Retiring at the end of the month and moving to Vancouver Island. We’ll practically be neighbors. Really looking forward to the move. Should be out there by August. Not sure if you have any desire to go on the Island but you and the family are always welcome to stay at the new place.

          • Doc Nitty

Very cool man! Thanks a lot! And congrats. Your days of snow bike commuting to work are over. How stoked are you?

          • CanadaBear

VERY! I always did it to prove something to myself (don’t ask me what because I have no idea). Never enjoyed it but was always proud of it for some reason. I rode the bike to work for 33 years. Other than the winter extremes I always felt great when I got to work. Just slightly ahead of the hipsters!

Now I can ride the bike whenever I want. I’m not much of a fan of riding in the rain so I’ll have to work on that. I’m sure a really good rain suit would make a huge difference. Can’t wait to explore the Island. I’ve been on the other side (Port Renfrew and Tofino) but I much prefer the side where I’ll be living (Nanaimo). As my old buddy Housty used to say, “Boners from Biloxi”. Not sure it really meant anything but it always made me laugh.

Jahns is down on Vereen, doesn’t like his athleticism.

Blogfather does some hatin’ on Ryan Mundy.

    • CanadaBear

I thought it was a good interview. He seems reasonable and knowledgeable. Hope he becomes a regular feature

    • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

that’s weird. I have heard and seen nothing but good things about Vereen’s athleticism. If he’s athletic enough to be a CB in college, he’s athletic enough to be a S in the NFL.

I’m not sold on him as a stud safety, or even a good one, but it won’t be his athleticism that holds him back.

      • MB30SD

I did a full ‘me’ review after watching a bit o tape and the biggest thing that stood out to me was that the dude just wasn’t a playmaker.

Seemed fast, solid, discipline, good athleticism/feet/hips/instincts/angels/tackling… he just didn’t make many big plays. He’d get there and drag the guy down or maybe make a basic play, but there were almost zero ‘wow did you see that’ plays once he got there. Almost like he was so solid and focused on sure tackling, that he gave up big play potential. It was kinda weird to watch.

That said, I think if he gets the scheme and isn’t lost, I think he’s a better safety than what we have already based on his skillset alone.

        • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

yeah, most of what I’ve seen on tape and read/heard about him matches that. He does what he’s supposed to do but doesn’t stand out.
Still, you need solid players, and if he can be dependable (not even this year, just down the line) on the back end of the D I’ll happily take that for a 4th rounder.

          • MB30SD

yeah, that’s the thing for me… if he can not be lost out there, he can easily supplant conte. All he needs to do is be solid… not constantly out of place, taking bad angles to the ball, whiffing on critical ‘last man’ tackles. If he JUST checks those basic boxes, he’ll be a vast improvement over conte.

We can get our next Mike Brown in rd 1 next year barring big holes/injuries this year… including some of the young guys stepping up (bostic, jones, green, one of the RBs, wilson, sutton/ferguson, etc…)

          • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

I really think the big need next year will be DE. Need a guy to groom as top DE behind Allen, who’s likely gone in 2 years.

          • MB30SD

            cornelius. washington.

          • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

maybe. I need to see something from him first. Not saying he can’t develop, but he has never really done anything in college or the NFL. Would love it if he can put it together though.

          • MB30SD

I know… just throwing something out there for fun.

  • MB30SD

didn’t he tell the wife story a couple recordings ago… or am I having deja vu?

    • Trac

    • CanadaBear

Thanks for posting the MB vids in the last thread. it was great seeing those!

  • Trac

Those Lovie comments were made to order for you MB. Hahaha

    • MB30SD

I was just going to post that trac. Hahahaha

Bostic going to fuck shit up this year. He’s going to be MLB next year. Boom.

      • CanadaBear

Hope you’re right. I’d love to see Bostic become a force in the middle and CD become a pass rushing force at OLB. Not sure I believe it but it would be the nips on the tits.

        • MB30SD

yep. seems like the natural placements for me. Bostic has always been a IMLB and CD has always been an edge rusher… why try to swap them around? I don’t get that.

Either bostic can play MLB or not right?

          • CanadaBear

Exactly. He’s got the athleticism, just needs the smarts to read and react.

          • SC Dave

That’s the crux of the matter. Bostic will get his chances – as Jahn points out Bostic has lots of problems in the “structured” defense of the Lovie world. Evidently, they are going to let him just be fast and strong, so maybe it will work.

It seems the new regime is much more inclined to adapt the system to the personnel rather than trying to force-fit players to a system. Let’s hope so anyway.

          • MB30SD

like that process much better, right?

          • SC Dave

Absolutely. It’s loooong overdue at Halas Hall.

For what it’s worth, I think the CD has a great opportunity to benefit from it also.

          • MB30SD

sure. i’ve never said he can’t potentially be a successful SITUATIONAL end rusher on blitz packages (basically the same thing he’s done for the last 3 years, just not expected to get pressure and sacks every down), I just don’t think you can go from a career rush end to IMLB… OR… a true 4-3 OLB like briggsy in the NFL in one off season. brutal transition and the skillset is soooooo different.

          • Irish Sweetness

TBH I’d rather not see him react, and just run through the A gap every second play. It’s a run, you stop it. It’s a pass you sack him. Lawrence Taylor never thought about shit.

      • Irish Sweetness

I’d honestly expect CD to make Mike over Bostic. Reasoning : he hasn’t owned it at the position. With time, maybe CD has the better physical and mental characteristics required to play the position over Bostic, and is naturally inclined to be a Mike. Time will tell.

  • Trac

Ok, so help me out guys. What happened to GP and Johnny? Did they change their handles?

            Nice place. Congrats!

          • CanadaBear

Thanks. I’m all about living in better weather and between the heath care issue and the fact My Beloved Bride won’t live in the US, we’re pretty limited (weather-wise). I will be able to ride a bike in decent weather for 9 months a year. If I don’t mind riding in cold rain (not very likely), I can ride year ’round.

          • MB30SD

            excellent.

uhhhhgggg… I am such a pussy. You are a beast canada. I won’t ride in anything approaching 60… never mind freezing rain. fuuuuuuck that.

          • CanadaBear

You’re only a puss about the weather because you can be. If you lived in a different climate you’d suck it up and ride in some shitty weather. Beats not riding for months.

          • MB30SD

true. thanks for making me feel a little better.

          • Cormonster

You a skier MB? Whistler was one of my favorite ski vacations ever. Pricey, but worth it.

          • MB30SD

used to be corm. I went to UCDavis in nor cal, about 70 minutes from tahoe. Skied almost every weekend in college. For a period I got mistaken for a US mogul guy. It’s all I used to ski. Flats were just for getting to more moguls/jumps/trees.I was super aggressive in the bumps. Young and dumb and oblivious to the dangers.

Then I got old, fucked my back up surfing one time, and from then on I had to board. Skiing was just too hard on the old espalda.

Those were the times though. Used to go on ski trips with my fam, since I was about 7. My big bro and I would get there at lift opening time every day and ski till they shut ’em down. We’d come in for 45 to eat, but otherwise we’d be ripping it up. 4-6 days straight. Thems were the days.

The jumps and shit the kids do these days are insane, back in the day I’d pull a heli and the whole lift would go crazy, these days I doubt you’d get a single hoot for that. Hahahaha… getting old sucks. You?

          • Cormonster

Haven’t done a trip out west in almost 3 years, but before that went for 6 days of skiing every year. I will ski in Upper Michigan every year visiting family, but it’s not even close to as much fun.
Like you, me and my friends are gung ho out west. There when the lifts open and ski all day. Sometimes we don’t even take a break. We’ll just pack a lunch and eat on the mountain. I love moguls, but gotta have fresh powder now for me to enjoy the more technical stuff. Too hard on the body otherwise. Usually on a 6 day trip, we take it a little easier on the third day. I also enjoy the really fast cruisers early in the morning. I love skiing really fast on the verge of being out of control. LOVE skiing in the trees. Probably my favorite when conditions are right.
My first time out west was in Tahoe at Squaw Valley in 94. Flew into San Fran for a day, skied a few days at Tahoe, went to Yosemite, hit the Rose Bowl and LA for a few days, then took the coast ride back to San Fran. Awesome trip with my brother and another friend right after college graduation. I think it was a nine or ten day trip.
I think I’m going to do a trip next year, probably Colorado, but I’d like to check out Wyoming or Montana. Never been there.

          • MB30SD

nice. sounds awesome. Squaw and kirkwood were our home mountains.

I went with my family when I was young to Brianhead in UT about 10 years in a row. Really small resort, but the power was SOOOOOO dry, it was amazing.

