• 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

First to say, losing in heat breaking fashion b4 bye sucks.

  • gpldan

Lawrence Holmes should have Jeff on as a regular. But LWH is a douche.

  • gpldan

Tom Hardy (Bane) has just been cast as Elton in the Elton John biopic.

    “I am music’s redemption!”

    • TheBigCheesy

      Reckoning?

      • gpldan

Well, yeah, but that word sounded a little hostile for Sir Elton.

  • SC Dave

Jeff, you’re TOTALLY full of shit saying that Devin Hester made that TD all by himself.

It was the classic TD return for Hester. Got out of a little trouble early, and then had a line of blockers make the rest of it a walk in the park. Well, a very fast walk, but a step or two slower than it used to be.

What I *don’t* like, however, is how many times Devin has to basically stop on a return to look for space. But that has been a problem right about since HH retired*.

    * not to say that correlation is necessarily causation

    • DaBearsBlog

Go watch that return again. The blocking is set up for the opposite direction.

      • DaBearsBlog

I will literally never understand why half the guys down here seem angry at Hester. Ten years from now you’ll be telling stories about him. He’s going the most exciting Chicago Bear since Walter Payton. Yet you make it sound like he has to prove something to you weekly.

        • AlbertInTucson

Yes, Blogfather, some misguided souls have been saying “Hester’s done”, calling for his release, and bitching because he doesn’t run one back one or break a long one on a weekly basis.

          But let’s stay on point.

The flak you’re catching is for

          A) Giving Hester ALL the credit for this TD

          and

          B) Your assertion that he is still, today, the most dangerous return man in the game.

As for “Watch the video”, I have.

I submit to you and the blog that the video does NOT support your position any more than the Zapruder Film supports the Warren Commission.

          http://thebiglead.com/2013/10/20/devin-hester-returns-punt-for-td-vs-redskins-his-first-since-2011/

Hester makes a NICE juke to get free from the far sideline. and start the ball rolling. At that same time, he also gets a block 10 yards ahead at the Bear 30 from, the deservedly much maligned, Anthony Walters against Skins #45, who clearly would have had an angle to cut him off at the near sideline. Hester got TWO MORE blocks, the 2nd of which is a PANCAKE, at midfield and that 2nd guy (#82, Jordan Reed, I believe) was not a “heavy” and would had been able to pin him to the near sideline had he not been blocked (After all, he’d already been running thru the Bear secondary all afternoon) because we I think ALL admit, Devin’s lost that little extra burst that made him so special in his prime. Lastly, Blake Costanzo took out the punter to seal the deal and you KNOW DARN WELL Devin’s been caught by punters more times recently than we care to remember.

          Credit where credit is due.

The ST blocking has been poor all year, but NOT on THIS return.

          • Sactowns#1

Oh man I love those two pancake blocks on the edge there.

          • Scharfinator

I was thinking of doing a break down on this play too, but you’ve done plenty well enough.

        • MB30SD

because last year he said and I’m paraphrasing and reading between the lines for you that, ‘i’m just collecting a paycheck, I haven’t been really interested or invested in giving my all for the last two years. Fuck my teammates who put their health and safety on the line to win every time we play, fuck the coaches, the ownership who pay me, the memory of Halas and the history of the Bears org, and mostly fuck you fans who love me and pay to see me give my all on every single play.

No, fuck you devin you pussy, you quitter, you dolt.

THAT jeff is why he 100% has to prove he deserves our respect and admiration every week from now on.

        • bearsfantillend

I am a fan of Hester but i am going to call it as is see it. Not fair catching punts and letting them bounce costing atleast 10-15 yards, hesitating for what seems for ever after catching a punt to make a break. and he still has the occasional dropped punt. Accept for his tendency to muff a punt, he is not the same player as 3 yrs ago. even from that video it seems apparent that he has lost a step. He is not the most dangerous return man in the game anymore, i would probably give that title to Trindon Holliday. But in his defense the blocking on punts has been pretty terrible compared to years past.

