Chicago Bears at St. Louis Rams Game Thread

| November 24th, 2013

longsNo chat this week as I’m attempting to work out some kinks.

If you read my game preview closely you know I think this is a terrible match-up for the Bears defense. They have one goal today: get out of St. Louis with a victory. No style points needed. 9-6 is fine. 44-43 is fine. Just win, baby. If you have some time pregame, here’s my spot on 1490 the Jock Thursday night.

First order of business – score more points

  • Trac

    Shaky Jake’s Upset Special:
Fins over Panters – I see a big let down game here for Riviera’s gang and I think the Fins will win a squeaker here.

    Trac’s Stone Cold Locks:
Bears all over the Rams – I predict this will be the first game of the Season where the Bears will control the outcome from bell to bell.

Whiner’s over the Dead Skins. I don’t see a game on this weeks schedule that is easier to predict than this one.

The Chiefs will get back to their dream season with a win over the Bolts.

    • tobijohn

      Hmmm…

      • Trac

Boy was I wrong on the Bears prediction. They wouldn’t be able to stop grandma from reaching for her dentures today.

  • Viva

    BEAR DOWN!

  • SC Dave

By the way, the first two minutes of that audio is advertisements, etc.

  • Cormonster

Bear down! Been cranking music for almost 2 hours getting fired up.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Haha saw Pappa and Mamma Long on tv. Kyle kissed his mom on TV. There’s no kissing in football! (que Tom Hanks). Pretty cool. The Longs must be proud.

  • Cormonster

    Doc, you Bearing Down?

  • Ufficio

    BEAR DOWN

  • tobijohn

    Gonna be a long day…

  • Ufficio

    Our defense fucking sucks.

  • bearsfantillend

    oh hell.

  • Shady

    That Forte fumble is inexcusable.

    • Ufficio

Everything about this game has been inexcusable.

  • tobijohn

Bears dug themselves quite a hole…

  • Ufficio

Fuck that interference call. No way he was catching that in bounds.

    • Shady

      Conte is awful. Nothing new.

      • DaMurph

Why does Tucker keep leaving him exposed like that? He is what? Six ft 210? Keep leaving him one on one with a tight end 6 or 7 inches taller and 60 lbs heavier. It’s a recipe for disaster from the get go

      • SC Dave

Maybe, but I sure hope you’re not saying so because some mob-bought ref calls pass interference on an uncatchable ball out of bounds. For the second week in a row.

  • Hank

I want to strangle Conte so bad. Would we please release him.

    • SC Dave

You mean for getting another ridiculous mob call made against him?

  • DaMurph

    No chat this game?

    • tobijohn

      Nope, disclaimer at the top..

      • DaMurph

Didn’t pay any attention, thanks tobi

  • Shady

    Atta boy McCown.

  • Ufficio

So nice to finally have an offense. 14-0 would’ve been a death sentence in past seasons.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

The Rams specifically targeted Shea on that fake end-around. They saw that he over crashes, and they were right.

    • Shady

      …and Greene.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Rams running right at Shea. Who saw that coming?

  • Shady

    This defense is historically bad.

    • SC Dave

The LBs are the competing for the worst I’ve seen in 45+ years of being a Bears fan

  • Ufficio

2nd and 19, Are you fucking kidding me?

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

A flag on Bowman. Who saw that coming? (luckily for Bowman, it was deemed uncatchable)

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

How was that not pushing off by Cook?

    • SC Dave

      mob money

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Maybe bring back Lach to play on 3rd and long and goaline, and that’s it.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

This is the 2nd team we’re playing off a bye. The Lions were the other team.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Brittin motioning. That Trest is a wacky fellow.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

If Bears pull it off, it will be on the pure will of Forte.

    • SC Dave

Yeah, Matt was in a Paytonesque fury for a while.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

That’s a throw Cutler would not make on 3rd and 13. Cutler would have definitely tried for the first and not a checkdown, for better or worse.

    • Ufficio

My thoughts exactly. We can’t afford that kind of shit.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

    Holy shit. A defensive stop..

  • tobijohn

    McCown is pretty nimble…

  • Ufficio

    Fuck these stupid-ass officials.

  • Shady

Fiametta absolutely destroyed this drive with that horrible holding penalty on the AJEA.

    • Ghost of Waffle

      that was not holding

      • Shady

Yes. Yes it was, and it was totally unnecessary.

    • SC Dave

YOu could call it holding, but the play was already eight yards or more downfield

  • EnderWiggin

This second quarter is a total fuck-fest. wtf is going on?

