not anymore.
I want a backup who can handle the load if Forte goes down. And can help save him from short-yardage stuff. Sproles does neither.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ford is easily as good a *runner* – if not better – than Forte. He’s the backup. What we don’t have is a banger.

          • CanadaBear

And you’re basing that on a few runs during exhibition season. Did Forte fuck your sister?

          • Irish Sweetness

Nor do we need a midget having just cut Bush. Are there any behemoth backs we could draft?

    • Johnathan Wood

old, overpriced, and really not that good anymore.

    • DaMurph

      Bad karma, hes a cancer!

    • SC Dave

Earl is fine for the slot; we have MUCH more pressing needs.

  • MB30SD

    Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 37m
Bears free-agent CB Charles Tillman visiting Tampa Bay, per source. Revis replacement?

    • Johnathan Wood

give up a stud 28 y/o CB for nothing so you can sign a 33 year old instead? BRILLIANT!!!

      • MB30SD

        there’s the lovie magic.

Shaking his stuff already. Yay tampa!

      • NewBearInTown

Lovie made a comment about players “not fitting his system” 2-3 days ago. Lovie is saving $10M+ in cap space and hoping that Revis’s talents would have been mostly wasted in his system anyway.

Still, Lovie is sitting on tons of cap space. I’m surprised he didn’t try it out for one year.

Plus the cornerback market is stacked this year. Revis is probably the best of the bunch (if the ACL issues are gone, which they appeared to be by the end of 2013), but I’m not so sure he gets $16M/yr.

        • Johnathan Wood

still, they’re giving away a top player in his prime for nothing. That’s never a good idea.

          • NewBearInTown

You think the Colts made the wrong move cutting Manning?

          • bearsfantillend

Manning was and is no longer in his prime and coming off 3 or 4 neck surgeries. Colts made the right move.

          • Johnathan Wood

totally different situation with Manning. He was over 35 and had health concerns, plus a looming $25M payment.

And they had #1 pick in draft with Luck-a younger replacement-waiting.

          • NewBearInTown

Revis is the same. Whatever you think, Lovie thinks he has the horses to play CB without Revis. $16M for a corner is probably equivalent to more than $25M for a QB. And they’ve got a first rounder themselves if they want to spend it. This is a strong draft at corner.

          • Irish Sweetness

He just set the season record for passing TDs!!!

          • bearsfantillend

SO!! Manning is no longer in his physical prime, he does not have the arm he used to have, a lot of his passes look like injured ducks, the Broncos run an offence that is predicated on spreading the receivers out and short passes. He was able to make up for his physical limitations based on the offence they ran and his mental abilities. That does not mean he is still in his prime. The Colts would not have been in SB with Manning as QB. When you have the 1st overall Pick in the draft and the opportunity to draft someone of Luck’s abilities you take it. You don’t take a chance on a 35+yr old QB coming off several surgeries, and not knowing if he would even be able to throw the ball. The Colts made the right decision to move on.

          • Irish Sweetness

The Broncos were in the superbowl this year, the Colts weren’t.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

Alterraun Verner just signed with the Bucs. That’s their big name corner now. Tillman would be the third wheel right? Do you think he hates Emery so much that he’d play 3rd fiddle in Tampa?

  • gpldan

    What if Bears kept Peppers?

The only way to enjoy a Chicago dog!

    That would suck.

    • MB30SD

      Jimmy. Superfy. Snuka.

    • AlbertInTucson

He’s currently due $16m. THAT Ain’t gonna happen.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Dude, Jimmy Fly? It’s all about the Ultimate Warrior!

  • MB30SD

dude, I know some people dont give a shit, but is mundy a FS or SS? I can’t find it anywhere, they just say safety.

    • Bender McLugh
      • Bender McLugh

So FS last year, FS/SS year before

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Like I said, Conte will still start lol

          • Johnathan Wood

I think they will have Conte compete with somebody for FS and Mundy with somebody at SS.

IMO likely to wait until after the draft. Draft a guy, sign the other (FS if draft SS, or vice-versa) after the draft, let the two positions work themselves out in camp.

          • Irish Sweetness

There are no good safeties left in FA … we’re looking at rooks or 2nd class vet safeties again .. and if Peanut goes, we’ll have the worst secondary in the NFL by some way.