          • Cormonster

The first time I went to Squaw Valley, me and my brother got baked out of our minds to start the day. Then we hopped on the gondola, and I was FREAKED OUT! It was like holy shit, I’m a little scared. Now this is gonna be some REAL skiing. The views at the top are just breathtaking. My buddy knew the place really well, so we had some great days of skiing. Before the trip I had skied in the Midwest for about 10 years. In those 2-3 days at Tahoe I became 2-3 times better of a skier. My buddy pushed us hard, and we skied stuff that I never thought I could do.
I went to Salt Lake City once for a week, and that was awesome too. Another beautiful place. We had a couple days that were too warm, so the snow got a little too crunchy, but the other days were just magical. The skiing was so good, you just fought through the late day fatigue and leg burn. Some of the best skiing I ever did was when I was fatigued, but just in a total zone late in the day. Nobody talks on the ride up, just resting as much as possible and in your own little world, and figuring out what to hit on the next run. I was never a jump or trick guy, but in the zone I loved the really technical steep stuff.

          • MB30SD

at some point, you should check out Mammoth in Cali. insane mountain. so big and good.

I liked hearing a little about Will Sutton. Not much has been mentioned anywhere about him. Glad to hear he’s got a motor and putting some pressure on. i want to hear more once pads are on.

    • MB30SD

yeeeees! BC and Data both loved him and I quickly jumped on after checking the film… and seeing him in the holiday bowl.

Dude’s a beast. Hope he blows it up for us.

    • CanadaBear

Me too. I also appreciated the description of Vereen. People on here seemed to be getting a little carried away considering he’s a 4th rounder. Who knows?

      • bearsfantillend

agree on Vereen. he was a 4th rounder when it was not a very deep draft talent wise for Safeties.

        • MB30SD

I don’t think there’s be as much hope/delusion if there was a better option on the sidelines (on the pup list?)

      • Irish Sweetness

He doesn’t sound like one of the smart ones that come in as a first rounder and is expected to slot in and produce. If he was he would have gone in the top two rounds likely. He’s not the answer this season. Phil has left us with not very much good news at safety or backup QB.

        • MB30SD

supposedly he IS very football smart, just not a playmaker. Not exactly sure how that comes about since he’s supposedly plenty fast/athletic/talented/a leader… but there it is. weird.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

I saw the same exact things you saw in Vereen. Just a guy, not a playmaker. Conte on the other hand, does make some plays, but also huge fucking mistakes.

It’s like we have to decide between deciding to bang the girl next door who only likes missionary style and only hands out blow jobs on anniversaries, or that crazy coked out hooker.

          • MB30SD

solid, plodding, very few mistakes… every. single. time.

The cops won’t break down your door and haul you into fucking jail with the girl next door.

          • Irish Sweetness

Ah, missed the Emery comment about picking up a FS, thanks ….. okay Phil, we’ll wait.

    • Irish Sweetness

We’ll know he’s going to be good for us if he drops below 300lbs consistently.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

A subtext of Jahns talk with Jeff – more overt at the end – is that Trestman has said – win or lose – you talk to the media. You don’t get to follow Lovie’s lead and stonewall the media and be a fuckhead if things don’t go your way – this is a fan driven sport and the Bears don’t roll like that. I think that started with Ginny and came down to Phil and now with Trestman – people are accountable and the toxic relationship that Lovie had with the press needs to stop and stop now.

    • bearsfantillend

maybe now with Emery and Trestman we have people that are not afraid to say stupid shit, atleast those 2 have somewhat logical explanations for their actions. ie Last year when Trestman explained the use or lack of use of timeouts late in the game, i did not agree with it fully but he had a fairly logical explanation. it was refreshing to hear the thought process, instead of that damn stoic blank stare of Lovie’s (i always imagined Lovie had episodes of Yogi Bear running thru his head, ‘Hey Boo Boo lets go get us a pic-a-nic basket’).

    • MB30SD

so so glad that pos is gone. Haaaaaated him! (screamed like oprah)

    • SC Dave

Its seemed Lovie took it as a threat were people to speak their minds.

    • Cormonster

I subscribed to the Economist for over 10 years and then dropped it after a leadership change. It seemed like the reporting got sloppier with more errors in the stories. After 2-3 years I picked it up again for a year, and didn’t find it nearly as good as the past, so I cancelled last fall again.

      • MB30SD

sad… maybe I’ll pick up a paper copy (they make those still right?) at the store to check it out before I jump back on.

        • Cormonster

I still love their xmas or new years edition, which is much bigger and has all kinds of fascinating stories in it. I usually will pick that up each year.

      • Irish Sweetness

Long story short, friend of a friend is in the MI5-type joint in a certain country. ALL printed media and TV news stories are censored (by his and other departments). This is a large powerful European country. This is how people don’t realise that banks are milking them on earth and that little green men have been time-travelling back here since they decided to turn Cro-Magnon man into us.

        And the plot thickens.

        Guess who’s back?

He told my best mate that he’s keeping back a screed of information communications (related to the Snowden case I think) which directly involves the Tall Whites. He’s holding it as collateral against any nefarious treatment by aforementioned department. Actual diplomatic evidence of acknowledgement of the existence and presence here on Earth of the TWs.

This Snowden evidence – if it is he – could be quite convincing if put together with former Canadian defence Minister Hellyer’s request of six U.S. congressmen to disclose the presence of a TW embassy in Indian Springs Nevada. Paradise Ranch. Dreamland. Area 51. He had it on good intelligence, that this is so, and has been since the 40s/50s, perhaps longer. He was backed physically at the hearing by many military witnesses who had come forward with their own individual experiences with E.T.s and were present to tell the world just so.

That hearing never made the news. The internet is all we have between us and 1984.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Jahns does a good job covering the Bears. Him and Biggsy and a few others relay meaningful info, esp for the Bears diaspora who can’t check out camp (GP also is a beat reporter for us there).

That being said, doesn’t Jahn look like a Filipino DiCaprio? He does!

Oh, and props Jeff on resisting bringing up the punter for at least half the show. I thought the interview was going to unfold along these lines…

    ring…ringgggg…
    “Hello”
    “Yeah, A-dog, this is Blogfather”
“Oh, hey Jeff, how are you?”
“I’m good. Listen. Can Pat O’Donnell out kick a donkey?”
    “Uhh…maybe?”

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Sutton is…Sudden. Sorry, that’s all I got. I like that Sutton and Long are going at it. That’s gotta improve both.
Jahn was also subtly trying to dash some cold showers on the Vereen hard ons. When ur starved, a cracker taste like filet Mignon.

Just havin fun my man. Seriously though, this is going to be a great year I think. It may be the year that old molds are truly broken and we get to see the Bears step into the 21st century and become the perennial contenders that we’ve been desperately waiting for. I’ve gotten sick of teams like the Steelers, Giants, Saints, Ravens and the Pats having all the fun.

A great year would be to not miss the playoffs again. A great year would mean we dominated the Cheese and the Division. A great year would translate into teams having to chalk up a loss that have us on their schedule after week 4 because by then they would realize that they don’t have the playa’s to beat us on their roster.

    Tough to watch. Motherfuckers.

    • Big Mike

I watched that with my son. Those guys got hit with a lot of bullets and still kept moving. Sheesh…

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

I also took my 11 year old to see it. His schoolbus is full of kids who play CoD and I won’t let him play CoD. I wanted to show him that this is what actually goes down and that these are real men and women in the community who go and die. He doesn’t want to play CoD anymore.

        • MB30SD

yeah, they took a TON of ‘creative license’ with it. Some pretty dramatic elements added for hollywood effect. LIke them jumping off 100′ cliffs a few times and no one dying or getting seriously injured. I found that part to be pretty silly.

Also, do they liberally pass out eyeliner in all the maddrasses? Man, those were some heavily make uped muslims.

But, yeah, sad shit. I’m sure the real thing was just as harrowing. Personally, I would have tied up the old man and little boy and taken the angry one with me to extraction. Then once the helos arrived let his go… after slapping the fuck out of his pruned up ugly little mug.

        • Big Mike

My kids been playing CoD since he was about your son’s age. He’s going to be a Junior in HS right now. For a long time, he wanted to enlist in the Marines. (He also wanted to be a safety/KR for the Bears). Reality set in on NFL when he started playing HS ball. But we still discussed military service. I’m all for it, but I told him if he wanted my blessing, he’d go in as an Officer. (be the gun, not the bullet). We watched “Saving Private Ryan” and “Lone Survivor”. I’ve had him talk to a number of my friends who served as Officers and Enlisted. He’s starting to see the difference between CoD and being a soldier. So, his opinion is maturing. He thinks he’d like to qualify to be a Seal, Ranger etc. He’s athletic enough, but he gets pissed off when a coach jumps in his face. Doesn’t get that a drill instructor makes the coach look like Barney the dinosaur.

          • MB30SD

yeah, you don’t get to infinity-respawn in real war.

I have huge respect for the military, but I will do everything in my power to make sure my kids stay as far away from war as possible. Unless we’re talking about the zombie apocalypse… no one has a say in that war… oh, and it’s coming. And I’ll be ready!