        • CanadaBear

Jeff you know I’m Devin’s biggest fan here. Enough with the “He did it all himself” hooey. That’s not true of any returner, even Devin. I totally agree with you about people telling stories years from now.

      • to make it easy for everybody here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PylYXnVjjCQ

he breaks that first tackle. from there it looks like he’s just reading the blocks. which is nice to see. but to say that was all himself? come on now. it’s not like this one where we can definitively say that devin hester was the main reason devin hester scored a TD:

        • SC Dave

Absolutely corrrect, evan. In the version linked below, and the end zone shot tells all. The announcer describes how virtually every Washington player has a Bear on his left. so the blocking is absolutely set up to run the ball right side.

The fact you are flat-out wrong has nothing to do with anger at Hester, Jeff.

          http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap2000000265984/%7BuserLink%7D

          • Scharfinator

Watching all these makes me pine for the old SP days…

I would argue that Hester had better blocking before AND was faster/fearless/breaking arm tackles like a motherfucker.

  • AlbertInTucson

“That touchdown, that he (Hester) scored Sunday, was ALL about him.”

Maybe SC Dave put it more succinctly but, please stop saying that. It just is not true.

  • AlbertInTucson

    13:27

“Do they have to go in there an beat Green Bay? No.”

    Ugh.

It was bad enough to READ that in the last thread.

It sounds even WORSE when you SAY it.

    • gpldan

Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.

  • AlbertInTucson

Yes, Blogfather, SOME misguided souls have been saying “Hester’s done”, calling for his release and bitching because he doesn’t run one back one or break a long one on a weekly basis.

    I am not among them.

    But let’s stay on point.

The flak you’re catching this week is for

    A) Giving Hester ALL the credit for THIS Touchdown

and also I suspect, somewhat, for

    B) Your recent assertion that Devin Hester is still, today, the most dangerous return man in the game.

As for “Watch the video”, I have.

I submit to you and the blog that the video does NOT support your position any more than the Zapruder Film supports the Warren Commission.

    http://thebiglead.com/2013/10/

Hester makes a NICE juke to get free from the far sideline and get things rolling. At that same time, he also gets a block 10 yards ahead at the Bear 30 from, of all people, the deservedly much maligned, Anthony Walters against ‘Skins #45, who clearly would have had an angle to cut Hester off at the near sideline. Hester turns the corner and gets TWO MORE nice blocks around midfield, the 2nd of which is a PANCAKE and that 2nd Redskin (#82, Jordan Reed, I believe) was not a “heavy” and likely would have been able to cut off DH to the near sideline had he not been knocked on his can. After all, Reed had already been running thru the Bear secondary all afternoon and I think we ALL admit that Devin’s lost that little extra burst that made him so extra-special in his prime. Lastly, Blake Costanzo took out the punter, who also had the angle, to seal the deal and you KNOW DARN WELL Devin’s been deprived of TDs by PUNTERS (UGH!) more times recently than we care to remember.

    Also, if…

“..the blocking is set up for the opposite direction.”

…what were all those white jerseys doing on the side of the field where Hester needed them?

    Credit where credit is due.

The ST blocking HAS been poor all year, but NOT on THIS return.

    • MB30SD

btw, the dude who laid the big hit on 82… none other than rookie SAM Khaseem Greene

    • johnnywad

The entirety of the issue for me is still the fact that this is his only job. Is there another guy in the league that JUST returns? Secondly, is there another Bear on the roster that could have scored the Touchdown that Devin did Sunday? I don’t know of any other player with Devin’s job description. Secondly, I believe there are a handful of Bears including Wilson and E Bennet, that would have scored on the same play. Its a question of value. Emery appears to be looking for maximum value at every position on the field. The other piece to this is the fact that opponents do appear to be working very hard to keep the ball out of Devin’s hands with strange kick placement. That tips the scale just a little in Devin’s favor for now.

      • SC Dave

Not sure anyone mentioned that Trestman said in the presser had Josh gone out, Earl would have played QB.