          • George Hernandez

            Clemons from Miami…

          • Johnathan Wood

not at all. THey’ll have mediocre safeties and good solid CBs. That’s just fine with a good front 7.

    • Johnathan Wood

he’s mostly a SS, from what I’ve seen. That’s what all the Bears beat writers have said. Has played some FS in the past too though.

Big-name beat guys (Michael C. Wright, etc.) all think he’s Steltz replacement who will get a chance to compete for SS job and, if he loses it, be a better S backup while equally good on ST.

    • MB30SD

      thanks guys

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Blount as the Hammer? He SHOULD be cheap. Save us a late draft pick too. Blount/Ford on 3rd and short.

    • Johnathan Wood

I would love Blount, but dunno how cheap he’ll be. He had a big playoff run last year.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

He was a MONSTER. What is he, like 240, and runs a 4.4? He seemed to get over the fumbling issue. If he’s cheap, man, we would be unstoppable on short downs, Garza or no Garza.

        • AlbertInTucson

Blount didn’t come to the Pats with a huge contract, did he? If so, why are they cutting him loose after his performance down the stretch?

          • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Pats do a lot of head-scratching moves, like letting Welker and Seymour walk

  • NewBearInTown

Jeff retweeting that Peppers has been informed he will be released.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Yup. Just checked my twitterverse. Pepp is gone.

  • Trac

Releasing Peppers was a move that had to be made after replacing the position with Houston and probably before signing a DB. The question is…..who will that player be? Any takers?

  • Trac

Can we sign Miles Austin for a bag of balls? That would be Cray Cray to be able to line him up with the Beast, Uni, and Alshon on 1st downs. Oh my!

    • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

rumor that Bears considering Domenik Hixon at WR. That would be even crazier.

      • Irish Sweetness

Hakeem Nicks hasn’t been signed yet either, has he? Love me some Miles Austin though.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

You know why signing Houston might be a little better than signing Bennett? 1. Cheaper? 2. The Pack also wanted Houston.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Also, reposting from a previous thread.

I checked out Houston’s measurables. He is 6’3 280-300 – has 33 inch arms and 10 inch hands.

      Donald is 6’1 285 – has 32 5/8 arms, 9 7/8 hands.

In other words, they seem very much a like in measurables, though Houston is 2 inches taller so can pack a little more weight.

      Food for thought.

      • Irish Sweetness

Another way of looking at that is .. Houston is 4 inches shorter than Pep.

I just think Donald gets swallowed up by an NFL line – what he did in college is almost irrelevant, this is a man’s league. Sign Soliai for small money (3M), draft your DE and DT in the first two rounds. Draft a top SS in third, put up with Conte for a year .. then go FS in Round 1 next year. Likey?

        • George Hernandez

          Soliai already signed with Atlanta.

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Yeah, I don’t see Costanzo back. He was scrappy, and I like that for specials. Hopefully Senn has some scrap to him.

          • SC Dave

Ah well… glad that Blake stuck for a little while to get himself (hopefully) a nice nest egg.

    • NewBearInTown

Look at the amount of dead money we’re shedding this year. Emery is setting himself up for another big year in 2015. Bush was an Emery signing, but the rest of these guys are all Angelo. If Lovie came back after 2015, he would not recognize the team.

      • bearsfantillend

could be a big year in 2015, But Marshal will be a FA and Jeffery will be looking for an extension after this year since he will be going into his final year of his rookie contract. Jeffery alone will be looking for a HUGE payday, because there is no way he will keep playing for < 1.5 M a year like he is now. so my guess between the 2 of them a lot of that 12.64M will be spoken for.

        • burntorangenavyblue

Marshall will finish out as a Bear with Cutler, and Jeffrey will be the offensive leader and star of the Bears offense. He has proven himself and he will be the #1. This is Emery’s pick, so Emery will surely consider Alshon as a feather in his cap w/ this pick. The Bears will pay up for him, and he is a fan favorite

          • burntorangenavyblue

I’m really tired right now….Emery picked Jeffrey, right? My bad if wrong, haha

          • NewBearInTown

Lorin Cox tweet (and then there were three…)

Peppers’ release leaves only Earl Bennett, Chris Conte, and Stephen Paea
as the only Jerry Angelo signed contracts left on the roster

    • NewBearInTown

A bit misleading. Cutler, Gould, Briggs, Jennings… those are all Angelo guys that stuck around. But yeah, posted below. This is a brand new team in probably one more year.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Yes, I think what he meant was Angelo draft picks? (though some of those you mentioned were picks too).