  • Ufficio

Two words for the defense: takeaway

  • johnnywad

This offense is a joy to watch. It is more enjoyable than the defense is painful. I think…..

  • Trac

TB is beating the pussy cats. This is good news.

  • Ufficio

Did I mention that our defense fucking sucks?

    • Ghost of Waffle

yeah, but you can’t be mad at the D line and LB’s. Unprecedented Defensive injuries. Now Conte and Wright on the other hand are fucking inexcusable. Conte could not have played worse.

  • Ghost of Waffle

my hatred for Conte and Wright knows no limits. The refs tried their best to fuck this up. our defense is putrid

  • Ghost of Waffle

SHEA MCCLELLIN FUCKING SUCKS. 5/5 on missed contain.

  • Ghost of Waffle

List of things making me vomit in my mouth today:
    1. McClellin playing defensive end like a freshman B team reject. Hold contain you fucking cunt.
    2. Wright/Conte not knowing what a fucking angle is
    3. The refs trying to fuck us up at every turn
    4. Forte fumbling and putting us 14 behind when 7 is almost insurmountable
    Things I like:
    1. The offense

    • Ufficio

Don’t forget having to burn two timeouts because the fucking headset doesn’t work.

      • bearsfantillend

        when is a 7 point or even a 14 point lead insurmountable…..

        • Ghost of Waffle

when the other team scores on 80% of their drives because of our depleted D.

          • bearsfantillend

            still another half to play…

          • Ghost of Waffle

scoring on this first drive of second half is the indication of whether this will be possible. I think we can score.

  • Ghost of Waffle

lol, a little touch Josh please.

    • Ufficio

Why the fuck aren’t we just running the ball there?

      • Ghost of Waffle

        i know. it’s inexcusable.

  • Ufficio

Why are the reviewing a call that’s obviously correct?

  • Shady

Can this game be over yet? How is it only halftime? I don’t know if I can take another half of this garbage.

    • Ufficio

I feel like this game is going to be longer than last week’s

  • Hank

You guys remember back when our defense was good? Those were good times. Nice to have a non-dysfunctional offense for a change though.

    • Ghost of Waffle

      unprecedented injuries to the D.
Sedrick Ellis retires on the day of camp (rotation player)
Turk McBride rips his achilles (rotation player)
      Melton acl (starter)
      collins acl (rotation player)
Ozougwu hamstring early in season (lol, better than mcclellin)
      Tilman done (starter)
      Briggs out (starter)
      Williams done (starter)
and the worst luck from guys on the street that could have come in on day one and started.
Toeina still hurt from a year ago
Okoye still hurt from a year ago

      • Hank

Just a shame Conte is not on that list.

        • Ghost of Waffle

I wish we could cut Conte mid season.

      • bearsFanatic

Not to mention Hayden at nickel (mostly starter given it’s a passing league)
Paea also has missed a lot of time (starter)

  • Ghost of Waffle

    lets win this shit show.

    • bearsfantillend

but we cant because we are down 10 pts. and like you said 7 pts is almost insurmountable. LMFAO

  • Ghost of Waffle

c’mon boys, let’s get these points.

  • Ghost of Waffle

    Dave, our guy!

    • SC Dave

WIsh they’d try Earl downfield now and then

  • Ghost of Waffle

The Pearl! gladly risking CTE, spleen and kidney damage to go over the middle. Pay that man.

    • Shady

#22 on STL looks dead. That’s why you tackle with your head up boys and girls.

  • Ghost of Waffle

    DaBearsBlog@dabearsblog

Chris Long running onto field to stop his little brother from losing it is one of my favorite moments in NFL history. As real as it gets.

    ——————————-
The fact that the refs didn’t flag it is representative of the job they are doing today. Also, that they didn’t blow the whistle on a forward pass that resulted in that whole sequence.

    • Shady

Kyle should have been booted for attempting to Suh that Rams player laying on the ground.

    • bearsFanatic

Too bad in his post-game comments he acted like he was just keeping his teammate safe and said Kyle was just the first body he saw. Would’ve been much cooler to admit he was trying to help his brother (and in doing so also keeping his teammate from getting kicked in the teeth).

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

    McDrago’s pocket presence is impressive.

    • Shady

As is Trestman’s playcalling. Misdirection screen to Fiametta? Nice.

    • SC Dave

During the game I was thinking that. Were you watching, Jay?

  • Ghost of Waffle

Josh has a lot of completions and has played well but if he could just hit someone in stride we’d be golden
    Fiammetta!!! you bastard!!

    • SC Dave

You mean like that one to Uni? Or the TD to Marshall two plays later?