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

That’s the best thing to do, Mike. Have him actually talk to former soldiers. I almost enlisted out of HS too, took the tests and everything. Then I began asking vets (a lot of those around my family), and half said it was good, while the other half said the military was full of shit. Heard a lot of horror stories like the VA (yes, even back then) – about the military trying to fuck ppl over with paychecks and benefits. A girl I knew got booted out because she reported that her higher up tried to rape her. My other good friend used to tell me that his superiors would send him off to field drills, then swing by his house and try to fuck his wife while he was away. There was a lot of that shit going on. It didn’t sound like honor and patriotism to me. I came away a little disenchanted. I told Sgt Sanchez that I would give college a try. I still remember very clearly his response:

“That’s the worst decision you’ll ever make.”

Of course, he was probably just worried about his commission, never mind what’s best for me.

There was some good stories too, but I decided to give college a try anyhow.

Any physicist on here? This I don’t get.

“Remember, nothing locally exceeds the speed of light, but space can expand and contract at any speed,”

So matter cannot exceed the speed of light (without becoming infinite), but space CAN contract/expand faster than the speed of light? (Big Bang might be a model). Reminds me of another special I saw, “Nothing is faster than the speed of light” – So nothing can go faster? “No. NOTHING IS faster than the speed of light, like nothingness” ohhh.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

I knew a guy at university who really thinks UFOs are real. I sat with him at lunch and tried to explain the theory of the universe which states that intelligent life is out there but we can’t find each other because of timeline issues on the cosmic calendar – the calendar which compresses all of known time into a single calendar year. (humans have only been able to walk upright and write things in the last 0.000001 second leading to midnight (now) of Dec 31st on the cosmic calendar).

Scale is just too damn large. The local group alone would take months on the cosmic calendar to explore.

He insisted that aliens had ships that bent space-time like the article above. That they DIDN’T travel vast distances over eons, they essentially manufactured wormholes and then shot through them.

I told him he’d been playing Portal too long and then ate my lunch.

        • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Then he went on to create warp drive. Humans can accomplish wonders, when we’re not getting laid.

          • johnnywad

Why create warp drive when you can get laid? I don’t get all the hand wringing over the universe. I much prefer to focus on beers, cheeseburgers and vagina. In a hundred years, we’ll all be dead and nobody will give a shit. So the Fed, the Universe, the Climate and the Middle East can all kiss my ass.

when you think about it, it always all boils down to pussy.

That’s the answer to the universe. The big “Why (and how) we are”……………. pussy.

        • Irish Sweetness

Thinking about the physics we don’t know yet and assuming things aren’t possible is limited by our human perception and small brains. For example, if one accepts FTL travel is possible (in contradiction with Einstein in fairness, but he never accepted QM), such as Gravity, tachyons, information (through Bell’s theorem and its proof by Alain Aspect) then one is saying that time travel is possible (what happens when you travel FTL … you go back in time). We’re being visited by visitors from our future – perhaps by our future selves.

Scenario two : we are visited by inter-dimensional beings who have complete control of gravity thru its laws. No ‘space’ is being traversed, dimensions are being flipped. We have NO laws for treating gravity at the quantum level- it’s the missing piece of the puzzle. You know those laws and you control gravity. Everything. Past present and future.

Scenario three : they’ve been living on nearby planets ….. moons, the back of our moon … for .. .aeons.

Scenario four : Einstein did prove space-time was curved and could theoretically be ‘folded’ as in drawing two points on a piece of paper. Shortest point between them? Fold the paper so both dots are touching. It’s all just maths. You’ve got to know the formulae.

          • MB30SD

scenario five… it’s all a concept manufactured by our minds (kinda like god)

          • Irish Sweetness

Actually yes, it would be the fifth (or first). Don’t like that one though.

      • Trac

        In the beginning…….

There was a beginning, that’s for sure. Also, Have to keep in mind that the universe is slowing down(fact) which throws into this equation that it’s not possible to know all the factors when the universe was created. Not everything we see today was like it was in the beginning.

        • Bender McLugh

Trac, recent studies have shown the universe is actually speeding up. Neil Degrasse Tyson talked about this in last week’s Cosmos episode about Dark Matter.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

            Indeed.

The rate at which galaxies are moving apart is increasing. In a billion years the night sky will have far, far, fewer objects in it.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

The Big Freeze. Everything is going to be so far apart from each other, that even light won’t be able to reach specks of life. Everything will die cold, dark and alone.

How is that for a thought.

          • Irish Sweetness

Super massive black holes won’t allow that. It’s now apparent that they are key components of our universe. They recycle and power galaxies from their centers.

      • Irish Sweetness

I am reminded of how small our human brains are every time I hear people regurgitate “nothing can travel faster than the speed of light”. This fallacy is only perpetuated because Einstein said a hundred years ago that it was so … WHEN HE HIMSELF DIDN’T ACCEPT QUANTUM MECHANICS. QM – which has never been proven wrong experimentally! He came up with a bunch of maths which had no treatment using the laws which govern the universe at the sub-atomic level. God doesn’t play dice he said. Well he was quite simply proven wrong, we do live in a universe where it’s all about the dice.

There is no such thing as ‘space’ ….. there is space-time. You don’t need to fly like a crow from A to B. Theoretically, you can fold space-time like a piece of paper, and simply place A on B. Things DO happen at apparently FTL speeds, namely :

        1. Gravity travels/acts FTL. Provable with thought experiments.

        2. Information can and does act/travel FTL. Proven by Alain Aspect in 1981 (Bell’s Theorem re non-locality/entanglement)

        3. The theoretical Tachyon from the current particle model.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Here’s another thing I never really got (that is relevant to sports and military). The whole “negative reinforcement” method. You know, when a coach/sgt gets in your face and yells at you, or the only remark is a criticism. It never really worked for me. I just thought the coach was a dick, and I went through the motions. When I had coaches who wouldn’t treat us like roaches, I played harder. I didn’t want to let that coach down.

Now, I know drill sergeants are trying to toughen up the recruits for war, so that might be a little different, but aren’t other militaries experimenting with “positive reinforcement” (I heard the Israelis tried this out, but can’t confirm).

Or, if you really want to train a recruit for FUBAR, do what the Russian special forces do. At the beginning of training, give them a puppy. At the end of training, make them kill that very dog they raised. It’s fucked up, but so is war, right?

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

That puppy story comes from the German SS. Wiki it.

My HS coaches were all lazy, stupid dickheads who only used negative reinforcement. And this was a Catholic HS. They could give a shit, they were teachers on teachers salaries (and they let us know that) and really couldn’t be bothered to actually, you know, coach.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

I saw a special on elite U.S. forces vs Russian, and I remember that they said the russian forces used that method too, but that they got so distraught by it, that they switched to chickens. I guess no one feels bad for chickens.

If I find that link, I’ll post it. But didn’t know that practice originated with the SS. Here’s my surprised face [insert Home Alone poster meme]

Butch and Irish created a time machine by bending space.

Irish wanted to go back to revolutionary times and stop the creation of the Fed, Butch wanted to use it to go back to the 60s and hook up with Racquel Welch when she was smoking, and Al wanted to go back to ’75 so he could kick Jack Pardee in the scrotum.

Ultimately, they chose to go back to ’86 and prevent Ditka from shooting a commercial for Brut that would have accidentally ended the world. Luckily, they succeeded.

      • Irish Sweetness

Demand your congressman to repeal the Federal Reserve Act. If everybody did that then it’s over tomorrow and the USA will be prosperous in the future. Until it’s ended and the government stops borrowing its own money off private banks and allowing them to create wealth willy nilly with deposit accounts …. until that kind of insanity stops, nothing is possible. There’s a pyramid of wealth and the family that sits atop it and controls the media and everything of importance on earth …. is largely unknown to its populace. How do you fight that?

Only aliens could, and they may. If we are a long-standing genetic experiment – a combination of many races of DNA in some galactic experiment in peace – then those races would want to protect life here on earth. We may be a rare oasis of flora and fauna in space. We may be of interest to those who may have created us, it would be logical.

If the ropes of war are ever tied again on this planet, there is substantial evidence and testimony from military personnel to suggest that UFOs have been disabling warheads for years. They’re either afraid we’ll blow everything up, or that our explosions are somehow felt in their dimension, and are multiplied in effect. Who knows?

        • Bear Down in Tampa

Let me be clear…that like was for abolishing the Fed not UFO’s, aliens, etc…you lost me after that.

          • SC Dave

            This

        • MichiganBearFan

Nukes probably release energy that is multidimensional in nature, and therefore easily tracked through time-space. Two explosions in close proximity in both time and space attracted a lot of attention from our universe’s neighbors.
But why exactly does AI freak aliens out? It’s probably easier to understand than quantum physics and time-space modalities.

          • Irish Sweetness

If we are sharing the same ‘space’ as other dimensions, then this would explain where all the extra dark matter/energy and strange unaccounted gravity comes from.

