“Hey Jeff, frustrating game..”. For sure, guys. Welcome to being a Bears fan, 2013 Edition.

  • AlbertInTucson

Agree. The Bears can NOT afford to be drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round of the 2014 draft with the state their defense is in.

    • BerwynBomber

I don’t know. We’ll see. You really have no need to draft any other O player this year if you did pick a QB. In other words, you could pick all D-players and one QB. I think all this comes down to how enamored Trestman is of Cutler.

  • AlbertInTucson

Good point by Gruden on RG III. ALL those quick screens to the wideouts required ZERO reads.

    Snap. Step. Throw.

Well, 7+ yards an ATTEMPT is good. But the 7+ yards per COMPLETION for Mr. Griffin tonight is kind of pathetic.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

“Can’t pay a QB $100M to play half the season” – Jeff

Well, a team CAN pay a QB $100 team to keep a team hovering around .500 like the Cowboys and Ravens.

  • MB30SD

$… I am 100% with you re: tucker. He keeps the D not even getting a little better and stopping the embarrassment, he needs to get shitcanned.

We need the guy that works magic with nothing, not the guy who can babysit greatness (I’m looking your way lovie and babiatch)

    • MB30SD

Oh and good kobe joke. hee hee

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

It is god damn embarrassing. I’m used to offenses sucking. I can handle that. But there’s some emasculating about a team not being able to stop the run, ESP the Bears who not one year ago were stellar vs the run.

Now, every time I hear an FF podcast or any sort of talk about the Bears it never fails that I hear, “The Bears run D is a joke.” And all I can do is say, “Sorry?”

Not having a good O is like getting punched in the face, but even though it might hurt more, it’s still preferable to getting slapped, which is what this D is doing to me every time they suit up.

    • Trac

Our D is just not big, quick or talented enough to match up well against anyone except the bottom feeders.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

8 QBs in the first round? Hmmm…Let’s take a look with suckiest team first

ATL, no way they replace Matty Ice, right?
    HOU check.
    JAX double check
MINNY no way they ride with Ponder/Freeman.
WAS Shannahn will be gone before RG3
TB Glennon might make them pause.
BUFF They like their rook QB, and they’ll give him a chance.
OAK unless McGloin or Pryor tear it up, yes.
    NYG nah.
CLE Not so fast my friend. Hoyer was slinging it before he went down.
JETS, if they have a fire sale, new QB a possibility. Geno never impressed me.
STL They’re committed to Bradford which baffles me.
    SD Rivers revived
MIA Tannehill looks OK. Their Oline is a much bigger issue.
PIT Well, if the rumors of Big Ben wanting out are true, then yes.
BALT Flacco not going anywhere for a loooong time.
TEN Locker is good when healthy, but he’s never healthy. Stafford part duex?
    GB Please.
CHI I agree with Jeff that Cutler will at least get franchised, which will be endlessly annoying.
PHI Foles like Glennon looks like the real deal.
DAL Romo’s corpse will get an extension.
    DET Stafford, nope.
ARIZ interesting, but Palmer has been on fire. Maybe a mid-rounder.
CIN This will be interesting. If they crash and burn in the playoffs again, then yes, QB in 1st
INDY, you’ll be a grandpa when they draft a QB in the 1st again.
    NE Brady. Next.
    CAR Cam’s finally not choking
KC Might be sneaky, but they can very well draft a QB in the 1st. Reid likes drafting his QB.
NO Brees part of the holy trinity.
SEA Last name Wilson, first name Russell.

    So, by my count.

4 QBs will be drafted for sure in the 1st (HOU, MINNY, OAK, JAX)
5 extra QBs MIGHT be drafted (NYJ, CLE TB, CIN, KC)

So 8 is possible, but I don’t think it’s likely.

My guess would be 5QBs drafted in the 1st with a rash in the middle rounds.

    • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Also, not sure we can even afford a mid-rounder for a QB. I would advocate scooping up a guy like Tyler Wilson who had “character” issues, but all the other ingredients (remember he was a 4rth rounder who fell because of said issues).

Maybe McGloin starting over him is a wake-up call, and who better to learn from than McDrago and Trest?

    • BerwynBomber

Agree with your four 1st round locks. But would be surprised if NYJ picked another QB. I’m no Geno Smith fan but basically by drafting another 1st round QB they would be signaling he is already a bust and they’re moving on. They could do it but I would be surprised.
I would also argue with your KC and Cincy additions. Cincy is probably more settled on Dalton than we are on Cutler (or at least as settled … Dalton’s younger if nothing else.) KC’s interesting. They could but I would think they’d more likely go later round QB than 1st. They just signed Alex Smith didn’t they or is his contract up?

    • Trac

I think it is hard to believe Trestman won’t try to reach for a guy in the 3rd, 4th or 5th round. The position is too important not to.