      • Ghost of Waffle

I don’t know, he was consistent and the chains were moved. I just felt like alot of throws were short or not leading the WR. It probably doesn’t even make a difference. The throw to Bush was short and he’s moving away and that was a TD if thrown better. Bush is a pro though and I was livid and was screaming at the TV because you have got to make that catch if it hits you in the hands. he’s got to make that play but Josh has to get that ball out there. Trestman then stuck his dick into it but it just felt like we left some plays out on the field against a shitty DB corps for St. Louis. It was pretty much on the D today but the phantom holding call on the punt and the terrible Red Zone performance left points on the field and then ate up a ton of time on our 1/9 goal line adventure.
I went through the game and i thought he played well.

        • SC Dave

The hold on Hester’s score was the most brutal of several horrible calls that went against the Bears. To me, it was very telling they could not find a replay. Or would not show one.

  • Ghost of Waffle

    oh jesus Bush

    • Ghost of Waffle

      and josh

  • Trac

Lets see if we can finally push it in from the goal line

  • Ghost of Waffle

    go to marshall

  • Shady

    KICK IT – C’MON TRESTMAN!

you gotta be fucking kidding me

  • Trac

I hope we go for it

  • Ghost of Waffle

go to marshall you fucking idiot. go to marshall you fucking idiot. go to marshall for gods fucking sake. spread the fucking field.

    • EnderWiggin

Give Mike Tice a break. that was a good call.

    • Shady

Where does Michael Bush rank on your list of “go to” players?

      • Ghost of Waffle

Trestman cost us this game. We all knew the D couldn’t stop shit. To not kick a field goal or go to your main weapons is inexcusable. it cost us earlier this season and it cost us today.
How many times is Trestman going to fuck us?

        • SC Dave

Cannot agree. The costliest thing in the game today was the phantom hold (well, I assume so since the mob would not allow any replays) on Steltz that stole Hester’s TD. That play stands and the Bears would have won by 2-3 TDs.

          • Ghost of Waffle

The hold on Steltz was tragic. I cannot agree with that call. It was very interesting that there was no replay that i saw except one where the only thing you saw was the very corner of the screen Steltz was on top of the guy because the guy fell down.

  • EnderWiggin

I swear Mike Tice called that 4th and goal play.

  • Shady

HOW DO YOU NOT KICK IT?!?!?!?!

  • Ufficio

Catch the ball on 1st down, Bush

    • Ghost of Waffle

why do they use that fucking jumbo package chock full of guys that represent no fucking threat at all?

  • Ghost of Waffle

that fucking jumbo package makes me fucking sick

    • Hank

If you cant get 1 yard in the NFL you just dont deserve to win. Its been years since I felt the Bears can get one yard.

      • Ghost of Waffle

        hank, really?
Bush, Rosario, Fiammetta and Eben Britton on a run that never works instead of Forte, Marsahll, Bennett and Jeffrey. Spare me.

        • Hank

I think we’re in agreement. I don’t see how anyone thinks that squad can get 1 yard. I’m pointing out that you need such a squad or you cant win in this league.

          • Ghost of Waffle

we have 2 WR’s and a TE that can’t be stopped. Trestman refuses to use them intelligently and it cost us greatly this season. 2 victories at least.

  • Shady

MAYBE YOU WANT TO COVER JARED COOK. NO? OK! fuck

  • Maddbearfan

Nice going Trestman…another Lovie fuckup. Take the fucking 3 and keep it close. You just gave the momentem to St.Louis.

    • Ghost of Waffle

      fucking inexcusable coaching error

    • SC Dave

I die not like that call much myself, and rather vociferously called for Robbie at the time.

  • Ghost of Waffle

that was a game changing call Trestman. Thanks.
You either fucking kick it or put threats on the field and go to them.

  • Ghost of Waffle

tragic fucking turn of events. fucking tragic. that jumbo package serves no motherfucking purpose.

  • Ghost of Waffle

bears lose because of that coaching error. sorry, it’s the truth.

  • Maddbearfan

    That’s it…fuking Trestman wasted this game……

    • Ghost of Waffle

      yup, that was it

  • Ghost of Waffle

they shift, they know we’ll overcompensate then they cut back. Mel, every team does it to us now, please take note.
    sincerely
    not an NFL coach.

  • Ghost of Waffle

Dear Mark, Martellus Bennett is 6’6, Marshall is 6’5 and Jeffrey is 6’3. Please consider using them on the goal line instead of Bush, Fiammetta, Dante Rosario and Eben Britton.
    Sincerely,
Thanks for fucking this one up

    • Ufficio

This. Almost have to go for it from the 1, but it’s amazing how Trestman fucks up the play-call after being brilliant all drive.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

Our D is allowing every 3rd down conversion. That and Trest’s refusal to kick FGs might be why we lose.