I like the theory. We all share the same space, but vibrate at different frequencies, so we don’t ‘see’ the other dimensions.
I think people need to get past the debate as to whether they’re here or not … and get on to why they’re here.

The AI thing was just a comment passed by a whistle-blower (who’s authenticity I am in limbo on) … but at the end of the day, AI would just become ‘I’ and without Asimov’s laws …..

          • SC Dave

Why do you so want him to fail? Is your “I told you so” more important than having a guy play well for the Bears?

          • MB30SD

(note: I wrote this whole thing on conte, cause that’s who I thought you were talking about… but they’re pretty much interchangeable anyway)

I don’t want him to do anything except be the fuck off this team dave. I know you love the underdog, but he is bad at the thing he’s done all his football life and I dont want to waste a spot at linebacker IF we need it.

The better question is… why are you pulling so hard for a guy who has PROVEN to be bad? Why would you constantly argue about taking up a roster spot with a dude who can only be serviceable when you have a top 5-10 defense?

I honestly don’t get that. It’s not like I’m pulling for will sutton or ego F to get off this squad…. because I haven’t seen what they can do yet! We KNOW what CD is and now were trying him at LB?!?!

I don’t know, we’ll see dave. Maybe the 3-5 guys on here who think because he looks like a linebacker that he can be a good one will be right. What the fuck do I know.

My net-net is that I don’t want him to fail, I just want him the fuck off this team because he’s shown what he has and he’s a bust. simple as that. He’s probably a stand up guy that I’d like hanging out with, but this is a show me bidniz.

          • SC Dave

There is a reason that Emery, et al, took him in the first round. All the speculation about it being “Lovie’s pick” is just that and nothing more. Emery was the GM, plain and simple. It’s his organization. And it’s quite possible they missed on Shea.

This will be the preseason we find out. I don’t see CD as trade bait, but I doubt he would be cut until the last set of people are let go at the end of the preseason. When the 53 are picked we’ll know.

By your two year rule, the Packers would have dumped Aaron Rodgers. So you might want to rethink that.

          • MB30SD

I get we all WANT him not to be emery’s first ever pick bust… but the proof is on the field. And like you said, if he doesn’t do something solid in preseason we should just cut bait if we need the extra spot.

I don’t know enough about Rodgers but I bet he wasn’t dogshit for the first two years he started. Was he?

          • Irish Sweetness

            1. We ‘re Bears fans.

            2. He has not been proven to be a bad LB. He’s built like an NFL linebacker and was asked to play DE – but he didn’t have the tools to be a DE – he’s not built like one, and not surprisingly it didn’t work out. Let him play LB …and then he gets judged. Next contract, we’ll see.

          • MB30SD

you’re being fucking retarded dude. I’m sorry, it’s insanity.

            He’s built like?!?!?!?!

He played fucking DE his entire football career since peewee fucking football… and all of a sudden in the NFL he’s the next coming of butkus after he busted out of the… again… one position he’s played all his life?!!?!? cause he’s fucking built like a LB?!?!?! Oy fucking vey!

            SMMFHATM

          • Irish Sweetness

He’s built more like a LB than a DE, I think that’s fair comment. No one mentioned Butkus. He can’t play DE, he’s under contract, so let him try LB. No biggie. It doesn’t work out ? Day day.

          • Irish Sweetness

It’s almost like you’re willing him not to do well MB …. he’ll get his chance, and if it doesn’t work out it doesn’t work out.

Finally just listened to this phone conversation… what did I tell you about Sutton? I think in 5 years he will be considered the best pick of the draft. Not just for the Bears. The draft.

    • Big Mike

      Oooohhh that would be nice.

    • Bear Down in Tampa

I had your back on that one.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

I’ll hold you to that. It might be true if he reverts to slim Sutton, not round Sutton. His tape the previous year he looked beastly.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

        THe original Slim Sutton

    • SC Dave

Well, there’s a lot of luck needed for that regarding dodging injury.

      That’s a grand statement.

Here’s a pretty cool doc on “The Gurkhas” – bad ass soldiers by most accounts. Hard to believe these little kind kids are stone cold killas. I also don’t think they subscribe to the “negative reinforcement” philosophy (or as the brits say, “patronizing haughtiness”). Kinda hard to yell at them when you can’t use bad words. As they say in the doc, no need to, they’re self-motivated.

There’s also all sorts of geo-political-post-colonial stuff going on. Check it out.

    http://youtu.be/099UChPu6tQ

    • SC Dave

Gurkhas have been bad-ass for some time.

      • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Yeah, and they seem well-balanced, polite, caring…then turn into killing machines…then revert back to humble folk. They might be a peak into warriors past.

I’m willing to bet they don’t suffer PTSD at the rate of western soldiers. I would like to see a study on that though.

        • SC Dave

          An interesting notion.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RFVe8dxfok

Boise didn’t have him play Monster or even slide into a 3-4 formation. He was a strict hand on the ground guy. It’s like we wanted a 290 lb. Trace Armstrong and we got a 250 lb. mini-Trace instead.

I think his challenge will be to learn a position he’s never played before and to call signals in a D he has never played.

    • MB30SD

My god. .. is this a dose of actual fact, reason, and logic about the cd debacle finally? !?!

Holy crap!!! A first. Gp I think I love you.

But hey he’s totally worth a roster spot. .. you know. .. just fucking because he *looks* like a linebacker. Smfh.

      Fiiine. Yes I’m done.

      • John ‘GP’ Nada

Don’t be so sure that he doesn’t get cut.

This is not Glitchy, Emery has no affinity to his ego in that way. If Shae can’t bark out reads and get to his assignments – if he can’t swing his hips and cover a TE crossing – he’s gone.

If I go to Bourbon-haze he’s going to be my focus in watching the scrimmages. My guess is, if he looks even halfway competent he’ll get the first few pre-season games to play heavy heavy minutes to keep DJ healthy and then we will find out what’s what. If he gets lost or gets run over – I honestly think Emery will be happy to supplant him with somebody else.

        • MB30SD

          hope so.

I don’t WANT him to bust, I’m just expecting it based on what I’ve seen in the last 3 plus the shocking trooffs you threw out above that no one else seems to want to admit.

I’d love it if he make an impact in the middle and isn’t a throwaway, I’ve just never seen a bust go to a winner trying out a totally new position in the NFL, over a single post/pre season. Maybe a talent like lach could, but an already bust? I’ll be totally shocked.

The bottom line is, if we don’t need the roster spot on the 53 (when is this ever true), then fine, keep him as depth… but if we do, he better be gone if he is who I think he is.

  • John ‘GP’ Nada

the league is requesting that the potential venue have the ability to host an additional fan festival in an adjacent indoor or outdoor space, one of the reasons the Windy City is a favorite.

The McCormick Place convention center has been frequently mentioned as a likely site in the Windy City and would provide a flexible and large space to hold the draft and adjoining fan festival,” the article says. “The Chicago Theatre and Soldier Field might also be under consideration. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been quite vocal about bringing the event to his city and there should be no shortage of options for venues.

I doubt it would be the Chicago theater. At McCormick they could build out the Arie Crown and there would be a lakefront park and a bunch of places right in the shadow of SF to have all kinds of outdoor events.

  • For your consideration….

    Motherfuckers asking to be Jericho’d.

Why are we the only ass backwards fucked up sports town that has more articles on the Clausen,Palmer,Fales stories than the actual fucking real players on the team? I’m going to stop short of rant mode but the mentality of our largely retarded fan base and city is fucking irritating.

    • SC Dave

Maybe because its where the mystery is? Or maybe they are just retarded

      • Big Mike

Both. But the real reason is that a story about the 5 guys behind Cutler is more interesting than anything the Cubs or Sox do. The insight on Clausen, is he probably called Trestman and asked for a shot. Trestman figured, it can’t hurt.

  • JP

I don’t know if I agree with this teams 2015 safety not being on the roster yet. I think Brock Vereen has the talent to be a stop gap at that position. I just think its a little early to say that.

    • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

Mundy seems likely to be a starter the next 2 years. So if Vereen steps up, they may have their 2015 starters. Maybe.

  • Big Mike

Atlanta picked for Hard Knocks. – thank you.

    • John ‘GP’ Nada

      God that will be boring.

Does Atlanta have anybody that will do anything exciting?

We get to watch if Jake Matthews and Rashade Hageman pan out. Wow. Thrilling.

I – of course – will watch it anyway because I am the NFL’s bitch and will want to see if we missed out in not having Hageman fall to us.

      • burntorangenavyblue

I’m pretty sure that they will use the Hester story line as filler

        • John ‘GP’ Nada

Oh yeah, I keep thinking Devin is on the Bucs cause of Lovie. He’s a Falcon now.

      • Big Mike

of course we’ll all watch. As much as I did not want it to be the Bears for football reasons (and being the butt of jokes from fans of other teams), I would have watched that looking for signs of impending dominance or disaster. The position fights between the 8th and 9th O-lineman and the 6th and 7th WR would have been gripping. The backup QB angle…, CD at LB, that would be cool, but it is way better that the Bears did not get picked.