      • Ghost of Waffle

There is no reason to “reach” for a QB in rounds 3,4 or 5 when you can draft players in those rounds at positions that could actually make the team and contribute like LB, DL, OL and CB.
Reading about the insane idea of drafting a college kid to play QB for the Bears when we have Cutler and McCown and a cheap 3rd alternative in Jordan Palmer makes me want to fucking kill myself.

        • Trac

Hey, Emery himself pointed out that if there had of been a decent prospect at where our pics fell last year he would have drafted one. He views drafting a qb for grooming as an essential component of doing his job to build for the future. I think you didn’t actually read my comments in entirety. lol. McCown may have totally alleviated the need to do so but if a good prospect falls to us in the mid to lower rounds, he may very well draft one.

          • Packers kept drafting QBs when they knew old DickPick wasn’t going anywhere. Worked out pretty well.

          • MikeBrownhadaPosse

Their Defense wasn’t falling apart during those years either.

  • BerwynBomber

McCown now leads the league in the four letter’s total QBR. Pretty funny. He passed Manning after Peyton’s semi-stinker at NE Sunday night. Cutler is still at #10.
Btw, not sold on QBR being the total answer in qb ratings. Seems equally flawed as the old system. Or about 75% indicative, 25% misleading.

    • SC Dave

Not sure why it’s funny; McCown has played *very* well.
Btw, he set the franchise single-game completions record Sunday (36 of 47 for 76.5%)

      • Trac

Sounds like pretty decent play calling to me. See, this is why I take exception with posters slamming Trestman.

        • Ghost of Waffle

Trac, at some point you are going to actually have to read the words that people are writing so you can stop making shit up. People, meaning fans and paid football analysts are questioning his goal line and 4th down calls and packages not the other 90% of the plays.

          • Trac

I was actually acquiescing to Shady somewhat my man. I get it. I just try to sometimes look at the overall landscape instead of the minuter and I lock on to differences of opinions more than I should.

  • Trac

I just looked at a poll on the Bears site. 55% of respondents believe the Bears won’t make the playoffs and I happen to agree with them. I just don’t see the right combination of the lions and packers losing and the Bears winning enough games left on the schedule to change my mind. I know, we’re in first place hoping the Cheese beat the Lions on Thursday and they very well may but to me the loss against the lambs was just too big to ignore. Are the Rams that good? I can’t see it.

    • MikeBrownhadaPosse

They don’t suck. Their defensive line is for real, Austin was a weapon waiting to happen, and Clemens isn’t that terrible if you can’t pressure him. In short, that was a legitimate loss.

      • Shady

I believe it was you and Mr. Al in Tucson who ridiculed me for stating St. Louis had a decent defense during a prime time game against the 9ers earlier this season. Granted they looked awful that evening, but the Rams have talented defenders and finally found a way to cobble together an offensive line.

        • MikeBrownhadaPosse

          Me???
          I think I said their O-line was a sieve.

      • we actually had some decent pressure on him. he was just able to slide around in the pocket and find wide-the-funk-open receivers 20 yards down the field.

  • Trac

Watching Coach T’s press conference, he chalks up the loss to the following:

    1. Too many penalties.
    2. Lack of creating turnovers.
    3. Forte’s fumble early in the game.
    4. Mental errors, players not lining up in the correct positions.
    5. Poor execution.
    6. In a nutshell, lack of discipline. (yes shady, that is on the coaching staff)

  • ATL Dave

Haven’t seen much about Bostic, Seems to me he’s out of position more that he should be at this point.

    • SC Dave

Everyone loves to hate the safeties, but scroll down here to the Defense numbers and look at Tackles.
Wright (56) and Conte (45) are first and fourth, respectively, on the team. Briggs (47), despite missing the last four games is third. James Anderson is holding up with 54 at SAM.
Bostic, in 9 games, has 22 tackles. Urlacher had more against Arizona.

      • MB30SD

now, I’d like you to tell me where those tackles were made please dave.

I’m willing to bet you a LOT of money that the vast majority of wright and conte’s tackles were made at 10+ yards down the field.

that, and those numbers are only indicative of one thing… we don’t have a dline and 2 out of 3 LBs are rookies. It’s a VERY bad thing when both your safeties lead the team in tackles… especially when most of them are being made 10-30 yards down field.

        • THIS.

Unless your safety is Troy Polamalu, crashing the line on every second play, your safeties should not be leading the team in tackles. Those numbers don’t mean they’re good. They mean the front 9 are fargin terrible.

Also agree – Conte’s tackles come 40 yards away from the line of scrimmage.

        • SC Dave

          Absolutely.