    • Ghost of Waffle

you either kick or you go to your beasts. that jumbo package run never works.

  • Shady

Special teams sucking balls yet again.

  • Ghost of Waffle

    Dear Special Teams,
Don’t return kickoffs because it’s not fair to start at the 9 every time you try.

  • Hank

We needed to trade Hester while he still had a glimmer of value.

    • SC Dave

I guess you’re right, since the refs won’t allow him to score

  • EnderWiggin

    12 men in huddle…

  • Ufficio

    Catch the damn ball…

  • Shady

    pick. up. the. ball.

  • Ghost of Waffle

how long does the ball have to be on the ground before we jump on it?

    • bearsFanatic

I do miss that about Lovie. That rock was your lunch money, and you better grab it or you don’t eat.

  • Hank

Bostic on that last fumble – “Hey look, there is a ball on the ground. Odd, I wonder how that got there….”

  • Shady

Penalties are KILLING the Bears. STELTZ! DECAMILLIS! TRESTMAN!

    • Ufficio

      Penalties and drops.

  • EnderWiggin

Steltz Bomber does it again… Or was that a phantom call too?

    • Shady

      It was BS.

      • EnderWiggin

        Cheap ass call…

  • Maddbearfan

    Unfucking believable…..just un fucking believable!!!!

  • Shady

Of course the refs pick up the flag on a Forte horsecollar.

    • SC Dave

      Story of the game

  • johnnywad

Can’t recover from a Forte injury. Bush blows

    • Ufficio

      True Fact.

  • Hank

1st and 1. Lets see our 1 yard play.

    • Ufficio

      There it is!

      • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

It’s going to go something like this.

        PA throw to Fiamatta incomplete.
Back shoulder throw to Bennett incomplete.
HB draw by Bush stuffed for no gain.

    • Hank

I’ve got a good idea. Lets drop back, take 3 seconds to develop a run play. That’ll fool
      ’em. FUCKING STUPID!

  • Ufficio

Useless cunt refs finally got something right.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

    Put in FORD.

  • Hank

Timeout, Bears, need to tie a lineman’s shoes.

  • Shady

Blow ANOTHER timeout? Please explain to me what happens on the 1 yd line that the Bears can’t do anything right?

    • EnderWiggin

They spent most of the week working on RedZone and pre-snap drills…

      • Shady

Glad to know it’s working out SMH.

    • Hank

Surely 3 QB sneaks would get it in, no?

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

    PUT IN FORD.

  • johnnywad

    Fuck Michael Bush

  • Trac

Trestman needs to seriously work on his short game.

    • johnnywad

He could start by leaving Michael Bush at the airport tonight when they fly back. His ability to chain short yardage is gone. Time to retire. Forte is way better on a bad knee.

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

We’re better off at the 15 instead of the 1

  • Ufficio

Next time we’re on the 1, let’s just intentionally take a holding penalty

  • DaMurph

    Horrible officiating!

  • Maddbearfan

Another score stopping penalty. Has to go for it now. No Choice

  • Hank

Stat of the game – conversions from 1 yard line – 0/7

  • 4ever85 (AKA Butch Deadlift)

We can’t get 1 yd in 8 tries. Nice.

    • Shady

1/9 ain’t bad… Finally bailed out by the zebras.

      • Ghost of Waffle

when we initially got into the redzone i texted my buddy who was defending that 2 pt conversion call earlier in the season to bet how many tries it would take. I said 7, he said 2. it took fucking 9
        This game is on Trestman

      • SC Dave

Fuck that. We were hosed time and again by the refs. It was appalling seeing the corruption of the NFL so obviously exposed.

  • NewBearInTown

The NFL has to make a rule that if the defense commits more than 50 yards worth of penalties at the 1 yard line, then the offense gets a touchdown for free. This is ridiculous.

    • Hank

Yes, the “Give the Bears a break” rule. Pathetic. If we’re going to try and fail so much, how about at least try a quick play action pass?

  • Ufficio

TD, awesome. We only wasted like ten minutes trying to score it.

  • Trac

Last time coach T passed up on 3 we lost. I sure hope we get the ball back after a stop.

  • bearsfantillend

Stafford just threw int –Kitties gonna lose.

  • Shady

Stafford came up huge with an INT to end the game in FG territory.

    • Ufficio

4th INT of the game. Dude would be pumping gas if he didn’t have Megatron.

  • DneedsWork

and the packers are coming back….