  • Trac

It would be bad ass. Instead of po-po, you just have guys in helos who shoot your car up if you drive in the wrong place.

          • burntorangenavyblue

It’s sad to see how those places in the world have been running their lives. The only way that will help bring these people up and above is education, period.

You can have other countries going in there and toppling over the oppressing regimes and rouge militias, however, afterwards, you have to first and foremost EDUCATE them and their children with world knowledge, not arm them to the teeth.

When they are at least decently educated(two or three generation’s worth of exposure to modern education), then people can start deciding for themselves in a more positive way about what does and doesn’t work. Western countries need to stop swooping in and out of there. There’s no quick fix….stay in there and give real help, or stay the hell out.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

Do you think scdave will rip GW Bush for going in there in the first place and blowing the place the fuck up?

            My guess is no.

          • Cormonster

GP, I know you think I’m a right wing wacko, but you got me pegged wrong. I had a lot of disdain for Bush, but I wasn’t on the blog yet to rant about him. I have equal disdain for Obama because he reminds me so much of Bush.
            http://reason.com/blog/2014/06/11/ralph-nader-on-the-right-left-alliance-t

Anyways, I think you might like this long interview with Nader. I agree with him on over 75% of his positions in this interview, mainly dealing with his new book. Give it a listen if you have time. I found it very interesting.
It’s an hour long, and a bit disjointed at times, but I think it’s worth a listen for anyone who is fed up with Washington, and how it’s run by corporatist interests.

          • John ‘GP’ Nada

The NSA story with Snowden nailed home the idea that the whole two party thing is a scam, there is the 1% and the illusion of everything else protecting them. We’re just cogs in a machine and the guys who went to Iraq and got killed died for a failed US hegemony ploy. Makes me sad. So I have no illusions about much but I do think Obamacare was something the GOP would never have done and helped people, so at the margins there are small changes.

          • Cormonster

Totally agree on the war front. I wanted retribution after 9/11, which to me meant going to Afghanistan and eliminating Al-Quada. Not taking out the Taliban, or nation building, or escalating the war in Iraq.
My opinions on Obamacare are anecdotal, but I see it as a major failure that has made the system worse. I’ve heard nothing but bitching from everyone I know who has had to go onto Obamacare.

          • Trac

A semi-educated electorate did not allow for anything like obamacare to pass until recently for a reason. The problems with ridiculous medical costs still exist. Your sides position has only compounded the problem of unaffordable health care in my opinion. Coverage is worse and more expensive now, how is this a good thing?

If you’re happy with society receiving VA type medical care at higher costs and calling it progress then that is most unfortunate.

          • Trac

Snowden was a fool for thinking that the American people have the power to do anything but grin and bear it. The people have lost the power to fight against tyranny because they have voted in idiots to run this country through political hatred and ideology on both sides. Politics has become the new religion of the day and I don’t see America ever rising above her politicians.

“Jon Bostic and D.J. Williams are splitting time at middle linebacker during OTAs.

Per CSN Chicago, Bostic is making a “strong impression”
even in these non-contact sessions. It sounds like the Bears are
rethinking whispers that had Bostic moving to the strong-side,
especially with Shea McClellin showing well there. Getting more speed
and explosiveness on the field is a must for Chicago, who was
historically inept against the run last season.

    Nitty-gritty.

“Defensive end Jared Allen brought up Ratliff with effusive praise
after Allen signed with the Bears, the two having met at Pro Bowls (they
have nine between them). Allen specifically mentioned “reps” as the key
to their making strides together and both have taken every snap at
their positions with the No. 1 defense through OTAs.

“I’ll need to know what ‘Jay’s’ countermove is right so when I’m
rushing up the field and I see him up that he’s going to counter and he
also needs to understand like, ‘Hey, I need you to make a decision by

Croatia had a late goal taken away that would have tied it at 2-2 on a terrible penalty call against Croatia. Then Brazil had a clear foul that went uncalled (slidetackle from behind… instant no-no) that led to the breakaway on the 3rd goal.

Not to mention Brazil’s best player not getting kicked out after deliberately hitting a Croatian player in the throat.

The officiating in that game was disgraceful. I won’t go with cheating. I think the ref was simply overcome by the enormity of the moment.

      • AlbertInTucson

“The officiating in that game was disgraceful.”

So, what ELSE is new, JW?

And, it’s not like FIFA is corrupt or would want to avoid a loss for the host team to open the tournament, right?

        • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

I think it’s kind of like the NBA. FIFA knows what refs are weak and will be swayed by a home crowd. So they assign those refs to certain games when they want the home team to have an edge.

Not necessarily “fixed,” per se, in the way that the refs aren’t actually bought. They’re just specifically chosen for that game/match because of their incompetencies that favor one team over another.

      • Irish Sweetness

Any tackle from behind is an automatic card, and usually red. When you see that happen and no card is drawn, the ref is on the take.

      • MB30SD

The penalty on the second goal wasn’t that bad and half the players had stopped really playing when the goal actually went in.

    • Irish Sweetness

I think they’re often intentional calls, not bad calls.

Thierry Henry basically picked up a ball and ran into the Irish goal in qualifiers during extra time. The crowd saw it, both sets of players saw it, and the French players sat around with the Irish players on the pitch afterwards, apologizing for it.

Refs are easy targets for corruption. They decide the outcomes of matches.

Soccer hater’s guide to betting the 2014 World Cup

    By JASON LOGAN

    Thursday, June 12, 2014

Every four years, soccer fans boil over with excitement, painting their faces, strapping down their beer guts with skin-tight jerseys, and driving around honking their horns with flags flying out the passenger window. And every four years, you feel like punching those people in the face.

    You hate soccer.

You hate soccer like little kids hate Brussels sprouts. You hate soccer – or futebol (gag!) – like Dan Marino hates Boomer Esiason. You hate soccer like Celtic hates Rangers. And if you get that reference, then there are legions of anti-footy fans that hate your stupid little face.

However, if you’re a sports bettor who just so happens to hold soccer in the same light as dentists and ex-wives, you know you don’t stand a chance when it comes to the World Cup.

It’s on ESPN, Fox Sports 1, taking up space in your local sports section, and infiltrating your favorite sports bars and watering holes. And, it’s probably front and center whenever you stroll into the casino or log into your online book. Or at least it will be when the tournament kicks off Thursday.

Since the NBA and NHL playoffs are coming to a close, and baseball is months away from being interesting, the World Cup is the only show in town.

But rather than do the desperate thing – and start betting on the WNBA – join the dark side. As the Emperor said to Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, “Use your aggressive feelings, boy. Let the hate flow through you… your hate has made you powerful.”

Here’s everything you hate about the “Beautiful Game” and how to wager on it in our “Soccer Haters’ Guide to Betting the 2014 World Cup”:

    Pace

Soldiers describe war as long periods of boredom punctuated by short moments of excitement. Soccer is the same way. But, for soccer haters, the only war going on during a match is the battle between your eye lids and gravity as you fight to stay awake.

To quote the great Krusty the Clown, “Come on, you shnorers! Do something!”

Teams like Croatia bring the action to a snail’s pace, making for the longest 90 minutes of your sports betting life. So perhaps you want to stick to games involving squads like Germany (scored 16 goals in 2010), Spain (217 international goals on the roster) and the Netherlands (Wesley Sneijder and Robin Van Persie combine for 69 international goals), who quicken the pace with tremendous ball movement and scoring.

Throwing down a little coin on the Over/Under is a quick way to get your heart beating, even if the players on the field aren’t breaking a sweat.

    Scoring

Whoa! Hold on to your hats – a 2-1 final!

Soccer isn’t known for its wild high-scoring action. Hell, soccer isn’t known for scoring at all. No wonder these guys go ape shit, like Rod Tidwell on Monday Night Football, every time someone cracks the goal line.

The 2010 World Cup saw 145 goals for a yawn-inducing 2.27 goals per game. That was two less than the 147 netted in 2006. Oddsmakers at Pinnacle Sports are feeling optimistic, setting the 2014 tournament total at 155 goals (Over -117/Under +100).

The premium on goals can also kill your bets before the game is even over. A 2-0 deficit – which is nothing to scale in hockey and baseball – is pretty much a death sentence in soccer, even if there is more than an hour left on the clock. Teams grabbing early leads will stack the back line and play keep-away from the losing side until the whistle sounds.

At least you can put yourself out of your misery and turn the channel to something else, knowing you’re likely not missing the comeback of the tournament.

    Stats – or lack thereof

If you’ve been betting baseball since April, you live on Covers’ daily MLB matchup pages – digging through stacks and stacks of pitching numbers, situational stats and betting trends.

A good chunk of you probably wager with some sort of statistical model, using complex algorithms that would make “Good” Will Hunting spit take his Sam Adams all over Chucky’s face.