        • Johnathan Wood

only Briggs. And his current deal was signed with Angelo.
Forte is an Angelo draft pick.

        • NewBearInTown

What he meant was players whose current contracts were signed by Angelo. Briggs redid his deal in Emery’s first year. Forte famously held out in Emery’s first year and signed his current deal. Cutler, Gould, Jennings… those guys also have signed new deals with Emery.
But to say we only have three Angelo contracts left implies more of our current talent comes from Emery than is really true. Some of Emery’s best moves have been extensions for Angelo guys. You have to give Angelo credit for those guys too.

          • Irish Sweetness

Angelo doesn’t get any credit for sucking at his job 95% of the time, mang.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/05/the-free-agent-hot-100-3/

Without getting caught up in the ratings, and understanding that recent cuts have not been added to the list (Peppers, Revis, Ware), there is a lot of talent still out there.

And despite the Sam Shields signing in GB, the defensive back dominos have not started to fall. I think the first contracts were larger than expected, everyone is waiting/hoping for a market correction.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

All is silent on the Peanut front. The Packers grossly over paid for CB. It’s a weird FA because both WR and CB are strangely stagnant.

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

The draft is deep at both, and I wonder if that has influenced FA…

      • Johnathan Wood

Peanut is flying to TB. He’s gone.

        • NewBearInTown

Then TB signed Verner. Not sure what the story is there. Does Tampa need to corners?

          • burntorangenavyblue

Just Lovie trying to bring his boys back for old time’s sake….if TB has spent what they did today, I don’t see Tillman getting any more money than what the Bears could offer him from any other team, so I hope he stays and retires as a Bear.

    Mundy scoop.

“Last season, Mundy had 70 tackles, four of them going for a loss. He also had an interception and two passes defensed.

    Prior
to joining the Giants, Mundy spent four seasons with the Steelers,
appearing in 64 games as a key special-teams contributor. He has 64
tackles on special teams, which are tied for third in the league since
    ’09.

Mundy has not missed a game in his NFL career. Last
year, he was Pro Football Focus’ 37th-ranked safety. Quarterbacks had a
113.1 rating when throwing at Mundy by PFF’s metrics. He had only five
    missed tackles.”

#Bucs Smith/Licht turning over roster. Wed could bring signings of McCown, Collins, Tillman, Hester, Dietrich-Smith and Melton.

      • burntorangenavyblue

If I were a Bucs fan, I’d be pissed if they brought all of Lovie’s old guys in. The “Good Ol’ Boys’ Club” was becoming a problem in Lovie’s later years as the Bears head coach….Lovie did not hold guys accountable for their performances and he had tunnel vision on only game planning that the D would carry the team for 10 years.

Now we as Bears fans are still facing the “Good Ol’ Boys’ Club” mentality as current or former players are nearing their tenure here.

As a Bucs fan, I’d expect Smith to as a head coach not rely on his old guys. He is a head coach for crying out loud. This is the NFL and business must be business. Get the right guys necessary for the job, not the guys you used to know from other team for the sake of it.

I have a co-worker who is a Bucs fan and he tells me that he’s happy w/ the hire and that the Bears were crazy to let Lovie go. I don’t really get into it w/ him about that because he’s also from northern Minnesota and hockey is his number 1 sport, so….yeah kinda see why he may think that, haha.

        • MB30SD

Don’t worry. .. Every time he brings it up just say ok. In a year or two he’ll be coming to you for counseling

    • Johnathan Wood

yet they dumped their best player on either side of the ball. makes no sense.

Still, that could be a good team next year. Factor in Lovie on offense… I’d say 10-11 wins, a studly D, and an early playoff exit.

      • NewBearInTown

Sounds about right. But everyone said the same thing about Tampa last year. I think QB issues could sink them.

        • Irish Sweetness

Not if they sign McCown off us!