  • Ghost of Waffle

This game is on Trestman. He’s lost me.

  • Shady

Defense, you’ve got a backup QB and a 3rd string RB. This is fucking ridiculous. STOP SOMEBODY.

  • Ghost of Waffle

    🙁

  • Ghost of Waffle

this game has officially been pissed away.

  • johnnywad

Why would any team ever throw a pass against the Bears the rest of this season?

    • Ufficio

Because our pass defense completely sucks?

    • Hank

Uh, yeah, like Ufficio said. I suppose the only thing you wouldn’t do against our defense is punt.

  • Ghost of Waffle

Trestman must be held accountable for this game.

    • bearsfantillend

how do you want him to be held accountable? do they fire him? sit him in the corner? public flogging? I got it put him in a room with you for a couple hours and let him listen to you rant about his play calling, how awful the injury riddled D is, or listen to a diatribe from you on why Cutler should be playing with a torn groin and a bad ankle.

      • Ghost of Waffle

meaning he can’t get a pass for being a first time NFL coach. The guy calls great plays all over the field and then turns into a mediocre, stubborn playcaller near the goal line and it cost us dearly again as it did earlier this year.
The playcalling deep in the red zone is bad as you can agree, the sub packages make no sense, the D is fucking depleted.
With that being said when you have a chance to put points on the board you kick the fucking field goal or at the very least you don’t give the ball to Bush with Rosario, Fiammetta and Britton on the field instead of Forte, Marshall, Bennett and Jeffrey. When you have 9 motherfucking chances and you’re doing the same bullshit elephant package or whatever they call it and you finally eek it in on the NINTH FUCKING TRY? Yeah, you have to be accountable. You can agree with that.
I’ve chosen to ignore the last comment which was simply a troll move on your part.

        • bearsfantillend

yep you got me on the last comment, just poking the bear a little. LOL.

The fact is he is a 1st time head coach, and he has brought this offense into the 21st century and it is joy to watch most times. Coaches are stubborn people we all should know this from the 8 yrs of Lovie. “Rex is our QB” “We get off the bus running” .. The one difference is that when Trestman has been questioned on his actions so far(i did not see the post game yet) he has explanations. Like last week when everyone thought he should be calling timeouts at the end he gave an in depth explanation. whether you agree with his explanations is up to you but he usually has a great deal of logic behind them. I agree his play calling within the 5yrd line has been highly questionable, but a team should be able to power the ball in from the 1 yd line.

He is the head coach of the team so everything that happens on the field he should be held accountable for, but to say his play calling in the red zone is the reason we lost, i have to disagree. The porous run D giving up 250+ yards is much more of the problem.

  • Shady

Peppers with ONE tackle. Wootton with two. NOT. GOOD. ENOUGH.

    • BerwynBomber

Yep. Peppers disappeared after his throwback/monster game last week.

  • underway

over 250 yards rushing…. I’m officially ashamed of the D

  • Maddbearfan

Leaving points s on the field , defense sucks..penalties..and a turnover. Can’t win games that way.

  • Shady

Doug and OB should have a field day with this performance today.

  • Trac

Jeff Fischer is one of those coaches that won’t allow teams to pull the wool over his eyes. He stuck with a solid game plan and it worked. Trestman also probably realized field goal weren’t gonna cut it. You can’t make a road kill D competitive.

  • johnnywad

Tucker has to be fired. I know the injuries matter. But they can’t matter to this degree. Any reasonable person would expect a drop off. Not this.

    • Ghost of Waffle

we have backups of backups of backups playing.

      • BerwynBomber

Agreed. I need to give Tucker another year given the MASH unit he was handed. Though I also think it may be time to suck it up and prepare ourselves for a three-year rebuilding process with the D.

      • johnnywad

I know and I keep trying to allow for that. But that was Kellen Clemens and an undrafted rookie that ripped the Bears up. Its not like the Rams have a stable full of weapons they threw at us. Just a bunch of hot garbage.

  • johnnywad

Anybody else ready for another Gould on sides kick?

    • EnderWiggin

      0-11

  • Shady

    Adios muchachos.

    • Hank

      Bushrod can suck my rod.

  • Maddbearfan

Nothting to see here….just move along!

  • Scala

Our Offense don’t deserve this miserable D…Season’s over.

    • Trac

Yup, by my calculations, we’ll be drafting around 20th again at 8-8. I don’t even see 9-7 in the cards.

      • SC Dave

BEars dont even have the decent to finish 3-13 when they suck

  • BerwynBomber

Well, both the Kittens and the Cheese suck. So there is that. Rodgers, along with P. Manning a few years ago, is making the ultimate case for MVP in absentia.