If you’re looking to break down your World Cup wagers using the help of in-depth stats and formulas, you may just want to stick to MLB odds. Finding stats and records that actually hold water is tough when a tournament comes around only once every four years and international rosters change faces more than Nicole Kidman.

That’s not to say the sports stats egg heads haven’t tried. Stats are out there but whether or not they apply to what happens in Brazil is another thing.

What kind of a sport doesn’t overkill its fans with tons and tons of stats? What the hell are you supposed to talk about when you’re watching the games at the bar – feelings?

    Diving

This is the weapon of choice for every soccer hater.

When you’re used to your sports heroes getting cracked over the head or driven half a foot into the turf only to bounce back up and not miss a play, you have a little disdain for the soccer player’s antics.

Writhing around on the ground like they were Kane from Alien with a chestburster popping through their ribcage after an opponent merely stepped in front of them. It’s enough to make most hardnosed football fans (we’re talking pigskin not pig bladder) throw up in their mouths a little.

Just like flopping is a part of taking a charge in basketball, diving is part of drawing better field position in soccer. And some countries are much better at it than others – or at least do it more frequently. It’s no surprise those teams are among the top contenders for the World Cup.

Italy, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, and Argentina are all well known divers, headlined by names like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Sergio Busquets – all of which chew more scenery than Nicholas Cage when given the slightest nudge.

However, the top offenders are being mocked by 888Sports.com’s prop odds. Uruguay’s Luis Suarez is priced at 7/2, Netherlands star Arjen Robben is listed at 4/1, and England’s Daniel Sturridge is at 11/1 to be carded for diving during the World Cup.

    Draws and Penalty kicks

You wouldn’t decide Game 7 between the Heat and Spurs with a foul shot competition would you? Or turn the fate of Super Bowl XLVIII over to the legs of kickers Steven Hauschka and Matt Prater for a head-to-head field goal showdown?

So why in the Wide World of Sports would you decide the biggest games in the universe – or so those annoying soccer fans would lead us to believe – on penalty kicks?

This is something our 13-year-old daughters could score on while still holding their glitter-encrusted iPhones and texting their friend Megan about how her “stupid dad keeps yelling at the soccer players on the TV. OMG!!!!! Sooooo embarrassing!!! :S”

And before we even get to penalty kicks, World Cup bettors have to suffer through a Group Stage loaded with draw after draw – which is the sports equivalent of kissing your sister. At least you can bet a draw, which doesn’t sting as much as pushing with the five-goal total in a hockey game night after night.

According to SportingCharts.com, 27 percent of Group Stage games since the 1986 World Cup have ended in draws – that’s one in four matches. They also worked out that since 1986, 38 percent of those games that didn’t draw finished with a one-goal differential.

Draws often come with a plus-money price tag, so if you just can’t stand the thought of sitting through a tie game, there’s a silver lining. And if you fear getting burned by penalty kicks in the elimination rounds, most books offer strict 90-minute odds – another reason you may want to change your tune when it comes to draws.

Your sister’s not that ugly after all…

I’m glad to hear that Bostic is impressing at MLB, even though it’s only OTAs.

Still have 3 reservations on him.

    1. Is he smart enough to play MLB at NFL level?
    2. Can he play zone and cover TEs?
    3. Are his instincts up to par? (last year it looked like he always guessed incorrectly)

The Bears’ D is changing up a bit, so he won’t be asked to play MLB like Lach. I still expect DJ Williams to start, but we all know he’s going to get hurt sooner or later.

    • Irish Sweetness

At 6’1 that’s a negatory on the TEs.

      • MB30SD

you mean…. there’s never been a 6’1″ MLB who can cover TEs?!?

        Ray lewis – 6’1″

        Navaro bowman – 6’0″
        Sean Lee – 6’2″

I don’t know where Kosar is coming from on the pocket presence thing. It’s definitely not one of Cutler’s strong points.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Didn’t Lovie or Emery cite that Shea played DE 50% of the time at Bosie? By the laws of deduction, that would mean the other 50% were at LB.

Shea also played LB in HS.

“McClellin was a linebacker in high school and at Boise State before being drafted in the first round two years ago.”

    http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/bears/27713560-606/shea-mcclellin-settles-in-at-linebacker-in-first-day-of-otas.html

    Here’s revisiting his scouting reports.

“Aside from playing as a traditional defensive end, he lined up for the
Broncos as both a stand-up rush linebacker and an inside linebacker. He
could have had a bigger sack total if Boise State had let him rush the
passer on every opportunity, but he dropped into pass coverage
    regularly.”

    http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2012smcclellin.php

And NFL.com (who had him pegged as a 5th rounder)

    http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/Shea-McClellin?id=2532907

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)
      • John ‘GP’ Nada

His highlight tapes on Da Tubez never show him at LB. So if he did play there, I guess it wasn’t noteworthy.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

      Another report.

“McClellin is an athletic and versatile pass rusher – Might be the most
versatile defender in the draft, having played DE, OLB and ILB
throughout college career …Proved at the Senior Bowl that he can play linebacker and cover backs
and tight ends – Displayed fluid hips and good feet while in pass
coverage – Tremendous football IQ, impressed coaches with how quick he
learned new position in Mobile – Plays aggressive and trusts his
      instincts”

      http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2012/03/shea-mcclellin-scouting-report.html

      • Irish Sweetness

This is what we expected him to be doing shortly after we drafted him, right? I’ll bet Phil drafted him because he’s smart – he’s better suited to LB so he should surprise a few people.

        • MB30SD

no, he was in the draft as a DE and he was drafted as a DE. The packers wanted him as a… DE.

The LB thing is our last desperate ditch effort to salvage a bust. That’s the sad truth. Who knows if it will work, but I guess it’s worth a shot… until we need that roster spot.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd Ricky Spanish (85)

Both the Pack and the Pats wanted him as a 3-4 rush LB.

The Pack have been looking for some time to bookend Matthews (now they have Pepp for that), and the Pats run a sort of hybrid where Shea would have played both rush 3-4 and DE most likely.

It never made sense for him to be a 4-3 end. It’s right there in the scouting reports. He gets swallowed up by Olinemen. He only benched 19 reps, the 2nd fewest of all Dlinemen.

Shea plays better in space with his hand off the ground IMO. He also won’t be looping in every time (creating huge run lanes) at LB, but we’ll see.

I think he’s too talented to bomb completely. I think he’ll start somewhere and be at least serviceable.

          • MB30SD

yeah, I agree with all that. Like I’ve been saying, I think he’ll be a decent situational rush/blitz OLB, but no way can the guy become a true briggsy style run/pass coverage 4-3 OLB, nor pick up the totally different IMLB position for the first time in the nfl.

My whole beef has been that do we really want just a serviceable guy there? If C.Jones turns out to be a bad motorfinger, I’d MUCH rather give him a roster spot (just as an example). This year keeping him might be a necessity if for nothing else but depth… but if the D takes a huge step with the O this year, and next year we’re playing for a title… I want a bad ass in his roster spot, not just some serviceable guy.

Lot of ifs… let’s see how it all pans out.

          • SC Dave

That last sentence is what I’ve been saying. Emery said the staff had not given him the best chance to succeed. While it may be face-saving, several people on this blog have opined that the current regime is different about being open with the fans.

          • MB30SD

hmmmm… guess we’ll find out dave. If he makes the team, earns his roster spot, and contributes every week I’m way down. Just dubious of each one of those. Don’t want favors because of draft status/#.

      • johnnywad

Tremendous football IQ my ass. Jeff Fisher and Tavon Austin designed a play specifically to make him their bitch because he’s dumb. He crashes down hard inside most of the time. Looked like an 8th grade DE against the Rams.

    Then there’s this:

    http://dawindycity.com/2014/06/13/brock-vereen-feeling-comfortable-bears-starters/

“Vereen is not flashy. You won’t see acrobatic interceptions or big hits. What you will see is him being at the right place. He is disciplined and reliable. He uses great technique when tackling, and is fundamentally sound in his play. After having two of the worst safeties in football last year, Vereen’s discipline will be a welcome sight.

As you all know, I agree with that last statement 100%. being in position, great tackling, great angles, being solid every down without mental or physical breakdowns in critical situations… yes please. Oh, and then there was this, “Chris Conte and Craig Steltz are out with injuries”

I didn’t know the NFL was categorizing “suck” as an injury now?

    • Irish Sweetness

If he can do the things mentioned there, and do them well, then job done. We’ll have a good defense. If not, mid-table. No getting away from the fact that they’ve left us very thin at QB and S.

      • MB30SD

irish. I want some of what you are smoking over there my maings.

We have like 10 QBs in camp right now. Clausen isn’t exactly brady, but homie has started a few NFL games. He’s an emergency… one we probably will need based on history, but you have to at some point believe cutty will get it done.

The safety thing, phil’s already basically stated we’re probably going to get our starter(s) from some of the detritus that sluffs off other teams due to cap/camp battles. I’m good with that or vereen just being solid.