        • johnnywad

Receiver, Punt Returner, QB. Now theres a guy earning his bones.

          • SC Dave

And he gets a pay cut to show for it. Go figure.

But on the other hand, he has a roster spot, and $1.5M ain’t exactly chump change.

  • AlbertInTucson

I KNOW it seems impractical but I don’t think the D could look any worse than if they scrambled things over the bye and showed up in Green Bay in a (GASP, HERESY!) 3-4 with Anderson, Bostic, Greene and McClellin as LBs.

Even if it was a complete bust, I’d respect the staff for the bold attempt.

As it stands, they’d have been better served Sunday to just blitz the daylights out of RGIII on the that last Redskin drive. If they get to him, great. If the Skins hit a big play for a TD, that’s fine too because the Bear offense gets the ball with plenty more time to respond than 45 seconds and no time outs.

Sooner or later it’s going to dawn on some coach that if you’re in a shootout, which is what the league WANTS, anyway, having the ball last is more important than trying to protect any kind of 1 possession lead with 4 or 5 minutes left.

    • Barb UMihai Mar

I’d respect them if they fired the Defensive coaching staff and let the players prepare on their own. I bet Briggs and Tillman can make a better job then these guys. There was a scene against the New Orleans where Jennings, Briggs, Tillman and Major What where talking on the side line and Briggs saw the camera and alerted the others. They where not talking about adjustments, they where talking about how incompetent the coaching is. You could not create a D with less leadership and inspiration even if you tried really, really hard. The Raider and Jaguar Ds have more fighting spirit and will than the Bear’s D. The tactic of non signing the future FA should backfire too.

      • i’ll give you this, barb, you certainly are consistent in your vitriol towards the defensive staff. i’m impressed that you’re able to read lips well enough to know what the gentlemen on the sideline were talking about.

        • Barb UMihai Mar

Let us send our sisters and cousins as a gift to our defensive staff… after all it’s pretty difficult to be in charge of one of the worst Bear Ds in history. PS: You don’t have to read lips… all you need is a basic IQ. 3 All Pro veterans, soon to be FA talking with low voices on the sideline while the TE of the other team put a clinic on the unit… same guy that the New England crew hold at 0 yards one week after. Poor fuckers…putting their best corner and double/triple teaming him all game long, while playing 2 undrafted DT rookies + other 6 rookies/second year players… pussies. PS2: And no, he hasn’t Jordan Reed.

          • 3 players talking in low voices on the sideline could be saying:

            1. “man, you see that girl in row three? i bet she can cook some fluffy motherfunkin’ pancakes!”

            2. “man, i hate the coach. it’s his fault i fractured my shoulder and melt tore his acl.”

            3. “i’m sad breaking bad is over. what should i start watching next?”

          • MB30SD

            I think it was #3

          • Shady

And the answer would be The Walking Dead… Or Boardwalk Empire.

          • Barb UMihai Mar

Maybe “This year, I missed more tackles before I fractured my shoulder, that in the last 5 years put together”.

          • johnnywad

            What?

          • CanadaBear

I thought it was just me!

          • AlbertInTucson

Basic IQ? Uh-oh. Better hope she CAN read lips.

          • bearsfantillend

wow. i would not send my sister or any of my cousins to them that would be cruel and unusual punishment. Seriously you should see my sister and cousins WOOF!!! that would not be an incentive at all.

          • Barb UMihai Mar

Send them your horse then. Sun Tzu style.

  • johnnywad

I can’t tell whether I wish for it bad enough that I’m confusing myself or I think it might actually happen, but I think the Bears might steal one in Green Bay.
Pack are without Cobb, Finley and Matthews. Bears are circling the wagons. Losing Briggs sucks but we weren’t going to slow the Pack down anyway. McCown needs to have the game of his life but it could happen. Pack shit the bed against the Bengals. If they play that game again, the Bears have a shot.

    • CanadaBear

You’re forgetting the Bungles have a good D, esp DL.