  • bearsfantillend

Anyone else worried that AP is going to put up 500+ yards next week against us?

  • MB30SD

Alright, juuuuust got the kids down for their nap.

So, how’d we do! We won right? Right?!?!

Oh. 42 points. really? Did P. Manning play for them this week? No? Still that guy who’s name I don’t know and will forget after this season?

Oh. Well… how’d the D do? They stopped the run right? How’d my boy conte do? Anyone?

    sigh…. fuck me.

    • Shady

You’re much better off not watching these games live.

  • MB30SD

the packers and vikings tied… fucking TIED?!?!!?!??!?!?!?!

  • MB30SD

anyone else thing that jeff removing that chat was a jinks?

  • SC Dave

God fucking damnit its hard to be a bears fan

    • AlbertInTucson

Look around. It is the same story with most of the teams in this league.

  • MB30SD

I’d like to send Mr. Tucker a card for way I have disparaged his efforts, skills, and coaching chops this year…

Trestmen’s too polite to say it but it’s obvious he feels he HAS to go for 6 when he gets that close, even in the first half of games.

The Bears cannot lose the turnover battle and win.
That defense HAS to generate turnovers.
They were 0 for 2 on those today.

From the “I’m Jeff Fisher and I am NOTstupid” Department:
The Rams studiously avoided Tim Jennings most of the day.

That “Horse-Collar” flag they picked up against Forte was the SAME call they MADE against Bowman last week. I thought it was a foul LAST week and I thought it was sure-as-hell a foul THIS week. On the other hand, that was a clean hit on McCown and should have just been a sack although it was NOT a fumble.

Is Chris Long coming onto the field to join a melee, even as a peacemaker, not a penalty?

    Better team won today.

  • Trac

Ok, we are 6-5 and still in 1st place but I’m gonna tell you guys what I saw when looking at the remaining schedule a week or two ago but didn’t want to elaborate on for obvious reasons. Philly, Green Bay, and Dallas are probably losses and we’ll be lucky to beat Cleveland and Minny with this D.

We gave up 258 yds on the ground today at an average of 8.9 yds a crack. OH MY!

With an average D, we win this game in a laugher.

    • BerwynBomber

Dallas at Soldier? Really? Ye of little faith. Oh, and Cleveland’s horrible.
Btw, the NFC North is now looking a little NFC East-ish. Seems certain the two wildcards will emerge from the South and West. Weird that there is chance SF doesn’t make the playoffs.

      • Trac

Yeah but Jeff is right, any kind of playoff run will be costmetic. We just don’t have enough depth on our Defense to give us a fighting chance.

        • BerwynBomber

Understood and I get the reason for pessimism. But the flip side is that none of the teams remaining on our schedule is all that and a bag of chips. In fact, given the home/away breakdown, I would say Philly might constitute our toughest game and they’re not much more than a .500 team, if that ultimately.

          • Cormonster

Philly is like 1-4 at home this year.

    • SC Dave

Granted the run D sux, but the Austin 65 yard play skewed the average a bit. That was clearly a call they saw on film, and between Jennings, Conte, and whoever the fuck was supposed to be playing outside LB on that play, it was a disaster.

      • bearsfantillend

yep even with that skewed 65 yards. We gave up 193 at 6.9 yards per carry still fucking awful.

      • BerwynBomber

Gotta admit that counter-reverse (or whatever they call it) by the Rams with Austin was slicker than snot on a doorknob.

  • Trac

How ironic, our D is now worse than our offense ever was. What a shame that McCown got no help from our D whatsoever.

    • BerwynBomber

Cutler is still our starter and we should hand him the keys as soon as he is back. BUT … McCown has outplayed him this year. That was his “worst” game since he has seen time and he still didn’t look bad. The O passing game looks crisp under him and just as importantly no INTs. Funny, if he was 28 rather than 34 some team would throw a pile of money at him next year.
But yes, today was all about the D. Or lack thereof.

      • SC Dave

Josh set the franchise single-game record for completions yesterday.

  • SC Dave

The only bright side is were the Bears *anywhere near* as good as the pulled pork bbq I made today, we’d already have our tix for NYC 02 February 2014.

    • Trac

      You bastard, no fair.

      • SC Dave

I suppose not, but between that, a couple extra IPAs, and Dvorak’s Symphony #9 in E minor, “From the New World”, the pain is subsiding a bit.

  • Trac

The company you keep? Only the Jags, Redskins and minnysote-ta have allowed more points than us.