Like many have repeated, as long as the Dline and LBs look good, all we need is a babysitter back at FS… right? RIGHT?!?!!?

I don’t even know you anymore!

          • AlbertInTucson

I don’t know why? I mean, who would think anybody named CANADAbear would be much into hockey?

          • MB30SD

Hahahaha… I can’t get into it canada. I actually watched at least, what 2-3 hawkce games and a couple of the kinga/rangers games. JUst can’t get into it.

I gave it 4-6 shots again. I agree they’re tough as nails man. Scary tough… but it’s just not enjoyable to watch at all for me. It’s even all the white, just hard on the eyes… never mind my biggest issue above re: the puck.

Net-net, if you didn’t grow up with it, it’s kind of a brutal sport to follow. I get you feel the same about soccer, and I totally get it.

          • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

I can’t see the puck either, MB. Didn’t Fox make it like glow in the dark once or something so viewers could actually see it? Maybe they should do something with 3d or thermo-vision like predator.

          • MB30SD

            this

          • CanadaBear

Hockey the same as soccer? You haven’t seen much hockey. If a guy is a flopper in hockey, one of the designated tough guys will tune him up and give him something to flop about. Seeing the puck in hockey is easy once you start to anticipate the action.

      • AlbertInTucson

National Pride , OK, MB. But soooo much International Corruption, too.

  • MB30SD

So does Spain pull their shit together and start dominating again, or are they finally done and will they pull a France?

I’m hoping my side gets it together, although I’m already betting Ze Germans come out kicking ass. SMFH.

Also interested to see what Italy and Arg look like. Fuck the french… I love the french… fuck them… love them… hate them. sigh.

Hey Irish, when does Ireland play? Oh, wait. : ( (says the South African)

    • Irish Sweetness

We’re still recuperating after beating Italy 20 years ago.

      • MB30SD

yeah. fucking sucks not having your side in the fucking tournament.

…then having your adopted side get fucking ass rapped by the… fucking dutch… the first day. Sigh.

        • Irish Sweetness

We’re used to it. What really sucked was making the WC in 2002 and the manager sent home our best player for calling him a wanker. Which he was.

Vince young is destined to be a headliner on “where are they now”. Espn has probably already started their research for the show.

Hey MB, if you have the kids today you might want to record the last stage of the Criterium du Dauphine. Contador is leading Froome by 8 seconds and it’s a mountaintop finish. Should be lots of fireworks. If all the contenders are healthy The Tour should be a dandy.

    • MB30SD

I do, thanks Canada. Tide pools, lunch with brother and friends, then the Del Mar Fair after their nap. long day.

Wow. 1 of 4 yesterday. England never fails to disappoint. Of all the games, Costa Rica was the only one that I changed my mind on at the last minute before I made my picks. It just seemed so crazy to pick them that I couldn’t do it.

    • MB30SD

      I was 3-1.

      Hee hee

    • Irish Sweetness

England don’t play well in WCs and have only beaten Italy twice in their history. Costa Rica was a turn-up though.

There have been some interesting bets. 21/20 for both Japan and Ivory Coast to score.

I have a love/hate relationship with France, but it is nice to see them back to form.

Last cup was a disgrace and pathetic and sad to watch. They might not be back to world power force, but at least the entire program hasn’t and hopefully won’t implode again. That was bad for soccer and for France.

      • Irish Sweetness

What was more disgraceful was that they shouldn’t even have been in the 2010 WC after Thierry Henry’s disgraceful double-handball when 1-0 down to Ireland in extra time –

        Sorry.

  • Trac

I forget to mention that I saw Clowney has a sports hernia and is going under the knife. The Texans think he’ll be ready for training camp. Do any of you guys think this is a big deal?

    • For your consideration….

it’s probably never a good thing when your intestines pop out of your stomach lining.

      • AlbertInTucson

Not the same as a traditional hernia…

        “Sports Hernia (Athletic Pubalgia)

A sports hernia is a painful, soft tissue injury that occurs in the groin area. It most often occurs during sports that require sudden changes of direction or intense twisting movements.

Although a sports hernia may lead to a traditional, abdominal hernia, it is a different injury. A sports hernia is a strain or tear of any soft tissue (muscle, tendon, ligament) in the lower abdomen or groin area.”

        http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00573

        • For your consideration….

          let me amend:

it’s probably never a good thing when you strain or tear any soft tissue WHATSOFUCKINGEVER in your lower abdomen or groin area.

Al, happy fathers day, and here’s to me wishing you a soft tissue tear of your own due to excessive fathers day liberties.

Girls are ugly, but I love it anyway. Their aquarium is bad ass though, and back in the day before they joined the union, you could get 1/2 a piri piri chicken, a huge beautiful portuguese roll, rice, and a can of sagres for about 5 fucking dollars US.

            Ahhh… the days.

  • SC Dave

Is there something in the water in Europe that turns them all into diving pussies?

    • AlbertInTucson

By not DISCOURAGING “diving”, FIFA tacetly ENCOURAGES the practice.

      • CanadaBear

I should have mentioned that to MB when we were discussing hockey. The NHL has a penalty for diving. Soccer, not so much.

        • SC Dave

Actually, the referee can book a player for diving. In practice, it is only called in the box when a guy dives to try to get a penalty kick. Maybe that’s the rule – if so, it should be extended to the entire field. Show a yellow or two and it ends right away.
Especially in the Cup, since yellows in two consecutive games means you ride the bench for the third. Potentially huge if it’s someone like Ronaldo.

          • MB30SD

  • AlbertInTucson

Happy trails, Casey Kasem. I DID enjoy AMERICAN TOP 40 and still enjoy that Sirius runs old repeats on Saturdays.

    • Trac

The only thing I remember about him was how proud of his hair he was. Prolly wasn’t even his.

    • Irish Sweetness

Yup, even in Ireland as a kid we got Rick Dees and Casey Kasem.

Do you have to pay for Sirius? They do old chart-shows?

      • AlbertInTucson

Bought my first brand new in over two decades last June. It caME with a 6 month free trial of sririus. Outstanding to have during football season. They wanted like, $14.99 a month to stay on after the 6 mos. trial. I ignored them but so as the deadlinE got closer, the offers got better and I pay around 10.99 a month for a year. Great during football as I said, since the D’Back baseball gamSe bumps Monday and Thuirsday off local radio in September. You can dial up the National broadcast or any teams local broadcasts. Plus there’s the NFL Radio Nework. The 70s channel runs old AMERICAN TOP 40 shows on Saturday morning. I happen to enjoy the Old Time Radio channel. Amix bag of dramas, comdies and variety shows from THE SHADOW, to LIFE OF RILEY or LUX RADIO THEATRE.

        • Cormonster

I like those old radio shows. I listen to them occasionally on Sunday nights on the local Wisconsin Public Radio channel.

But Ed Hochuli doesn’t have to worry about getting shot for his bad calls. Biggggg diff!

If those clowns are concerned about that, it sure doesn’t show.

        • Trac

I get it. Was it 2006 or 2010 when the goalie from Mexico was shot and killed in his home town for allowing a goal? Peoples is crazy when it comes to soccer.

Colombia were playing the USA in ’94. Andres Escobar allowed an own goal, and was later shot in Medellin, allegedly for causing huge sums of money to be lost. In reality, it didn’t take much to get shot in Medellin at that time.

Wait. There’s a crisis in Iraq? Holy shit. Who knew. In fifteen years I’ve gone from extremely hawkish on defense to screw them all. It really only started to change when I worked for a family that has a 26 year son that is totally ruined after getting hit by an IED. He was on a meaningless patrol in a dogshit country trying to protect people that will not protect themselves. Screw it. And there are thousands more like him. Makes me sick.

    • Trac

Someone said earlier that we need to educate them. Please, get real. We need to look at what we’re educating our own citizens with. How bout we get real and stop teaching our citizens that we can reason with these countries.

    • Cormonster

Totally senseless. My buddy’s neighbor, who I used to drink and play cards with, lost his son in Afghanistan 4 months after being deployed. I knew the kid from the time he was 10-12. He was a smart, ambitious kid. He was a cadet leader at West Point, and after graduation he finished the Special Forces Combat Diving Program, the elite Army Ranger Program, and other officer programs. His parents were so proud, they would beam with joy and show off all his awards and pictures.
Then he got sent to Afghanistan in March 08 and was killed in an ambush 4 months later. Totally devastated the family. His Dad, who was always funny and outgoing, just clammed up and he’s never been the same. Very rare to even run into him anymore.
I feel bad for all the Americans killed and wounded, but I also feel bad for the Iraqis and Afghanis who are collateral damage from the wars. It’s estimated upwards of 5 million Iraqis out of a population of about 25 million are now refugees. Who knows how many innocents have been killed or wounded.
The US should amp up it’s energy production. We could easily be energy independent within 5-10 years and not have to worry about the Middle East. Let the Europeans and Chinese worry about it. Screw these wars for the “National Interest”, which is basically protecting the interests of large multi-national corporations and their investors.
I’m starting to rant and pontificate. Will stop now.