          • burntorangenavyblue

Even if they did get McCown…there’s still Lovie, as head coach…..meaning that the OC better have the right mindset and tools to help McCown b/c Lovie doesn’t have the brains to keep the O firing on all cylinders

          • SC Dave

The worst part is that Lovie does not seem to know how to pick an OC. Perhaps if the GM picks one for him, things would be better. Unless, of course, that GM is Jerrah Angelo.

Curious how much cash Allen wants. But I almost would prefer Peppers back if the money is equal.

      • tobijohn

According to Pep’s agent, the Bears never broached a salary reduction. Like Hester, they just plain didn’t want him anymore, at any price. I wonder why?

        • NewBearInTown

Presumably wanted to get younger, get new faces in the room. Maybe they didn’t want to insult him with their valuation, so they just let him loose.
Still, a couple of weeks without a contract might change things. Especially if the Bears can’t get another proven pass rusher in FA.

Kind of a head scratcher, SEA and CHI don’t seem like likely landing spots for this guy. I’m wondering how legit this is, could be Allen’s camp giving bogus info trying to inflate a market for 30 something pass rusher.

      • burntorangenavyblue

I dunno….maybe after the clusterfuck of the years of Vikings management and coaches screwing that team up, Allen just needs a new scene and wants a chance at being on a contending team. Maybe it’ll motivate him to play his ass off to play for a city like Chicago and help be a key player in restoring the Bears defense. The amount of money, however, would make me think “yay” or “nay” on him joining the Bears.

The guy pissed me off quite a few times watching him play, but nothing like watching Matthews or Suh/Fairly play against Chicago…I loath them

        • burntorangenavyblue

Peppers seems to have become surely a Lovie’s boy while Lovie was with the team, and his lack of production this year seems evident. Allen may be wanting a new scene, coach, and etc. to get his blood flowing again

    • tobijohn

  • NewBearInTown

Tampa Bay still has plenty of cap room to make some moves. Honestly, even if they keep Revis I think they’ll have room to make moves.
Assuming they cut Revis, they had $36M to play with today. They haven’t spent half of that yet.

    • burntorangenavyblue

I hope on all hope that McCown, despite doing a great job last year and he should get paid well, understands that the track record of the way Lovie Smith has handled the offense while with the Bears would make him think twice about signing with TB….

      • NewBearInTown

He’s going to Houston. Unless Lovie doesn’t let him leave the building, it just makes too much sense for him to go anywhere else.

        • burntorangenavyblue

That’d make sense to go to Houston, as a backup….b/c I am pretty sure Houston is going to pick Manziel for the first pick….Too much of a perfect storm of “success” to be had for Houston and Manziel. Local product that will sell out seats, charismatic personality from a PR standpoint, shitload of jerseys and endorsement sales, and the team is going to hope that he is Andrew Luck 2.0. If he gets drafted, he will be pushed into the starter role because of the timing of everything for that team.

  • NewBearInTown

In general, I’m surprised at free agency this year. There was definitely a lot of activity today, but also a lot of “wait and see” from players and teams.
    – Not much has happened in the WR market yet.
    – No QB signings at all
    – Peppers, Allen and Ware all cut and I suspect will be unsigned for several days
    – Several teams with $30M+ in cap space who have done almost nothing. The Jets are getting a lot of press for this.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

The Raiders had the money of a small country, yet they let Houston and Valdheer walk. WTF?

      • NewBearInTown

That’s another head scratcher. I was a big fan of McKenzie to be Bears GM. Really glad we dodged that bullet.

        • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

It’s – odd. They MUST spend 89% of their cap, right? Maybe they’ll throw money at Ware, Pepp, Peanut and snag Revis. They’re the only team who actually can.

Though that’s not the Packer ‘way’

          • NewBearInTown

They need to spend 89% average over four years. I’m not sure, but I think this is the first year that counts. So technically they can spend 56% this year and 100% the next three years to comply with the rule.

I strongly prefer Peanut, but Antonio Cromartie strikes me as a solid pickup for small money. We need at least one CB in FA.

  • NewBearInTown

Would love to see Wootton and Idonije back this year. Both are solid role-players, though we likely wouldn’t need both since they fill similar roles.

  • NewBearInTown

Babin and Tuck are both possibilities at DE. Neither is a big pass rusher though, and that’s something we need more of. Matt Shaugnessy is someone I’ve kept an eye on as well.
Interesting to see Mincey is a free agent also.