  • SC Dave

I know you hate him, MB, and I must confess it’s been almost impossibly difficult holding out hope that Chris Conte might revert to the form I saw most of last year. But despite all that, can you recall any time you’ve see two worse calls in the end zone in consecutive weeks as those called against him v. Ravens and Rams?

I won’t try to defend his overall play, but shit, when you’re on a dude, managed to maneuver him out of bounds, and thereafter get called for p.i., what can you do?

It’s almost as bad as the (third?) Rams TD today when the receiver *literally* pushes the defender away from him with *both* hands, and then catches the ball. How on fucking earth do you defend against that?

Shit, you played DB. What the fuck could you do?

    • MB30SD

I have to be honest about 2 thingd dave:

      1. I didn’t see a single snap of the game today

      2. I never had to defend a pass in the end zone like that… I was mostly used at SS on run downs because I brought the wood. I wasn’t very good at straight up 1:1 pass defense.

      3. No matter what he does, I know for a fact conte shouldn’t be our starting FS… or anyone’s in the NFL for that matter. He’s just not good.

      4. Nothing, you have to rely on the refs to call those.

      • SC Dave

        1. On Thursday, that is another thing to cite of why you’re thankful.
        2. Okay, cool.
        3. I know your opinion on that. I’d rather have a better safety too.
        4. Don’t rather the replay, it will piss you off.

By the way, which two were you being honest about? 🙂

        • MB30SD

Hahaha… started with two, then kept going. I’m getting old.

  • CanadaBear

I was at work today and had to follow the game on the net. Good god we suck balls on run D. 260 yds, YIKES! I’m totally shocked Trest has so much trouble calling plays when we’re less than 5 yds to pay dirt. For fuck’s sake, put in 4 WR’s, spread them out and let Forte find a crease. If all 4 WR’s are single covered throw to them. It just can’t be that hard to figure out.

    • Ghost of Waffle

I agree. He’s over thinking it and his sub package with Bush, Fiammetta, Britton and Rosario is fucking dogshit. Put your WR, TE and RB beasts on the field, spread them out, motion them to create a one on one and if the D is too worried about the pass then get it to Forte and let him find a hole with everyone throwing blocks.
You can even motion all WR’s over to one side then split Forte out one on one with a LB. It’s not brain surgery. The current plays are dogshit in the goal line situation. All of the other plays on the field are just fine by me.

      • SC Dave

One cannot argue with results, and our red zone results suck.

    • Cormonster

Before Cutler got hurt, Bears had a top five red zone offense. They were scoring TD’s on 70-80% of red zone possessions.

I’m hoping Cutler is back next week. We need to score more points than we are against EVERY team because the defense is so bad.

      • Ghost of Waffle

I thought the McCown to Marshall red zone TD was a great example of not over thinking it. Marshall was one on one and he beat his guy. The route didn’t require McCown to be a hall of famer.

    • AlbertInTucson

Served my time with a Sunday shift once upon a time, too, Canada.
Come to think of it, that was a 6-hour-a-day Mondays thru Fridays PLUS a 10 spot on Sundays shift.

A long time ago, but in THIS galaxy.

  • Cormonster

13 teams in the NFL have 5 or 6 wins. If the playoffs started tomorrow, a 5-6 team would get a wildcard slot in the AFC. The tiebreaker would involve 6 teams.

    • NewBearInTown

Yeah, the top 5 in the AFC look pretty tough. Then that 6 spot is just waiting for someone to get good and take it.

  • AlbertInTucson

“Rarely does a kicker lose a game. Lindell has lost this game for Tampa.” Well, he certainly TRIED TO, Blogfather. And INDOORS, to boot.

    Fortunately, Megatron had other ideas.

Call it a drop or call it a fumble but even the so-called best drop them.
Marshall had a bad one today too.

  • AlbertInTucson

It WAS nice to see a significant contribution again from Earl Bennett who had kind of disappeared for a bit.

    • NewBearInTown

Agreed. He produces when given reps. But I’m afraid we’ll move on from him in a year or two. Another savy coach will get a lot more production from him that he just can’t put up with Marshall and Jeffery on the field.
Off the top of my head, the Patriots, Chiefs, Niners and Texans could all use a sure-handed guy on the lineup.

  • AlbertInTucson

If today was a “…terrible matchup…” for the Bear defense, which it was, how do we describe AP, in his dome, next week?

    A) Terrifying

    B) Really Terrfying

    C) Incredibly Terrifying

    D) Unbelieveably Terryfying

    E) All of the above

    • NewBearInTown

The Vikings played us really tough the first time around. If we had to win one game, I would have picked us beating the Rams over the Vikings. But if we’re going to win the division, we need to beat the other teams in the division. That means winning twice against the bottom feeder Vikings.
Then again, if we lose, maybe the Vikings fall out of the Teddy Bridgewater sweepstakes…

    • BerwynBomber

Just remember Christian Ponder is involved.