      • who couldn’t even get 1 sack on us! we’re unstoppable! 16-0, here we come!

  • Coach Urlacher says Shea McClellin should play the position he played his entire career before coming to the Bears. Looks like he’s listening to us.

    http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/403670-urlacher-suggests-bears-lineup-change

  • CanadaBear

All this Schiano stuff makes me laugh. What a tool! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. I thought he reminded me of Wanny. Turns out he was on Wanny’s staff. Butch Davis is on his staff now. There’s a “Three Amigos” of trust if ever I saw one.

    • AlbertInTucson

Have to wonder if Schiano even survives the season, no?

      • CanadaBear

I’ve read Butch Davis is next man up. If I were a fan, gulp, I’d be in favor of changing now.

        • AlbertInTucson

Oh, BTW, NICE choice of places to go play, Mr. Revis.

          • CanadaBear

That’s what happens when money is the top priority. I’m pretty sure he’d like a do-over on that one!

          • AlbertInTucson

From “Revis Island” to “Devil’s Island”…”

  • Trac

    Jeff:

    1. Cutler should be criticized for not hitting more receivers on the short to intermediate routes.

    2. Yes, a poor pass rush has exposed our Defense. I have been luke warm on our D’s capabilities for the past several years.

    3. For the Bears to give up on trades is a mistake. There has to be 1 or 2 mid level signings that at least give us a chance of plug the run.

    4. Emery will hire a college coach or a no name. I disagree with Jeff here.

    5. I don’t feel bad for Chicken Dinner. I still think Emery flubbed the dub on him.

    6. Jeff, enough already with the rose colored Hester glasses. Now you’re making stuff up to keep your storyline alive.

    7. The Bears don’t have to beat the Packers? Smh! Of course they do! Will they? Maye not. Do they have to win? Absolutely. I don’t get you. You said the Giants game was a must win game, now you say the Bears don’t have to beat the Cheese. C’mon man, what happened to you?

    • Sactowns#1

Hey what happened to the DB who came out as gay and now says he’s being blackballed by the league? I dont remember his name but I recall he made the probowl and he’s young. Couldnt be any worse than what we’ve got.

      • kerry rhodes? he’s denying it, but there’s no way he’s worse than conte/wright. even if kerry only had 1 leg, he’d be better out there than what we’ve got

        • AlbertInTucson

I do not think that saying Kerry Rhodes is a better safety than Mssrs, Wright or Conte is a stretch.

          • i don’t think saying Paul Edinger is a better safety than Wright/Conte is a stretch.

          • AlbertInTucson

Now, that MAY be a stretch….but not too much of one.

        • MB30SD

rhodes is a good safety. he’s a badass. I don’t give a rat’s ass if he likes to fuck chickens maing. My left nut is better than either of our POS safeties.

          • i mean. i hope he doesn’t make seCkz with chickens. but if he can help cover a TE in the seam or a slot guy running a post corner, i’ll look past it.

          • MB30SD

mighty liberal of you. I posted on the last thread… is that you with the fabulous hipster mustache in your pic?

          • sorry, i missed it. i like that disqus alerts you to responses, but i haven’t yet gotten to the point of checking and going back to previous threads. am still acting like we’re on CN.

yes. that is me and that is my mustache. we’ve been places together. seen things that no one else sees. he’s like the best friend i never had. i suggest you grown one.

in fact, i suggest you all grow one.

Dante Hall is a moron. No you don’t take a shot Dante. That gets you a flag, a fine, and maybe a suspension. Man I hate this bravado shit. Martellus can reserve the right to want to punch Merriweather for being a stupid asshole without actually doing it. This makes him a smarter player and person and I’m glad he’s a Bear. Guys like Merriweather need to be in some third level MMA circuit. He uses his own head to purposefully take professional athletes out. Imagine the Tao piling up in his skull. Guess he’ll get his just desserts at some point down the road.

    • AlbertInTucson

      Dante Hall?

      Really?

      Laughable irrelevance.