  • NewBearInTown

We may have been outspent in the safety market. I don’t see anyone else worth a big payday.
Which increases our chances of looking at safety in the first round.

  • NewBearInTown

And last thought for the night. There is only one offensive player I am interested in (McCown aside). LaGarrette Blount could be a great change of pace for Matt Forte. I credit 4ever85 for that idea.
I’d take Blount over Sproles as well after talking it out on the blog. We need a hammer. Improvements at guard and center help that – a power back will help too.

    • Shady

Don’t like the idea of spending $ on FA RBs, hasn’t really worked out since Forte joined. Sproles intrigues me because of his versitility, but I’d rather give Ford and/or another hungry late round UDFA a shot and save the dough for depth on D.

      • SC Dave

While I agree, I would feel better if I knew Matt had a decent backup. Maybe Ford is it, but maybe not.

My opinion is that many would be shocked how much the O would drop off without Forte in the lineup.

    • Irish Sweetness

Damn! WE’VE GOT MICHAEL FORD !! And he’s a more exciting runner than Forte !!

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

        Irish….

      • Johnathan Wood

Matt Forte was the 2nd or 3rd best runner in the NFL last year, depending on who you ask.

Michael Ford was undrafted and has zero career carries.

        Stop. Please.

        • Johnathan Wood

don’t get me wrong: I like Ford and want to see him compete for the backup RB job with whatever other rookie they bring in this year. But to compare him to one of the top 5 RB in the NFL is just not fair.

        • Irish Sweetness

I saw enough in pre-season to know two things :

          1. He’s got nice moves (jinks) for a solid body.
          2. Not only has he got moves but he can bang it up the middle too.

He’s a beautiful runner – reminded me of Walter.

      • bearsfantillend

Based on what… a couple pre-season games. Garrett Wolfe looked exciting in pre-season games too. Does not mean he is any good. I don’t understand your love affair with Ford.

        • Irish Sweetness

Garret Wolfe never looked exciting IMHO, and is a different type of back to the bigger Ford. It was embarrassing seeing him get calls between the tackles.

          • George Hernandez

Ford ran a 4.4 at the combine too I believe.

  • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

As I drift off to sleepyland I think about my remaining free agency wish list. It’s short but effective:

    1. Brandon Browner CB – huge fucking corner
    2. Anthony Spencer DL
    3. Justin Tuck DE (4-3)
    4. Chris Clemons S- better than Wright or Conte
    5. Corey Wootton DE/DT (4-3 or 3-4)
    6. Jared Allen DE (4-3)
    7. Mike Neal OLB (3-4) – i know he’s a Packer but I like his athleticism and his overall anger levels.

Rajii is just too friendly with Rodgers. I want a guy that will drive Aaron into the fucking ground….like Jared Allen or Wootton.

    • TheBigCheesy

      or shea mcclellin?

      • burntorangenavyblue

        -1

      • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

        lol, shea mcclellin.

        • Doooonnnn’t Caaaaare!

          by NFL standards is vagine.

    • Johnathan Wood

They can afford 1 of Tuck, Clemons, Wootton, Allen, Neal.

MAAAAAAYBE 2 if they stretch it. Be realistic.

And I want nothing to do with Browner. Suspended 4 games and overrated anyway. A UDFA rookie came in and played better than him in that D.

    • tobijohn

Jared Allen ended one of the Bears’ seasons a few years back on a controversial hit but I can’t remember who it was…

    • MB30SD

You mean like chicken dinner did? Haha

  • Irish Sweetness

Holy myocardial infarction Batman ! Denver sign Talib AND Ward … and are still pursuing Ware? Dat ain’t fair. Elway got some deep pockets. Damn.

    • Johnathan Wood

they also lost their top 2 CB from last year and Decker, plus an offensive lineman too I think. So they’re more re-shaping the team than adding on.

      • Irish Sweetness

That’s a badass secondary though, and if they sign Ware ….

when I heard Jared Allen talking with the Bears it raised my attention, but I’m so disheartened by Brian saying wheres the loyalty that’s what people don’t get it’s not about loyalty, it’s about winning. but I bet we do sign Allen we always do big free agent signings go Bears and I hope our d improves to a top ten, we will be top 25 without Allen, btw with him I think top ten.