  • AlbertInTucson

Wow. Seems like a pretty cold night in Foxboro for Denver to still be able to suffer such a meltdown.

  • MB30SD
  • NewBearInTown

Brady and Manning on Sunday night football going to overtime. Each one got one half to absolutely dominate. Goodell must be having a seizure.
But Peyton Manning’s stat line looks horrible. Knowshon Moreno having the game of his career tonight.

  • MB30SD

just watched the lowlights. Jesus fucking christ. seriously?!?!?! Fucking garbage.

I wasn’t even angry today, now I’m fucking angry. What was that trash!? fucken a.

    • Trac

Jesus had nothing to do with it MB. Pure and unvarnished suckyness, plain and simple. The Rams put up 21 first quarter pts which hadn’t happened since 2008. Oh Brother!

  • Trac

Jeff, what are you “trying” to say? Green Bay is by far the biggest threat in our division, still. Mark my words, when we play them again, IF we are still in this thing, the only team standing in our way will be Green Bay. Based on the Bears horrible performance yesterday, it’s probably not even worth arguing about.

    • bearsFanatic

Agreed. The Lions always implode (see home loss to TB). GB can still win it just by hanging around. The tie today could come back to hurt us if they get Rodgers back any time soon. They’re only a half game back and beat the Lions already. At least we got a win against them under our belts.

  • bearsFanatic

Sorry for the length, but I have to get down these thoughts at this point in the season:

    1. The good news is, the North is still wide open, amazingly. The Lions never seize the moment, and GB is the 2011 Colts without Peyton. However, none of that will matter if the Bears do what they did today.

    2. The only thing that gives me hope for our lack of D is that
Briggs is supposed to return at some point, and we should also get
Ratliff on the D-line. If Paea can quit stubbing his toe, our D-line
could improve greatly over the next couple of weeks, and Briggs should
solidify the run D a bit. Plus, should we make the playoffs, Peanut
could come back. We still have Conte, though. I live in Indy and remember vividly the 06 Colts team that consistently relied on the end zone to stop opposing running backs. The Jaguars put up well over 300 rushing yards in one game against them. You might remember that team. They got Bob Sanders back for the playoffs and moved Rob Morris to outside linebacker instead of middle and shut everyone down in the playoffs. The D went from absolutely miserable to awesome, and no one saw it coming. Not saying our Bears D can do that, but I had no faith whatsoever in the Colts defense that year, and they won the Super Bowl behind a great defense. They obviously had Peyton, but their defense won them the Super Bowl. Peyton won them a lot of games.

    3. The penalties are absolutely maddening. Yes, some were phantom calls, but
when you suck, you tend to get penalized more because you don’t get any
benefit of the doubt. The biggest question is why are we trying to
become the Lions? Kyle Long cannot go all Albert Haynesworth. He’s our best lineman, so somebody needs to tell him you can only attempt to break the jaws of teammates, not opponents, and it has to happen at shooting ranges midweek, not during the games.

    4. Light years ahead of where they were doesn’t make the offensive line great. It’s still a work in progress. They still rarely get push up the middle. Teams know if they keep our backs inside, they can stuff us. On the goal line, or on stupid 4th down plays, this becomes a serious issue. They are allowing a lot fewer sacks this year because the players are better, but a lot of it is also Trestman’s emphasis on getting the ball out quickly. It also doesn’t help when Bush stops himself at the goal line. Seriously, you stop running and wait to get hit?

    5. I love what Trestman has done for our offense. It’s awesome to watch us rack up first downs on throws to wide-open players who can run after the catch. The play to Marshall with our 3 studs on one side of the line was just awesome. Do that more. However, some of his in-game decisions are baffling. The 4th down call on the first drive in the second half was one of the worst coaching moves I’ve ever witnessed, though. I’m still stunned. And then to march out the same personnel group that always gets stuffed is just plain stupid. We put up 7 to narrow it to 3 there, and the pressure’s on them. Even putting up 3 would’ve made it a one-score game and kept some semblance of momentum. Instead, they’re free to call whatever they want with a 10-point lead. Yes, he has no faith in the D, but 3 points is better than 0. I’m starting to think he is as stubborn on offense as Lovie was on defense, and that’s not a good sign.

I’m trying to find optimism, but it’s tough today. At least we’re still tied for first because no one wants to win this division and get pummeled in the playoffs.