Though I’m far from an expert on defense, it did not appear that Wright and Conte were taking as many horrible angles to ball carriers last year. Given that the Bears have played a gap-control defense for years and those two guys have been taught to trust that the other guys are covering theirs, is it reasonable to suppose that some percentage of what looks like stupid angles are because someone else has failed so miserably to be in the right place?

I’m not trying so much defend the safeties as to figure out how they can be so much worse than last season.

  • Shady

A former GM told me Bears D Coordinator spend to much time trying to be a head coach and not enough time preparing his defense.

No time to chat, discuss amongst yourselves.

    • MB30SD

shocking. I never would have seen that coming.

      SMMFH.

Well, let’s hope that next year he gets his chance to be HC somewhere fucking else.

      • CanadaBear

Hey MB are you still standing by your comment about PE’s most recent draft? You know, the one where you said it was so great. So far, Long looks like a great pick, Mills a good pick and that’s about it. Bostic and Greene look like just a couple of guys (or worse) and Washington and Wilson can’t get on the field. I get that Wilson can’t get in the games. Our WR’s are really good (can’t believe I just wrote that). But Washington can’t get on the field over a street pickup (Bass). Not to mention CD is pathetic. Overall the way I see it, Jeffery and Long are fantastic pics, Mills and Frey are good picks and all the rest are just warm bodies or worse. I’m not giving up on Bostic, Greene, Washington and Wilson but I’m not convinced they will ever get it. Overall I like PE’s work but his drafting hasn’t been his strong suit so far.

        • MB30SD

Canada, I have to admit that I’m a little puzzled at your view of PE’s draft. Here is how I see it:

          Draft #1 (Lovie’s team picks):
          * CD – Bust
          * Ashlon – #1 WR (he’d already be our #1 if we didn’t have one of the top 3 guys in the NFL)
          * Hardin & erod – total busts
          * Frey – decent nickle

          Draft #2 (all PE):
          * Long – Could/should be a franchise OL for years to come

          * Bostic – Canada… dude… he was playing college FB last year maings!? I don’t think he’s an urlacher HOF guy, but he can 100% be a fletcher, jesse tuggle type. He’s a rookie man, you’re already seeing nothing from him?! Don’t really get this judgement. I’ll tell you after his 3rd season.

          * Greene – Basically, same as bostic here. I really like this kid, he just needs time. Briggsy didn’t start his rookie season either. I’m not suggesting bostic or greene are lach and briggsy… those guys are both HOF quality… but give these two kids a chance man. I like what I’ve seen so far and think they were GREAT choices at our picks, given our needs.

          * Mills – Again, he’s a rookie. If he continues to get better he’ll also be a franchise OL guys for us for years to come

          * Washington/Wilson – No idea about these guys. Washington is a freak of nature, so him not being on the field given our Dline woes says something. Maybe it clicks for him, maybe it doesn’t. As for Wilson, we both know why he ain’t playing. I guess we’ll see in the next year or so if these were decent picks.

Here is my take away from PE’s draft that I LOVE… and you’ve heard this from me over and over again…

His second draft was ALL his without any bungling input from lovie and his stooges. The thing that I love about it so much is that it was the opposite of angelo’s total random and constant hit and miss dartboard bungling ‘strategy’.

PE knew EXACTLY what we needed in the order of dire need, and he doggedly stuck to the exact correct strategy of, ‘here is the list IN ORDER of our needs…. now when our pick comes up… take the best guy still on the board at the spot on the list that we need to address. Period.

that is the PERFECT strategy for where we were last year. Looking at the offense how can you not say that he did an amazing job?!?!

Now, the real test will be if he takes our D (which fell apart much more so that anyone could ever have guessed due to turrible injury luck), from where it is this season to the level that our O was upgraded last year. If he does that, I will expect a full and formal crow dinner be served to yourself on this here blog.

If he gets a bunch of chicken dinners and shits the bed next year, I will give up on my theory and will serve myself the same meal. Deal?

    • CanadaBear

Not saying it isn’t true but Gabriel could have a case of the ass against the Beloved since they shit canned him. Trust me, I’m not making excuses for Tucker. If they fire him after this season I won’t shed any tears.

Connery drives the Toyota 2000GT in You Only Live Twice, when he goes to Japan. They had to cut the rails off the seat and glue it to the floor, he still didn’t fit.

So the Toyota engineers converted the car into a convertible in one week. What’s amazing is how good a job they did, in a week they drafted and executed a retractable roof, even though it was by hand going up and down, so were most convertibles of that time.

    • gpldan

BTW, I got to drive a 66 Vette with a 4 speed. OMFG that car is so good. It’s not tri-power, but the 327 in it had lots of pull and it’s so special. I’d have happily put that up against a restored E-Type. I was very happy for the owner, and thanked him for letting me try it around the neighborhood.