Man vs Man. What could be more MANLY than that!? lol

It’s actually from a band I like, Ramstein (battering ram). What can be more manly than a German Rock named “Battering Ram” singing “Man vs Man”?

        • MB30SD

          uhhhhhhh….

  • MB30SD

that was a brutal match to (half) watch

jesus, the nigerians are like an old man… just can’t fucking finish it.

they’re super athletic and talented, just a total shitshow once in the box.

    Hee hee

    • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

yeah, one world-class finisher would do wonders for them.

      • MB30SD

they’re great pressing, but as soon as they even get close to the box, they just fall apart and get so so sloppy. Zero focus, zero strategy. sounds like Lovie is their coach.

      • MB30SD

espn gamecast is the next best option. it’s actually pretty interesting to watch.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

If you get Univision (Spanish channel), they’re showing all the games on there. Might not be able to understand squat, but you can watch it on ur TV AND hot girls come on in skimpy outfits.

    • Cormonster

Thanks. I’ll check out one of the sites. Not my idea of blocking and tackling, but I’ll try and watch a few games. Some of the acting is pretty funny too.

    • MB30SD

Don’t know that much about him at all, but yeah… he’s there for a reason… but he’s brand new… and while joze has been shit lately, he’s got a lot of experience and when he’s on he’s a badass.

Hopefully this kid grabs the bull and turns into a star in front of the world. Not holding my breath.

  • MB30SD

tim howard is a badass… again

    • Irish Sweetness

That’s why you need your vets. Donovan should be in the side.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

USA can’t string passes together in a row. What’s the time of possession, like 2-1 Ghana? They keep it up, it’s only a matter of time.

  • MB30SD

    yeah, brutal possession so far.

They are kicking our ass… literally

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

      passes. BRUTAL. No accuracy.

      • Shady

They do PRACTICE, right? I’ve seen AYSO games with more skill.

        • MB30SD

          you watch soccer?!?!

Can you play with a broken nose? Might affect breathing.

  • Trac

Is it that hard to throw the ball inbounds to your own player?

    • MB30SD

yeah, we’re a sloppy mess right now.

That and the Ghanaians are super aggressive. but that shouldn’t be a fucking surprise for us.

  • MB30SD

    johannsen. smh.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Wanted to be Messi. Settled for mess.

      • MB30SD

        hahaha

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

We’re pretty awful. Can’t pass. Bad set pieces. Seive-like defense (except for Howard).
Luckily, Ghana can’t take advantage – yet.

  • Shady

Can somebody please explain stoppage time? I mean, why not just stop the clock in the 1st place? We really need some arbitrary amount of time decided by the refs added on at the end of the game? Seriously, why is the clock running as they’re putting Altidore in some ghetto ass orange bucket stretcher?

    • MB30SD

my buddy said the EXACT same thing yesterday. It’s the game. It’s like someone in power trying to change the rules that have been in place for years and years… to make things ‘better’ for everyone, but really just works to make more money.

I mean, what sport does that ever happ…. oh, wait.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

      Of course.
France down a goal = 10 extra min
      Croatia down a goal = 50 seconds

  • SC Dave

Bicycle kick to Dempsey’s face, no call. Gotta love FIFA

    • MB30SD

yeah, that was a high kick without question.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Haven’t seen a high kick like that since the Karate Kid.

    • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

not to mention the Ghana player who jumped on Jermaine Jones while he was laying on the ground.

  • Shady

This ‘beautiful game’ has had a pretty ugly 1st half. Hoping for some decent foot-eye coordination in the 2nd.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Haven’t seen hand-eye cord this horrendous since Elaine…

      http://youtu.be/5xi4O1yi6b0

    • MB30SD

when the US plays, it’s never the beautiful game.

spain, italy, france of old, brazil a lot, argentina at times…

      • Shady

To prepare for these events, the USMNT needs to have their hands tied behind their backs. 3 years of nothing but using their legs and feet to function. Mr. Myagi shit. By the time the next cup rolls around they’ll be good to go.

    New rule.

Anyone with sleeve tats who flops or whines like a bitch should get caned.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Howard should just keep the ball and walk off the field.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

lol Howard is keeping that ball as long as possible cuz he knows once he kicks it off, it’s coming right back in 3…2…1…

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Ghana’s becoming more patient with setting up their shot. They’re no longer barging in like a virgin at a whorehouse.

  • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Is there a new rule I’m not aware of? Is it mandatory to pass it right to the other team every other touch?

  • Trac

I saw that Ghana goal coming from a mile.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

US has been sucking this whole game. They better be careful, or Ghana will score again.

Zee Germans got nothing on our efficiency.

But seriously, we gotta do something about those unis. The French ones you can go to a nice restaurant with. Ours looks like a little league team run by the Salvation Army.

A classic example of “I’d rather be lucky than good.” ???

    • MB30SD

weeeeell, I don’t know about that. they def aint good, but it wasn’t all luck

      • Big Mike

I domt know shot about soccer, but it looked like they Ghana was way better than the USA. Was it a rope a dope move?

        • MB30SD

no, some luck, some skill, some grit/heart

  • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

    USA USA USA USA USA

Get a draw with Portugal and you advance (assuming Germany beats Ghana)

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Assuming Germany beats Ghana? I’m not a betting man, but that’s as close to a lock as there is.
Portugal is gonna come out pissed though. They were utterly humiliated.

      • MB30SD

I think beating even a depleted Portugal side is going to be a miracle with what we fielded tonight. They are still Portugal, and I’d be willing to wager the Germans are a top 3 or 4 team this year. If they put on another show like the last game they may be top 2

        • http://www.bearsdraftontap.com Johnathan Wood

IMO the Germans are the most complete squad in the field. Beating Portugal will be a tough task, but even salvaging one point with them all but guarantees the USA advances.

    • Irish Sweetness

I didn’t see the USA getting out of that group, but things couldn’t have worked out better. Forget the draw and go all-out against Portugal – sit back holding on and they’ll carve you up.

  • Shady

Nice win for a scrappy USMNT, but they need to work on passing… And keeping the ball… The little things… The basics…

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

Not passing right to the other team is a good start.
Gotta say, U.S. defense squeezed up in the back end late like…well, we all know where this analogy is going…

  • Trac

We totally dominated the first 31 seconds of that game. Lol.

    • http://t.co/MsJnMxjrmd GoldMemberCrush(85)

You forgot the other 30 seconds of the set-piece header.

  • Trac

Never before has the U.S. actually won an ugly game in the World Cup. Is that progress?

    • Irish Sweetness

The best games to win! I’ll take the points and the ugliness every time.

  • Trac

Is Portugal our next bitch now? He he.

    • Big Mike

      Yes. Next sunday

  • Trac

John Brooks was the first American sub to score a goal in the history of the World Cup. The sky’s the limit boys.

    • AlbertInTucson

      “Oops.”

  • Irish Sweetness

Can we have a blog poll and try and get some web momentum going, Jefe?

Our QB roster of destiny :

    Jay + Kyle Orton

    or

Jay + JP + Failure + Clausen + the other guys

We roll with 2 QBs. If Jay AND Kyle go down … that would suck somewhat, but you phone one of the three stooges. Gives us two solid vets with an extra spot for some other position.

None of the backups we have is the future of the team, so we go with a pro and free up a spot.

It’s the wheel of life, Neckbeard comes back to us after having gotten us Jay.

    How cray cray is that?

    • bearsfantillend

as many people have already told you. Kyle Orton is already under contract with the Cowboys. we are not going to waste draft picks or any players to trade for him. Especially since he wants to retire. it is not happening, drop it.

lets put it in terms you might understand.
The 2nd in command of an Alien Grays combat team was an aging alien who had modest success throughout his career. He spent most of his career bouncing from one alien combat team to another sometimes winning sometimes losing, sometimes in charge and sometimes not, until he found a really cushy position that paid really well on a combat team that performed great in combat simulations but fell flat on their faces during live combat. During his time as the 2nd in command he realized that he really enjoyed not have much expected of him. He had a lot of free time to dream. He still dreams of his younger days when he spent most of his time with ditzy women and bottles of the alien equivalent to Jack Daniels, but now he also dreams of doing nothing and retirement. Unfortunately he still has one more year of service on his alien combat teams contract, and his current alien combat team wants him to fulfill his obligation. They are not just going to cut him and lose out on the money they have already paid him. They do not want him to be transferred to another team, unless they get compensation, and he is still useful as the 2nd in command on their team. and honestly no other alien combat team really wants him if he is seriously contemplating retiring. So the only way out of his alien contract is to retire, unfortunately if he does he will need to pay back a large portion of the Alien bonus money they gave him. So he is stuck with his current Alien Combat Team with no plausible options to join another Alien Combat Team.
